Survivor Scroll #992
W
hen one thinks of the
Holocaust and hears
the word survivor, it is a person
that most likely comes to mind.
However, people were not the
only survivors of this historic
tragedy: 1,564 Czech Torah
scrolls, which were collected
by the Nazis and placed on
extermination lists or earmarked
for housing in what Adolf Hitler
called “a museum to an extinct

these scrolls survive, they live on
as testaments to the failure of Hitler’s plan.
Thanks to a gallant effort by Westminster Synagogue
in London, these scrolls were saved, repaired, and given new
life and purpose by being sent to synagogues all over the
world (many of which could not afford to purchase their own
Torahs). Of those scrolls, 103 were sent to California. In 1984
Rabbi Alfred Wolf of Wilshire Boulevard Temple secured
Torah #992 on permanent loan.
For the first time ever and in commemoration of Yom
HaShoah, 18 of the Czech scrolls are on display together at the
Los Angeles Museum of the Holocaust (LAMOTH)—and ours
is among them. The exhibit features pictures of the institutions’
representative clergy holding the scrolls, as well as an audio guide
with recordings made by the clergy about their respective scrolls.

Torah Portion
Biblical Law’s First Change
Parashat Pinchas: Numbers 25:10-30:1
O
ne of the weaknesses of our tradition is that the
narrative of women is often absent from our Torah.
After all, men wrote the majority of our sacred texts as
reflections of their worldviews and experiences. Which
makes the story we find in Parashat Pinchas all the
more astonishing.
We read about five daughters, known as the daughters
of Zelophehad, whose father has died. They come forward
and stand before Moses, the high priests, and the entire
community and explain that their father has died and had
no sons. They beg that their father’s name not be lost
and that they be allowed to inherit his land. These five
women come forward without being called, to the place
where only the high-ranking men gather, and they speak
up for themselves and for what they believe in. And
what happens?
Moses takes their plea to God, and God immediately
responds by telling Moses to give these women a hereditary
holding among their father’s kinsmen, and that this shall be
the law from that point on. In other words, God instructs
Moses to change the law—to give the daughters the holding
that will enable them to bequeath their inheritance to
their own heirs. This is the very first change ever made to
biblical law.
Women gain the right to inheritance in this Torah
portion because the daughters of Zelophehad came forward
and spoke up. Even now, in this day and age, it’s often
easier to sit quietly in silence and accept the status quo,
whether it’s just or not. It’s much harder to stand up, to step
forward, to speak out. But as the daughters of Zelophehad
teach us, it is the only way to affect change.

n June 9, 2016, the Marcia Israel Chapel/Auditorium
at the Irmas Campus will provide the setting for the
graduation of Brawerman Elementary School’s Class of 2016.
Friends and families will celebrate Grade 6 students as they
reflect on their years together at Brawerman, sharing memories
of travel, tikkun olam projects, teachers, performances, sports,
holiday celebrations, friendships, and the annual school
themes…from Kehillah Kedoshah (our holy community—
Kindergarten) to Yad b’ Yad (hand in hand—Grade 2 ) to
Kavanah (intention—Grade 6). Those in attendance are

Camps
Renew Summertime Memories
C
amp memories last forever for those who attended
five years ago, 20 summers back, or even 50. Happily,
summertime provides many chances for alumni to return to
camp to reconnect and reminisce.
One such opportunity this summer takes place at Camp
Shabbat, which is open to alumni and friends of Camp on
Friday, July 8, and Friday, July 29, at both Camp Hess Kramer
and Gindling Hilltop Camp. If you have a child in session at
that time, please join us at Camp Shabbat on the alternate date.
Mitzvah Night, for alumni of the program, is scheduled
for Saturday, July 9 at Gindling Hilltop Camp. On August 2,
we host our annual Leadership Reunion Dinner at Camp
Hess Kramer, this year for alumni from L’61, ’66, ’71, ’76,
’81, ’86, ’91, ’96, 2001, and 2006. At 7:30 p.m. immediately
following the dinner, Leadership Night—open to ALL Camp
alums—begins.

Adult Opportunities
The Bible from Another Perspective
T
here is a famous story about Isidore Rabi, winner of the
Nobel Prize for physics in 1944, who was once asked
why he became a scientist. He replied: “My mother made
me a scientist without ever knowing it. Every other child in
Brooklyn would come home from school and his mother
would ask, ‘What did you learn today?’ My mother used to say,
‘Izzy, did you ask a good question today?’ ”
Judaism is a religion of questions. It is the basis of our
Talmud, our commentaries, and even our midrashim. When
we study Torah, we never take anything at face value; rather,
we look beyond the words to search for deeper meanings and
interpretations that evolve and change with every generation.
Our great sage Maimonides taught that much of the Torah is
actually metaphor, and that to take the text literally is to not
truly understand it.
Though Christian scholars take a lot more of the Biblical
text literally and as unchangeable, they also search the Torah,
which they call “Scripture” and the “Old Testament” for deeper
meanings. What is fascinating is that their interpretations are
usually completely different from ours. For example, while we
might view the Binding of Isaac as a test of faith for Abraham, they
see it as a prediction of the crucifixion of Jesus. While we interpret
the Song of Songs as a love story between God and the people of
Israel, they interpret it as love between Jesus and the Church.
They say if you truly want to know a person, you have to
walk in his shoes. Well, we are going to get to know our sister
congregation, Faithful Central Bible Church, by “walking” in
one anothers’ Bibles in a series of joint study sessions. These
will consist of 25 members from each congregation and take
place on Saturday afternoons in June, as well as one afternoon
in July, alternating locations. The final class will include a
celebration party for all the participants.
In tandem with some of our rabbis, their dynamic,
charismatic Bishop Kenneth Ulmer will teach different topics
from the Book of Genesis and Exodus. If you would like to
participate, we are asking those interested to commit to at least
two of the five classes. This unique experience is going to be
profound, inspiring, fascinating, and fun!

The Annual Congregational Meeting of Wilshire
Boulevard Temple takes place on Friday evening, June 17,
2016, at 6:00 p.m. in the Marcia Israel Chapel/Auditorium on
the Irmas Campus. All are encouraged to attend.
As part of its governance work, the Temple’s Board
of Trustees and its legal counsel have revised the Articles

Online Payment Saves Money and Time
We are excited to announce that your contributions to
Wilshire Boulevard Temple will now go a little further and
you will save time making them. Our new online payment
functionality enables you to pay your annual contributions,
as well as other donations or payments, online. In addition to
convenience, the online payment process also allows for direct
debit/E-Check, which represents a potentially substantial cost
savings to both the Temple and its congregants.
Each time you log in as a member at wbtla.org, you
save yourself time because required information populates
automatically on forms, your updated personal account activity
is displayed, and payments are credited directly to accounts. Also,
when you pay with a direct debit/E-Check (ACH) instead of
a credit card, the transaction costs the Temple just a flat $0.80
instead of an average 2.5 percent of your payment.
All members have access to secure features on the website
