Military Vehicle displays, with our vehicles
positioned next to warbirds and living history

Mustangs and More at the Nut Tree Airport near
Vacaville. This event features as many as 20 real,
live, P-51 Mustangs flown in from various parts of
the country displayed next to hundreds (literally)
of Ford Mustangs from various local clubs and
individuals. Of course, Military Vehicles play a
key part in the display and activities, including
"Follow-Me" jeeps and VIP transport.

The annual CAMP GRIDLEY event at the Butte
County Fairgrounds, 199 E. Hazel St. Gridley,
California. hosted by the Northern Recon Group.
If you enjoy driving your MV you will enjoy this
event! Participants will convoy over less traveled
roads, navigate challenging hills and trails at the
Clay Pits off-road park, drive scenic back roads
with stops at historic sites on Casual Convoy Day,
enjoy great chow and awards ceremony. Camping, display and vendor sites are $30.00 per night
with full hookups. Tent sites are $15.00 per night.
Clean restrooms and showers. No reservations
required. Payment is due at arrival. Come whenever. Stay one or more nights.

Hello to all of the membership! This is my first article for the newsletter as your North Bay VP. I
would like to start by thanking all of the members
for casting their votes for all of the candidates. I
hope to do the position justice. I have some big
shoes to fill. I would also like to thank the outgoing
VP, John Neuenburg for his dedicated service to the
club and this position.
I hope the membership enjoyed America’s Birthday
and had their MV’s out in force! I participated in the
Benicia Twilight parade along with other members
on the 3rd of July.
It was a beautiful evening and the parade had great
attendance.
If you have never participated in this parade it is
well worth the drive. We had 9 MV’s and numerous
reenactors.
I also got reports from the Napa and Calistoga Parades. Greg Lalonde and C.J. Bertagna represented
in the Napa 4th Parade. Also our last month’s
“Cover Boy” John Sorenson and Octavio Agularia
won best in show and a Blue Ribbon for best in
class for their rendition of the Liberation of Parris
1944.Outstanding men!
We have numerous events going on for the remainder of the summer. So, lets get out there and promote this great club!
I am personally been banging the drum for this
event that is near and dear to my heart. It is the Spirit of 45’ at Kelly Park down in San Jose. I have been
a part of this event since the beginning and it
NEEDS to be promoted by the club and its members! It is a weekend event and is a great mix of
Vets, Living History, Great Music, and MV’s.

Hello from the Central Valley!
Well, it’s been one hot summer so it’s been fairly
quiet around here. We did have some have a good
showing this spring. First we had the Chowchilla
parade with a few vehicles show up, the open cockpit
day at Castle Air Museum on Memorial Day. We had
a nice turn out of club members displaying their
vehicles. Some of the members that participated in
that one were George Smith, John Verrismo, Chris
Thomas, Jim Bertao, and quite a few more. The
management at Castle Air Museum loves our
displays and would like to see us return, but with
more members and vehicles to display. The last event
this summer was Eagle Field dinner and dance. It was
definitely warm out there but everyone had a good
time. The show was slightly smaller than usual due to
some difficulties with the runway preventing the
larger warbirds such as the PV2 Harpoon and B-25
bombers from coming in but we decided not to let
that keep us from running around with the vehicles
and having fun.
As of writing this, I have just returned from England
from the War & Peace Revival show with Chris
Thomas, Don Wadley, and Ken Wadley. It was my
first trip over and definitely worth going. I’ll include
a write up about it in the next newsletter.
I’d like to start getting the word out earlier this year
about the Fresno Veteran’s Day Parade on November
11. It is a nice parade and it would be nice to see
more members participating. If you’re interested in
joining the parade, feel free to contact me.

Greetings from the North!
This is my first newsletter message as your newly elected Northern Region VP (area codes 916 and 530). Each month
I will keep you up to date on local and regional news and events. If I get motivated enough (and have any free time
between projects) I may even write an article or two. I encourage you to send in an article on your MV or restoration
project or an AAR (After Action Report) on an event you attended.
By the time you read this, the MVPA Convention in Portland will be part of MV history. I hope you had a great time if
you attended. If you missed it, there will be plenty of pictures and articles in future MVCC newsletters covering the
convention.
Here are some of the events coming up in the Northern Region:
September 15-22, 2013 - Camp Delta at Tower Park. (OK, I know Lodi isn't in the Northern Region, but I had to
mention this one...) See more info elsewhere.
September 28th, 2013 - Cameron Park Show N' Shine & Fly-In at Cameron Airpark. We've had a small detachment of
Military Vehicles at this show for the last three of four years, which features custom cars, hot rods, airplanes and of
course Military Vehicles. MVs are displayed free at this show, near the Warbird contingent and National Guard display. This is a good opportunity to display your vehicle and talk to a lot of people about the hobby. It's on Saturday,
September 28, 2013, 0700-1500. Admission is free with a small parking fee (unless you bring a Military Vehicle and

