Upcoming Events
Pistons, Pin-Ups, and Pinot on the Runway, Saturday October 10, Sonoma By John Neuenburg
It's time to have a little fun at an end of summer bash! This car, MV, and airplane show will be at Sonoma
Valley Airport aka "Schellville Airport," 4 miles south of Sonoma on Hwy 121. Spectators 1100-1600 with
airplanes to arrive before 0930. Hot rods, classics, exotics, rat rods, military vehicles, motorcycles, and
tractors before 0930 if possible. Pre-registered vehicle exhibitors will have access to a VIP hangar with a
coffee bar in the early morning; a very nice catered lunch featuring wines, cold beer, water and soda; a nice
event tote bag; dash plaque; a photo op with your vehicle next to a P-40N or P-51. Heartstrings Bridge will
perform great 60s, 70s music live. Feel free to wear your vintage uniform or clothes to suit the occasion.
There will be People's Choice awards in various categories. Prizes include warbird ride vouchers for P-40
Warhawk, P-51 Mustang, AT-6 Texan, Stearman biplane trainer, or flight jackets. It may be possible to
store a MV the night before or after if that helps your logistics. Contact John about that or options for
RVing overnight. The event poster and registration form is at http://www.planefunsonoma.com. General
information about the airport is at http://www.sonomavalleyairport.com. Feel free to pass this info to your
friends including warbird owners. Let's help them make this a big annual event! For MV-related info, contact John Neuenburg at in_garage@hotmail.com or 415-491-1601.
Brass in the Grass, Sunday October 11, Lake Sonoma Near Geyserville
Featuring “Happy 75th Birthday, Jeep!”
This car show is the day after the Schellville event, meaning a double-header of fun in Sonoma
County! It’s hard to describe, so the best approach is to look at their interesting website at http://
brassinthegrass2015.com. This year among other things they are featuring a 75 Years of the Jeep display
and are hoping for 35 military jeeps! All other MVs are invited. If you have ever not wanted to bring your
MV to this show because of condition, rest assured all kinds of restorations (or not) are more than welcome. This is a charity event and a registration form on the website. Quite reasonable, and every
vehicle entrant gets a free Hagerty Insurance Breakfast. One of the many displays will include one from
the WWII War Brides Association. Those from out of the area considering attending the Pistons event at
Schellville and this one might look at camping Saturday night at the KOA in north Petaluma. At this point
you may contact John at in_garage@hotmail.com or 415-491-1601 for info you don’t get on their
website.

Newsletter for August 2015 MVCC
Hello to all from the East Bay,
Writing this newsletter has been my privilege for 10+ years about people, places and the Alameda Naval
Air Museum. I have made new friends and kept in touch with old friends as a member of the MVCC and
sadly, seen some pass on.
I want to congratulate our newly-elected board members and re-elected present board members. Good luck
in the coming years. We have the best people in the best club. The year 2016 will be exciting. The Spring
meet and the National Convention in Pleasanton, followed by the Fall meet will make it a busy year.
Anything that I can arrange at the museum in the city of Alameda, please let me know. The 4th of July parade was again a success. We had 7 vehicles: 3 WWII jeeps,
one towing a jeep trailer, one towing an 18-foot long A-7 jet fighter wing tank , a WWII command car, the
museum’s Dodge weapons carrier, a camouflage Blazer and last, being towed by another Blazer, was the
museum’s 25-foot lifeboat.
We had 25 people involved. Retired Marine Brad Price drove the command car, loaded with friends. Kevin Karvonen drove his jeep with the 30 cal and friends and hia wife Terry drove the military Blazer. John
Fornbacher and Fred Klink were dressed as Navy Seabees in a jeep. Wayne Shannon drove the museum’s
weapons carrier, which was donated to the museum before he passed away. My jeep towed the bomb trailer donated by Willy Denninger, carrying the wing tank. Sieg Wroebel drove last, towing the lifeboat.
Walking the entire 3.3 miles, Pit O’Malley, dressed in full combat Marine camos, carried a BAR, handing
out candy. After the parade, we adjourned to the Crow’s Nest at the museum for good old American standards: hot dogs, chili, potato salad, beer, soft drinks, etc.
Our WWI Exhibit is now complete. Lots of work was done by volunteers for an Eagle Scout project.
Come and see it when you can.
COMING EVENTS: For those who have never been to Oakland’s Dunsmuir House,
Sunday September 13, the Gatsby Summer picnic will be held. Dress in the era of the 1920s to the 1940s.
Civilian and military vehicles are welcome up to 1942. Contact Greg Greenwood at 510-527-7736 for details.
Saturday September 19, at the Veteran’s Hall in Hayward the Bay Area Military show will be held with
Military gear and collectibles for sale. Always a good show.
Contact Mark Hull at 415-531-0917 or Ed Anderson at 415-921-0667.
Saturday October 17, at the Alameda Naval Air Museum, will be the Bay Area Auto and Collectible Swap
meet. Any and all vintage items, military and civilian are welcomed. Contact myself (510-522-6440) or
Sieg Wroebel (510-523-0454
As I close, and for the last time to all our members “Thanks for the memories.”
That’s all for now. Over and out. The 40s. Larry

