OUR BACKGROUND
SMASH! 2012
Saturday, July 14, 2012
Sydney Convention Centre
SMASH! Sydney Manga and Anime Show
is a Japanese popular culture convention
held every year in mid-winter.
We are SMASH Inc, a non-profit organisation
that plans and produces each event. We are a
team of young Australians that come together
to create a space that celebrates the creativity
of professional and amateur creators.
From humble beginnings in 2007, we have
grown to one of the largest events of its kind
in Australia.
We believe it's possible to combine hard work
with irreverence. We think young people
working together can achieve great things. We
run on good vibes and instant ramen.
SMASH! is a fun, popular, affordable and
successful event that encourages art, creativity,
and community involvement.

to meet their idols. We work hard each year to bring to Australia overseas
guests that will make our event unique.

philosophy is that lower prices means a larger audience and better business
for everyone.

VENUE
The Sydney Convention Centre is Sydney's
premier event venue. With amazing views
of Darling Harbour and the city, it doesn't
get more spectacular than this.
 2500m2 Exhibition Hall
This grand, purpose built hall is perfect for
exhibitors and events alike. With flat-floor loading
access straight to the loading dock, professional
rigging and infrastructure, it's everything you'd
expect of a venue of this calibre.
 3500 Seat Auditorium
The Bayside Auditorium is simply the best
location for big stage events and provides the
perfect space for our costume competition,
guests' presentations and general entertainment
activities.
 Ease of Access
Darling Harbour is well served no matter how you
intend to arrive. A short walk from the city centre
makes it easy for students and the Convention
Centre car park means families don't have to
forego safety and convenience to be part of
SMASH!
 Bayside Gallery
Stunning harbour views aren't all this room has
to offer. Situated on the first floor and above the
Bayside Lounge restaurant, the Gallery can be
fully partitioned into two halves for a variety of
uses. Leading out on to a balcony, it's perfect for
catering events or for those who just want to sit
back and admire the view.
 Special Function Rooms
SMASH! will never be short of screening, panel and
workshop spaces with these six multi-purpose
function rooms. Each room is fully audio-visual
capable and seats between 40-200 people in a
classroom or theatre setup.
G U E ST S
SMASH! has been leading the way in guests appearances
ever since 2008. We were the first convention to bring a
Japanese voice actor to Australia and ensuring our guests
are of the highest calibre is central to our mission to celebrate
creativity.
Directors
Directors are the creators most responsible for the production of a film or
television series. SMASH! is proud to have brought one of Japan's most
beloved animation directors, Shinichi Watanabe (Excel Saga) to Sydney
in 2011 following on from Matt Greenfield (Neon Genesis Evangelion),
arguably one of the West's most important and influential evangelists for
Japanese animation.
Voice Actors
It is voice actors that bring our favourite characters to life. Fans were
ecstatic to meet Yuko Miyamura (best known for her portrayal of
Asuka Sohryu, Neon Genesis Evangelion) to Sydney in 2010. Ms Miyamura
was joined by her counterpart in the English-language recording of
Evangelion, Tiffany Grant in the same year. And SMASH! can never
forget its first ever international guest, Hidenobu Kiuchi (Dr. Kenzo
Tenma, Monster, Ren Honjo, Nana, and Hei, Darker than Black).
Composers
Often it is the music accompanying a movie or video game that stays
with you long after you have finished watching. In 2011, SMASH! brought
its first composers, Hiroki Kikuta and Kenji Ito (Final Fantasy, SaGa and
Secret of Mana), to Australia as part of a combined event with musical
collective Eminence.
Guest Artists
In our dedication to creative content SMASH! has brought over a number
of international artists, including fan-favourite comic artists Shaun
Healey and Mikiko Ponczeck, professional Hong Kong illustrator
Cuson Lo, Malaysian illustrator, teacher and The One Academy graduate
Tan Kit Mun, and Brisbane comic artist Alexandra Szweryn.

GET INVOLVED
 Guest Panels
Our guests will participate in a number of panels
over the course of the event and provide fans
with a unique opportunity to interact directly
with the creators of beloved pieces of art and
entertainment.
 Costume Competition
A phenomenon that began with conventions
in Japan, costume competitions involve fans
dressing up as their favourite characters from
anime, manga and video games. A highlight of
the day, the cosplay competition is always wellattended by participants and audience alike.
 Art Panels
The continued popularity of comics and animation
drawn in the Japanese style have attracted the
interest of veterans and beginners alike. SMASH!
helps bring together award-winning artists to
explain techniques, provide advice and perform
demonstrations for aspiring artists of all ages.
 Workshops
SMASH! has a history of running innovative
workshops that appeal to the serious and casual
fan alike. In 2009, SMASH! began a successful
partnership with Australia's leading model retailer
and distributor, Hobbyco in which hundreds
of attendees have been introduced to model
construction for the first time. In 2012 we will build
on that even further.
 Gaming Competitions
Japan is as famous for its video games as it is for
its animation and comics. SMASH! 2011 will run a
variety of video game competitions to offer fans
of Japanese pop culture a chance to demonstrate
their skill and hard work.
 Karaoke Competition
What could be more Japanese than karaoke? Our
karaoke competition is always a huge crowdpleaser.
SMASH! is the result of the hard work of
dozens of people, from our management
committee to our staff to those working
with all of our partners.
Get in touch with us to learn how you can
