he original Great Santini, was a
hard nosed, hard drinking, hell raisT
ing Marine, portrayed by Oscar winning
movie star Robert Duvall in a movie of the
same name. In the movie, Duvall, as
Marine Fighter Pilot “Bull” Meecham is
tough and arrogant and treats his wife and
kids as he would a bunch of Marine
recruits.
The only reason we call our Santini
“Great” is because since 1983 the League

and the United

the robbery,
Irene Hughes
was working in Pam’s General Store at
358 Highway 517 in League City when a
man, later identified as Santini, came into
the store, sort of meandered around without buying anything, and left. Minutes
later he came back into the store, laid a
large knife on the counter and demanded
the money from the cash drawer, which
January 2006
Irene Hughes promptly handed over.
According to Hughes, Santini grabbed the
cash, fled into the
parking lot and
escaped in a car

Hughes turned

It was about eleven o’clock at night
when the two vehicles met head-on in the
center of the eastbound lane of Highway
96. Police reports indicate that neither
driver touched the brake pedals of their
vehicles. “It would be the same if you hit
a solid wall going 180 miles per hours,”
said Marty Adcock, the League City Police
Officer who investigated the crash.
Hilario Saavedra and his cousin, Victor
Correa, were pronounced dead on the
scene. The two backseat passengers,
Ismael and Julio Saavedra were flown by
Life Flight helicopter to Herman Hospital

dead on arrival.
A witness told the League City Police

collide and that neither driver seemed to
have taken any evasive action to avoid the
other. Officer Dan Kreiger, who had
been and EMT prior to becoming a
police officer, and had been on
the scenes of many wrecks during
his career, said, “It was the

CRIME
ALERT
On September 16, 2005, a wallet was
stolen from a Dickinson resident while
she was in the waiting room of a doctor’s
office. Before she realized that the wallet
was missing a suspect had used the credit card to make large purchases at two
different Wal-Mart stores, one in
Pearland. On October 26 a suspect using
the victim’s name cashed checks at
Randall’s, HEB, and CVS Pharmacy
stores located near I-45 and Fuqua in
Houston. A video camera inside the CVS
Pharmacy captured photos of the suspect.
This same woman is also suspected of stealing a credit card from a purse at
the University of Houston Clear Lake’s Pearland campus and using the credit
cards in southeast Houston.
If you recognize the suspect please contact Detective Craig Fos at 281-3376341 or by e-mail at cfos@ci.dickinson.tx.us

near Sugarland, Texas. When word reached
Santini that he was about to be arrested, he
surrendered to a Sugarland police officer
with whom he was acquainted. After his
arrest, officers were able to recover $219 of
the $270 that Santini took in the robbery
and the clothes that he wore which were
described perfectly by Hughes.
The investigation and arrest was a generally routine event for League City Police.
There was a good description, a quick
arrest, a confession, charges filed, case
closed. Police like these kind of cases.
After obtaining a written confession, Santini
was booked into the Galveston County Jail
where he was held until posting a $20,000
bond and being release. That was the last
time anyone in Galveston County ever saw
Donald Michael Santini.
The following November, a young, good
looking stranger from Texas made his
appearance in the towns and villages along
the Manatee County seashore in Florida
where he got a job as a maintenance worker in a popular condo and did odd jobs in
the Longboat Keys community.
This stranger from Texas used the name
Michael Charles Stevens and quickly introduced himself into the young, party crowd
which soon led to a romantic relationship
with a female employee of the condo.
Investigators say that although the man
known as Stevens maintained his own apartment, he spent much of his time at the
home of this new found girlfriend and her
minor son. Often he would drive the minor
son to the daycare center in the mornings or
pick him up in the evenings for the girlfriend.
During one of these trips to the daycare
center, Stevens became acquainted with
Cynthia Woods, an employee of the center.
Almost immediately he began asking her for
dates, however she showed little interest in
him. Cynthia, at the time, was involved in a
very contentious divorce with either her second or third husband and dating was not
something that stirred her interest. She was
a single mother of three and another man
was not high on her list of priorities. Stevens
continued to ask her out when he had occa-

sion to go to the daycare. Investigators say
that Stevens tried to convince Cynthia to
date him by pretending to be a relative of
someone she knew. Cynthia told her son,
13- year old Tommy, that this man who
came to the daycare was bugging her to go
out with him but that she had declined his
invitations.
The divorce battle between Cynthia Woods
and her husband had become bitter. There
were allegations that her son Tommy from a
previous marriage may have been abused
by the husband and this got the Division of
Family Services involved.