Hello to every one in the North Bay. Tower Park is
coming up fast and I am nowhere near ready. November
11th is the big Petaluma Veteran’s Day Parade. This
parade has always been one of the largest parades
around with the most MV’s also free food after
words. The July 4th Benicia Parade was the best one
around here as usual. The theme was WW-ll so we had
all the MB’s and GPW’s up front with war Veterans’
riding in them, all other MV’s were in the back. As a
group for the Benicia museum we got 1st place. I don’t
have anything for August but September 20 to 27 is
camp delta, Tower park. November 11 is Veterans’ Day
and there will be more parades so be prepared.
To answer some of your questions, I always get calls
two or three days before a parade or ceremony with
request for MV’s. So even thou most of them are out of
my area I send out a “ This Just in “ e-mail request to
about 100 people or so for help to cover the request,
that is why some of you get the e-mail. I do not have
my 41 WC 1 ready yet, maybe in November. I want to
thank every one who have brought me engines and
engine parts. I have a 1940s open cab WC 4 for sale if
any one is interested. See yaw all at Camp Delta.

WWII 70th Anniversary MV Display, 150th Annual Scottish Gathering & Games Sept. 5-6
Plus Fairgrounds Tour
By John Neuenburg
The largest annual Scottish festival outside of Scotland takes place at the Alameda County Fairgrounds every
Labor Day weekend. The Caledonian Club of San Francisco has been doing this for 150 years! It encompasses everything Scottish, plus some Irish, English, and Welsh too. This is one of the major annual events at
ACF - over 30,000 visitors.
We have been invited to do a small MV display commemorating the 70th anniversary of the end of the war,
probably at the west side of the grandstands. As of this writing the vehicles have been chosen so this is not an
invitation for more. But if you want to attend the show AND are curious about what is planned for our 2016
MVPA convention, we will lead a tour of the area we will be using. This requires buying an admission ticket
so this is only for people who are interested in the Scottish event. Another walk-around will be planned this
Fall for committee heads and members.
If you go, take a look at the Living History Area southwest of the grandstands. This is where we occasionally
have MV displays and we have even had camping rights in military tents for our participants. This is not
planned this year but if we schedule something like that in the future, this will be your opportunity preinspect the area and the event itself to decide if you want to participate at that time.

Fall Tower Park seminar
Hello Fellow MVCCers.
Ernie and I (Mike Rinehart) will be talking about Dodges at a seminar we are putting together for the
September (fall) swapmeet at Tower Park, and will include my experience with restorations.
I have just finished a 3.5 year, 3,000+ hour exhaustive frame off restoration of a Dodge WC40. I had a lot of
things go as planned, and a lot of things that did not. Which is par for a project of this magnitude. I do know
that a lot of the people in the hobby have budgets. And I feel that I experienced some things that need to be
passed on to save other hobbyist the grief I have experienced in this project.
Two things got me more in the wallet than needed were (1) bad or just wrong parts, and (2) big time venders
that charged a lot to rebuild things only to discover later some items or parts failed, exposing their horrible
workmanship. The later really cost me a lot in money and time. Looking back I feel this was something
totally unnecessary that could be avoided.
One part almost ruined a brand new engine and another could have burned up the entire truck, for example. I
also made some timing mistakes in purchasing parts that made it difficult to return some of the wrong parts
that were really for civilian trucks or in some cases I still do not know the correct vehicle the parts were for.
I hope to pass on the stories of my battle scars saving you from getting as many as I did on my project on
your own restoration projects.
Thank God I have an extremely understanding wife. So much so that we are picking up a couple Dodge 3/4
ton Command Cars a WC56 and WC57 this month. I guess we never learn, because here we go again! LOL
As always thanks for your time,
Mike Rinehart

After Action report
Built in 1942, Eagle Field graduated 5,000 Pilots (from 1942 to 1945) of which only half survived WW2.
One of the main hangers still stands today as does one of the main Buildings. So much history celebrated
once a year with the Annual Fly In Dinner and Dance... We strongly recommend attending this event. We
in the MVCC had a hand full of Military Vehicles there. There were about 30 vintage planes that attended!
Good Times for sure… Above and on Page 19 are pictures from the 2015 event thanks to John Verissimo.
