Last May, ASCD selected
Finegayan Elementary
School as one of 10 schools
nation wide to become part of
its new Whole Child Network
of Schools. FES applied to be
in the network and committed
to a three-year plan to improve their environment under the Whole Child Tenets,
which state that students must
be healthy, safe, engaged,
supported, and challenged to
succeed in school. ASCD is
providing grants, resources,
and supports to help ensure
that FES successfully follows
the tenets and improve learning and teaching across the
board while promoting a
healthy environment.

Direct Deposit Program
GDOE would like to invite all employees
to participate in the direct deposit program
so that your pay check is deposited directly
into your checking or savings account; no
need to get stuck in traffic on payday or
wait in lines at the bank.
We have been piloting this program with a
small group to work out the kinks and ensure your paycheck is in your account on
payday Friday.
Direct deposit form was emailed.

Please fill it out and send or scan to our Payroll Division; the email address is payroll@gdoe.net.
Please also attach a voided check or confirmation from your bank of your account and
routing number. You should receive payment through your checking or savings account the second payday after you turn in
the form.

Math Kangaroo
41st Annual Scripps
Regional Spelling Bee
The annual competition was
held on Saturday March 9, 2013
at the Sheraton Laguna Guam
Resort.
GDOE had 30 student representatives in the contest with four
of our public school students
placing in the top ten.
On Friday, March 22, 2013, 135 GDOE students from six of our schools competed in the Annual Math Kangaroo Competition. While the results will not be known until sometime in May,
all participants were extremely enthusiastic on the day. It should be noted that aside from the
participation of our schools shown below, FBLG Middle School had the lone secondary participant in the 7th Grade competition! Hopefully the 2014 competition will see more schools and
students competing as it is open to all public and private schools for students in grades 1-12.
A 4th grade student from Wettengel Elementary and a 6th
grade student from L.P. Untalan
Middle tied for third place;
A 4th grade student from OrdotChalan Pago Elementary took
fifth place; and
A 7th grade student from Oceanview Middle took sixth place.

Fun Run or Walk Against Underage Drinking
Walk or Bike
to School Day
Wednesday, May 8, 2013, is
Walk or Bike to School Day.
Nearly 40% of our school children are overweight or obese.
Walk to School Day began in
1997 and grew into an annual
national and international event.
The focus is on children and
adults walking or bicycling to
school. Every year in May and
October thousands of people in
the United States and twenty
other countries walk to school
together to encourage parents,
students and local officials to:
•Develop life-long safe walking
habits.
•Provide the health benefits of
walking.
•Realize how much fun walking can be.
•Create safe and more walk
friendly communities.
•Spend healthy, active time
with friends, family and the
community.

Island-wide Board of Governing Students (IBOGS)
Students interested in running for the Island-wide Board of Governing Students (IBOGs) shall inquire with their respective school principal on the necessary steps in order to do so. Each public high school shall elect two members to the IBOGs during the month of May. The IBOGs meet at least once
a month to discuss matters relating to Guam's public education system and
make recommendations to Guam Education Board. The following qualifications must be met in order to run for an IBOG position:
•Must be a freshman, sophomore, or junior attending a public high school.
•Must be nominated by a petition signed by no less than a total of 100 freshmen, sophomores, juniors, or seniors.
•Must attend the school they represent for the duration of their tenure as a
Island-Wide member.
•Must have and maintain during their tenure as a Island-Wide Board member
a 2.5 grade point average.
•May not be under suspension or on academic probation at the time of nomination.
All students that meet the qualifications are invited to run for the positions at
their schools. Students that are interested are encouraged to talk to their current IBOG representative for more information as well.
Internship Experience
Karen Grande—My overall internship experience at GDOE internship helped me develop necessary skills and improve my knowledge base, and it has assured me that I chose the right field of
study. I feel I will be more confident in myself and my abilities.Prior to starting, I was extremely
nervous because I had no idea of what to expect or if I would be able to meet my supervisor’s expectations. But after my first day of work, I felt very relieved to learn that my supervisor was receptive to questions regarding my duties and responsibilities and very helpful in assisting me to
become familiar with the department’s new Financial Management Information System - Munis,
which manages their core functions more efficiently. I realized that during my internship I was
enjoying accounting and has reaffirmed my decision to become an accountant. Good thing since
graduation is just around the corner in May.

One of the best things about my internship at DOE was having the opportunity to meet new people.
The staff made the workplace environment such a friendly place to be in. The feeling of being welcomed the moment I stepped foot in the business office made me look forward to working the next
day and applying for a job. I believe that what surrounds an intern in the workplace is part of what
helps the intern decide whether he or she wants to be with that organization in the long run or not.
With that said and experiencing how new employees are trained, I can definitely see myself being
employed with DOE in the near future.