Everyone who knew Cynthia became
alarmed. Authorities became alarmed
because they were desperately trying to capture a serial killer who had been dumping the
bodies of his female victims in adjoining
Hillsborough County.
Four days later Cynthia Wood’s body was
found by two young girls riding bicycles, floating in a ditch in Hillsborough County, not far
from where police had discovered the bodies
of two other women murdered weeks before.
Immediately newspapers, radio and television
began reporting the discovery of another
female body in the same area where previous
corpses had been found. The public was left
to assume that the serial killer had claimed
another victim.
Investigators could not immediately identify the body. It had been floating in water in
the hot temperatures of summertime in
Florida. There was no identification on the
body, nothing to help figure out who she was.
A couple of days later Cynthia Woods
estranged husband called the Sheriff’s
Office. “My wife and I are going through a
divorce and she’s missing,” he told a
detective. “I’m wondering if that is her
that they found in Hillsborough County,”
he said. That sent Hillsborough County
investigators heading south to Bradenton
to talk with the husband. During their conversation the husband provided some
information that suggested to detectives
that the recently discovered body was in
fact Cynthia Woods, but there was not

Stevens, Cynthia finally told her son that she
was going to relent and go out with him just
to get it over with and maybe he would quit
bugging her.
On Tuesday evening, June 5th, 1984,
Charles Michael Stevens arrived at Cynthia
Woods home to pick her up for their date. He
came inside, spoke briefly to Tommy, and the
couple left. There was no mention of where
they were going or what they planned to do on
the so-called date. Tommy watched his mother
and the stranger drive away in Stevens van.
Cynthia’s other two children were staying with
their father, so that left Tommy at home alone.
When they drove away, it was the last time
Tommy saw his mother alive.
The next morning, Cynthia’s sister learned
that Tommy had been home alone all night
and that his mother had not returned from the
date. This was very much out of character for
Cynthia so the sister filed a missing persons
report with the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office
in Bradenton.
By coincidence, on Wednesday morning a
caseworker with the Division of Family Services
went to Woods home on an investigation concerning allegations leveled in the divorce case.
The caseworker discovered Tommy at home
along and began contacting friends and relatives. Tommy could only tell authorities that his
mother had gone out with a guy named Mike
that she met at the daycare center and that he
was supposedly a relative of someone she
knew. Investigators would later learn that this
was a story fabricated to entice Cynthia out on
a date.

