HEADSHRINKA
Horse & Groom Derby.
/4/2016
Saturday night at the Horse &
Groom for some live music and
playing that night are the well
travelled HEADSHRINKA with Mik
Whiting on vocals + keyboard, Andy
Farmer on Guitar, Kev Treanor on
Guitar, Stu Brown on Bass and Tim
Tomlinson on Drums. A quick sound
check and the place is filling up
nicely so straight in to the first track
of the night RIFF RAFF done
superbly with Mik's voice belting out
the track and getting the place going
for more to come... 'Tie your
mother Down', 'Working Man' 'Band
on the Run' 'Learn to fly', 'Closer to
the heart', 'Heeartbreaker', a Led
Zep medley Stairway to Heaven'
then 'The Trooper, 'Enter Sandman',
'Jean Genie', 'One Vision', 'Rock n
Roll' and many many more tracks
that night I stopped counting after
the 26th track with a stand out
moment when Kev Treanor took on
the task of the guitar solo on
'Stairway to Heaven', a tough task
but not for Mr Treanor, with guitar
slung low and head down, If you half
closed your eyes you could have
believed Mr Page was there himself
with many people videoing it on
their phones and me included.

THUNDEROUS JONES
He got some new fans that night
who still haven't stopped talking
about the great style and ability he
has achieved over many years of
playing in bands. So when you go
and see him go and have a word
with him he will be only too
pleased to explain all of his
experiences with you. So all to
soon time has run out again. So
it's time for the band to say good
night and see you all again soon at
a live music venue near you.
Keep music live and support live
music venues and pubs and drink
more beer.
The Flowerpot Derby.

STEEL THREADS
The Flowerpot
Sunday Session 27/3/2016
Neil, Laura and Tracey kicked in
with Hendrix 'All Along the
Watchtower' from the start the
crowd were loving it, a packed
house and I mean packed,
everyone whooped and hollered
sang and clapped along to songs
by Bowie, led Zepp, Motorhead
and the Levellers, Dubliners plus 3
of their own songs, for me it really
doesn't get any better than Steel
Threads, This made a real change
for me, lovin' the Blues sessions
and Steel Threads folky Rock
afternoon was sheer delight.
Mick Moonshine.
Tonight it's a four piece, Liam Coffey
Vocals, Mike Skid Wroe Guitar,
Jonny Dyke Keyboards, Lauren
Greaves Snare/ box (Captain) and
they're playing two great sets, a few
of their own numbers and some
classic tracks, now amongst all these
great numbers, one stopped the
Moonshine crew dead in its tracks
Solomon Burke. bloody hell they
nailed it. I've never heard it played as
good as this Liam's vocals just oozed
blues and soul absolutely brilliant.
Dust Bowl Bonamassa, another
track that just couldn't be done any
better, brilliant keyboards. The
second set included Liam's stunning
vocals on Simple Man my favourite
track of the night. The captain
(Lauren) at the back sure does run a
tight ship, so raise your hats to
Thunderous Jones, a cut above the
rest, destined for bigger things... now
once more raise your hat to the two
sound guys (Ryan and Tom) who did
a excellent job on the sound desk.
Mick Moonshine.
MIKE SKID WROE will be doing
two sets at The Americana &
Car meet at The Smithfield

Ey yup! Blimey it’s been a while since I have
ventured to offer any musical wisdom to these
pages yet I thought a stint to derby was on the
horizon and hurriedly packed up my bags and
headed to the sunset (well kind of...). After a dismal
failed trip to Gloucester to watch, quite possibly the
worst band I have ever had the misfortune to
witness, I sharply remembered the horse and
Groom back up this neck of woods were hosting a
beer and music festival there quite literally was no
holding me back. Having been a newbie to this
particular establishment I quickly found my way to
the beer garage sampling the groovy looking
voodoo design one (apologies as I didn’t get the
maker name).
Gracing the stage for the nights entertainment were
Southbound, armed with a musical bag full of tricks,
with styles flirting in between Bluegrass, Sixties and
a healthy dose of rock and roll classics. The
fivesome went some way to restoring my faith with
a delicious medley of hits including the quirky cover
of Kirsty MacColl- 'There's a guy works down the
fish shop swears he’s Elvis' from way back 1981.
My only regret being the earlier wasted trip,
meaning I missed a good chunk of Southbound's
set yet their infectious upbeat style had me toe
tapping and jigging with a smile on my face.
The three day fest didn’t end there either, with Lulu
Falemara, Harriet, John MacDonald Mackenzie and
Ford Jones Dixieland Jazz band, amongst others
providing the audible backdrop, a perfect
accompaniment to any beer festival. A stern word
of advice as we part, don’t make the same mistake
I did, keep it local and keep it live!, till next time-
lulu.

