Melville AUSSI ________________________________________________________________________ Marlin of the Month and Club Points The first swim of each club night is the “Marlin” Swim in which swimmers gain points towards the Marlin of the Month and Club Points Awards. At the beginning of each year an average time is calculated for each club member, for each event, from swims the previous year. Club points are calculated on this average time until the swimmer betters this time, then the points are calculated on the best time for the current year. Points are allocated according to the following points scale; 1 point for completing the first event (>2 seconds slower than best time) 2 points for being within 0 and 2 seconds slower than best time 3 points for being faster than best time by up to 1 second 4 points for being faster than best time by more than 1 second A change was implemented allowing each swimmer to win only one Marlin of the Month badge each year. Sean O’Shaughnessy presents the Marlin of the Year 2004 to Amanda Smith Points accumulated over the year go towards the Club Points Awards. In 1998 the City of Melville donated a perpetual trophy, presented to the club member gaining the most points over the year. Trophy winners are listed in Table 4.1. Since having a 50m indoor pool we have not had to worry about the weather conditions and have moved the carnival from its regular February timeslot to April. It is an occasion when the whole club gets together and every member helps out in some way. A feature of the carnival has been the excellent spread of food provided by members and coordinated by Rita Blom, and more recently Jaki Smith, for swimmers, helpers and friends to enjoy after the meet. In 2004 the State Championships were held outside of Perth for the first time, and a large group from Melville AUSSI travelled to Geraldton to compete. Other popular meets have been the Mandurah and Margaret River Swims. Clubs competed in Interclub events during the year and were graded on the results for the end of year Club Challenge. Melville was put in the A Grade final with the big three clubs – Claremont, Somerset and Osborne Park. We took up the challenge and with over 40 members swimming on the day won by 8 points – a huge achievement. We didn’t make it to the A grade final again, but did collect almost a complete set of pennants before the Pennant events ceased 1998 Group A Frank Mongan Pennant 1st 1999 Group B David Cummins Pennant 1st 2000 Group C Fred Johnson Pennant 1st 2001 Group B David Cummins Pennant 2nd Bob Dunstan 2001 Melbourne, VIC 2002 Sydney, NSW 2003 Perth, WA A large contingent 2004 Adelaide, SA Ivan Martinovich, Teresa Phillips 2005 Hobart, TAS 2006 Canberra, ACT Sam McLennan 2007 Darwin, NT Sam McLennan Roy, Gordon, John and Alan at the Darwin Nationals World Masters Swim 1998 Casablanca, Morocco 2000 Munich, Germany 2002 Christchurch, New Zealand 2004 Riccione, Italy 2006 San Francisco, USA Carol McLean and Peter Hau proudly display the 1998 and 1999 Pennants National Swims 1998 Hobart, TAS 1999 Darwin, NT Gordon Medcalf, Noela Medcalf, Alan Neill, Tracy Altria, Nancy Davies, Ian Davies, Margaret Bolton, Carol McLean, Roy Weir, John Pope 2000 Gladstone, QLD Masters Games 1998 Alice Springs Gordon Medcalf, Noela Medcalf 1998 Albany Gordon Medcalf, Noela Medcalf, Peter Hau, Robert Gillard, Jay Stephenson 1999 Broome Gordon Medcalf, Noela Medcalf 2000 Alice Springs Gordon Medcalf, Noela Medcalf 2000 Albany Gordon Medcalf, Noela Medcalf, Rob Gillard, Peter Hau, 18 ________________________________________________________________________ Melville AUSSI ________________________________________________________________________ Peter, Rhonda, Gordon and Noela at the Broome Masters Games 2001 Broome Gordon Medcalf, Noela Medcalf, Peter Maloney, Rhonda Maloney 2001 Fremantle Michael Bench, Rita Blom, Lorna Clark, Renee Dallimore, Nancy Davies, Nina Dyke, Peter Hau, Noela Medcalf, Gordon Medcalf, Teresa Phillips 2002 Alice Springs Gordon Medcalf, Noela Medcalf 2002 World Masters Games, Melbourne Gordon Medcalf, Noela Medcalf 2003 Fremantle Ivan Martinovich, Amanda Smith, Hilary Beck, Teresa Phillips, Lorna Clark, Gordon Medcalf, Noela Medcalf, Kelly Hughes, Nancy Davies 2004 Alice Springs Gordon Medcalf, Noela Medcalf, Rita Blom Indian Pacific Masters Games Geraldton Teresa Phillips 2005 Fremantle Teresa Phillips, Lorna Clark, Gordon Medcalf, Noela Medcalf, Peter Hau 2006 Alice Springs Gordon Medcalf, Teresa Phillips 2007 Fremantle Teresa Phillips, Lorna Clark Pan Pacific Masters Swimming Championships Perth 1999 Perth played host to international swimmers in 1999. 