Let me tell you the “short of it”
for them.
In the year 2000
By Wydell Dixon, Whiskerville became a reality on a very
Whiskerville Animal small scale. I have now taken every
Sanctuary
dime of my retirement money (plus
ll this time I thought that
A
Whiskerville had become a
household word! I truly felt that everyone and their brother KNEW that we
were a 100% no-kill facility that had outgrown our homes and had to buy a
building to carry on. Recently I have
found that not to be so. I reckon we are
just not very good marketers!
Let me tell you the “short of it” . . . .
in this area we are doing the very most
with the very least. I worked for Amoco
Oil for 24 years (went to work there at
age 19 in 1975) and opted out when
British Petroleum bought the company
in 1999. I humanely trapped/rescued
about 300 cats/kittens and 3 pregnant
dogs during my career. In addition, I
volunteered to transport all of the
injured/oiled wildlife out of the refinery
to the area permitted rehabilitators.
With not a dime of help from the company, I took care of all these animals
health needs and found suitable homes
some of my husband’s-he still works for
BP) and bought a beautiful historical
building in Texas City in the old part of
Sixth Street (we fondly call it the “money
pit”). It was designed by architect Jack
Godard and built in 1941. It survived
the Texas City explosion and Hurricane
“Carla”. One can only imagine the
expense of bringing such an old beauty
up to code, etc. Does it have lots of
potential? You better know it! Some of
the selling points were the terrazzo
floors that roll up the walls, nine-foot
ceilings, and original crown molding all
the way around the perimeter of the
main building. Do we still have a lot to
do before we open? Oh yes! Some of
the renovations (major expenses) to
date, are as follows: our fence material
alone was over $8,000 (the city of Texas
City is requiring that we put up vinyl
fencing), electrical updates thus far
about $6,000, new windows, $10,000,
the list goes on and on. We are probably about $30,000 away from finishing
enough to open full time. In the interim, we have a Pet Fair the first and third
Saturday of every month to showcase
our cats/kittens for adoption, microchip, vaccinate, etc. for the general public.
All profits made from our
services/sales go right back to the animals in our care, utilities, etc. The dogs
in our program are on display at the
Pasadena PetSmart off of Fairmont
Parkway every Sunday from 11-4.
Whiskerville is very lucky to have just
acquired a WONDERFUL dog coordinator, Lee Anne Seefeldt and an assistant
dog coordinator, Gerri Kalan. Thank
goodness, as we are already really busy
with the many cats in our program.
A little about our protocol-we test each
and every cat/kitten for FeLV/FIV, eradicate their intestinal parasites, ear
mites, fleas, vaccinate, micro-chip, etc.
right away. We do not adopt to “outdoor homes”-no exception. We test
every dog for heartworms and about 1
in 3 are positive-MAJOR expense to
treat, but we find a way. EVERYONE
gets spayed/neutered. We do not euthanize unless quality of life is completely
gone and we are assured by our veterinarians that there is nothing else they
can do. Sometimes we feel that we as
human beings are selfish by trying to
prolong a life that is literally begging us

to let them go. That, in itself, tears at
our hearts every day.
I would like to take this opportunity to
thank the many people (mostly from
Florida and Philadelphia) who jumped
up and donated to our cause after seeing my ugly mug on CNN during and
after hurricane “Rita”. How I wish that
our own community would embrace us
and help us in our effort to stop the
unnecessary killing of animals just
because they were born instead of just
handing us more and more. We are not
funded and only one person in our
organization is paid. That would NOT be
me! Please visit our web site at
www.whiskerville.org if you are interested in learning more about us or donating to help us continue our work. We
always need foster homes, but understand that not everyone can make that
commitment. There are so many ways
to help besides fostering an animal.
Maybe you would consider sponsoring a

enough at that point to positively identify

detectives chose not to show him photographs of the dead woman. The end result
of their conversation with the husband was
that they now had a pretty good idea that
the body was Cynthia Woods. Now all they
had to do was to verify it.
Investigators contacted Cynthia’s dentist
in Pennsylvania where she had lived before
moving to Florida, and asked that dental
records be sent to them. But before they
got the records, they learned through family members that when her last child was

or where the body is discovered. “Here we
work’em where we find’em,” a detective
told us. Investigators from Hillsborough
County, headquartered in Tampa, spent
many hours and days over in Manatee
County conducting the investigation.
As the investigation progressed, detectives learned that the man calling himself
Michael Paul Stevens was really not related to anyone in town as he had claimed
when trying to hook up with Cynthia
Woods. In fact, he wasn’t kin to anyone in
Florida, “In talking with some of those
people it turned out that this guy Mike had
been in Florida since about November and
had been hanging around the beach community and working around there doing
odd jobs here and there,” a detective said.
“He worked around Longboat Key and
Bradenton but mostly he was a mystery
man,” he said. Detectives could find no
one who ever knew that Michael Paul
Stevens was not the mystery mans real
name. The only thing they learned is that
he had told people that he was from Texas
and that he had been in the Army at one
time. Supposedly he had been prosecuted
for rape while in the Army and was dishonorably discharged. Federal authorities
would not confirm the rape story citing
confidentiality of military records.

