The History of Cochise College
Cochise College was one of
the first community colleges
in Arizona, opening its
doors in 1964. Cochise
County citizens voted to
create a community college
district in 1961, and in 1962
a bond election passed to
fund the construction of the
Douglas Campus.
Cochise College is comprised of two campuses
(Douglas and Sierra Vista)
and three centers (Benson,
Nogales and Willcox) - all
located in this land rich in
history, cultural diversity and
natural beauty.
Cochise College's mission is
"to provide accessible educational opportunities that are
responsive to a diverse population and lead to constructive

Ramon Garcia visited Cochise College on September 12th to discuss Voting, Elections, and to answer many
student questions. During his visit he
registered 17 students to vote in the
November Mid-Term Elections, gave
out 30 voter registration forms on student request, and gave out close to 50
mail-in requests for absentee ballots.
On September 26th, Christine Rhodes, Cochise County Recorder, did a
follow-up visit to Ramon’s. Her in formation was invaluable! She registered
10 more students to vote. An interesting fact that Christine brought to light is
that the United States Justice Department is monitoring Cochise County voting because we do not have enough Hispanic voters
registered in the county. Please help in getting our communities involved in choice making!
Join the U of A Tour!!!
On October 13th, AvanZando and
the SGA will sponsor a field trip to
Tucson to tour the UofA. Ms. Elsa
Reyes from the UofA in Tucson has
Tucson Meet Yourself is a festival that
celebrates the diverse cultural traditions,
and can be considered a tradition unto
itself - a hands-on lab for students to
experience academic knowledge combined with culture. James "Big Jim"
Griffith, the renowned UA folklorist,
started TMY 32 years ago. It is the only
comprehensive folklife festival in Arizona
to date.

throughout the
celebration are
cultural
performances,
arranged a private tour just for CC
students. We will meet with UofA
counselors, financial aid representatives, and have a 1 1/2 hour walking
tour of the campus. This opportunity
will let students have a better idea of
what choices are available at the
UofA. It is important to begin to
look at where and how to transfer to
4 year post-secondary colleges and
universities now so that you’ll have a
smooth transition later!

Amber N. Ybarra is an exceptional Cochise College Student
who is involved in almost every student aspect of the Douglas
Campus! She never fails to provide help to staff, faculty and
other students. Amber has belonged to the AvanZando program
for 2 years and is an asset to the program.
Upon completion of her General Studies degree at Cochise
College, Amber plans to transfer a 4 year post-secondary university to pursue a baccalaureate degree in secondary education.
Amber’s mother, Ana Ybarra was interviewed by Rhonda Lane.
According to Ana, Amber was born and raised in Scottsdale, AZ,
where her mother still lives. She is the youngest child of three
older brothers.
Her decision to move to Douglas, AZ, came through her desire to get out of the city and experience other lifestyles than that
she was raised in. Her grandfather was living alone in Douglas,
and Amber grabbed the opportunity to accomplish many things:
She wanted to help her grandfather and get to know him better,
she wanted to live in a heavily Spanish speaking area so that she
could perfect her Spanish and be close to her heritage, and she
wanted to begin her studies at Cochise College gaining the advantage that this exceptional community college offers all students.
Being a person who looks for opportunities through maximizing options, Amber chose to participate in the AvanZando Program - We are thankful that she did!!

Avan Zando’s FIRST STUDENTS OF THE MONTH!
Mercedez Jasmin Zertuche is active in many programs and
clubs at school, available to help other students, assists staff and
faculty, and participates in every event that she is asked to help
with.
Jasmin enrolled at Cochise College because she saw the opportunity to excel, expand her academic knowledge, and to experience
the cultural growth and awareness that CC Offers, according to
her mother who was interviewed by Daniel O’Meara. Jasmin realized a better world through education was available right here at
CC and she jumped at the chance to begin her adult career/life
right at home. Born and raised in Mexico, she graduated from
Douglas High School, and works in the One-Stop because she
realizes the value of help to new students just starting college.
When Jasmin started school in the US she knew very little English.
She is now fluent in English. For that reason, Jasmin plans to
transfer to Kenyon College, Gambier, Ohio, a college that was
chosen as one of the "New Ivies" by The 2007 Kaplan/Newsweek
'How to Get Into College Guide'. Jasmin plans to pursue BA and possible MA degrees in Translation. This is not an easy subject of study,
because professional translators are required to have top skills in
writing, reading and speaking every language that they work with.
AvanZando is proud to include Jasmin in their exceptional program - She is one of the reason that this program is becoming a
national exemplary program among TRiO SSS Program!!

The current exhibition in the art
gallery on the Douglas campus is
the 3rd Annual Cross-Border Exhibit.
This traveling exhibit features
high school students from both
sides of the border exhibiting their
pencil drawings.
They represent schools from
Bisbee, Douglas and Elfrida, Arizona, to Agua Prieta, Cananea, and
Naco, Sonora.

