Mohawk Valley Community College has undergone abundant
transformations during the 2015-16 academic year. We
launched more nanotechnology offerings, started to teach
Unmanned Aerial Systems courses, and brought online a new
business degree evening option. Our College’s new strategic
plan is seeing progress toward increased student completion,
advancement of diversity, and even closer connections between
MVCC and its community.
This magazine, MVCConnect, will give you more insights into
our academic offerings and as always provides the full range
of non-credit offerings the College provides. I hope you’ll take
the time to read through it and look for a class or program that

Camp
Small Unmanned Aerial Systems (sUAS)/Drones Camp (Ages 13-18)
The New York UAS Test Site at Griffiss International Airport, Air Force Research Lab
Information Directorate (AFRL/RI), and The Community Foundation of Herkimer and
Oneida Counties have partnered with MVCC, Griffiss Institute, and AX Enterprize, LLC to
offer an Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) Summer Camp. The experience will immerse
the students in UAS research at AFRL/RI, UAS testing at the Griffiss International Airport,
and UAS educational opportunities at MVCC.
This one-week camp will focus on UAS
concepts that combine classroom training
with hands-on experience. The classroom
instruction will focus on the safety of use
(FAA’s Know Before You Fly Initiative) and
scientific principles of flight. Students
will assemble a quadcopter and learn
the science of aerodynamics and radiocontrolled vehicles. The hands-on approach
contributes to students’ understanding
of concepts, promotes discovery, and
develops problem-solving skills. The
activities in this program are designed to
give students a competitive advantage
to entering aviation fields by giving
them a solid foundation of science,
mathematics, and communication skills,
and introducing them to cutting-edge
aircraft technologies. The camp will close
on Friday with a Capstone event where
the students will fly their drone through
an obstacle course. The camp has been
designed to excite students’ interest in
STEM, focusing on aviation and the highgrowth field of unmanned aerial systems,
and will introduce students to the local
employment opportunities in UAS and
aviation fields.

Option 1: July 18-22: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Monday through Thursday and 9am to
2 p.m. on Fridays
Option 2: August 8-12: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Cost: $100 Tuition includes the course
material and a small quadcopter that the
student can use for practice at camp
and after the course is completed.

place your child in an age-appropriate camp. Please
note that all students enrolling in BOTH morning and afternoon camps on the same
campus will be picked up from their morning camps, supervised during lunch, and
dropped off at their afternoon camps. Send in a bag lunch or money to purchase

FABLab is an advanced fabrication workshop where you can dream up, design, and make
items from practical to whimsical, using cutting-edge software and equipment. Bring in a
design idea or just see where inspiration takes you—then create it in our FABLab. Explore
the latest printing technology and take home a custom 3D object!

A Taste of Spanish

Gravity

Defy gravity when you build and take home
an air powered Hover Craft! Use your
creativity to control its direction. It can be
one crazy-looking vehicle! We provide the

more than one source of energy. In addition,
build an Egg Drop Car. In three challenges,

motion, energy, air pressure, friction, lift,
speed and acceleration.

techniques. Create something to wear that

Robotic Arm Science

Learn the science of robotics as you have
fun building, commanding, and taking home
your own five-motor arm! Command your
Robotic Arm’s gripper to open and close,
move your robotic wrist, elbow, base, and
command vertical and horizontal reaching
moves. Your robot is equipped with 100
grams of lifting capacity. For nighttime
adventures, the gripper is equipped with a
light. You will participate in robot Olympic
style challenges, robot battles, and more!

Fan of Star Wars you are? This summer
travel to a galaxy far far away. In Sci-fi
Camp, you will put the science in science
-fiction. Consider the orbits and gravitational
pull on Endor and Tatooine. Test the
aerodynamics of various ships and how
space battle might work. Create a simple
hovercraft, learn and play with holograms,
and much more! A true to size R2-D2 will
make an appearance and costumes are
welcome. Ages 10-14.

Get into literary character as you create your
own characters and write your own play.
Then make your play a reality by blocking
it and performing it as a reader’s theater.

