Volume 33 Issue 3 March 2013 www.cosmoindustries.com ROUGHRIDER JOINS COSMO TEAM Ken Gryschuk Manager of Business Development and Community Relations There may be a lot of #53 jerseys worn by the participants as Saskatchewan Roughriders’ offensive lineman Patrick ‘Paddy’ Neufeld has chosen to adopt Cosmo as a community commitment. The pictures of his tour at Cosmo have been turned into a video and is available for viewing on Facebook. It’s a good thing that offensive linemen are used to bending as Paddy often had to lower his 6’ 6” frame to have his picture taken with participants. There wasn’t enough time to get through the entire building but he promised to return and bring a few of his Green and White wearing friends for an autograph session (we’ll let you know when). As his first endeavor with Cosmo, Paddy is entering a team in the Cosmo BULLa-Thon with Pat and Cristy to help raise funds for renovations to Cosmo and to support the Top of the Rock fund. He’ll be challenging others to enter a team as well or to donate to this great cause. If you haven’t entered a team yet or made a donation, make sure you take up Paddy’s challenge. We are sure that Paddy will have his own cheering section since attending Rider games is a favourite outing for participants sponsored by the Top of the Rock. A big thanks to Paddy for choosing Cosmo. We are sure that this will be the start of a long and rewarding relationship. HAVE YOU REGISTERED? Chantal Gosselin TeleMiracle Committee On Sunday March 3rd, Chantal Gosselin, Jenna Johnson, Todd Phillips and Angie Weisner proudly presented a total donation of $2,857.38 to TeleMiracle 37 live on television at TCU Place. Cosmo fundraised through 50/50 draws, raffle baskets, hockey pools, selling Helping Hands, collecting pennies and hosting a Cake Auction. A few days prior to the big presentation on television, Cosmo had the pleasure to welcome Beverly Mahood, Bob McGrath, Tom Cross MAGIC 98.3 FM HAS HEART When she appeared on Telemiracle, Angie Weisner was asked why she chose ‘What About Love’ by Heart to sing on the show. She said it was because she had heard it on 98.3 fm. Steve Chisholm of Magic 98.3 was at home watching Telemiracle and when he heard that, he decided to surprise Angie with a gift in thanks for the ‘shout out’. He came to Cosmo with two tickets to see Heart in concert. Angie was certainly surprised and she absolutely loved the concert. Steve surprising Angie was a heartwarming moment and it’s worth viewing on Cosmopolitan Industries’ facebook page. We certainly are appreciative that Steve was so thoughtful. It is something that Angie will cherish. The Cosmo Communicator (Beverly’s Manager) and Kelly Watson from TeleMiracle. Our delegates were a huge hit and signed autographs like celebrities as they crossed our halls! Along the way, Beverly Mahood and Angie Weisner shared a very special moment as they sang a duet together. Ken Gryschuk was quick to fetch his video recorder and was able to capture this moment. The video was such a huge hit on Facebook and has been viewed over 77,607 times! After hearing Angie’s amazing voice, Beverly encouraged Angie to attend TeleMiracle 37 when Cosmo presented the cheque. Angie and Beverly Mahood performed “What is Love” for a second time around. For those who haven’t viewed the video of Angie performing, be sure to ‘Like’ Cosmopolitan Industries on Facebook and check it out! A huge thank you to those who supported TeleMiracle 37! We look forward to having your continuous support and surpassing last year’s totals. IT’S THE ISLAND WAY! Maegen Urdal Recreation Coordinator Cosmo’s annual winter carnival was another great event! This year’s theme was Cosmo on vacation and what a fun vacation it was! There was a big bingo game, Country 2 Band, movies and participants enjoyed dancing to the music of LadyHawke in the gym. The big hit of the afternoon was our ice cream sundaes with caramel and chocolate sauce! Thank you to everyone who helped decorate, supervise and all the volunteers we had assisting in the building. We are all looking forward to our next event day! Page 3 The Cosmo Communicator HURRY, HURRY HARD! Maegen Urdal Recreation Coordinator February 28th Cosmo had the opportunity to experience curling. Everyone had a blast cheering each other on and received a certificate MULTI-UNIT RESIDENTIAL RECYCLING The public consultations for a universal recycling program for MultiUnit Residences such as apartment blocks and condominium complexes were held in March. The city of Saskatoon will be creating a report for Cosmo based on the input from the public. Cosmo has also been involved directly with stakeholder organizations. Upon receiving the report and with incorporating the information provided by stakeholders, Cosmo will craft a proposal for the city administration for the creation of the Multi-Unit Residential Recycling (MURR) program. This proposal will be presented to administration by the end of April and it should go before City Council sometime in May. The program itself won’t start until 2014. The exercise room has become very popular and that’s great since exercise is so beneficial to health. Unfortunately there was only so much that could be done with the equipment that had been purchased. We needed more equipment to match the growing demand. Kinsmen Telemiracle responded to this need with a donation of $15,000 to expand the exercise options for participants. There will be an official opening when we put in the new equipment. In funding the equipment, the Kinsmen solved two problems for Cosmo 1) we are now able to expand the physical fitness program and 2) we now have a name for the exercise room. In thanks, it will be called the Kinsmen Telemiracle Fitness Room. When you come to visit at our Open House on May 3rd, make sure that you get a peek. The room is just off the gym featuring big windows and happily exercising participants. In April, Cosmo will be celebrating National Volunteer Appreciation Week as a thank you to all of the volunteers who have contributed their time with us. Because of these people, we are helping to enrich life experiences for adults with intellectual disabilities. We will dedicate a section of the April Cosmo Communicator to volunteers. “Volunteers do not necessarily have the time; they simply have the heart.” – Elizabeth Andrew VOLUNTEERS WANTED Cosmo is looking for volunteers to help with Recreational Outings. Joe was born in Cupar, Saskatchewan and grew up on the family farm near Grenfell with his parents, brothers and sisters. Joe began his career with Cosmopolitan Industries in July 1972. During his time with Cosmo, he worked in the Contracts Division, Seniors and since his retirement in September 2002, he joined the Cosmo Day Program at Elmwood full time. Joe was an enthusiastic and valued worker, more often happy than not, always grateful, and possessed a wonderful sense of humour. Joe had a love of music; he would join in on sing-along, was part of the Buckaroos and looked forward to the yearly Christmas carols. Many songs were a favourite of Joe’s and those who knew him; Wild Irish Rose, Wakatonka, and When Irish Eyes were Smiling. These are the three that were often requested. We will miss your conversations, smiles, songs, stories and of course wit. Joe will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by all of us at Cosmo. volunteers@cosmoindustries.com HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO EVERYONE WHO CELEBRATED IN FEBRUARY! DO YOU HAVE UNOPENED BEAUTY SUPPLIES?
