It’s just around the corner now. There are couple of things we all need to keep in mind regarding this meet. First and foremost, JoAnn and I have been receiving calls and emails from members confirming their reservations for April. This is a good thing and it’s better to confirm now than find out there’s a problem with your reservation when you arrive. For whatever reason there have been a larger than normal number of members that have issues with site deposits. We start looking at who has and who hasn’t gotten their deposits in on campsites. Merely having your name on a site is NOT a guarantee that you will be in that site in April. There must be a deposit associated with your name for the site to stay in your name. There is a considerable wait list of people who would like to get into the event and sites with no deposits on them are the first to go to them. We also do our best to make sure MVCCers get head of the list priority in filling those vacancies. It’s your responsibility to make sure your deposit for the following April is there. Keep your receipts! If you can’t find a copy of the receipt and paid it with a credit card bring a copy of the statement that shows your deposit so we have something to work with. We do our best to minimize problems before your arrival date. There are some other changes coming in September to the way we’ve done things at the KOA triggered by both KOA and the Club insurance policy. Since the beginning of our meets at Tower Park we have been able to offer the negotiated Club rate to all attendees. KOA and our insurance now require us to extend that discounted rate to MVCC, MVPA and affiliate club members only. Individuals that don’t belong to an MV organization will be required to either join the MVCC or an MVPA affiliate or pay the current KOA camping rates which for improved sites can be as high as $90. This is something to think about. With our membership rates at only $30 per year even a single night stay could save you money with a membership. We just held our Spring Board meeting and I’d like to report it was one of the most productive and successful meetings we’ve ever had. We completed some residual issues from the September meeting and finished off 90% of the issues we had on the Spring agenda. This will allow us to hold a much shorter meeting in April. From Bylaws to badges to billings we covered so many topics that needed attention. Some of the highlights I’d like to inform you of will again begin accepting Paypal for paying your dues and we are looking into taking credit/debit cards at the meets to pay your dues to simplify things. We will announce when the PayPal account is activated again in the Newsletter. Some of you might have noticed that the Newsletter has been taken down from the website. This is a temporary measure only until Sean and Dave finalize secure access to the online version. They’re working with our website host right now to get it back up ASAP. This will allow MVCC members to access the current Newsletter while non-members will only have access to past issues. We discussed presenting to the MVPA board for another convention in 2016 at the Pleasanton Fairgrounds and appointed Chairpersons for the convention to start that ball rolling. Most of the legwork has already been done. Site survey, convention hotel and rates, and committee definition are completed already. These are the initial phases with committee activity ramping up next year. It takes a good 2 years to put a successful convention together and the earlier we get started the better the overall convention will be. It’s not too early to thing about becoming part of the show. Areas where we will need help are traffic, security, displays, setup and takedown. We’re looking for 30-40 people willing to come work with us preparing for and during the convention. Please come join us! Keep ‘em Rolling! If not, its time to “crack the whip” and get things ready. Sometimes I am asked, if I can provide a military vehicle for static display purposes, for just a few hours and for a small group. Are there any South S.F. Bay Area members, who have a vehicle and time available? The Military Vehicle Technology Foundation (MVTF) located in Portola Valley, (which is North West of San Jose and South East of San Francisco) continually has tours available (by appointment only) to see the armored vehicle collection of the late Jacques Littlefield. See his article. The SF Bay Area has a wealth of World War Two history, especially around the Golden Gate area. Check out this website and plan a self-guided tour of the coastal defense batteries and forts. Take your MV! http://www.nps.gov/history/nr/travel/ wwIIbayarea/index.htm. The National Park Service is very proud that they have all important examples of coastal defense fortifications from the Civil War to the missile age available for visits. There is now a 16” gun at Battery Townsley at Ft. Cronkite. This is a former USS Missouri gun that the Park Service procured from storage in Nevada last year. It was in turret #3 during the Japanese surrender in Tokyo Bay! This Battery has open houses on the first Sunday of every month, 10:00-4:00. Also remember that the restored Nike missile battery SF-88 at Ft. Barry is open for visits Wed-Fri, 12:30-3:30 and the first Saturday of the month. It is at our ranch at the "end" of Walling Rd. in Geyserville. From 101 freeway north, take Canyon Road exit. If going south, take the exit 128 – Calistoga. Go west on Canyon to Walling Rd., take a right 2 miles to the end of the road sign and turn into the ranch by the big green shop building. Bring a sack lunch or MRE's to dine on at the picnic site on top of the mountain (no alcoholic beverages please), and enjoy some good times with fellow MVers and the beautiful countryside (rusty junk included), weather permitting. We are looking for more "exotic" vehicles to join in the fun (big trucks, tracked goodies, amphibs. to swim in the lake...). Let me know if you have a tractor-trailer rig you need to get your tank in with, and I'll find you a parking