Moore is on his way to a f ifth consecutive year in which he will spend more time on the road than at home. Travel is often physically and mentally e xhausting, so fatigue is typical this time of year for country artists, who tour heavily during the toasty summer months when fairs, festivals and a mphitheaters keep them playing sweat-filled shows. MOORE Other parts of the business experience their own cycles during the dog days of summer, and they’re usually related to the artists’ schedules. Booking agents and radio stations, for example, are working at peak activity levels, while songwriters slow down. For the journalists who cover the business, late July and August can b ecome a d ifficult period. Plenty of executives take time off or go out of town to see their artists, and the remaining staff is naturally slower to respond. Thus, the dog days of summer have an impact even on the people who make THE CADILLAC THREE their l iving covering those acts. “From a news perspective, the road is usually noneventful,” says CMT.com managing editor Calvin Gilbert. “Not to say that everybody working in the country music industry checks out by July, but after the CMA Music Festival [in June], a lot of people use the opportunity to recharge by t aking vacations. It’s a time for them to sort of catch their breath.” Not so for most artists. For them, it’s time to go into overdrive. The advent of county fairs and music festivals creates a demand that n ecessarily means busy bus schedules and more frequent-flier m ileage. Travel is physically taxing, the heat takes an understandable toll, and the temporary nature of the business — where every venue and city has its own peculiarities — creates a lot of challenging uncertainties. Artists, of course, know what they signed up for. But they’re still tested by the unexpected hurdles that go with the job. The Cadillac Three’s Jaren J ohnston, who spent 13 years traveling in a van b efore the band graduated to a bus in 2013, found that the cliché phrase “emotional rollercoaster” was practically invented for touring. “There’s days when you’re in the van, and the air goes out, and you’re in Texas [heat], and you’re going, ‘What the hell am I doing this for?’ ” he says. “Then you play a show, and you’re like, ‘Ah, son, I get it.’ ” Artists’ summer touring schedules create some wonky d ynamics as they overlap with their associates. Record labels, for example, have some employees away on vacations, while those who remain on the job take on additional d uties. By the end of the summer, many are occupied with extra meetings and phone conferences planning for the always-intense fourth quarter. Songwriters, who are increasingly motivated by economics to write with artists, book fewer sessions during the summer — or head out to write on the bus with the acts. Songwriter Josh Osborne (“Take Your Time,” “John C ougar, John Deere, John 3:16”) sees writing sessions get canceled more often as the temperature rises and pretty much expects a slowdown in the four weeks prior to Labor Day. “I don’t know if it’s the heat or what,” he says. “But I notice it in my own life. I feel like I’m in a malaise, and I think it’s summer in general. Once kids are back in school and all that kind of stuff, I think everybody kind of snaps back in line a little bit. But I think everybody gets kind of lazy over the summer.” Not quite everybody. Radio stations, still considered country’s best m edium for exposure, enter high gear. P romotions for their advertisers tend to peak during the s unniest season, and stations use o utdoor events — i ncluding the same fairs and festivals that book countr y BALLARD a rtists — to burnish their image in the local m arket. Among their most difficult tasks is deciding when to put a cap on the activities. “I can recall one war story in that area when we would have to staff the Utah State Fair booth from open to close for the entire 10-day run,” says Spotify global head of country music programming John Marks, who was a PD in six different markets, including KKAT Salt Lake City, before he moved to national platforms. “That was a point of burnout and certainly a point of ‘Hey, why are we doing this for this entire time and d evoting all this energy and effort?’ As I recall, we started tailoring that down.” Also at peak levels are the booking agencies, who often have to put out lastminute fires at their artists’ current shows at the same time they’re t rying to book a year in advance with promoters who are itching to announce 2017 headliners at the close of their 2016 festivals. “You’re thinking in two years at the same time almost,” says William Morris Endeavor line agent Becky Gardenhire. The promoters have the same issues — working out last-minute snafus at the same time they’re trying to get commitments a year in advance — and the push and pull between the acts and promoters in high-pressure circumstances creates a certain amount of tension at the end of summer. “There are a lot of short tempers out there in the industry,” she says with a laugh. “You try to work through that as much as you can. That’s not a nyone’s fault. It’s part of the stress of this industry.” The artists — who live out the dog days on the front lines — are generally able to adapt. Moore, despite being whipped, was a veritable cheerleader at the Aug. 10 outdoors concert. Frankie Ballard, whose current schedule is loaded with open-air p erformances, shrugs off the heat — and the fatigue that goes with it — as part of the gig. “We would probably always prefer to play inside,” he says. “But people love going outside and seeing shows and being part of a bigger thing. As long as that’s true, we’re going to be doing shows in the summertime one after a nother. It’s just the way it is.” Meanwhile, The Cadillac Three — whose heavy tour schedule has taken them to eight foreign countries in 2016 even as they finished their just- released album, Bury Me in My Boots — is already using the Christmas break as motivation to keep performing at the highest level possible. “Saturday night after the show,” recounts Johnston, “we came off stage and we were all wringing wet. It was 110 degrees, playing outside, and we all sat down and poured a shot and a cold beer. And I go, ‘Boys, it’s August. There’s light at the end of the tunnel.’ ” AUGUST 15, 2016 | PAGE 2 OF 21 LoCash greeted decision-makers from several Minnesota radio stations when it played We Fest in Detroit Lakes, Minn. It’s buoyed by a 3 percent increase on Country Airplay, where it bumps 12-11 with 25.8 million in audience. Shelton’s If I’m Honest, his 10th studio album, reclaims the No. 1 spot on Top Country Albums due to a 99-cent sale tag in the Google Play music store. It logs a fourth total week at the summit, ascending 3-1 and ballooning by 93 percent to 44,000 copies sold. On the all-genre, consumption-based Billboard 200, the set surges 9-4 (49,000 equivalent albums, up 72 percent). CAREER BEST On Top Country Albums, Cody Johnson’s sixth studio set, Gotta Be Me (Cojo), gives the Texas singer-songwriter his most successful week on the list, arriving at No. 2 with 23,000 sold. On the Billboard 200, it begins at No. 11 (25,000). Johnson’s 2014 LP Cowboy Like Me became his first Top Country Albums entry, starting at its No. 7 peak (8,000). Among other debuts in the Top Country Albums top 10: The Cadillac Three’s second set and first to hit the chart, Bury Me in My Boots (Big Machine/ BMLG) (No. 5; 11,000), and Chris Lane’s first fulllength, Girl Problems (Big Loud) (No. 8; 6,000). AIRPLAY ACTION Dierks Bentley’s “Different for Girls,” featuring Elle King (Capitol Nashville), enters Country Airplay’s top 10 (11-9), gaining by 10 percent to 28.7 million. It’s his 21st top 10 and alt-pop-rock artist King’s first ... Ronnie Dunn’s “Damn Drunk” (Nash Icon), with old friend Kix Brooks, opens on Country Airplay at No. 58 (1 million, up 244 percent). As a duo, Brooks & Dunn rolled up 20 Country Airplay No. 1s (1991-2005); the pair is tied for sixth place among all acts for the most leaders in the chart’s history. DANIEL BOCZARSKI/GETTY IMAGES In its 46th week, Jon Pardi’s traditional-flavored “Head Over Boots” ( Capitol Nashville) steps 3-1 on Billboard’s Country Airplay chart (dated Aug. 27), i ncreasing 9 percent to 43.2 million audience impressions, according to Nielsen Music. Only three songs have needed more time to reach No. 1 than the Pardi- and Luke Laird-penned “Boots,” dating to Country Airplay’s Jan. 20, 1990, launch. Chris Young’s “Voices” completed the longest rise to the top: 51 weeks, c ulminating (during two release cycles) on Feb. 19, 2011. Tied for second place with twin 49week trips are Canaan Smith’s “Love You Like That” (July 25, 2015) and David Nail’s “Let It Rain” (featuring Sarah Buxton) (Jan. 21, 2012). “Head Over Boots” marks Pardi’s fifth C ountry Airplay appearance. His previous best showing was the No. 11-peaking “Up All Night” in 2014. “It means a lot to have this No. 1,” the 31-year-old from Dixon, Calif., tells Billboard. “I’ve had four years of experience with radio, and we’ve had some wins and we’ve had some losses. ‘Head Over Boots’ is a very traditional song, and it’s no secret that I’m a traditional-leaning artist. I’m flattered and proud to be in that