Empowering leaders,
changing the world
McCormick Theological Seminary encourages,
embraces, celebrates, and prepares women and
men from all denominations and backgrounds for
Christian ministry and service, advancing a model of
education that is cross-cultural, urban, Reformed,
and ecumenical.
The heart of McCormick is cross-cultural and it shows up in the people you meet
and the many opportunities you have to experience Christianity in different contexts.
My first year, I was part of the Summer Language Institute for international students.
I was immersed in the English language, the American culture, and the city of
Chicago. What I’ve learned about McCormick is that it’s embracing, supportive,
inclusive and diverse. A grant from McCormick covers 75 percent of my tuition. I
couldn’t be here without that kind of assistance. And, I couldn’t stay here without
the support I get from my McCormick community.

President’s Message
Theological education
makes a difference
participating in this work which is
rooted in the gospel of Jesus Christ, a
gospel of peace. We are committed to
launching leaders who hear, see, and
act differently to bring about a more
peaceful future for all of humanity.
Theological education is meant to be
transformational. It’s meant to change
our attitudes and actions, our values
and priorities, and our stance and
approach to the gap between “the
world as it is” and “the world as should
be.” Those with a theological education
are to see and hear differently. When we
look at the violence in our streets, we
are to see the need for justice. When
we hear the roar for political power
and control, we listen for the piercing
whisper that challenges us to treat
others as we would treat ourselves.
The McCormick difference is being
noticed and it’s showing up in results:
McCormick Theological Seminary
aims to foster the kind of leadership
that makes a difference. A difference
within us. A difference in our world.
This past year, as the public debate
about violence in our streets was
raging, we initiated our first annual
theme, “Peacemaking in the City: A
Faithful Response to Urban Violence.”
Through a series of lectures, events,
and actions, the seminary sought
to create responses to the violence
that has been impacting the people
of Chicago and beyond. Leaders in
congregations and our city are making
a difference. And, McCormick is actively

•
Our 2015-16 enrollment is up. We
saw a more than 40 percent
increase in our incoming
master’s-level enrollment from last
year, including our second class
of Community Engagement
Fellows, a signature program of
the Center for Faith and Service.
•
Dr. Steed Davidson joined our
faculty as associate professor
of Hebrew Bible. He brings to
McCormick an extensive
knowledge of postcolonial and
gendered perspectives on Hebrew
Scripture.
•
We had a banner year in fundraising.
Building on the success of our first
Visionary Award Dinner, we received
two major grants from the Henry
Luce and Arthur Vining Davis
foundations, totaling $550,000.
•
We sold and leased back our
residential building. This
transaction made it possible for
us to retire a significant portion
of our debt, reducing the
seminary’s exposure to interest
rates that were anticipated to
increase later this year.
These are just some of the ways
McCormick is making a difference. In
this annual report, you’ll read about
plans that will continue to make a
difference within us, our communities,
and around our world.
We are grateful for your support and all
the ways you join us in serving the
mission of God in these extraordinary
times. You make a difference to
McCormick. Thank you!
Peace and grace,

