Every once in a great while a bit of wisdom crosses your path and garners your attention. The depth of that wisdom is rendered even more profound when you realize it was accumulated over a long and deeply spiritual life by someone you knew. Dr. Ellsworth Kalas retired recently from Asbury Seminary, my own alma mater, with far too many distinctions, honors and achievements to enumerate in a few words. While I hold a deep respect for all of these accomplishments, what has most impressed me over the years was the man. His spirit remains warm, kind and generous. His faith, strong and thoughtful and yet so imminently practical and wise. On the occasion of his retirement he distilled in a few words some of his greatest life lessons. I trust his godly wisdom will speak to you as it has to me. The main answer is that I have been chasing grants an enterprise that is in many ways is like chasing rabbits, or finding false teeth on a chicken. However, three applications have been made, we are awaiting a third Request for Proposal, and with this potential funding we will be healthy again soon. Things are beginning to look a bit more promising as local organizations appear to be making a move to help. Their generosity is appreciated. Doug Ashey Building Materials has donated 51 gallons of both interior and exterior latex paint to us and we are thankful. This should be enough paint to complete a couple of houses when we get them to that juncture. So, if you are in Doug Ashey’s on Old Spanish Trail, tell them how much you appreciate their help, will you? An object for prayer is next. I received a call from a carpentry instructor at our local campus of the Louisiana Technical College saying that our project on Robertson Street would provide a perfect “classroom” for his students. Working on renovation of existing buildings is exactly what he has been looking for. I will be meeting with him on Monday, August 3rd to discuss our plan of action since we need next to convince the “powers that be” at the college to allow off campus activities. It is quite possible we will need to provide some sort of insurance policy to cover them. However, if we can get the majority of the labor provided, just think what a boon that would be! We will still need to provide building materials, permit costs, etc. This brings me to my next prayer request. Rebuild Iberia needs funding badly. We have enough to stay afloat until sometime late October, especially since administrative costs have been cut to the bare bone. Please pray that our applications for these grants are approved. There are ways you can help as well. Make a donation to us if you can, and once we get cracking on the carpentry be ready to help us paint the walls inside and out. Scott and I have been talking about a Rebuild Iberia Sunday where a second offering will be taken, so be in prayer about that as well. All the good intentions in the world go nowhere without adequate funding. So, when the plate comes around a second time, please be generous. Robertson Street needs you!