Gene Leroy Cunningham was managing an RV
Park in Crystal Beach and according to investigators
he befriended three minor girls who he would drive
around the park on his golf cart. During these rides
he allegedly fondled the girls. Authorities say that
Cunningham has a history of this sort of crime in
other states, however, he is not registered as a sex
offender in Texas. Anyone having information that
may assist authorities in locating and arresting his
offender is asked to contact the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office, Warrant
Division 409-766-2309 or 409-766-2322 or your nearest law enforcement

that,” he said. “We have information,

The scene was a major disaster area.
Police, firefighters and rescue personnel
worked feverishly to cut the lifeless victims from the vehicles. Three ambulances were dispatched as were three Life
Flight helicopters. Traffic was shut down
in both directions on Highway 96
between Highway 3 and FM-270. And to
make matters worse, emergency radio
frequencies locked up creating problems
for police and rescue personnel.
From the time police sent the blood
samples from Sanchez to Austin for testing and the time the results were reported back to them took several weeks.

Galveston Police Officer Loraine Franco was injured recently when her police cruiser,
responding to an emergency call, was hit by another vehicle at an intersection. Franco
was enroute to assist another officer driving east on Church Street. As she entered the

While Quinston Gamble was living rent free in a known east end Galveston
crack house, he is alleged to have enticed a 4-year old girl to commit lewd and
lascivious sex acts with him. The girl and her mother were renters in the home
at the time and the mother did not learn of the assault until after she and the
daughter moved away. Galveston Police obtained a search warrant and raided
the house in search of evidence in this case. As a consequence of the raid the
owner of the house was arrested for narcotics and firearms violations. If you
have information that may help bring about the arrest of Quniston Gamble, notify Galveston Police Juvenile Officer Holly Johnson, 409-621-3118 or 409-7973702 or call your local law enforcement agency.

doubts he was contracted to injure her
reputation, in fact we validated that he
actually attempted to by planting drugs on
her. That is our information. The motive
actually circles around this contract, this
hiring of Mike Stevens to damage or compromise her reputation,” continued the
detective. “I won’t go into the specifics of
how he was supposed to discredit her.
The story of him planting drugs may or
may not be true but we do have it on good
information that Stevens was hired to
injure her reputation.”
“That explains many things. That
explains why this man, Mike Stevens, who
already has a girlfriend, is going out on a
date with another woman. And of course
the big mystery is we don’t know what his
intentions were but we had the information that he was hired to make the date
and take her out,” he said.
“We know there was a failed attempt at
the drug planting because there had been
a failed attempt once before. We don’t
know whether he attempted to do something similar again or whether he took it to
a new level by killing her or whether he
was actually hired to kill her. That part we
don’t’ know. We just know that the reason
for his coming in contact with her in the
first place was to damage her reputation.
So they wind up going out on a date and
she never came back,” related the detective.
As detectives continued to talk with the
girlfriend, she finally told them that on the
night of the date Stevens returned to her
house and that while the two of them were
Crime Scene where the body was found
having sex he revealed to her that he had
killed Cynthia and dumped her body
where the other victims had been found
hoping to throw police off his trail. After
revealing that information to her, she said
Stevens immediately left town.
With this information, detectives
obtained a search warrant for the man’s
apartment. There they found an application for a bank account and fingerprints.
The application had a persons name in
Texas as a reference. The fingerprints
were sent to the FBI where they matched
the fingerprints of Donald Michael Santini,
the man who months earlier had robbed a
convenience store in League City, Texas.
Florida authorities obtained fingerprints
and mug shot photographs from League
City Police and that made the connection.
It was June 16th before he was finally
identified as Santini, eleven days after the
murder of Cynthia Woods. With the new
identification and evidence, first degree
murder charges were filed in Hillsborough
County, Florida.
Santini has been on the run for over 21years. Once he is arrested, it is the hope

