They’re playing it, so that says a lot right there.” Indeed, Republic Nashville seems to have made an impact with broadcasters without putting the band through the typical radio promotion tour. WUSN Chicago PD Jeff Kapugi, for example, bought into the band before it even finished its first song during a Whiskey Jam cruise in July 2014. iHeartMedia executive vp programming Clay Hunnicutt became a believer during an industry showcase at the Tennessee home of Republic Nashville president Jimmy Harnen in August. Many more programmers saw them during a 19city jaunt as the opening act for Frankie Ballard during the fall. “Frankie heard the music, loved the band and gave ATH a fantastic opportunity,” says Harnen. “This tour allowed us to have ATH play [with a] full band where fans and country radio could see them in their full, natural environment. We also had a lot of country radio programmers love the music and commit early.” It doesn’t hurt that the raw, urgent sound they heard during those concerts is matched in the 13 tracks that populate Southernality, due June 9. “We really kind of approached it as if we were playing the songs live in rehearsals,” says Satcher. Cobb captured the band in loose form, which was achieved in part by recording at Zac Brown’s Southern Ground studios at the edge of Music Row. “They have an incredible chef, and they have an incredible bar,” says Cobb. “And the band — they’re fish, man. They drink like no tomorrow, and if they can re-create what they have onstage, that was happening in the studio. The band was only enjoying the fact that they had a keg and a bunch of liquor downstairs. I would attribute a lot of that rock’n’roll spirit to the fact that they actually live like that.” A Thousand Horses’ history isn’t all that different from that of Alabama, a group founded by three cousins who woodshedded their way into country’s history books by similarly welding rock and country influences as the house band at a bar in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The Horses’ Hobby and Satcher were high-school buddies in Newberry, S.C., and Satcher’s cousin, Deloach, played music with them when he visited during summers from Savannah, Ga. Brown was brought into the band somewhere around 2010. Heavily influenced by the Stones, The Allman Brothers Band and Lynyrd Skynyrd, the group fortuitously got signed briefly to Interscope, where it was paired with Cobb, who stayed a fan even after it lost its deal. After losing its label, the Horses also lost a manager and a booking agent. That proved to be a pivotal, character-building event. “We definitely had a moment where we all sat down and said, ‘Oh, what the hell do we do now? We got nothing,’ ” recalls Satcher. “We were back to square one. And I think we were all like, ‘Well, what else are we going to do it? This is what we do. We were doing it before we had all that. We’re going to do it now.’ ” FEBRUARY 17, 2015 | PAGE 2 OF 12 Dustin Lynch performed Feb. 6 in the WIL St. Louis concert series Hot Country Nights. BILLBOARD COUNTRY UPDATE FEBRUARY 17, 2015 | PAGE 3 OF 12 McGhee Entertainment partner Scott McGhee “had been looking for a ‘Southern country/rock band’ for several years,” he says. So when a friend recommended he check out ATH, he added them to the management roster, believing their sound would be familiar to country’s upper demos and fresh to the genre’s younger fans. “The band subtly captures a spirit, sound and delivery that we haven’t seen recently,” he says. “It’s just what they do and who they are.” The forthcoming album is an authentic replication of their live identity, all the way down to the desperate gasps of breath that Hobby inhales between phrases. Mixing engineer Justin Niebank (Vince Gill, Eli Young Band) left those sounds in, underscoring the energy in Hobby’s approach. “That’s how I’ve always sung,” says Hobby. “I don’t think I ever even really noticed it. It’s not a conscious thought of keeping breaths or anything for me. That’s just how it comes down to tape.” The band is taking pre-orders for Southernality now, giving buyers three tracks in addition to “Smoke” so they can have a better-rounded picture of ATH. A Thousand Horses will get another opportunity to introduce themselves when they play 30 minutes or more as an opening act on Darius Rucker’s