Live info at www.jaienvie.de 6 7 19TH-CENTURY PATH 1 | SOCIÉTÉ INDUSTRIELLE HOUSE Built between 1827 and 1829, this hotel was given to the Industrial Society by Nicolas Koechlin. It was originally used as the chamber of commerce and stock exchange. 2 | ARCADES IN THE NOUVEAU QUARTIER 1827-1829. Formerly known as the Charles X quarter, this was the first urban area built outside the medieval city walls. Designed by Stotz and Fries. 4 | MANTZ VILLA This villa was constructed in around 1845 for the family whose name it bears. Built in the Palladian style it was originally situated in the garden district. 3 | UPPER MIDDLE CLASS HOUSE Dating from 1850, this manor house made the transition between the Nouveau Quartier and the rapidly-developing sector of La Sinne. 5 | RISLER VILLA Built in around 1840, this villa housed the Risler family. It was also a studio for the architect François Spoery. Live info at www.jaienvie.de 8 9 19TH-CENTURY PATH 9 | SCHOFF VILLA 6 | TRADING HOUSE Dating from 1850, this was the first headquarters for the Sté Edouard Vancher & Cie after the company moved from Porte du Miroir, then a cotton trading firm. 7 | THIERRY-MIEG HOUSE This house was acquired by the chemist Mathieu Thierry-Mieg in 1818. At that time it was a model farm and was substantially remodelled at the end of the 19th century. 8 | VAUCHER-LACROIX VILLA This villa was built in 1867 for the merchant and banker Edouard Vaucher by the architect De Rutté. Built in 1903 for the industrialist Schoff according to designs by Charles Schulé, this is a typical late 19th-century private mansion. 12 | UPPER MIDDLE CLASS BUILDING Situated close to the former covered market, the ground floor of this building dating from 1870 was used for commercial purposes. The painter Jean-Jacques Henner (1829-1905) owned a studio here. 10 | FORMER GROSHEINTZ AND HARTMANN CLOTH WEAVING WORKS Founded in 1806, this textile factory was the first major manufacturer of woven cotton in the city. It would cease operations in 1836. 11 | CHURCH OF SAINT-STEPHEN Built between 1855 and 1860, this was the first Catholic church built in Mulhouse after the Reformation in France. Constructed in a neo-Gothic style according to designs by Jean-Baptiste Schacre. 13 | STEINBACH PARK Formerly a private park attached to Maison Steinbach (now the Musée des Beaux-Arts). Situated between the rivers of Mittelbach (filled in 1864-1865) and Sinne (covered between 1859 and 1866). 14 | FORMER BANQUE DE MULHOUSE Founded in 1872, the Bank of Mulhouse moved to the Rue de la Sinne in 1882-1883. It was one of the major banking establishments in the late 19th century. 16 | MIDDLE- CLASS HOUSE 1847. Originally built at the end of a road overlooking the River Sinne, which was only covered and converted into a road between 1859 and 1866. 18 | BANQUE D’ALSACE ET DE LORRAINE Bank built on one level in 1891 according to designs by Ernest Duvillard. The first floor (1926-1927) was designed by the architect Charles Schulé. 19 | FORMER HÔTEL DE PARIS 15 | GANGLOFF BUILDING (NOW THE HÔTEL DU PARC) Built in 1905-1906 for Henri Gangloff according to designs by Louis Schwartz. The façade is decorated with an allegory that recalls its original function as an art gallery, bookshop and antique shop. It was converted into a hotel in 1920. 17 | MUNICIPAL THEATRE Owned by Daniel Roth, this hotel dating from 1838 was the largest in the city along with the former Hôtel Central (now demolished). Its gardens extended as far as Square Steinbach. Closed in 1859. Built in 1867 according to designs by De Rutté and enlarged in 1904 and 1911. The building features an avant-corps and arcades. It was completely renovated in 1634 and has been a pharmacy since 1649. 2 | JEAN-HENRI LAMBERT’S NATIVE HOUSE Born in this house in 1725, Lambert was one of the most famous scholars of his time. He invented the map projection that bears his name as well as a mathematical theorem. 7 | THE TOWNHALL This building dates from 1552. It was built on the site of the former Hôtel de Ville erected in 1431, which was destroyed by fire. 3 | FORMER PRESBYTERY 16th century: Presbytery for the former Church of Saint Étienne until the Reformation in France (1528). Latin school from 1550 to the end of the 18th century, college, then a school. 5 | MIEG HOUSE 16th century: This site can be traced back to 1418. The house acquired its current appearance in around 1560. Occupied by the Mieg family from 1679 to 1840. 