category. Everyone has their own lane, and this is mine.” Was the song a tough sell to radio p rogrammers at first? “To be honest, ‘Boots’ wasn’t one of my f avorites when it was released,” says KKBQ Houston PD Johnny Chiang. “But once it got on the air, our audience clearly loved it; 1,400 spins and counting. I am very glad that the song, which has a throwback feel to it, resonates with today’s PARDI country audience.” WKLB Boston PD Mike Brophey concurs. “This is another example of a great song and a great artist, and persistence pays off,” he says. “We [first] put it in rotation back in September.” On the hybrid Hot Country Songs chart, which combines airplay, sales and streaming, “Boots” hops 8-5 (up 2 percent), reaching a new best rank. BILLBOARD COUNTRY UPDATE THIS WEEK LAST WEEK WKS ON CHART 1 l 2 l 3 l 4 l 5 l 3 6 7 2 AUGUST 15, 2016 | PAGE 6 OF 21 Country Airplay +/– THIS WEEK +/– RANK 46 HEAD OVER BOOTS C apitol Nashville 43.210 +3.651 7709 811 1 5 28 FROM THE GROUND UP W arner Bros./WAR Dan + Shay 42.047 +3.291 7361 598 2 4 25 MAKE YOU MISS ME M CA Nashville Sam Hunt 42.040 +3.014 7208 531 3 6 24 AMERICAN COUNTRY LOVE SONG R CA Nashville Jake Owen 39.571 +3.115 6852 356 4 8 22 PETER PAN B lack River Kelsea Ballerini 38.300 +4.431 6632 576 5 1 36 FIX B ig Loud Chris Lane 38.288 -7.393 6079 -1518 6 28 RECORD YEAR E MI Nashville Eric Church 33.611 -8.931 5565 -1701 7 HH No. 1 (1 week) HH 7 16 H.O.L.Y. From left: Nielsen client solutions director Josh Bennett, Follese, Billboard Southeast advertising director Lee Ann Photoglo and Billboard country charts manager Jim Asker. LANE, PARDI, MOORE DISTINCT FOR WSIX When WSIX Nashville set the lineup for its annual Guitar-B-Que fundraiser, the station could not have known that the bill would feature two artists with back-to-back No. 1 singles: Chris Lane’s “Fix” took the top slot on Country Airplay leading into the Aug. 10 show, while Jon Pardi’s “Head Over Boots” claims that position this week (see On the Charts, page 4). But the station could have foreseen that the benefit for St. Jude Children’s R esearch Hospital made a statement for the format. While critics have complained that country has become homogenized in recent years, all the acts in the lineup, headlined by Kip Moore, made a case for i ndividuality. Each of t hem ow ned t heir ow n distinctive turf: Countr y tends to borrow inf luences from other genres about 15 years after those trends peak, and Moore showed that continues with his rock-leaning set. Often compared to Bruce Springsteen, who owned the 1980s, Moore used a muscular, sinewy framework that more closely resembled early-2000s power pop. A cover of Jimmy Eat World’s “The Middle” fit p erfectly, e xemplifying the point. Dustin Lynch’s wardrobe — a cowboy hat and a Guns ’N Roses T-shirt —supported his musical story, which teeters between arena-rock sounds and country. There were plenty of Chris Janson (right) visited with musical fireworks with the punchy KAWO Boise, Idaho, PD Rich “Seein’ Red” and amped-up “Hell of Summers on Aug. 9 before a a Night,” though his voice translated station-sponsored performance at best on the traditional ballad “Cow- Powderhaus Brewing. boys and Angels.” Bobby Bones & The Raging Idiots are the country equivalent of Tenacious D, with a show and songs that satirized the 21st-century c oncert experience but left room for a little serious business, particularly a cover of Prince’s “Purple Rain” with Natalie Stovall and Lindsay Ell. Pardi displayed an energetic hard-country sound and a personal enthusiasm that veers between aw-shucks humility and jaded sarcasm. He’s a singular character with a unique style and a set full of hooky melodies. Lane’s falsetto makes him the country equivalent of a Robin Thicke or Joe “Cake by the Ocean” Jonas with just enough clanging banjo to make it work in country. “Fix” is likely just the start. Brandy Clark insists in a recent single that she’s not “the girl next door,” but there’s a neighborly quality to her voice that underscores the truth of her insightful — sometimes acerbic — lyrics. There should always be a spot in the genre for smart observation. • • • • • • Just days after announcing it had renewed its agreement with Kix Brooks, Cumulus revealed major changes to its syndicated show lineup. BILLBOARD COUNTRY UPDATE AUGUST 15, 2016 | PAGE 15 OF 21 MAKIN’ TR ACKS TOM ROLAND tom.roland@billboard.com When Miranda Lambert unveiled the first single from her next album, the stark a cappella opening practically begged the listener to lean into the speaker. In essence, Lambert was launching the album with a statement: Listen