Guide our feet unto
the path of peace
Through prayer and action, the
McCormick community finds ways
to offer faithful responses to urban
violence.
could learn how to get involved and do
something about a very disturbing issue.”
In ways both mindful and meaningful,
McCormick brought its theme,
“Peacemaking in the City: A Faithful
Response to Urban Violence,” to life
during the past academic year. Speakers
such as Rev. Dr. Jeremiah Wright, Jr.,
Rev. Dr. Otis Moss III, Rev. Dr. Cain
Hope-Felder, Rev. Dr. Eboni MarshalTurman, Alex Kotlowitz, author, and Ms.
Cleopatra Cowley-Pendleton, the mother
of slain teenager Hadiya Pendleton,
shared their pain, their perspectives, and
their hope for peace rather than grief in
our communities. Student-led workshops
looked at racism and the diasporic
experience and its impact on identity,
community, and solidarity.
Dark-colored masking tape, cut and
taped to the floor of the Ender Lobby,
was used to form outlines of human
bodies. Flowers, candles, and toys
placed near these outlined images
recreated the all-too-familiar urban crime
scene memorial. For a week in October,
McCormick’s main entrance became
hallowed ground. And, those who
realized what the outlines represented
walked around the sacred sketches,
acknowledging that our actions are to
honor the lost and lead communities
toward paths of peace.
“People tend to walk over tragedies
without taking the time to really look at
them,” says D’Angelo Smith, one of nine
students who created the Ender floor
mural. A second-year master of divinity
student, Smith had to look tragedy in
the face when his brother was killed
this spring in a drive-by shooting. “The
exhibit was disruptive, as it was meant to
be,” he says, “and it caused students to
think about and attend events where we
When Presbyterian leaders from across
the country were in Chicago for the
NEXT Church Conference, their visit
included a tour of McCormick and a
workshop that provided time to lament
the violence that they might have seen
or experienced. “Violence exists in every

community,” says Rev. Veronica Johnson
(MDiv ‘12), senior director of Admissions
and Enrollment, one of two McCormick
facilitators of the workshop. “People
from all backgrounds and communities
experience violence – from the violence
of rape and drug abuse on college
campuses, to the domestic and sexual
violence that can take place in the home.
As we allowed the participants to name
and acknowledge their concerns about
all forms of violence, it was a liberating
experience for us all. As one participant
remarked, ‘I have never been asked,
in a faith-based setting, how violence
has impacted me; no one has ever
encouraged me to lament.’”
Having The Conversation
McCormick’s Church Relations Dinner
and Discussion Series brought the
seminary and the community together to:
• Re-imagine the Easter story with
Dr. Claudio Carvalhaes, associate
professor of Preaching and Worship
Offering peace to ex-offenders
Is it an act of violence to allow the
incarcerated, the formerly incarcerated,
and their families to struggle without hope
of support? McCormick has pondered
that question and others like it. And, in
the spring of this year, in collaboration
with the World Mission Institute, offered a
new course, Prisons: New Realities, New
Mission. Taught by Rev. Dr. Nolan Shaw
(DMin ‘96), the course gave students
opportunities to examine theologically
informed prison ministry and re-entry
models and to gain an understanding of
the U.S. court and prison systems.
• Learn faith-based fundraising practices
with Lisa Dagher, vice president,
Seminary Relations and Development
• Discover ways to impact the lives of
the incarcerated, formerly incarcerated,
and their families with Rev. Dr. Nolan
Shaw (DMin ‘96), executive director of
Boys to Men, Inc. and instructor for
McCormick’s Prisons: New Realities,
New Mission course.
Each evening event allowed attendees
to engage in discussions that identified
ways to work together for the good of the
community. Several attendees have been
inspired to learn more about McCormick
and explore the value of a theological
education during these events.
“McCormick serves one of its key
purposes when it creates space
for theological reflection around
contemporary issues like that of
incarceration,” says Dr. Ken Sawyer,
associate professor of Church History.
One of the course’s designers, he joined
with colleague, Rev. Dr. David Daniels,
the Henry Winters Luce Professor of
World Christianity, in the initial planning
for the course and a conference which
focused on prison ministries. “We do
our best when we realize that ministry
is where theory and practice meet.
Because our classes include women and
men engaged in justice ministries, we
try to connect their experience with the
resources of the tradition. It is exciting to
see the emergence of new ministries and
new courses. Some very good things are
happening here.”

