countries - Brazil, Portugal, Angola
Mozambique, Cabo Verde, and others Portuguese is the 5th most spoken
language in the world. The Minor in
Portuguese is an excellent complement
for SC students who are majoring in
Spanish or International Business, or
any subject with a global reach in such
fields as Humanities, Social Sciences,
Business, Health, Education, etc. "

From basic language courses to advanced study of Luso-Brazilian literature and film, the
Portuguese program at the University of South Carolina offers an array of classes that provide an
engaging experience with both the language and cultures of the Lusophone world! "

Some of our advanced courses include:
Portuguese Summer Language
Institute
Offered during Summer Session F,
students can earn either 6 or 12
credits in Portuguese by successfully
completing either or both of PORT
130 and PORT 230 in this intensive
summer program (5 days per week, 6
hrs per day). Students can enroll in
the first month of the course (PORT
130 - 6 credits) and fulfill the language
requirement in Portuguese. Students
can also enroll in the second month of
the course (PORT 230 - 6 credits) and
earn credit towards the minor in
Portuguese. Students who
successfully complete PORT 130 will
be able to enroll in PORT 201 in the
Fall. Students who successfully
complete PORT 230 will be eligible to
enroll in PORT 309 in the Fall. "
PORT 299: ACCE LE RAT E D PORT UGUES E FOR
SPEAKERS OF SPANISH
Portuguese 299 is an intensive Portuguese course for
Spanish speakers, utilizing the similarities between both
languages to achieve an intermediate level of Portuguese
in one semester. Through conversation activities, reading
and writing assignments, and engagement with music
and film, students will quickly develop their Portuguese
language skills in an interactive classroom setting.
PORT 309/310: ADVAN CE D CON VERS AT ION
A N D CO M P O S I T I O N
These are advanced language courses focused on
developing writing and speaking skills in Portuguese
while refining advanced grammar usage in daily
conversation. Students engage with both written texts
and films, and build their knowledge of Luso-Brazilian
cultures through classroom discussion, debate, and
writing assignments in Portuguese.
PORT 375/398: S PEC IAL TOPI CS IN LUSOBR AZ ILIAN CULT URE
These advanced courses provide students with the
opportunity to critically engage various aspects of LusoBrazilian cultural production while improving their abilities to
speak and write at an advanced-level in Portuguese. Recent
courses have dealt with popular music, literature, film,
cultural politics, and social critique in Brazil.
BATE PAPO PORTUGUESE CONVERSATION GROUP
Come join our Bate Papo Portuguese conversation
group, which meets every other week throughout the
semester. Bate Papo is a great way to practice your
Portuguese skills outside of the classroom, meet
fellow students, and have the opportunity to speak
with Portuguese speakers from the community!