Discover the language of computing!
Through un-plugged and plugged-in
lessons, you will learn about algorithms
and conditional statements, and use these

the MIT web portal of Scratch. You will
leave with a good foundation of the visual
block code languages in CODE.org and in
Scratch. Ages 8-10.
Week of Code - Advanced

Expand your computer language
knowledge! Through un-plugged and
plugged-in lessons, you will expand
your understanding of algorithms and
conditional statements, and then use
these new skills to create games and
stories in the MIT web portal of Scratch.
You will leave with a strong addition to

prerequisite levels or be able to master all previous level expectations before going to

All individuals operating a personal watercraft (jet ski), regardless of age, are required to
successfully complete a New York State approved Boater Safety Course. You must hold
a certificate if: 1) you operate a personal watercraft and are at least 14 years old, or 2)
you wish to operate a motorboat (other than a personal watercraft) and you are at least
10 years old and less than 18 years old. This course meets the state requirements for
operation of personal watercraft for all ages. It also covers boater safety topics such as
navigation, boating terminology, regulations, water safety, boater’s etiquette, and rules of
the water. The minimum age for this course is 10 years, and those 12 years and under
must be accompanied by an adult or sibling 16+. Students receive a New York State

Lead Renovator Certification
As of April 22, 2010, all home
improvement contractors, property
management firms, landlords, or others
compensated for renovations that disturb
more than 6 sq. ft. (interior) and 20 sq. ft.
(exterior) of paint or surface coating in pre1978 housing, schools, or child-occupied
facilities are required to obtain an EPA firm
license and have their workers trained in
lead-safe work practices. Renovations
firms must have at least one certified
renovator who has completed training
and obtain a firm certification from the
EPA at a cost of $300. MVCC is offering
these courses in partnership with the
Oneida County Health Department and
Environmental Education Associates (EEA)
and these courses are accredited by the
EPA and fulfill the requirements for lead

Basic RiderCourse (BRC)
The BRC consists of five hours of
interactive classroom learning and at least
10 hours of hands-on riding instruction.
This course provides the beginning
motorcyclist with the basic mental and
physical riding skills necessary to minimize
risk on the street. Learning is a fun,
step-by-step process in a secured lot on
our user-friendly training motorcycles.
Motorcycles and helmets are provided.
Successful participants will receive a
motorcycle road test waiver.
Basic RiderCourse 2 for
License Waiver (BRC2-LW):
The BRC2-LW is designed for individuals
18 years or older that already have some
street riding experience and have held a
valid New York State Motorcycle Permit
for at least one riding season. The course
consists of a three-hour online eCourse
and approximately five hours of practice
riding exercises on your own street-legal
motorcycle or scooter. The riding
exercises conclude with a skills evaluation.
Successful participants will receive a
motorcycle road test waiver.
Introductory Motorcycle
Experience (IME)
The Introductory Motorcycle Experience
(IME) is just two hours long and the class
size is small – just three participants! The
IME is a program to get familiar with the
primary controls of a motorcycle. You’ll
be given the opportunity to operate the
controls while astride the motorcycle as
you “power-walk” on our practice range.
The IME is a taste of riding without a big
investment of time or money. It’s a great
way to “jump start” your BRC learning
experience! The IME is also a great
way for potential riders to determine if
motorcycling is a good personal choice
and if they have the basic skills needed to
be prepared for the Basic RiderCourse.
Basic RiderCourse 2 for Skills
Practice (BRC)
The BRC2 is a half-day class for
experienced riders that already have their
motorcycle endorsement. The class is
“range-only” - no classroom. Using your
own motorcycle, you’ll practice techniques
for managing traction: stopping quickly,
cornering, swerving, and the use of
counterbalancing skills for slow, tight
turns. Improve your ride!
MSF RiderCoach Preparation
Course (RCPC)
Are you a “people person?” Do you love
motorcycling? Are you committed to riding

reimbursements for cancelled registrations will be made as follows.
•100 percent refund: withdraw three or more business days before class begins
• 50 percent refund: withdraw two days or less before class begins (for classes
costing less than $20, your refund is tuition minus a $10 fee)
• Consideration for withdrawal requests after the first class session must be
made in writing to the Center for Corporate and Community Education. CCED is

Big plans for
MVCC’s Rome Campus
in 2016
With the emerging industries in the region
and the expansion of existing companies,
Mohawk Valley Community College’s
Rome Campus is gearing up to be the hub
for workforce development. The College is
entering the final phase of a new expansion
and renovation of the Jack D. Plumley
Complex, located on Floyd Avenue.

The project is slated to cost approximately $28.6 million,
to better serve its more than 1,200 students from Western
Oneida County. It has been approved by MVCC’s Board of
Trustees, the Oneida County Board of Legislators, and the
executive branch of New York State government.
She added that these new facilities are a
demonstration of the College’s commitment
to develop Rome’s next generation of
engineers, scientists, technicians, and
inventors that will drive the region’s future.
The design created by JMZ Architects
will feature a new community conference
center, offering a new meeting option for
Rome-area organizations. Two new wings
will be added to the building, and existing
spaces will be renovated. The greatest
investments are in learning and academic
spaces like classrooms and the library.
Other areas of investment include advising
and student support spaces. Particular
design considerations have been improving
space for Rome’s anchor programs
including cybersecurity, hospitality, and
general studies; and creating room to grow
for up-and-coming programs like drones,
aviation, and emerging careers in science
and technology.
Outside the building on the grounds, there
will be improved parking and easier access
to the grounds. This work includes the
demolition of the current Academic Building,
which continues to fall into disrepair faster
than the College can correct the issues.
“Over the years, this campus has had an impact on not only Rome, but all of
Oneida County,” said Oneida County Executive Anthony Picente Jr., at the project
groundbreaking in June 2015. “In technology, food service, entertainment, UAS
(unmanned aerial systems), to the people who work down the road at DFAS and
Rome Labs. It is so crucial that we look to the future and not the past, for Oneida
County grow.”