Sharing the value of a
seminary education
The Community Engagement Fellows
are showing other young adults how a
seminary education can support their
commitment to faithful service and to
the community through the New Faces
of Ministry Tour.
from New Jersey to Georgia speaking to
young adults about a topic that can make
some crowds very nervous: faith. But the
discussion does come with a postscript:
seminary is not what you think it is.
“Seminary is not only a place for those
passionate about serving faithfully, but
it’s also a place of growing, learning, and
questioning your faith,” says Mason.
Gina Sterk, a Community Engagement
Fellow at the Center for Faith and Service
who’s in her second year at McCormick,
echoes Mason’s thought.
“Why would I want to go to a seminary?”
is a question to which 29 seminary
students are providing cogent and
compelling answers as part of this year’s
New Faces of Ministry Tour. In its first
year at McCormick, the Tour, an initiative
of McCormick’s Center for Faith and
Service, engages seminarians from
across the country and service-minded
young adults in a meaningful dialogue
about theological education. But if that
sounds easy, Fellow and McCormick
master of divinity student Quantisha
Mason assures you that it’s not.
“People often misunderstand what
seminary is and what ministry looks like
today,” Sterk says. “The Tour allows
young adults who care about service
and engagement to realize that the
Church cares about what they’re doing
and can provide resources, networks,
and experiences that can support their
passions and interests. The dialogue
about church has to offer ways to “be”
the Church through relationship building
and greater community service.”
“It takes a lot of resilience to have this
experience with people who may be
different from you,” the Connecticut native
said while visiting Montreat Conference
Center in North Carolina. Mason, one of
four McCormick students who are part
of the Tour, spent six weeks this summer
travelling along the Eastern Seaboard
Supported by grants from the Arthur

Luce Foundation, and the Westminster
Presbyterian Church in Minneapolis,

theological education by reaching out to
young adults who have demonstrated
an interest in issues of social justice and
community service through their volunteer
work at youth camps, mission trips, and
not-for-profit organizations. The Tour
Fellows visited colleges, congregations,
summer camps, and youth corps, making
presentations, holding conversations,
leading worship and participating in
opportunities that allowed them to share
their experiences and answer questions
about ministry or seminary life.
“The Tour is an ideal training ground for
preparing to minister to the diversity of
our society,” says Erika Dornfeld, Tour
coordinator and a 2014 Tour Fellow.
“While the experience of dialoguing
about faith and service with people you
only just met has the potential to be
uncomfortable, I believe every Fellow is
transformed by the experience. We learn
to work collaboratively on a strategic
level and to make connections with other
students, alumni, and community leaders
that will last a lifetime. When students
have the opportunity to engage with a
Tour Fellow, they see that ministry today
does have a new face and can consider
ministry as a vocation.”
“We have a generation
of young people in their
20s and 30s who define
themselves by their
commitment to service
and justice work. The work
of the Center for Faith and
Service is to identify, train
and launch these young
leaders for traditional
and new expressions of
ministry.”

