July / August 2013 - Hopewell United Methodist Church
Hopewell Happenings
From the Pastor ...
Dear Friends,
Bruce Emmert, the pastor of First United Methodist Church of Topeka, Kansas, tells the following story
that occurred 13 years ago this summer at the Sydney Olympic Games:
One of the most touching moments in the Sydney Olympics was when Eric "The Swimmer"
Moussambani of Equatorial Guinea swam in the 100-meter free style qualifying heat. The 22-yearold African had only learned to swim last January, had only practiced in a 20-meter pool without
lane markers, and had never raced more than 50 meters. By special invitation of the International
Olympic Committee, under a special program that permits poorer countries to participate even
though their athletes don’t meet customary standards, he had been entered in the 100-meter
men’s freestyle.
When the other two swimmers in his heat were disqualified because of false starts, Moussambani
was forced to swim alone. Eric Moussambani was, to use the words of an Associated Press story
about his race, "charmingly inept." He never put his head under the water’s surface and flailed
wildly to stay afloat. With ten meters left to the wall, he virtually came to a stop. Some spectators
thought he might drown! Even though his time was over a minute slower than what qualified for
the next level of competition, the capacity crowd at the Olympic Aquatic Center stood to their feet
and cheered the swimmer on. After what seemed like an eternity, the African reached the wall and
hung on for dear life. When he had caught his breath and regained his composure, the Frenchspeaking Moussambani said through an interpreter, "I want to send hugs and kisses to the crowd.
It was their cheering that kept me going!"
I love the quote, "It was their cheering that kept me going!" As a part of the body of Christ we are called to
cheer one another on and to shoulder one another's burdens. We are called to provide the
encouragement that keeps one another going. Kristi and I want to "send hugs and kisses" to each of you
for the "cheering that kept (us) going" during the passing of Kristi's mom. Thank you for the food and
cards, for your presence and prayers, and for your hugs and kisses. Thank you for being the body of
Christ!
As we continue being the body of Christ together I pray that each of us will keep our eyes and hearts
open to those around us who are also in need of some "cheering" from the crowd: the members of
Hopewell who are no longer able to leave their homes to worship with their church family, our members
who are residents in the local nursing homes, the children at Hopewell Elementary School, our neighbors
who need a ride to church on Sunday morning, the people we pass each and every day who are in deep
need of hugs, kisses and a little cheering on from the Body of Christ.

Ken

United Methodist Women (UMW) News
The theme for Spiritual Growth Retreat at Lake Junaluska was Faithful Living. The music,
scripture, and message held up faithful discipleship as our goal - faithful example as our mission.
A quote from Mother Teresa: Be faithful in small things because it is in them that your strength
lies.
Thanks be to God.
God Bless,
Praise God from Whom All Blessings Flow...