Newest members to Central Office
INTERNAL AUDIT OFFICE
Carmela Vi is the newest addition to the Guam Department of Education’s (GDOE) Internal Audit Office (IAO)
replacing the late Ernesto Sales who will be forever
missed. She is a recent graduate of the University of Guam
with a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and Business Administration with a concentration in Human Resources.
Carmela joins IAO as an Auditor I and is tasked to monitor
rnon-appropriated funds (NAF) and assist with special projects.

Professional Development
No Classes for students
Although she is a new employee, Carmela is not new to
GDOE. Before coming on board as an internal auditor,she
worked as a project consultant for Warbird Consulting
Partners,a contracted third-party project company assisting GDOE in the implementation of its new Financial Management Information System - Munis; extracting pertinent information from Human Resources records for input into Munis; and training employees on several modules. During her internship with the Department, Carmelaassisted with the fixed asset inventory under the Office of Supply Management
and Procurement.
Currently Carmela is conducting audits of school-based NAF activities and assisting
in the Department’s financial audit for Fiscal Year 2012. She is grateful to work with
such a professional team and believes that this provides an excellent opportunity to
develop her career in accounting and auditing. In the near future, Carmela plans to
become a licensed Certified Public Accountant and obtain additional financialrelated certifications that she feels will benefit her professional growth.
FINANACIAL AFFAIRS
Ronald Limjap is the newest member of Guam Department of Education’s Financial Affairs Office. He enters
the team as an Accountant I. He is assigned to work
with the Special Education program. He is working with
the senior accountants to learn the tasks required for
his new job and is also assisting in various projects.
Ronald is a graduate of the University of Guam with a
Bachelor’s of Business Administration in Accounting.

- FREE FAMILY ACTIVITY ABOUT GUAM'S WATER: Families are invited to see one of Guam's natural wonders at 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 30, in Tumon Bay. Hydrogeologist Ramon Camacho will lead a guided tour of Tumon Bay to find areas where theNorthern
Guam Lens "seeps" into Tumon Bay. The hike will be approximately one and a half hour long. Those interested in participating should
meet at the Ypao Beach lifeguard tower at 3 p.m. and bring a water bottle, sunscreen and sturdy shoes. For more information

- FREE CONTESTS FOR KIDS AND FAMILIES: Students of all ages are reminded
the deadlines for Earth Day 2013 are approaching. Contest entries for the Hike for a
Day, Model your Watershed, Young Reporters, Comic Book Creation and Environmental Stewardship contests are due the second week of April. Contest forms are

- HEALTHY GUAM. HEALTHY YOU: High school students from across the island
are invited to learn about healthy activities growing local food and learning about

- SAVE MONEY BY GROWING YOUR OWN FRUITS, VEGGIES AND HERBS: A
free workshop about using compost and sheet mulching will be offered from 10 a.m.
to noon on Saturday, March 31 at the UOG Triton Farm and Ag Experiment Station
on Wusstig Road in Dededo. This Earth Day 2013 workshop includes easy ways for
families to save money through composting and other natural methods to growing
fruits, vegetables and herbs. The event is free and open to the public. Registration is

tour of the cliff caves at Ritidian at
9:30 a.m., noon and 2:30 p.m. on
Saturday, April 6, at the Guam National Wildlife Refuge. The hike will

- READY, SET, SNORKEL IN ASAN!: Families are invited to get in the water with the National Park Serivce from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m.
Saturday, April 6. The snorkel will take participants through the wonders of the marine side of the War in the Pacific National Park with

hike will include a guided tour of the park with information about the park ecosystem and history that made the park a national landmark. Youth from ages 10 and up are welcome to follow park rangers up a ridge for a breathtaking view of Asan. Afterwards, explore

- KIDS FRESHWATER FISHING
DERBY: The Guam Environmental
Education Committee is hosting a
free kids freshwater fishing derby
from 7 a.m. to noon on Sunday,
April 14, at the Masso Reservoir
Nature Area. The derby is free and
open to ages 16 and under. Children will be fishing for local fish,
tilapia and freshwater eel. Prizes
will be awarded for the longest fish,
free nature hikes throughout the area and educational materials. Registration is not required but more information can be found at epa.guam.gov or by
emailing tammyjoanderson.taft@epa.guam.gov.
- YOUR HOME. LESS WASTE: Families are invited to learn about how to reduce the amount of waste in their home to eventually
