Engaging students in the topic
“Understanding Rhetoric” CRC
Communications Professor Dr.
Colette Harris-Mathews was the
featured public lecturer at the
University of Kigali, Rwanda. More
than 200 students attended the
lecture. Based on the lecture, students
posed questions regarding President
Obama, the use of the N-word in the
U.S., religious tolerance and exam
formats in the U.S.
J-Students Honored with Several Awards
Congratulations to CRC journalism students who were honored
with several awards at the Journalism Association of Community
Colleges NorCal Conference held at Sacramento State November
8. The Connection staff was honored with a General Excellence
Award for their website www.thecrcconnection.com. This award
means a lot to our students because it honors their work as a team.
Individual students were also honored with the following awards:

Chamber Singers Perform at Choral Festival at CSU Fresno
Last month (October 23-24,
2014), the CRC Chamber
Singers, together with their
conductor Kathryn Smith,
accompanist Narmina
Sultanova, and guest cellist
(student) Kodi Media,
traveled to Fresno, where they
performed for the California
State University Fresno
Community College Choral
Festival. They were joined
by several other community
college choirs from the central
valley, with a special premier
performed by Dr. Anna
Hamre and the CSUF Choirs.
Chamber Singers received
adjudication from world
renowned choral artist Dr. Rodney Eichenberger, recently retired John Carter, and local distinguished choral director Jim Foxx.
They stayed overnight in Fresno and returned on Friday, via California State University Stanislaus. While on campus at CSUStanislaus, they sang in clinic with Dr. Daniel Afonso, Director of Choral Activities. This was a one-in-a-lifetime opportunity for
our singers. They shared their music with a packed house on Thursday evening, and enjoyed the wonderful musical experience on
Friday with Dr. Afonso. The trip also provided an excellent opportunity to visit two CSU campuses and to work directly with the
choral leaders at those schools. The Chamber Singers choral exchange was partially funded by the CRC Foundation, and partially
funded by the CVPA area. Thanks to both of these organizations for their support of choral music.

The Season of Giving
LRPD announces community philanthropy efforts
Please join the Los Rios Police Department in giving back to the community
this holiday season.
They have teamed up with the Sacramento Food Bank & Family
Services to present “The Spirit of Giving Drive.” Now through January
31st, help families in need by donating nonperishable food and new or
gently-used clothing. LRPD is also joining the Salvation Army in the
Angel Tree Program. Starting November 14th, come pick up a gift tag
from the Angel Trees located on the first floor of the Library building.
Please return your unwrapped present with the tag to the College Police
Office by December 10th.
Together, as a community, we can play a key role in helping families
during the holiday season and well into the new year. For more

out Dozens of Students

Department sponsored self
defense demonstrations as
part of domestic violence
awareness. Dozens of CRC
students participated in the
informational session.
A Conversation with the Chancellor
Approximately 40 faculty, staff and students attended
the Brown Bag with Brian conversation last week. The
chancellor briefly talked about the process for finding a
new college president and then took questions
regarding a range of topics from productivity to
fatigue.