Careers in Aviation
Lead Initiatives in Rome
Rome highlights include growth in MVCC’s popular aviation
maintenance program, which prepares students to enter
careers in the aircraft maintenance market.
A close partnership with local employer Premier Aviation has
led to the launch of the Atlas Air Academy, a supplement
to the aviation maintenance certificate that, for a fee,
guarantees students a job at Premier and pays them to
work part-time at Premier while in school at MVCC. Upon
graduation, Atlas Air Academy participants earn $1 an
hour more than non-Atlas employees, for a total wage
of up to $7,845 more than non-Atlas students over the
course of the program. Slots are limited and applicants

Aviation Maintenance is growing in other ways as well. The
program added two new Gulfstream aircraft in 2015, creating
new opportunities for students
to practice and learn on the
same kinds of planes they
will be working on after they
graduate from the program.

MVCC will also be bringing its aviation
expertise to the emerging field of small
unmanned aerial systems—drones—as
a member of the industry-leading NUAIR
consortium. Plans for Rome Campus drone
offerings will be announced in the coming
months.
A third initiative in Rome involves
major local employer Defense Finance
and Accounting Services (DFAS), the
Workforce Development Institute (WDI),
and MVCC. As DFAS seeks qualified
job applicants, MVCC and WDI will offer
no-cost, 24-hour classes on how to
successfully apply for a government job at
DFAS or other federal agencies. Students
will practice their interview skills, learn to
search federal job listings, and improve their
understanding of the federal job search,
application, and hiring processes.

The Rome Campus offers opportunities
to complete 17 degree and certificate
programs entirely on the Floyd Avenue
campus. Eight programs are unique
to the Rome Campus: Culinary Arts
Management, Food Service Administration,
Hotel and Resort Management, Chef
Training, Educational Sign Language
Interpretation, Surgical Technology,
Airframe and Powerplant Technology,
and Health Information Technology. The
College currently offers a shuttle bus
between both campuses to provide
increased accessibility to both Utica
and Rome populations.

Early
Childhood
Education
Aspiring teachers in Central New
York now can earn the New York
State Teacher Certification for
grades one through six at Mohawk
Valley Community College in a
partnership with SUNY Oneonta.
Starting in August 2016, MVCC again
will offer the Liberal Arts and Sciences:
Childhood Education, Grades 1-6,
jointly registered program with SUNY
Oneonta (associate in science/bachelor
in science). This unique program
provides area students the opportunity
to earn the New York State Teacher
Certification for grades one through six
by enrolling in the MVCC Associate in
Science Degree, which is comprised
of introductory education classes and
an array of general education courses.
Students who graduate with the associate
degree and earn a minimum grade point
average of 3.0 automatically are accepted
into SUNY Oneonta’s Bachelor of Science
portion of the program, where students will
have the opportunity to complete coursework
on the MVCC campus. Upon completion of
the bachelor’s level coursework, students
will have earned a degree in Liberal Arts:
Childhood Education, conferred by SUNY
Oneonta, and, assuming successful results
on certification examinations, will receive
teacher certification.
“Reinstatement of this important program underscores MVCC’s belief in
the promise of our prospective teachers who reside in Central New York,”
said Dan Ianno, Director of Admissions at MVCC. The College last offered
the jointly registered program with SUNY Oneonta in 2010.

Dual Credit
program gives high school
students jumpstart on college
Earning college credit for free while in
high school may sound too good to be
true, but it is a very accessible option
for local students, thanks to the Dual
Credit program offered by Mohawk Valley
Community College.
MVCC’s Dual Credit program, a partnership
with local high schools, is a unique way of
enhancing the typical high school experience
for motivated students, enabling them to
earn college credit for classes attended right
in their own high school. Students typically
enroll in 100- to 200-level college courses
taught by qualified high school teachers who
are approved MVCC adjunct instructors. The
courses, which range from Psychology and
English, to Intro to Electronics and Music
Appreciation, are identical to those offered
on the MVCC campus, except all schoolwork
is done in the high school setting during the
routine school day.
The program offers an alternative to advanced
placement courses, a manageable transition
to college-level coursework, and a potential
means of saving tuition dollars in the long run.
There is no travel, no book expense, and
no tuition cost.