appropriately named Southern Style Tour this summer. The band will have its three backup singers in tow, with that 1969-ish sound — a little bit of Stones, a little bit of 1990s Black Crowes — that walks a fine line between rock and country. Analysts may have trouble figuring out where they fit. Consumers probably aren’t concerned with how it’s formatted. “The country fans have always responded,” says Satcher. “It was those types of fans that were drawn to our band.” LADY A DISPENSES WITH PROMOTION Lady Antebellum apparently has a thing for beverages: The band took part in a Lipton Iced Tea ad campaign in 2012, earned its most recent No. 1 on Country Airplay with “Bartender” and now has a Coca-Cola association that supports its current single, “Freestyle.” The new contest involves Coke’s Freestyle machine, a restaurant beverage BILLBOARD COUNTRY BOXSCORE Gross Artist Attendance $477,636 $54.75, $34.75 $437,043 $71, $24 $411,719 $54.75, $34.75 $401,237 $62, $27.50 $396,595 $67.50, $28 FLORIDA GEORGIA LINE The Cajundome, Lafayette, La./Jan. 23 ERIC CHURCH Taco Bell Arena, Boise, Idaho/Jan. 30 FLORIDA GEORGIA LINE Mississippi Coast Coliseum, Biloxi, Miss./Jan. 22 ERIC CHURCH Sleep Train Arena, Sacramento, Calif./Feb. 4 ERIC CHURCH Save Mart Center, Fresno, Calif./Jan. 22 9,543 sellout 8,943 9,150 8,425 9,089 9,792 sellout 8,440 8,717 Ticket Price(s) Venue/Date(s) Capacity Promoter(s) LIVE NATION THE MESSINA GROUP/AEG LIVE LIVE NATION THE MESSINA GROUP/AEG LIVE THE MESSINA GROUP/AEG LIVE Reported worldwide boxscore figures for Country artists. Audience totals on the chart are derived, in part, using certain Arbitron Inc. copyrighted Persons 12+ audience estimates (under license © 2015, Arbitron Inc.). Country Indicator is tabulated using reported playlists and Nielsen BDS-monitored airplay at 102 stations, ranked by total plays. BULLETS l Awarded on Country Airplay to titles gaining audience or remaining flat from the previous week. A song will also receive a bullet if its percentage loss in audience does not exceed the percentage of monitored station downtime for the format. Titles that decline in audience but increase in detections will also receive a bullet if the total audience erosion for the week does not exceed 3%. Bullets are awarded on Country Indicator to titles gaining plays or remaining flat from the previous week. TIES On Country Airplay, if two songs are tied in total audience, the song with the larger increase in audience is placed first. On Country Indicator, if two songs are tied in total plays, the song with the larger increase in plays is placed first. RECURRENTS On Country Airplay, descending titles below No. 10 in either audience or detections are moved to recurrent after 20 weeks, provided that they are not still gaining enough audience points to bullet or if they rank below No. 10 and post a third consecutive week of audience decline, regardless of total chart weeks. On Country Indicator, descending, non-bulleted titles below No. 10 are moved to recurrent after 20 weeks. HOT SHOT DEBUT Awarded to the highest-ranking new entry on Country Airplay and Country Indicator, respectively. MOST ADDED The total number of new adds officially reported to Billboard by each reporting station, or by an automatic-add threshold (seven plays for the first time in a chart tracking week, according to Nielsen BDS) for stations that do not report adds. MOST INCREASED AUDIENCE/ PLAYS Most Increased Audience on Country Airplay and Most Increased Plays on Country Indicator list the songs with the greatest week-to-week increases in total audience or plays, respectively. AIRPOWER Awarded on Country Airplay to titles ranking inside top 20 in plays and audience rankings for the first time, with increases in both plays and audience. BREAKER Awarded on Country Airplay to titles achieving airplay (at least one detection) at 60% of reporting stations for the first time. © 2015 Prometheus Global Media, LLC BILLBOARD COUNTRY UPDATE A AIN’T WORTH THE WHISKEY S ony/ATV Tree Publishing, BMI/Year Of The Dog Music, ASCAP/ Josh Martin Music, SESAC/Bluewater Music Servies Corporation, SESAC ( C.Swindell, A.Sanders, J.Martin) 1 2 ALL COUNTRY ON YOU Y ear Of The Dog Music, ASCAP/Book Of Spells, ASCAP/Green Vinyl Music, ASCAP/Big Loud Songs, ASCAP/Play Animal, ASCAP ( J.
