The exhibition presents 30 original drawings of the Storefront gallery space at 97 Kenmare Street by an international group of architects asked to go “from protocols, to obsessions, to positions.” LOT-EK, New York Hong Kong-New York Ann Arbor, Los Angeles Work AC, New York Chicago UMWELT, Santiago New York CODA, Ithaca Los Angeles FREE, Mexico-New York Fala Atelier, Oporto New York New York EFGH, New York DUS, Rotterdam New York Madrid As an image based on codes and systems of representation that establish a space of legibility between inherited and new forms, the architectural drawing tends to operate either as a technical tool of communication based on protocols and codes or in a diametrically opposed spectrum as an artistic device completely detached from the constraints of architectural practice. While one end of the spectrum is overcharged by the need to communicate, the complex or mysterious beauty of illegibility haunts the other. While protocols engage with a disciplinary temporality and obsessions are usually atemporal, positions address timely, current issues beyond those typically addressed in the discipline of architecture or an architect’s body of work. POP presents thirty drawings by thirty architects that address both ends of the architectural drawing spectrum, understanding its codes and protocols and deploying the personal obsession of each architect in the articulation of a position now. POP is Storefront’s second annual architectural drawing show that aims to contribute to and transform our understanding of architectural drawings in the 21st century. The drawings on display at the exhibition will be auctioned at the close of the exhibition and proceeds will support Storefront’s exhibitions and programs. Often, the role of the architect has been reduced to answer a question that someone else has asked. In exceptional occasions, the archi--tect’s ability to reinvent and produce new desires has occurred in the form of rebellion against the brief. In an act of bravura, architects have broken the rules, driven by the pure belief---that the real needs were contained outside of the given principles. ------------------------------ Given competitions operate in a confined space for experimentation, they have perpetuated--and sometimes repeated ad nauseam a series of programmatic and social needs–from Museums to Concert Halls—without actually asking what needs of society architecture should aspire to serve.----- This competition claims that the true desires of our present society are outside of the---current taxonomy of competition briefs and that architects should be participants in the con---struction of the questions they are asked to answer. --------------------------------------------- If a competition is the articulation of society’s desires in space, what new desires should we consider? What underrepresented spaces or individuals need to be explored? What are the questions of our time that we should be asking to architects, urban planners and policy makers to--redefine the way in which we build our cities and territories? And, what are the agents, authorities or organizations from which the competitions should be promoted? ---------------------------- The intention of “The Competition of Competitions” is to provide and deliver new and rele-vant forms of engagement and content to the economic, politic and social systems that currentlyact as the voice of authority for the development of our cities. “Competition of Competitions”-asks architects, artists, economists, philosophers, writers, and citizens at large to create interdisciplinary teams to formulate the questions of our time and define the agents that should--pursue the task to ask and commission the visions for the future in the form of a competition--brief. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- We encourage participants to rethink the format, content and agent/s that constitute the--basis for the way competitions and commissions are organized. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 2013 Poster for the international contest Competition of Competitions Client: Storefront for Art and Architecture, NYC *“Association Against Architectural Irrelevance!” is a fictional association still to be founded that defends the role of architects in contemporary society. - Competitions of Competitions S C H E D u L E ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Competition launch: February 22nd /// Early Registration: March 22nd [50uSD] /// Late Registration: from March 23rd to May 22nd [100uSD] /// Relevant Questions: Answers will be published-periodically /// Final Submissions: July 22nd /// Announcement of Winning Entries: September 15th. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------A W A R D S / P R I Z E -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------First Prize 2,000 uSD /// Second Prize 1,000 uSD /// Third Prize 500 uSD /// 7 Honorable Mentions /// Storefront Special Prize ------------------------------------------------------------- The jury will select 10 projects (3 Prizes and 7 Honorable Mentions) and a Storefront Special Prize: “The Competition of Competitions of Competitions Prize.” All selected projects will be-publicized and given support to reach the pertinent agents and authorities. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The Special Storefront Prize “Competition of Competitions of Competitions” will be awarded to a Competition Brief that resonates with Storefront’s mission. II SELF-INITIATED WORK ATRIUM RADIO 2010 Website & Pattern Maker. In this website the activity in the Graphic Design department at the Yale School of Art is rendered in real time to compose sound and visual patterns. I assigned a unique color and sound to each student, which is played and visible on the website only when his/ her computer on his/her desk is active. Melodies and visual patterns are continuously changing through the unconscious influence of the graphic design students working in the space. ATRIUM RADIO 2010 Posters designed with the pattern maker 100 SMILES 2010 Website. Every day for one hundred days I created and photographed a smiley face using a piece of black thread and found objects. This website displays all of them scrolling up the page, randomly arranged. When the user clicks on any image, a popup window with the enlarged image opens and bounces around the screen. If the user does this repeatedly, many popups literally take over the screen, in a friendly invasion. 100 SMILES 2010 Website ONE MINUTE OF SILENCE 2010 Website. This website is an obituary devoted to what the visitors have lost, be it a loved person or lost underwear. When a visitor submits a new item to the page, the screen turns black for one minute, and any other user who comes to the site within that minute would also find it black. Once the minute has passed, a new tombstone is created on the homepage. By the sudden interruption caused by the screen turning black, the visitors become aware of the presence of other users sharing the same virtual space and time at a given moment. ONE MINUTE OF SILENCE 2010 Website WEATHER SCAPES 2010 It was hard for me to adapt to New Haven. I programmed an algorithm that used the weather information in New Haven at a given time to construct a prompt that was subsequently emailed to me. After receiving each of these emails I performed the command, regardless of its absurdity. My intention was to use information that was specific to a particular place to generate a brief moment of evasion. Instead of focusing on indiprojects into their components –text, vidual works this website proposes color, size, typeface, etc– and reused a view of the class as a constelation them to create new works. Thousands of colored paper stripes were bound together, constructing an anomalous book of unusual thickness and a too narrow cover. Thank You!