spot. Please bring the family, the vehicle, and have a great time. I can be reached at 707-857-3174. MVCC Going to MVPA Convention in Portland By John Neuenburg The Military Vehicle Preservation Association National Convention is coming to Portland, OR July 25-27, 2013. Are you going? Bringing a MV? You don’t have to have your MV in the judging to get secure indoor parking - most or all display-only vehicles will be indoors and there is no charge for that. We are going to gather MVCCers together for a group photo at the show, so if you are going, please pay attention to the July newsletter for the time and location. If you are not familiar with the MVPA or their Conventions, all details are now up on www.mvpa.org. Last month Mike Powter from the Oregon Central Coast Military Vehicle Group ran an article in our newsletter about working with and helping anyone convoying MVs to the show from the south. If you are putting something together, drop him a line at mikesmilitary@gmail.com. Camp Delta Activities April 14-21, 2013 By John Neuenburg The updated schedule for the BIGGEST annual MV swap meet in the West was published last month, is on the website, and if Dave has room this month it is elsewhere in this issue. If you have a USN or USMC vehicle or related display for the showcase Friday morning, contact either of the two POCs or just plan to bring it. Complete vehicles or restorations not required. Thanks in advance to Chuck Heindel from Surplus City Jeep Parts for sponsoring the cash awards for the People’s Choice contest. Also note that we will feature a MV display and discussion from the ALCAN Convoy March Unit 8 on Friday afternoon. All 2012 ALCAN participants and their photos are welcome. Leroy Cunha is POC, cbarbiecountry@aol.com or 510-793-6059. Halftrack nuts check out the discussion group and social on Saturday after the MVCC meeting. Speaking of the meeting, if you would like to serve the MVCC, how about running for a position on the Board? We have an election in May and are taking nominations and applications now through the Tower Park event. By the time you read this we should have an Election Committee chairman appointed to be your contact. Ask any officer about that. What do you want to do at this September’s Camp Delta? Contact me at 415-306-3607. As mentioned last month, get ready for ARMOR in April 2014! Visit our website: www.mvccnews.net 9 After Action Report Pigs; Pinot & More The Salinas Rotary Club sponsored a fund raiser (their 14th year) on Sept. 25th. This year’s theme was “We can do it”. It was a combination wine tasting (20 wineries) with 12 of the best chef’s from Monterey County serving some their best “Pig recipes”. It was held in the Old Salinas Armory, which is rich both in Salinas and Military history. It was there the National Guard Company C, 194th Tank Battalion was stationed before being deployed to the Philippines in 1941, where they were subsequently captured with many of them suffering in the Bataan death march. I was approached by one of the Rotary members to see if I could scare up some Military Vehicles to display both inside and outside for the event. I put out a call (via e-mail) to see who might be available for some free wine and food just for bringing their MV to the event. In true MVCC (wino) fashion, I had some takers. Those present with vehicles were, myself (LRDG Jeep inside); Marc Goldman (Jeep - inside); John Neuenburg (Jeep –outside – Indian Motorcycle - inside); George Escobedo (Paratrooper Bicycle – inside); and Damon Viola’s (Truck – outside). We received many complements from the attendees about our vehicles and uniforms. Even had our photos taken with a few of the “sweet young things” there; well they did have to be at least 21 to attend. It was a different and fun event with some great Monterey County wines and food; they played some old time music from 5 PM until 8 PM, that’s when we lost the younger crowed to loud dancing music. We stayed about another hour then headed for home. We removed our vehicles on Sunday morning and then headed to our perspective homes. I want to personally thank all those that attend with me. They quickly tired of this and opened up what was to be the largest machine shop in Detroit. Their first big customer was Ransom Olds for whom they built transmissions for in 1901. Quickly earning a reputation for high quality work, they caught the eye of Henry Ford in 1902 when he was building his first car. John and Horace built the chassis, engines, transmissions and axles. By 1910, the Dodge Brothers machine shop was the largest automotive shop in the world. By 1914, the Dodge Brothers were building a huge plant in Hamtramck, Michigan, after giving Ford notice of their intentions to leave Ford. On November 14,1914, the first Dodge car was built and for that time, the new all steel bodied 5 passenger touring car had many new innovations. In 1916, the “big three” started building commercial bodied trucks on car chassis. Many have read about a young Lieutenant by the name of George S. Patton used four Dodge touring cars to chase Poncho Villa back into Mexico. For those of us that collect and drive Dodge military vehicles, this was the start of many years of Dodge trucks being used by our armed services as tactical and non-tactical military vehicles. 2013 marks an end to the Dodge name on trucks as the name was removed from the VIN Plate at the end of 2012 production. The Dodge name was removed from the body and replaced with Ram in 2010. Chrysler now sells the Ram line of light and medium duty trucks, and Dodge is selling cars again. I have always had a soft spot for Dodge trucks, and I will continue to drive mine and proudly display the name that John and Horace Dodge applied to them. The Dodge Brothers sales slogan was “it speaks for itself .” Editor Visit our website: www.mvccnews.net 12 Dodge 3/4 ton WC-56 Command Car Canadian 1940 Ford, with a US Holmes wrecker Visit our website: www.mvccnews.net Editor Steffan Leegwater, Netherlands 13 CLASSIFIEDS NOTE: For Sale/Wanted are posted for three issues.