Murphy agreed to drive back with an aim to
"jack" or rob the stranded driver. After
returning to the stranded man, Murphy and
his friends helped jump-start the stalled
vehicle. The driver, Jason Erie, provided a
small reward for their help and got into his
car. Murphy then pulled a .25 caliber semiautomatic pistol and demanded Erie's wallet. Initially Erie protested and refused to
hand over his property. As he finally began
to comply, Murphy fired a single shot from
close range into the victim's forehead and
took his wallet. The wallet was later recovered along a nearby road where Murphy
told investigators it had been discarded.
Erie was alive when rescue workers
arrived, but died a short time later.
Murphy and his friends fled through
Arkansas, to Tennessee, and finally ended
up in Arlington, Texas, where they were
apprehended by police. Murphy's girlfriend, Christina Davis, who was with him
throughout the event, testified against him.
Julius Jerome Murphy was born in
Bowie County, Texas and had only an
eighth grade education. He was 19-years
old when he committed murder. If he dies
on the schedule date of January 19, 2006
he will be 27-years old and had been on
death row for 8-years.
Jamie Elizalde, Jr., Born December
12, 1971, in Harris County, Texas
Jaime Elizalde, Jr. was paroled from
prison only eight months before he was
involved in the murder of two men outside
a Houston nightclub. He had served
almost four years of a ten year sentence
for possession of cocaine and car theft.
Dudley and three other men drove from
Tuscaloosa, Alabama to Houston to buy
cocaine from Rachel and Jose Tovar.
Instead of buying drugs, the four men tied
the Tovars and four other people in their
home with strips of sheet and demanded
money. All six victims were then shot in
the head.
Rachel Tovar and one other victim survived. The dead included Jose Tovar;
Rachel's son, Farnak Farias, and daughter-in-law, Jessica Quinones; and a neighbor, Audrey Brown.å
Marion Butler Dudley was 20 years old
when he committed murder. If he is executed as scheduled he will be 34-years old
and will have spent 14-years on death row.
On November 1, 1994, Elizalde was at a
nightclub with his father when the two men
got into a confrontation with Juan
Guajardo and Marcos Vasquez. Four days
later, the father and son returned to the
bar and sat on opposite sides of the room.
Jaime Elizalde, Sr. gestured to the two
men to follow him outside of the El Lugar
bar, where Elizalde Jr. was waiting for
them. He pulled a gun and shot both men
to death. A witness testified that from the
bar he saw Guajardo as he was shot.
Elizalde was arrested a few months later in
a drug bust.
While in prison Elizalde had been a
leader of the Mexican Mafia, a dangerous
prison gang.
Prosecutor Terrance
Windham told the jury that Elizalde had
stabbed someone in prison and assaulted
guards. After convicting Elizalde for capital murder, in less than one hour the jury
decided that Elizalde, Jr. would be a threat
to society and sent him to death row for
the two slayings. After the judge read the
sentence, the defendant smiled and patted
one of his attorneys on the back.
Elizalde's father is thought to be hiding in
Mexico.
Jamie Elizalde, Jr., was 23-years old
when he committed murder. If he is executed as scheduled he will be 35-years old
and will have been on death row over eight
years.

When a man attempted to siphon gasoline from a
motor home parked on a Seattle street, he got much
more than he bargained for. Police arrived at the
scene to find an ill man curled up next to a motor
home trying to steal gasoline and plugged his hose
into the motor home’s sewage tank by mistake. The
owner of the vehicle declined to press charges, saying that it was the best laugh he’d ever had.
A woman was reporting her car as stolen, and
mentioned that there was a car phone in it. The
policeman taking the report called the phone and
told the guy that answered that he had read the ad
in the newspaper and wanted to buy the car. They
arranged to meet, and the thief was arrested.
45 year-old Amy Brasher was arrested in San
Antonio, Texas, after a mechanic reported to police
that 18 packages of marijuana were packed in the
engine compartment of the car which she had
brought to the mechanic for an oil change.
According to police, Brasher later said that she didn’t realize that the mechanic would have to raise the
hood to change the oil.
David Posman, 33, was arrested recently in
Providence, R.I. after allegedly knocking out an
armored car driver and stealing the closest four bags
of money. It turned out they contained $800 in PENNIES, weighed 30 pounds each, and slowed him to
a stagger during his getaway so that police officers
easily jumped him from behind.

Dear Cap’n Bob:
Just a short note to let you know how much we appreciate your service. It is such a relief to have a
reliable man on the spot who can be called on short notice to handle the various situations that crop
up unexpectedly. I shudder to think at the time I would have to expend travelling down there were it
not for you. Kind regards,
