Loading a GPW into a Waco CG-4A glider built by the Ford Motor Company in Kingsford, MI.
The CG-4A wingspan was 83.6 feet and its overall length was 48 feet. The floor of the glider was made
of honeycombed plywood and provided great load carrying strength allowing the glider to carry 4,000
pounds, 625 more pounds than the glider's empty weight. The CG-4A may look simple to build but in
actuality there are over 70,000 parts. There were over 13,000 CG-4As manufactured by 16 companies
during WW2.

July 5th 2015
Just got back from the Seaside parade, we did the
Monterey parade yesterday. There was a little
“Snafu” at the Monterey check in; as they did not
have any information on our unit. I never did receive
any paper work from the organizers. But they managed to work things out and get us in the parade.
However the announcers don’t work well; if it isn’t
on their cheat sheet, they have no clue as what to say
about the military vehicles coming down the street.
The Monterey parade was attended by the regulars,
myself, Marc Goldman, and Damon Viola (LK too).
Not sure but the crowd looked much larger this year
than in the past. They were 4 to 5 deep all along Alvarado St and up Calle Principal.
Goldman was honored to be in the parade twice;
the vehicle that was supposed to carry a “Medal of
Honor Winner” was a no show, so they nabbed Mark
to do the honors, and he then was first in line. The
parade staff held us back until he came around to
again lead us down Alvarado St.
Just to make sure that it wasn’t my “SNAFU”; when
I got home I check my e-mail sent box. Sure enough
there was my message to the Parade folks with application attached sent on May 27th, long before their
deadline, along with their response. See Hillary
those e-mails are still out there. :-)
The Seaside Parade was at best; sad. They had canceled it earlier this year and then when it was reinstated, I think many of the past participants made
other plans. So consequently it wasn’t very long.
Again the regulars showed up. The Staff showed that
Clint Thrasher and another MV were signed up but
they were both no shows.
I don’t know of any local events in the near future. I
am hoping to join George Escobedo for the “Spirit of
45 Weekend” in San Jose on the weekend of
Aug.8th. And from what information I am able to
find on the internet; it looks like “Warbirds over
Paso 2015” (August 29th) has been cancelled. If anyone has information to the contrary please let me
know.

Hello North Bay West! I hope everyone cast their
votes for all of the open positions within the club.
I would also like to wish all of the members a
very Happy 4th of July! I hope that the membership got out and participated in your local community events!
I would like to report on a nice little event
that the crew of PBR 210 participated in on Flag
Day. The event was in Suisun City. We had
about 6 MV’s that showed up. The American Armory Museum brought out 3 rigs, Sonny Hanson
was there and John Sorenson with his “Motley
Crew of Scallywags” was in attendance. The
American Legion put on a very proper Flag Day
ceremony and the Suisun Fire Dept. was there to
assist with disposal of worn out flags. It was nice
to see a community come out and celebrate our
glorious “Stars and Stripes!
There is many events upcoming in August
is our A.O. (Area of Operation), so if you have
the time come on out and participate. Hope to see
you all out there!

spring Tower Park showcase
CUCV/LSSV to be Featured at the 2016 Camp Delta at Tower Park April Meet
Ex-MVCC VP Jeff Degraff called to suggest we do a CUCV display next April. Why not? There are quite a
few of these around and they are an affordable military truck that deserves attention. It’s time to honor them!
The Commercial Utility Cargo Vehicles pronounced CUCK-Vees and sometimes called Cut-Vees were built
in the 1980s-2000s by General Motors. Militarizing civilian trucks to create low cost, rear area support
vehicles began with the Kaiser Jeep M-715 series and continued with Dodge pickup-based trucks built in
1976-1977 as the M880 4x4 and M890 4x2 series. They were to replace Gamma Goats and M151 variants in
rear area roles, freeing up the purpose-built military trucks for tactical use, later including the HMMWV.
CUCVs were based on 2 and 4 door pickups, 2 and 4 door SUVs such as Blazer and Suburban, and there
were ambulances. Near the end these evolved into the Light Service Support Vehicle with some being built
by AM General.
Jeff will be POC for this CUCV/LSSV display on Friday April 22, 2016 and he would love to hear if you can
bring your truck. Any condition! He will release his contact info soon. If you are a vendor looking for
considerable exposure in MVCC News, at the event, and in internet forums, contact us to sponsor the
People’s Choice awards. This is a $450 sponsorship and can be augmented by newsletter ads.
Contact John Neuenburg about this at 415-491-1601.

