Thoughts of October in August. Has the summer heat made you
begin dreaming of the cooler autumn weather? Are you tired of
feeling like you’ve run through a lawn sprinkler just from stepping outside? Well there are other reasons to look forward to
October besides relief from the humidity. Two of the biggest
events for IFMA members are scheduled for October, and now
is the time to make the commitment to be a part of them.
First up is World Workplace which takes place October 8 – 10,
in San Diego, California. If you have never attended World
Workplace you are missing out on a wonderful professional

opportunity. The educational sessions offer a wide array of topics,
which cover the spectrum of the FM world. If you are a member of an IFMA Council, it
enables you to meet with others from your specific field or industry to talk about best
practices and discuss ideas. WWP also provides lots more in the way of networking
opportunities not only with your fellow Atlantans, but on a national and international
level. Furthermore the vendor exhibition provides FM professionals with ideas on new
products and services, as well as numerous contacts to assist you.
If that was all there is to World Workplace, it would be well worth the money, but wait . .
. that’s not all, if you act now we’ll include the Ginzu knife for free. Okay maybe not the
Ginzu knife, but what is included with WWP is a really enjoyable time exploring the city
with your fellow Atlantans. No it’s not like a field trip in junior high with a sack lunch
and frozen Coke, it’s a lot more fun than that and you don’t have to ride on a smelly bus.
Last year in Philly our chapter had close to fifty members there, and it allowed me the
opportunity to get to know a number of folks a lot better. Okay I’ll confess that part of
that time was spent almost getting crushed on the dance floor of an Irish bar while an
oldies band was cranking out the hits, but I think you really get to know people when
you’re under duress like that. My point is that for members of IFMA Atlanta, World
Workplace is a group event so it’s a great time to meet other members.
The second event to mention for October is the Fall Classic, which will be held at the
Pine Isle Resort on Lake Lanier. This annual fund raising event on October 19 is a day of
golf and tennis, as well as the increasingly popular wine cruise, capped off with a poolside dinner and awards ceremony. Steve Christopher with Royal Cup is once again
organizing this event and is very excited about the opportunity to have the event at Pine
Isle. For golfers this is a great chance to get out on a championship course for the day.
Please be sure to sign up early for this event.
I look forward to seeing a large IFMA crowd at both World Workplace and the Fall
Classic. Till then, stay cool.

Jeff Jellets is the territorial disaster coordinator for The Salvation Army's
Southern Region. This is an area that covers (15) Southeastern States
and the District of Columbia. Mr. Jellets began his association with the
Salvation Army in 1995 as the state of Georgia disaster response director
and managed rebuilding operations in the wake of the 1994 Southwest
Georgia floods, the 1998 Gainesville tornados, the 1998 Dunwoody tornados, and the Olympic Park and Abortion Clinic bombings. In 2001 he
became the Salvation Army's territorial disaster coordinator serving most
notably at the World Trade Center during 9-11 and coordinating disaster
relief efforts in Florida for four 2004 hurricanes. He previously was with
GEMA, FEMA, and the American Red Cross.
Data from Hurricane Katrina shows that disaster survivors who prepared, fared far better than those who did not both from a survival standpoint and a recovery perspective. The Salvation Army has many of its'
facilities affected by natural disasters--some of which have dependent
populations. He would like to share a few lessons learned. Based on his
experiences, he is also helping facility and programs staff develop emergency plans and better systems for protecting those in a building during
a disaster event.

BRANAN TOWERS GRAND OPENING
Volunteer Appreciation Day at Branan Towers was a terrific time to
see the brand new lobbies recently completed --all 10 of them!!!
Many months ago, Joanne Cole and the IFMA Community Service
members rallied together to provide wall coverings, paint, new furniture and accessories for the reception/lobby area on each floor at
Branan Towers. Now, each time the elevator doors open, a smartly
decorated, comfortable reception area greets residents and guests.
What a great change!!

COMMUNITY CORNER
The Frazer Center - IFMA Community Partner
The Frazer Center is a nonprofit agency with a long-standing history
of providing exceptional, quality services to infants, preschoolers
and adults with physical and mental disabilities such as cerebral
palsy, spina bifida, Down Syndrome and other genetic anomalies
and global developmental delays. During the course of its fifty-five
year history, the Center has assisted children, adults and their families with therapeutic, educational and vocational services that maximize the potential for independence.
In 1996, The Frazer Center became the first non-profit supported by
the IFMA Atlanta membership. The professional association of
facility managers and vendors worked to upgrade the facility providing a new roof at cost, consulting on space planning, etc. They
also purchased a new Club Car to transport clients with disabilities
throughout the property and garden. This initial partnership was
short duration with very clear and distinct goals to be accomplished.
In 2003, the relationship with IFMA-Atlanta was re-established
when multiple non-profits were selected for the long-term support
and membership assistance. Since then, IFMA has provided after
construction consultation on roofing and HVAC systems. A 2004
IFMA Volunteer Day resulted in clean up of our therapy garden for
our adults and cleaning up a very old playground. Volunteers
repaired fences, washed equipment, donated and planted flowers
and added a vegetable garden to the children’s space. Acoustic tiles
have been created and installed in two areas. Electrical and HVAC
systems were relocated in the gardens. Consultation on safety needs
like sidewalks around the building, lighting in the gardens, and
building structural soundness after a truck hit our building are all
part of what IFMA is doing for us now. Most recently, an IFMA
member has joined our Board of Directors. This addition brings
even more credibility to our organization as we seek operational and
capital funding.
The Frazer Center is located in Druid Hills on the original estate of
Cator Woolford, co-founder of Retail Credit Company, now
Equifax. He began building his home on the property in 1916, and
his mansion was the home of The Cerebral Palsy School Clinic
from 1949 to 1959. In 1959 a school building was built on the rear
of the property, which The Frazer Center now inhabits. The beautiful property offers a serene setting for a multi-faceted program.
The grounds include Cator Woolford Gardens, sometimes referred
to as the “Secret Gardens.” The Gardens are a popular site for photo
shoots and the occasional movie or television filming, and are rented to the general public for wedding ceremonies and receptions,
retreats, luncheons, dinners and various corporate functions. They
are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Revenue generated from Garden rentals directly benefits services provided by
The Frazer Center.