MOONSHINE MAGAZINE
Russ Ballard Band
The Flowerpot 12/03/16
Russ Ballard’s music career began in
the 60s in bands such as Unit 4 plus
2 through to Argent and as an in
demand songwriter and solo artist he
is keeping busy and is still writing
new music. The artists who have
recorded Ballard’s songs are varied
such as Freda from ABBA, Santana,
Hot Chocolate, Rainbow, Kiss and
many others.
The gig tonight was a rare intimate
show for Ballard. He was
determined to have fun and wanted
the audience to party.
Russ’s enthusiasm was certainly
very infectious.
Starting off with Rene, Stand In My
Shoes (It’s My Life), the magnificent
Dream On and Liar, the set was packed
full of hits. Can’t Hear You No More and
Fire Still Burns were up next and Ballard
talked about one of his first bands Unit 2
plus 4 with drummer Bob Henrit and
played a bit of Concrete and Clay before
playing a medley of So You Win
Again/Something’s Goin In/New York
Groove.
Russ introduced excellent new song
Time Machine with an anecdote about
venturing into the world of digital music
and downloading, which he is still getting
his head round. Ballard encouraged the
crowd to sing along during Voices, an
extended Hold Your Head Up featuring
his trademark silver coloured Strat and I
Don’t Believe In Miracles. A fan shouted
for Winning a song that Santana
recorded and Russ duly obliged and
even said that the band had not
rehearsed it, you couldn’t tell! The set
ended with the classic God Gave Rock N
Roll To You.
Not wanting the gig to finish the fans
shouted for more. The band returned
and played the excellent Since You’ve
Been Gone introduced as an Irish jig
then another fan request It’s Too Late
before ending the night with a flawless
cover of Rock N Roll classic Little
Queenie.
Having been so used to hearing these
songs as played by other musicians it
was great to hear them played as they
were originally intended by the man who
wrote them and he also gave a master
class in the art of performing live.

Bagthorpe Delta Americana & Country Music Awards.
Dixies Arms, Bagthorpe, Notts, Sunday 3rd April 2016.
I moseyed over the border, to the
inaugural Bagthorpe Delta
American & Country Music Awards,
the BAMCA's, locally known as the
“Mi Ducky” as the award is a little
yellow duck.
This
green and
fertile idyll
is full of
folklore
and
superstitio
ns, the
places
and imagery from these parts
influenced the great writers DH
Lawrence and Lord Byron, in more
recent times many great musicians
and artisans have flourished here,
the area is fast becoming known as
“New Nashville”, this is why we
have come to the Dixies Arms
salon to celebrate this high artistry.
Mystery Band + Performance.
The mystery band was a local
favourite from the Delta, the in
demand, Flint, 'More & Byrne, 3 first
rate guitarists and great vocal
harmonisers, heard to great effect on
songs such as, Teach your Children
(Crosby, Stills & Nash) and Horse
with no name (America), a great first
set. See pic p15

Andy Flint of Flint Guitars. Another
close run award, Flints beautiful had

Best Americana Duo +
Performance.
Daniel Wright & Stevie-Leigh
Goodison.
This duo are the best in this genre
since June Carter and Johnny Cash,
hear their stunning vocal interplay on
DH Lawrence & the Vaudeville Skiffle
Show and the folkgrass band The Most
Ugly Child. Wright and Goodison in
their set sang 3 songs from the
upcoming new album from The Most
Ugly Child, due for realise late 2016,
sounds like it will be a great album by
the songs we heard.
Radio Personality of the Year.
Lucas Jackson. Jackson was up
against some tough competition in the
form of Bob Harris and his Radio2
country music show, but Jacksons
show the Country Retreat took the
prize, broadcast 12-2pm Sundays at
internet radio station, Acacia Radio or
1287AM, check it out.
The Best Open Mic.
Andy “Pink” White & the D.A.M.N.
The Dixies Arms open mic night is the
place to hear all the great and up and
coming Delta musicians play, “Pink
was unable to pick his award up, Horse

his cut out head on a stick picked up
the award, much to the crowds
amusement, last Thursday of the
month is open mic, check it out

The Rhinestone Cowboy Award
+ Manager of the Year.
“Cowboy” Steve Chase & “Jimbo”.
With his dazzling cowboy gear on,
there was only going to be one
winner, Chase treated us to a couple
of great country songs, then stepped
aside to let his manager “Jimbo” pick
up his award, which does not tell the
whole story, he is more than
“Cowboys manager, he's his Road
Warrior, Companion, Mr Fix-it, Fetchit, Carry-it, and real nice guy, a great
double act.

The Out Of Towner Award +
Performance.
Matt Hill “Quite Loner”. Originally
from the delta, but now residing at

with thirty minuet set of classic country
covers, accompanied by Daniel Wright
(guitar), Bill Kerry III (Banjo) and Al
Rate (Harp), some of the great songs
performed included, Streets of

was surprised by Stevie-Leigh Goodison, who
handed him a large wooden duck and a ”This is
your life” style book, of his life in music.
Carey and his 4 piece King of Rome sang a trio of
classic country songs, with his trademark tale of
how the song came about, I did like his story about
Sin City by the Flying Burritto Brothers, it was not
infact about L.A., but Ilkeston, where the band spent
time in the 70s, classic.

Elizabeth Johnson & Rob Balmer
Elizabeth Johnson (Lil to her friends) and Rob
Balmer have teamed up together to take The
Greyhound on and return it to its former glory.
Both believe in Paul's dream for the venue and
don't want to see it end up just a distant memory.
THE STORY SO FAR...
Back in 2006 Paul Slater took on The Greyhound with
the intention of turning it into a great live music venue.
He had a huge task turning this once run down pub
into the warm, friendly, fun-packed entertainment
venue that it became known for in such a short time. In
2008 Robert Balmer joined the team to help Paul with
his dream. Known as a bit of a Jack of all trades (plus
his knowledge of bands and photography skills),
Robert set about upgrading the PA and lighting as well
as creating both the pub Facebook page and website
as it's seen today.
We are pleased to announce that Rob and Lil have
been successful with their talks with the brewery and
finally took over the pub on Monday 11th April. The
grand re-opening was on Friday 15th April at 6pm.