Taking
aim at gun violence
McCormick Professor David Daniels
listens, learns, and shares what
churches are doing to address gun
violence in Chicago and its suburbs.
research by Rev. Dr. David Daniels, the
Henry Winters Luce Professor of World
Christianity at McCormick. Supported
by a grant, Dr. Daniels has spent the past
two years surveying the Black Church’s
role in being an effective leader for social
change. The survey covered social
issues such as public health and social
services, economic and political action,
and restorative justice and anti-violence.
Nearly 40 churches in Chicago and its
suburbs participated in the survey Dr.
Daniels conducted in cooperation with
Northwestern and Loyola universities.
In April of this year, he shared its
findings about the Church’s response
to restorative justice and anti-violence
– focusing on its finding around gun
violence. He gave a report at the preview
of a public broadcasting documentary
about this social plague.
Hardly a day goes by that the Chicago
evening news doesn’t include a report
about homicide and injury due to gun
violence. In 2014, the “City of Broad
Shoulders” had to carry 390 gun violence
victims to their final rest and wrapped its
arms around countless family members,
friends, and classmates left to face the
future with sudden grief. It’s a scene
that hit home to McCormick in 2013
when high school teenager Hadiya
Pendleton, whose family was known to
the McCormick community, was shot and
killed in a park fewer than two miles from
McCormick’s doors. Then, in April of this
year, the community grieved again when
21-year-old D’Montre Smith, brother of
McCormick student D’Angelo Smith,
was gunned down in a case of mistaken
identity.
“One of the first things to note,” says Dr.
Daniels, “is that churches are doing a lot
to address gun violence, but their efforts
are not part of the public’s awareness.
Nearly 60 percent of the churches
that responded to the survey provided
specific actions they take in response to
incidences of gun violence.”
These incidents made our seminarywide theme, “Peacemaking in the City:
A Faithful Response to Urban Violence”
personal. They also called attention to
8
These actions, while varied, can be
grouped into three categories: prevention,
response, and intervention. (See sidebar.)
What makes any of them more effective is
their alignment with best practices.
“The initiatives that work best include
training in conflict management and
self-control, mentoring opportunities
for youth, and conversations with youth
or gang members about how negative
behaviors impact their communities
and their own lives,” Dr. Daniels says.
“Churches that are most effective in
addressing the issue of gun violence had
one or more of these features as part of
their program.”
Prevent. Respond. Intervene.
Adding mentoring, conflict management
training, and conversations about
the impact of negative behaviors on
a community can make any of these
initiatives to curtail gun violence more
effective.
Prevent
•Make the church a safe haven for youth
by providing after-school and sports
programs
•Offer GED and other educational
opportunities to young adults
Seminarians: leaders in social change
A second significant finding from the
survey was the impact of seminarytrained pastors in the battle against gun
violence and other social injustices. The
survey lends support to the conclusion
that theologically educated pastors are
more likely to lead their congregations
to be involved in activities that address
urban issues.
•Partner with anti-violence organizations
•Provide religious instruction to youth
and families
Respond
•Organize prayer vigils, rallies, and anti violence walks
•Care for victims’ families
•Attend funerals; offer grief counseling
“A seminary education provides a
theological perspective that informs the
kind of thinking and introduces students
to the resources needed to effectively
deal with urban issues,” says Dr. Daniels.
“It’s from their seminary training that
pastors learn about different models of
ministry, how to recruit talent from within
the congregation, and how to encourage
congregations to open their doors more
widely to a broader community – just
some of the knowledge they’ll need
to effectively address social issues in
their community. Seminary graduates
impact communities in positive ways.
Their presence offers hope that we can
effectively address the social issues of our
day, including gun violence.”
•Identify financial needs; share sourcing
options
•Meet with gang leaders after an
incident; urge them not to retaliate
Intervene
•Advocate for youth with local, state,
and federal legislators
•Offer gang members options for
housing, education, healthcare, and
drug treatment
•Be part of coordinated efforts among
local police, churches, and community
leaders