8 | STEINBACH HOUSE MANSION Private mansion. Built by the manufacturer VETTER in 1788. Owned by the Steinbach family until the 19th century. 6 | TAILORS’ GUILDHALL 4 | SAINT STEPHEN’S PROTESTANT CHURCH 1866: Built on the site of the former 12th-century church. The 14th-century stained glass windows are some of the most beautiful in the Upper Rhine. This building dates from 1564 and was extensively renovated in the 19th and 20th centuries. The Cooperation of Tailors was the most important guild in Mulhouse before the meeting of 1798. 9 | HOFER MIEG HOUSE House built in around 1780 on the site of the enclosure of the Teutonic Knights. Live info at www.jaienvie.de 12 13 HISTORIC MULHOUSE PATH 10 | WINE GROWERS’ GUILDHALL 12 | 18TH-CENTURY MANUFACTURING PLANT 15 | SAINT JOHN’S CHAPEL 13 | 18TH-CENTURY HOUSE 16 | LIBRARY Last quarter of the 18th century. Built on the site of the Noble Court of the Fritschmanns of Illzach. The Order of Saint John commissioned this chapel in the 13th century (later restructured). At the time the cemetery was surrounded by vines and orchards… 16th-century façade. House for the Corporation of Winemakers. Vines were one of the city’s most valuable assets until the 18th century. House built between 1770 and 1780. Constructed on the site of the enclosure of the Knights of Saint John. 11 | PASSAGE OF THE AUGUSTINIAN FRIARS Site of the former Augustinian monastery. A hospital was installed here from 1529 to 1624. The passage was created in 1763 after the demolition of the monastery. 14 | PAUL CURIE’S HOUSE House built in around 1800. The grandfather of the famous physician lived in the house from 1825 to 1833. Late 18th-century manor house. The calico printing workshops were located opposite in the 14th-century Noble Court of Thierstein (now demolished). 17 | 18TH-CENTURY MANSION House built in around 1760. First known example of a house for calico workers in Mulhouse. 18 | CHAINS COURT 23 | VOGEL HOUSE Noble Court of Tagolsheim. 16th-century façade. Converted into a factory in 1783. The designation “Kettenhof” dates from this period. Private mansion of the financier Vogel in around 1780. Built on the site of the first hospital in the city. 21 | SAINT MARY’S CHURCH 19 | SCHLOESSLE Built in 1796. House used for manufacturing and residential purposes. 20 | LORRAINE COURT 18th-century construction on the site of the Noble Court of Wunnenberg. The name of the house comes from its 18th-century owners. This church dates from the 13th century and was built by the Franciscans. Abandoned during the Reformation in France, then turned into a communal warehouse, it was returned to the Catholic Church in 1812. 22 | LOEWENFELS HOUSE Built between 1764 and 1770, this was the private mansion of the financier Feer. Its name comes from the interpretation of the family arms of the owner and his wife. Built on the site of an old Catholic church dating from the 12th Century, it inherited the magnificent stainedglass windows, produced around 1350. Unique in France, Saint-Etienne has a gallery that lets you get close to the stained glass windows. It was built between 1020 and 1040 by Count Rodolphe of Altenbourg, one of the founders of the Habsbourg dynasty. The church was consecrated in 1049 by Pope Leon IX. Fritz Schlumpf decided to set up his fabulous collection of 97 different makes, with many prestigious models having been added since its opening, in a former woolen mill of Mulhouse. Then come the classical centuries, represented by Brueghel, Boucher and Teniers. The 19th century is the strong point of the collections, with Boudin, Jongking, Géricault, Courbet and Bouguereau. Alsatian artists are also well represented, in particular Jean-Jacques Henner, who has a room dedicated to his work. Live info at www.jaienvie.de 22 23 GUIDED TOURS AND GREETERS GUIDED TOURS Mulhouse, a city of Art and History, reveals itself through guided tours on: its historical centre, the beginning of industrialisation, its workers’ housing and the DMC factory, the Rebberg neighbourhood, its painted walls. This summer, two new guided tours will be available: one on nature and the other on the links between Mulhouse and Switzerland. Two dramatized visits will also allow you to discover the history and heritage of Mulhouse in a different way.
