e mourn the passing
of
Phoebe
Jacobs,
Executive Vice President of the
Louis Armstrong Educational
Foundation. Phoebe was a
woman of many talents and a
true friend of The ASCAP Foundation. Phoebe was a fixture

17 and she was dedicated to
Louis and Lucille Armstrong. In
1969 she assisted in establishing the Louis Armstrong Educational Foundation where
she served as vice-president
until her death on April 9,
2012. Always ready with an
idea and an action plan, she
was responsible for fostering
programs at all school levels
to promote music education –
particularly in the field of jazz.
She was a lively friend and colleague and is sorely missed.
Family of Jimmy Van Heusen Goes “All the Way”
he family of Jimmy Van Heusen has established the Jimmy Van Heusen Award

Paramount Pictures. Together he and Burke wrote the scores for many Bing Crosby
movies including Road to Zanzibar, Road to Morocco, Dixie, and Going My Way,
among others. Together they won their first Academy Award.
Later in his life, Jimmy Van Heusen teamed up with lyricist Sammy Cahn and
together they received three Best Song Academy Awards for their works, “All The
Way,” “Call Me Irresponsible,” and “High Hopes.” He and Cahn also received an
Emmy Award for their American standard “Love and Marriage.”
Jimmy Van Heusen
The ASCAP Foundation Jimmy Van Heusen Award will be presented to an
outstanding, promising composer who has participated in the ASCAP/NYU

Spring/Summer 2012
NEA Awards Grant to The ASCAP Foundation
O
n April 25th, 2012 the National Endowment
for the Arts announced the latest round of
2012 NEA funding which included a grant to
The ASCAP Foundation to support the Summer
Music Camp at Manhattan School of Music.
This marks the 10th consecutive year that The
ASCAP Foundation has received a grant, so we
are very proud of this achievement.
The Summer Music Camp at Manhattan School
of Music (MSM) provides intensive music instruction to children ranging in age from 11
to 17 for voice majors in musical theater, and
instrumental majors for large and small
ensembles. Camp goals include increasing
levels of music appreciation, knowledge, understanding
and
performance
skills
based on the
N a t i o n a l
Learning
Standards for
the Arts. This
unique
opportunity goes
beyond outstanding musical training. It instills discipline, positive social
development, a respect for each other’s abilities and a lesson in teamwork.