closely, ’cause I’m about to get really personal. “It’s just basically writing a journal and putting it on a record and allowing the world to see it,” says Lambert. “I felt like the first song needed to show people that that’s what we’re doing.” It was, by all accounts, a brave decision. Lambert co-wrote “Vice” in July 2015, the same month that her five-year marriage to Blake Shelton ended in divorce. Lambert and LAMBERT co-writers Shane McAnally (“Noise,” “T-Shirt”) and Josh Osborne (“Sangria,” “Wild Child”) mixed drinks that day in Nashville, then started mining her emotional story for what became an exercise in exploring her own imperfections. “Everybody else knew what was going on in my life anyway, so I wasn’t really hiding anything,” reflects Lambert. “We just started writing it, and I think when one person in a co-write is just willing to be honest and lay it out there, it sort of opens the door for everybody, and Shane and Josh sort of made it their story as well. So it’s sort of like little parts of all of us.” “It’s based on a true story, but it’s not, in its detail, autobiographical,” adds McAnally. “It’s not spelling out necessarily what she did. It’s just saying people get over things in different ways, and she was clearly getting over something.” It began with the same sort of cure for heartbreak that Eric Church cited in “Record Year”: music. Lambert had her mind on indie artist John Moreland as they fashioned the opening line — “Sting of the needle dropping on a vinyl” — but it could have been any number of acts that helped her unpack her emotional baggage. “People have those records that take them to a place,” she explains. “Sometimes you’re just in the mood to hurt, because it makes you not feel alone.” Using “sting” and “needle” in that opening phrase suggests that the topic is addiction. But it’s really escape. They added alcohol, travel and casual sex to the list of elixirs that one might use to mask internal pain. “If you look at the definition of vice, it’s got a negative connotation, but it’s also pretty broad,” reasons Lambert. “I describe it as something you run to when you’re running from something else, sort of a remedy for the moment to get past whatever’s going on.” They didn’t know what the title would be until they inserted “vice” into the first line of the chorus, which added another layer of emotion. The verses were laden with fragility, but the chorus uses a descending chord structure, passing through some minor chords and darkening the mood of “Vice,” which is cast in a major key. “A lot of times, any sort of walk down adds tension to a song, and I think that’s what’s coming across as minor-y in that chorus,” says Osborne. The tension reaches its apex in the final verse as Lambert finds herself “standing at the sink not looking at the mirror.” The image ties cleverly to “Bathroom Sink,” a track from her previous album, Platinum. More i mportantly, it makes a huge statement about the song’s protagonist — the opportunity for self-reflection is right in front of her, and she’s doing her best to avoid it. “Mirrors can be your friend and tell you the honest truth,” she explains. “Or they can be your biggest enemy.” At the day’s conclusion, Osborne played guitar as Lambert committed a vocal to her cellphone. It was, he concedes, a “nerve-racking experience.” “I’m trying to not mess it up as we play it, and I’m kind of singing harmony with her, [which is] always kind of intimidating,” he says. “We just wrote the song, we didn’t know it that well yet, and she might get one great pass at it to where we get it perfect, and if I screw the guitar up we could wreck that. Honestly, the fact that she’s Miranda Lambert makes me think, ‘OK, I can’t screw this up.’ ” Recording the master of “Vice” — in fact, recording just about everything on the album — was difficult. The song wrapped up a host of emotions, and because they were all specific to Lambert’s personal journey, they had to be represented with the right mix of sounds. Producer Frank Liddell (David Nail, Lee Ann Womack) co-produced with bass player Glenn Worf (George Strait, Alan Jackson) and engineer Eric Masse (Charlie Worsham, Dierks Bentley), whose East Nashville studio, The C asino, provided a comfortable, homey environment. “It was a very small band, five people in the room,” says Liddell. “There was a lot of discussion about what this thing is: ‘Let’s find Miranda in this song.’ ” Lambert inadvertently provided the answer. As she sang the opening line on her own, L iddell r ecognized it needed to start with her alone, sonically naked, revealing her truth. From there it became a matter of framing her with the right textures to emphasize the imperfections in the storyline. “I didn’t want it to be too pretty or too ‘done,’ ” she says. Most, if not all, of her final vocal was c aptured alongside the band in the tracking session. Guitarist Luke Reynolds later added some agonizing guitar tones, including a buzzy effect that some observers have compared to Rush’s “Tom Sawyer.” Reynolds also incorporated a subtly disturbed guitar solo in overdubs, and singer-songwriter Madi Diaz came up with some ghostly background vocals that Lambert enhanced with her own stacks of harmony. “This song sounds so heavy; it sounds so dark,” says McAnally admiringly. “It sounds somewhat cryptic, but the truth is it’s a great therapeutic release.” It was Lambert’s idea to envelop her voice in the opening with the sound of a scratchy stereo needle, accomplished with something from Masse’s personal collection: a Beatles album, guesses Lambert. The potential chain of events amused Liddell. “I was thinking, ‘If we do this, then we make a vinyl record, is there going to be a vinyl noise playing on a vinyl?’ ” he muses. Lambert went back and forth between potential first singles, and Liddell wasn’t much help. “I didn’t know if we had 20 singles or zero,” he admits. But Lambert’s manager, Shopkeeper owner Marion Kraft, lobbied for “Vice” throughout the process. RCA shipped it to country radio via Play MPE on July 18, and the fan response in streaming and downloads — combined with its immediate airplay — made the song rocket to No. 2 on Hot Country Songs in its second week. It’s currently at No. 11. Lambert performed it publicly for the first time on July 28 in Cleveland, her expressions revealing on the video screen the risk she was feeling as she got firsthand reaction to a song that she knew would create enormous amounts of speculation. A casual Internet search shows that public guesswork has indeed taken place, as listeners debate what activities created Lambert’s emotions and just when they occurred. In the end, Lambert is convinced that if people can listen to “Vice” the same way she experiences a Moreland record, they’ll find the humanity in it and get their own sense of comfort, which is the ultimate goal of art. “I want people to listen to it with an open mind and not overanalyze it,” says Lambert. “If you listen to it as if it’s your own story, it changes the picture.” BECKY FLUKE Miranda Lambert’s ‘Vice’ Puts A Broken Spirit On Display BILLBOARD COUNTRY UPDATE AUGUST 15, 2016 | PAGE 16 OF 21 THE STARK REPORT PHYLLIS STARK phyllis.stark@billboard.com WGNA’s Worst Interview Ever Series Lives Up To Its Name Country artists are routinely interviewed while visiting radio stations and have become accustomed to a certain level of professionalism during those on-air chats with personalities. So imagine the stars’ surprise when they find themselves being grilled on camera by a sweaty, awkward and palpably u ncomfortable man who reads a series of insipid questions to them from a legal pad or an elementary school composition book, then vigorously nods or gapes at them bug-eyed while they try to answer. That’s exactly the scenario country artists face when they happen into WGNA Albany, N.Y.’s Worst Interview Ever series, a bit that completely lives up to its name. The series is the brainchild of Nick Kessler, the promotions manager for Townsquare Media’s Albany cluster who also hosts a Sunday afternoon show on WGNA. He enlisted the help of the cluster’s digital m anaging e ditor A riana Sheehan, who shoots and edits the clips, then promotes them on social media. Kessler originally hoped someone else at the station would pick up his idea and run with it, but when nobody seemed w illing to play the role of the b uffoon, he took it on h imself, c onducting the f irst i nterview in May. So far, he has pranked si x country stars, and is now expanding the concept to WGNA’s s ister stations in other formats, b eginning with an i nter view with John Cooper of KESSLER (left) and HARMON C hristian rock band Skillet. Kessler a nd Sheeha n say t he a rtists and their teams are never in on the joke, and it takes them v arying amounts of time to catch on. The a rtists are only told K essler is new to i nterviewing. C onsequently, the conversations produce some classic reactions, like when the Eli Young Band’s Mike Eli gave Kessler some s erious side-eye or when A merican Idol winner Trent Harmon all but rolled his eyes and looked like he wanted to crawl into a dusty p otted plant p urposely placed so close it was touching him. K essler says during their interview, and for about 10 m inutes after