desired degree-career path,
and rigorous courses leading
to realistic expectations,”
said Shane McGovern,
Director of MVCC’s Dual
Credit Program.
The program makes it possible for students to enter college as a second-semester
freshman — and sometimes as a sophomore — with a college transcript of credits they
earned while in high school. In one extraordinary case, two Holland Patent seniors taking
Dual Credit courses decided to double up on classes on their own time so they could
graduate from high school and MVCC in the same year.

walked across the Utica Memorial
Auditorium stage last May to receive their
diplomas at the College’s Commencement
ceremony more than a month before their
high school graduation.
“It was a lot of work,”
Gehrig said at the time.
“But now we have a lot of options.
There’s so much we can do.”
The program also can be utilized to get
high school students working beyond
developmental courses. In 2013, MVCC
math faculty worked with high school
math teachers to create the Math Initiative
Program, designed to help students
with math before they get to college.
In this program, students in need of
developmental math are identified in their
junior year of high school and given the
opportunity to take a preparatory college
math course in the fall of their senior
year. Upon successful completion of this
course, students then can take advantage
of Dual Credit math offerings in the spring.
In some cases, the Dual Credit program
can serve as a catalyst for students to
continue their college education.

“Our program often engages students
who may not be considering pursuing
an education beyond high school,”
McGovern said. “For many of these
students, participating in a Dual
Credit course opens their minds to the
possibility of higher academic pursuits.”
Since its inception in 2002, MVCC’s Dual
Credit program has awarded credit to
nearly 10,000 students from the Mohawk
Valley. Last year, the program enrolled more
than 2,200 students in 51 unique courses
from 14 disciplines. Currently, there are 24
participating K-12 regional school districts,
including two BOCES.
And while the program puts students on
track to complete the necessary coursework
for an associate degree in a career program
or certificate at MVCC, they will have an
official college transcript that can be sent
to whatever school they choose. Credits
earned from completed courses transfer
readily to all State University of New York
higher education institutions, as well as
many private colleges and universities in
New York State and beyond.
ARE YOU WISE?
MVCC working to close
gender gap in STEM
While the science, technology, engineering and math workforce continues
to be crucial to the United States’ global competitiveness, women —
despite making up nearly half of the U.S. workforce — remain vastly
underrepresented in STEM jobs and among STEM degree holders.
According to the U.S. Department of
Commerce, women fill close to half of
all jobs in the U.S. economy, but they
hold less than 25 percent of STEM jobs.
Women also hold a disproportionately low
share of STEM undergraduate degrees,
particularly in engineering. And many
women with STEM degrees are less likely
than their male counterparts to work in
a STEM occupation, working instead
in education or healthcare. There are
many possible factors contributing to this
discrepancy — including a lack of female
role models, gender stereotyping, and less
family-friendly flexibility in the STEM fields.
MVCC is doing its part to encourage and
support women in STEM. The college, with
its strong programs in science, technology,
engineering, and math, has a group of
faculty and students called WISE (Women
in Science and Engineering),

dedicated to educating and mentoring
women in pursuit of STEM-related fields. The
group works to raise awareness of the gender
gap and the unconscious bias against women
in STEM, as well as to provide a support
network. WISE strives to make connections
early — starting with local K-12 schools. The
group also seeks out successful women in
STEM fields to be role models.
For the past two years, WISE has hosted
a Girls in STEM Expo at MVCC’s Utica
campus, inviting local girls in grades 9-12
to the college for a day of exploration in
STEM. Melissa Barlett, Ph.D., chair of
the WISE group and Assistant Professor
of Life Sciences at MVCC, said the
event is designed raise awareness of the
educational opportunities for girls in STEM.
“One of the biggest issues is finding
good role models,” she said.
Engineer Ashley Waldron, a 2010
graduate of MVCC who now works at

adults understand their goals in a

Waldron’s work also has helped to help
empower other women in engineering. Last
year, she saw a news story about a woman
who was chastised for “not looking like
an engineer” in an advertisement, which
inspired a campaign to break stereotypes in
engineering that went viral with the hashtag
#ILookLikeAnEngineer. She took photos
of women holding signs stating what they
do for their jobs.

women pursuing STEM education and

“Contributing to this campaign was
very important to me,” she said.
Waldron says MVCC prepared her well for
her transfer to Clarkson University for her
bachelor’s degree.
“The transfer experience was absolutely
seamless,” she said. “All my credits
transferred, and I received a scholarship
to Clarkson as one of the top students in
the MVCC engineering class.”