Hello to every one in the east bay. The Benicia 3rd night parade was bigger then ever this year. I put my M135, M38A1
and WC1 in the parade this year and loved every minute of
it. There were some 10 vehicles in the parade this year and a
lot of re-enactors who walked ahead of the vehicles. The
next morning on July 4th I had all 3 vehicles in the American Canyon parade and got 1st, 2nd and 3rd place awards.
Napa parade had 2 vehicles in there parade and got 1st place.
PHOTOS ATTACHED! I got this info from
Mr. Dan McCabe the other day. I would like to see a lot of
support from the club on this.
I am with the Golden Hills Mustang Club and associated
with Wounded Warriors Family Support. On October 5th, I
will have the 2013 Wide Body Super Snake Shelby at the
Jelly Belly Factory in Fairfield and would like you and your
group to join us to be part of this tour. I am one of the
drivers that is taking this Shelby to all 48 contiguous states.

South Seas Luau Planned for September Camp Delta
Time to trot out your aloha shirts, muumuus, and khakis as we fight the “Battle of Waikiki Beach” on
Friday night September 20, 2013! It’s time for a themed dinner party and what could be better for a
warm late-summer evening at Tower Park?
No we won’t be burying a smoldering pig in the peat dirt, but expect better than fried SPAM!

Spud Gun Shoot Planned at Fall Camp Delta 2013
Potato-shooting cannons will take the stage at the Fall meet after a long absence. Back in the days of
the Big Bear, Casa de Fruta, and other events, these starchy tubers contributed to the fun-factor when
launched from various forms of compressed air devices. The design of these "guns" is limited only by
the imagination of the builder. Some can launch a delectable carbohydrate bullet a long way, some with
great accuracy, and some, well, just eat potatoes. It's all good!
Please bring your hardware and spuds if you would like to participate. These should be compressed air
devices only, not the explosive type. Tentatively the demonstration will be Friday morning on the levee
with hard targets on land plus on the river for distance competition. We are looking for a couple compressors and a small generator. Contact John Neuenburg if you can help. 415-306-3607.
British MV Display at Scottish Event in Pleasanton August 31-September 1, 2013
We are looking for British and Commonwealth MVs and/or militaria for a display at the 148th Scottish
Gathering & Games on Labor Day weekend at the Alameda County Fairgrounds in Pleasanton. This is
the largest annual Scottish festival in the U.S. and the crowd appreciates military history. We will be in
the living history area of the show, likely with pavement, grass, and shade. See the competitions in
dancing, pipes, drums, drum majors, bands, Highland heavy games, sheep dogs, falconry, archery, and
visit over 60 clan tents to learn about your heritage. This is a large vendor event and of course there is
plenty of British food and beer available. Even whiskey tasting. Music entertainment includes folk singers and Celtic rock bands. RV and tent camping is available Th-Sun. with info on their website but hurry for reservations. We are working out the possibility of camping at the display in military tents.

Well I need to get this written before the deadline
and before I get very busy getting ready for the
Convention.
I had only three vehicles signed up for both the
Monterey 4th of July Parade and the Seaside
“Parade of Champions” on July 7th. Last minute
calls from Joe Cavallaro and Rob Albanese
before the parade, let me get them added to the
roster of both parades.
The Monterey Parade is rather a short one, down
Alvarado St; 2 blocks, ½ block on Del Monte
Blvd. then 2 more blocks up Calle Principal.
There were a lot of people packed into those 4 ½
blocks, they were 3 to 5 deep on the sidewalks.
Weather for Monterey was great with not a cloud
in the sky.
I was upset with the “organizers” as they changed
the order of the parade at the last minute and as
we passed each of the announcing stands (there
were three) we were introduced to the crowd as
“Medal of Honor” winners, rather than the
Military Vehicle Collectors of Ca. The Medal of
Honor winners were several units behind us and I
was unable to hear how they were introduced.
Other than that it was a
successful event. The Seaside Parade was quite a
bit longer but not as well attended, same five
vehicles attended.
I’m planning to leave here on the 21st, heading
for Yreka and Ricks, to help him load up the
LRDG truck and then head for the Convention on
Wed. morning. Hope to see you at the
Convention. I see that Dave needs a photo of me
for the Newsletter. I’ll send him a couple and he
can pick one that he likes best.