ward, H armon “thought the radio station let a special-needs person win a contest to interview him. That’s why he was going with everything I said. He didn’t want to shoot anything down.” Adds Sheehan, “And that’s exactly what we want.” Each WGNA video provides countless squirm-inducing moments, much like WSIX Nashville afternoon hosts Tige and Daniel’s hilarious and longrunning Tiny Couch interview series, in which they squeeze themselves onto either side of a star perched on a love seat and lob stupid questions. (Watch Tiny Couch segments with Maren Morris and Eric Paslay here.) Kessler insists on calling Dustin Lynch “Dusty” during their chat and repeatedly refers to Eli as “Eli Young” or just “Eli.” (Watch all of his interviews here.) During an interview with Justin Moore, Kessler paused to check his phone, then explained that when an alarm on his device goes off, his therapist told him he’s supposed to look in a mirror and compliment himself. He i mmediately produced a hand mirror and proceeded to do just that. When he asked the singer if he ever gets nervous, Moore shot back, “No, but clearly you do.” While interviewing Eli in the backseat of a car, Kessler poked at the large “highways and broken hearts” tattoo on the singer’s arm, then asked him, “Does that mean anything to you?” Another straight-faced question he had for Eli: “Do you think the back of your knees should be called ‘knee pits?’ ” Kessler began an interview with Kip Moore by thrusting his hands toward the singer and asking if they smelled like gasoline. He also randomly asked Moore, “If you could collaborate with Celine Dion, would you do it?” In the middle of a chat with Harmon, Kessler paused at length to jot down notes on his legal pad. He also sang to Harmon and asked the Idol star to c ritique him, then followed up by asking if he was related to actor Mark Harmon. The artists’ reactions are p riceless. “They have no idea what’s going on,” says K essler, who notes that Justin Moore’s b odyguard “was about to break me in half.” Kessler admits his goal is to make things “as weird as possible” and produce comedy gold in the p rocess. He’ l l d rop a water b ot t le or do whatever it takes to “create chaos,” according to Sheehan. Even when the artists do catch on, Kessler says they still don’t know what questions are coming, so that keeps them off guard. “I try to throw some curve balls in there,” he says. Says Sheehan, “My favorite part is when Nick starts t ouching his forehead and looking really upset that it’s not going well, because you can tell the artists actually feel for him.” Sheehan and Kessler have d iscovered they need to kick other staffers out of the room when they conduct these train wreck interviews so they don’t give the joke away by laughing. But even Sheehan says she has a hard time playing it straight and often finds herself looking down at KESSLER (left) with ELI the floor to keep from losing it. “I just sit there straight-faced with a camera and seem encouraging of his dumbness,” she says. “I have a really hard time, and by the end I just crack. But by the end, they usually u nderstand the joke.” Adds Kessler, “They either pick it up within 30 seconds or they will go the whole time not knowing.” And while he does actually prep for the interviews, he has found that the less he knows about the stars, the more ridiculous his questions can be. Kessler promises future interviews are going to get “way more awkward and crazy.” And while he knows media attention about his series might u ltimately spoil the element of surprise, he hopes artists will recognize that he’s making a fool of himself rather than them and they’ll still want to play along. Burn’s lead single, “That’s the Way,” penned by Holly Lamar and A nnie Ro b o f f, ruled Hot Country Songs for four weeks (beginning Sept. 16, 2000), becoming Messina’s longest-leading of six No. 1s. The Byron Gallimore produced album also yielded the No. 1 “Bring On the Rain” (featuring Tim McGraw), while the title track and “Downtime” reached Nos. 2 and 5, respectively (adding to her total of 12 Hot Country Songs top 10s). Burn has sold 1.3 million copies, according to Nielsen Music. Born in Framingham, Mass., and raised in nearby Holliston before moving to Nashville at 19, Messina also crowned Top Country Albums with Greatest Hits (2003) and Delicious Surprise (2005). Following her departure from Curb Records in 2012, she released her most recent LP, 2014’s No. 19-peaking Me, on her own Dreambound Records; eOne distributed it. —JIM ASKER Messina performed during the Super Bowl Concert Series in February 2005 in Jacksonville, Fla.