35 Melville members took the opportunity to compete at an International meet without the expense of travelling. It’s a great way to get fit and gain points for the club at the same time. Members can set challenges according to their ability, whether it be completing a set of 5 400m freestyles, doing a one hour swim, or perhaps even completing all of the aerobics swims in the year. It is calculated from club points and aerobic points. Strangely enough, members are not that enthusiastic to receive this award, but as can be seen from the winners in Table 4.6, they are in good company. and has become a valued club member. In 2003 this trophy was renamed the John Devereaux trophy, because John was always very much involved in encouraging new and old members alike to have a go. It is hoped that the award will encourage the member to continue their involvement with the club. Deciding on a recipient is always a hard choice, because we would like to encourage all of our new members. Many of the past winners are still active members. Our club would not be the same without them. Amazingly, six of them have gone on to swim solo to Rottnest. Others have regularly held positions on the club committee, or figured prominently in other club awards. 2006 1998 1998 1999 1999 1999 1998 2004 Table 4.9 New Member Encouragement Award 1992 Wendy Jacobs 1993 Miranda Duncan 1994 Carol McLean 1995 Doug McLean 1996 Teresa Phillips 1997 Natalie Kirby 1998 Renee DALLIMORE 1999 Nina Dyke 2000 Lynne Alguire 2001 Marie Hoban 2002 Dave Reynolds 2003 Martin Smith 2004 Jane Loveday 2005 Alan Potter 2006 Julie O’Connor 2007 Evelina Paraschivoiu 25 ________________________________________________________________________ The Next Ten Years 1998-2007 ________________________________________________________________________ Open Water Swimming Members have the opportunity to compete in Open Water Swims nearly every weekend during summer. Swims range in distance from the 750m Coogee Jetty to Jetty to the 20km Rottnest Channel Swim, and from Albany to Gerladton. Melville AUSSI has two perpetual trophies for Open Water Swims. The swim was from the Left Bank to Bicton and Back, a distance of 7km. There was also a 7km duo swim, with the swimmers changing over at Bicton, or a 3.5km swim from Bicton to the Left Bank. In 2004, the swim was the named the Taylor Marine BBB Swim and was run from Bicton to the Left Bank and Back. In 2005 the weather forecast was diabolical which kept numbers down, but the morning of the swim dawned fine, breezy and cool, but not raining. We had over 70 swimmers. Thanks to sponsorship from Resolve Financial Services, the profit from the swim was in excess of $2000. In 2006 the swim was named the Resolve River Swim, and was held as a 7km solo swim from Bicton to the Left Bank and Back, and a 1.6km swim in Bicton Bay. There were 167 entrants. Thanks to sponsorship from Resolve Financial Services, the swim raised in excess of $5000. Part of the funds is to be used to purchase a wheelchair for Melville Aquatic Centre. The BBB is a whole of club activity and members’ involvement is crucial, whether it be setting the course, support paddler, recording the results, cooking the sausages or any of the numerous jobs that make a successful swim. We continue to welcome the New Year with a swim at Cottesloe Beach on New Years day, followed by a breakfast at the Surf Club. Later in January, the Memorial Swim is contested at Rockingham Beach followed by fun (cheating) team games then back to the Medcalfs’ house at Shoalwater for a barbeque lunch and a game of bocce on the front lawn. The golf day has had a change of venue, but is still a popular day for golfers and nongolfers alike. The Rottnest weekend is always well attended by members, and is enjoyed by all. Each Thursday Night we congregate in the meeting room at the Melville Fitness and Aquatic Centre for a drink with cheese and biscuits, and if we are lucky, a cake to celebrate a birthday. The first Thursday of each month is Hearty Meal Night when members each bring a plate of food to share.