Hello to all from the East Bay,
Rumor has it that the Alameda July 4th Parade is now
the longest in the state and members of the MVCC were
there. The group rendezvoused at the Alameda Naval
Air Museum before 0900 Hrs. received a briefing and
their parade number 78 out of a total of 178+ entries,
raced over to be at the staging area “hurry up and wait”
for the start.
There were 7 vehicles, consisting of jeeps, CUCV, and
a ’41 G-506.The jeeps were fully loaded with passengers in civilian and military attire. The number of period uniformed participants spoke well of the patriotism
of the entry and represented a good cross section of the
services. Liz Phelan, in a Khaki nurse uniform and Pit
O’Malley, in full Marine Corps gear. O’Malley, ground
pounded the entire route and “Warrant Officer” Jim
Bundgarrd followed in his ’41 G-506. The group was
led by Larry Pirack, in his flag-festooned jeep, towing
the Naval Air Museum’s A7 Navy fighter wing tank on
a bomb trailer. Larry was wearing his “Hawaiian Tactical Field dress”. The floral print on his shirt was so
loud that it was difficult to hear the marching bands.
His wife Gwen, sat shotgun wearing her W.A.S.P. shirt
and British pith helmet. Scott Vizcarra, WWI “Dough
Boy” squeezed into the rear seat. Kevin Karvonen’s MP
jeep, with 30 cal. machine gun and John and Robert
Foresman-Morrsey as M.P.’s. Willy Denninger, in his
late model air conditioned jeep sedan, as a ‘Candy
Man’, followed by B.J. Parma at full capacity with Joe
Menard, Sam Perdue and Al Grizzo. Right behind was
Carol Parma’s jeep, driven by Mike Carrion with his
wife Debbie. Next was Terri Karvonen in her CUCV
with passenger Jeri. Pulling up the rear in ‘trail position’ was Jim Bundgarrd’s Army Chevy 1½ ton truck.
Refreshments were served at the museum’s Crows Nest
and 6 guests from the Disabled Veterans of Foreign
Wars attended.

1953 Dodge M37 or M56(?) Military 4x4 Fire truck.
Correct original 6-cylinder T-245 flathead engine, 4speed transmission with extremely rare Tangen power
take-off located on top of the transmission. Approx.
128" original extended wheelbase. I am told this was
running when parked - have not verified that yet.
According to one source, only 130 of these were made,
but it also says in 1955, and this is a 1953. Tires are all
rotten. Back of truck is completely open with none of
the original tanks, pump, or any other fire equipment.
Looks like a set of ladder racks on the RH side. There is
some body damage on the right rear.
This was very nicely built with some use of aluminum.

FOR SALE: Five 11:00 x 20: ND tread MIL SPEC
tires. Some ND CC and some ND chevron pattern. 2x
are Firestone, 3x are Uniroyal. 2x with 50% + tread; 2x
with 5-10% tread; 1x good for spare. Generally in good
condition. Good news is they are FREE to a good
home. Bad news is that they are on rims I’d like to
keep. Dismount costs locally are around $25.00 per
tire. All must go as a set – no partials.

The Santa Barbara 4th of July parade is organized by a civic organization, the Spirit of 1776.
Each year it has a different theme - this year it was "AMERICA THE BEAUTIFUL".
Even though Santa Barbara is no longer a military town and the city tries hard to obliterate any traces of its
WW II history - like tearing down a huge hangar built in 1942, the 4th of July parade as well as the Veterans
Day parade always bring out a sizeable number of military themed entries - mostly due to the efforts of a
group of dedicated volunteers from Santa Barbara and environs.
Unfortunately the military establishment was missing except for a color guard - perhaps a victim of
sequestration? We will never know..........
The turnout was large - the town was full of tourists and especially the exposition of our military vehicles in
the 400 block of State Street upon the conclusion of the parade drew many interested citizens.
Afterwards we parked our vehicles on the beach boulevard in front of the Veterans memorial building.
Again many people inspected our vehicles and asked questions.
We left before the fireworks started to avoid the traffic congestion.........

Rob had a sign advising tourists they could have their picture taken in a real WW II military vehicle for
a donation of $1.00. At times the line stretched to more than a dozen!

The Go-Devil G.I. Jeep club participated in the Manteca Independence Day parade, on July 4th, 2013. We
had seven jeeps in attendance (four GPWs and two Willys), as well as two reproduction US Military bicycles
(one M305 and one M306). We were also joined by a ½ scale Willys slat grill jeep. We had an excellent
time, even though the ‘Mini’ jeep conked out half way through the parade. No problem, with the two
bicycles controlling traffic, the Military Police came to the rescue and towed the vehicle for the duration of
the parade. It was just another example of the kind of good old American ingenuity that, over the last 237
years, has come to make the United States the greatest country in the world. God Bless America!

The Rose White an Blue parade in San Jose was attended by 8 vehicles. The parade was very nice, we
were in the second quarter of the units and had no breakdowns even with the 100 degree heat!
In attendance were: John Amaral, Jim Adams, Kurt Lesser, Phil Tracy, Tom Lamar, Derek Lyons,
Peter Wong, and Aaron Horrocks.