Fall Tower Park seminar
Hello Fellow MVCCers.
Ernie and I (Mike Rinehart) will be talking about Dodges at a seminar we are putting together for the
September (fall) swapmeet at Tower Park, and will include my experience with restorations.
I have just finished a 3.5 year, 3,000+ hour exhaustive frame off restoration of a Dodge WC40. I had a lot of
things go as planned, and a lot of things that did not. Which is par for a project of this magnitude. I do know
that a lot of the people in the hobby have budgets. And I feel that I experienced some things that need to be
passed on to save other hobbyist the grief I have experienced in this project.
Two things got me more in the wallet than needed were (1) bad or just wrong parts, and (2) big time venders
that charged a lot to rebuild things only to discover later some items or parts failed, exposing their horrible
workmanship. The later really cost me a lot in money and time. Looking back I feel this was something
totally unnecessary that could be avoided.
One part almost ruined a brand new engine and another could have burned up the entire truck, for example. I
also made some timing mistakes in purchasing parts that made it difficult to return some of the wrong parts
that were really for civilian trucks or in some cases I still do not know the correct vehicle the parts were for.
I hope to pass on the stories of my battle scars saving you from getting as many as I did on my project on
your own restoration projects.
Thank God I have an extremely understanding wife. So much so that we are picking up a couple Dodge 3/4
ton Command Cars a WC56 and WC57 this month. I guess we never learn, because here we go again! LOL
As always thanks for your time,
Mike Rinehart

2015 MVPA Convention at Topeka, KS
By John Neuenburg
The Military Vehicle Preservation Association celebrated their 40th anniversary in Topeka, KS in June,
thanks to members of their affiliate club Rolling Thunder Living History Educational Foundation plus
members of nearby MV clubs who helped. Marilynn and I set up a MVCC info table with our banner and
club brochures plus a strong emphasis on our convention next year via table signs, brochures, and a large two
-sided banner on poles. We talked with numerous people who are planning to come to our event and many
will spend extra days touring other places in our region. This is a button we are pushing because of the wide
variety of tourist attractions that will bring more people to our show than is typical of MVPA conventions,
especially couples and families. We even met a prominent Italian MV collector who is organizing a group of
50 Italians to visit California for two weeks around our show! Many people from the middle and eastern U.S.
were familiar with our Tower Park event. Having a large pair of articles by Chris Hughes in Supply Line last
month helped, as did our full page color 2016 convention ad in Military Vehicles magazine and on the back
of the 2015 Program. The MVCC is definitely on the map!
This show was in a large air conditioned building connected to an oval indoor sports arena. There were
around 340 vendor tables in the main building plus some more in an adjacent non-air conditioned building
with a dirt floor that were sold at a lower cost. Quite a few tables went unsold. Some MVs were in the vendor
building and most were in the arena plus some outside. I counted 120 vehicles on Friday. There were several
really nice displays that incorporated mannequins and various militaria. An MVPA convention is where
members really like to pull out the stops and this can pay off because of the annual Best Display, Best
Vehicle Display, and Judges Choice awards which can be influenced by non-MV collectibles.
Our 2016 convention brochure and flyer is available to you for handing out in your travels. Just contact me at
in_garage@hotmail.com and ask for files you can print at home. These look great on stands by or on your
MV. We will have some available at the Fall meet at Tower Park. These will be available for downloading
on our website soon. We want to set a MV record (275) at our show and it is important to get the word out to
the unaffiliated MV owners we run into who know little about the MVCC or our events. By the way these are
perfect for distribution at veteran’s halls and to Cub and Boy Scout units.