The history of human technology begins with the discovery of how to give stone a
sharp edge to making a wheel
from stone. In 1801, JosephMarie Jacquard invents a loom
which uses punched cards to
control the pattern of the fabric. This loom - created over
200 years ago - is the predecessor of the punch-card com-

Education” that was held by
CC Science Club last April,

Are UFOs REAL? World Famous Stanton Friedman Can Prove they ARE!!!
Stanton T. Friedman is a
Nuclear Physicist and Astronomer who has been instrumental in the quest to
understand UFOs. He has
been actively involved in
what is considered one of the
most important investigations on the UFO phenomenon ever assembled on film.
Stanton’s investigations
document solid physical
evidence of UFO landings,
photos and videotaped evidence of UFOs from around
the world. It also reveals the
shocking story of the government’s “Cosmic Watergate” - a massive effort to
keep UFO information from
the public.
Stanton T. Friedman
shares details of a massive
investigation that utilized
the U.S. Court System in conjunction with the “Freedom of
Information Act” to gain access to government and military documents, which by law
should already be available to
the public.
Mr. Friedman interviewed

Career Technical Educational Program Services (CTEPS)
CTEPS serves both campuses and work with Cochise
College centers as well.
The program provides support services for Career Technical Educational (CTE) students, including fuel assistance,
academic advising, scholarship
referral, and a limited textbook
library loan program.
They also provide workshops and assist students in
overcoming obstacles that interfere with their education.

The Douglas CTEPS Office
organized the Teen Maze in
cooperation with Career Services, Recruitment, and other
Cochise College Departments;
teamed with the Cochise
County Health Department,
criminal justice departments
and EMS groups from the
area.The projects was a great
success with over 200 students
attending the Benson Teen
Maze and close to 200 attending the one on the Douglas
Campus.

The Cochise College Library provides invaluable information and
support to all of us here!
The library catalogs and
checks-out AvanZando textbooks and laptop computers.
They help us keep track of who
has borrowed what, when supplies are due back, and who has
not returned books and computers. This is just a portion of
what they do for our program.
There is nothing that you cannot find (or that our library will
not work to find) for any student
here!
They will try to order books
and supplies that will help students with resource information.
They provide online databases
and links to a wealth of information for researching or for reading pleasure. They provide CDs
and DVDs for the same purposes.
The IMS department is the
department that keeps classroom
computers operational, create
videos for special programs and
school meetings, and stage
graduations and other spectacular
event. They also set up technical
equipment for classrooms, meetings, guest speakers, graduation,
etc., etc.
Any group of students and/or
faculty and staff are welcome to
schedule an orientation through
the library where the group is
given information about everything that is offered through the
library and IMS programs.
They instruct students and staff
in researching, referencing and
use of all types of media for
learning.
Barnes and Noble Bookstore
Lisa Vargas is the manager
of the Barnes and Noble
Bookstore at Douglas Campus.
Lisa works hard to keep
supplies, books, and food in
the store that appeals to the
general student population.
If anyone would like to see
other items available, just talk
with Lisa and she will try to get
them in the store for you!
Bookstore personnel work
hard year round to make sure
that student needs are met.
Be sure to stop in and meet
the employees there! They are
here to help students with
many needs - you only have to
ask!!
Chartwell’s Food Services
Chartwell’s provides all food services to the Douglas Campus.
Lisa Lopez is on top of every
need, offering hot meals and a
large variety of foods available for
breakfast, lunch and dinner.
They also arrange catering for
special events such as receptions,
graduation, public forums, etc.
Clubs and campus groups just
need to let Lisa know what they
need and she will get it done!

the entire college year round!
CC Print Media is the one-stop
shop for stationery, envelopes,
notepads, and college forms. We
are able to order online and the
media is to us within days, if not
hours!
They also print/copy a variety of
brochures/flyers, college publications, handouts, and information
packets. This department serves as
the college mail service as well.
Remember that we are here for YOU, whether you need advice, help, a cheerleader, a listener, or a friend!

According to Diana Dominguez, the Dean of Douglas Campus maintains an open door
policy to students, faculty and staff! They are available to answer questions, give help,
find rooms for classes, and to make sure that classrooms are equipped and ready to use.
The department is active in community needs both in Douglas and in Bisbee. The NUMBER ONE PRIORITY OF THIS OFFICE IS TO SERVE THE STUDENTS OF
COCHISE COLLEGE!
AvanZando Goes to New York!

Opportunity in Education (COE) the
first of September. The COE represents TRiO programs nationwide.
They met many great people who
work with students from all over the
U.S.

speaker at the dinner - he is a TRiO
success story!!