years. Over her professional career, she
worked for five educational institutions,
using her many degrees in profoundly
effective ways for students, colleagues,
and her community. She is one of
the authors of Zionism Unsettled: A
Congregational Study Guide, and Zionism
and the Quest for Justice in the Holy
Land. Dr. Coffman is a member of The
Chicago Faith Coalition on Middle East
Policy and serves as moderator of the
Syria/Lebanon Mission Network of the
Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.).
An educator, author, and activist, Dr.
Pauline Coffman is known for her
faithful service to the regional and national
bodies of the Presbyterian Church
(U.S.A.) and her commitment to peace
and justice in the Middle East. Her many
accomplishments include coordinating
an alliance that helped integrate schools
in Dallas, leading the Middle East Task
Force of the Presbytery of Chicago,
and serving as Dean of Student Life at
McCormick Theological Seminary for six
“All who know Dr. Coffman know of her
very extensive knowledge and devotion
to a peaceful and just resolution to the
long-standing conflict in the Middle East,”
says Rev. David Bebb Jones (MDiv ‘62),
pastor emertius of Presbyterian Church of
Western Springs. “She has been a leader
in religious efforts to understand and
address the complex issues that face that
region of the world.”
10
Dr. Coffman and her husband, Rev. Dr.
Robert Coffman (MTS BD ‘63), have
been part of the faith community of First
United Church of Oak Park for 28 years.
She’s served on her church council as
a ruling elder and was responsible for
planning and maintaining the church’s
ongoing relationship with a mosque in a
nearby community. Her commitment to
the work of the church has been local,
national, and international in scope.
Rev. Hammond’s passion
has always been focused on
helping urban congregations
in multicultural settings
engage issues of hunger,
homelessness, poverty,
education, housing, and
community organizing.
All who know Dr. Coffman
know of her very extensive
knowledge and devotion to a
peaceful and just resolution to
the long-standing conflict in
the Middle East.
Rev. Hammond is the founding president
of the Albuquerque Opportunity Center, a
men’s shelter that coordinates a citywide
“housing first” model. For 14 years, he
has co-chaired Albuquerque Interfaith,
a community organization working on
immigrant rights and public education.
At the church, he helped initiate the
La Mesa Arts Academy, a free afterschool arts program with a neighboring
elementary school, as well as the La
Mesa Neighborhood Garden Park.
Working with the Presbyterian Hunger
Program, Rev. Hammond supports
community organizing efforts nationally.
In 2001, he edited “Homelessness:
The Church Responds to an Enduring
Tragedy” for Church and Society. In
2008, he wrote a study guide for the
book Places of Promise, Finding Strength
in Your Church’s Location.
For his relentless work alongside
homeless, poor, and disenfranchised
people, and his belief that the church
exists for others, Rev. Trey Hammond
models a shepherd’s love for his
congregation and a prophet’s hunger for
social transformation.
Before coming to Albuquerque in 1999
as pastor of La Mesa Presbyterian
Church, Rev. Hammond served in the
Urban Ministry Office of the Presbyterian
Church (U.S.A.), and as a pastor in
three urban parishes in Dallas. He
helped found Uncle Calvin’s, a church
coffeehouse that has been an acoustical
music showcase for 33 years. He was
involved in the start-up of three homeless
programs, as well as provided leadership
for rehabbing an abandoned property
into 300 units of affordable housing. Rev.
Hammond’s passion has always been
focused on helping urban congregations
in multicultural settings engage issues
of hunger, homelessness, poverty,
education, housing, and community
organizing.
“Rev. Hammond is a servant leader,
community builder, pastor, organizer,
a lover of urban communities and their
people,” says Rev. Phil Tom, (MDiv ‘76),
interim pastor of Eastchester Presbyterian
Church, Bronx, N.Y. “Who knows how
many people in Dallas and Albuquerque
have a home because of his work? To
Rev. Hammond and the La Mesa Church,
congregational transformation and
serving the larger community go hand in
hand. McCormick prepared him well for
this work.”

specific programs. Each of these gifts
ensures that McCormick will continue to
prepare students to serve the church and
the world in the McCormick tradition that
is cross-cultural, urban, Reformed and
ecumenical.
You, our alumni/ae, trustees and dear
friends have generously contributed time,
money and resources to help us realize
our goals for fiscal 2015. Because of your
bountiful giving, we received more for our
annual fund in this past fiscal year than in
any of the previous seven years! Your gifts
truly make a difference in our community
and the world.
Through our endowment and the annual
giving of individuals, families,
congregations, foundations, and other
organizations, McCormick has been able
to lower tuition and provide financial aid,
helping to make a seminary education
more affordable and accessible.
We honor all of you, our donors who
support the McCormick mission. Some
of you give monthly, quarterly or annually.
Others give endowed scholarships or
faculty chairs. And, some of you leave
gifts to McCormick in your estate plans
and foundations – many of you sponsor
McCormick Theological Seminary thanks
each of you.

Why I give to McCormick
“During our time as students at McCormick, my wife, Judith, and I received many
great gifts of learning, personal friendships, mentoring and life-long relationships.
From 1953 to 1956, a whole new world of ideas, understanding, a vision of a global
church, the challenges and struggles for social justice and the reality of the beloved
community were opened up to us. We are grateful and deeply appreciative for the
life-long blessings received through McCormick Seminary. Our gifts are tokens of
thanksgiving.”
