Dr. Andrew Taylor Still Founder of Osteopathic Medicine ” 113 ALUMNI ASSOCIATION 2013-2014 Alumni Association O ur Alumni Association just completed its second year, so it’s time again to reflect on the many exciting things that were accomplished. Once again, the goal for this year was to continue to gather the most up-to-date contact information from our ever-expanding number of alumni in an effort to increase the number of paying members. These efforts coincided with those of the First Million campaign—the quest for a self-maintaining scholarship with at least one million dollars from member donations. I’m pleased to say that the roster of alumni that contribute to both of these campaigns continues to grow. Truly, the biggest event of our year is the VOMA Fall Conference because it serves as the stage for our annual reunion and homecoming celebration. This year we celebrated the return of the Class of 2008 with a full weekend of both Continuing Medical Education and fun activities in and around the beautiful Hotel Roanoke. Twelve alumni from the class gave lectures and nearly forty alumni and families attended the various events planned during the weekend. I am pleased to discuss two major projects that we are organizing for this year. First is the Global Volunteer Physician Program, which is intended to serve as an organized network of alumni who have the time and desire to attend the many medical missions that VCOM students and physicians complete each year. Second is a fundraising campaign that offers the VCOM community the chance to purchase and engrave personalized bricks that will be permanently placed in to-be-determined walkways or walls on the Virginia and Carolina campuses. As with last year’s efforts, the overall goal is to give members of our association a growing list of opportunities and services that continue to illustrate how effective their efforts are at keeping them connected to all the great things that make up the VCOM community. Jeremy J. White, D.O., Ph.D. Class of 2007 Emergency Medicine Physician St. Lucie Medical Center Port St. Lucie, Florida A s J.J. White stated, this past year was another exciting year for the VCOM Alumni Association. The alumni mentoring program continued to thrive, bringing more alumni on board willing and happy to provide mentoring services to our current and prospective students. As alumni board president, J.J. White ’07 fulfilled his alumni initiative of playing a key role in establishing the “VCOM Global Physician”, which serves to develop a network of VCOM faculty, alumni, and friends to advance a nationally and internationally recognized Global Health program. The First Million Scholarship Campaign is progressing to include more alumni who wish to make an impact on students by growing this scholarship fund. In the fall of 2013, the board was instrumental in planning the second annual VCOM Homecoming event, held in conjunction with the Virginia Osteopathic Medical Association’s fall meeting at Hotel Roanoke. Plans are in the making for the 2014 alumni weekend, which will highlight the Class of 2009. The event, beginning August 29, will include continuing medical education, a family evening at Claytor Lake, and a tailgate prior to cheering on the Hokies at Lane Stadium. Other events for alumni held during the past year included Osteopathic Medical Education (OMED) and the American College of Osteopathic Family Physician Conference, (ACOFP) both held in Las Vegas, and the AAO held in Colorado Springs. Future endeavors are being made to include other specialty conferences in order to reach out to more VCOM alumni. Diane J. I have chosen to be active in the rewarding challenges of GME, Resident training, and education.” – Tim Brown, Class of 2009 ALUMNI VIEWS Hannah Coulson, D.O. Class of 2010, Virginia Campus Hannah Canfield Coulson, D.O., graduate of the Class of 2010, will complete her combined anatomic and clinical pathology residency at the Medical College of Georgia in June of 2014. In July, she will begin a one-year fellowship specializing in genitourinary pathology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, an affiliate of the Harvard Medical School and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, in Boston, Massachusetts. ALUMNI VIEWS Molly Ashby, D.O. Class of 2011, Virginia Campus Molly Ashby, D.O., who served as Chief Intern at Grandview Hospital in Dayton, Ohio, will also serve as OB/GYN Chief Resident for 2014-2015. In September 2013, she was elected nationally as the ACOOG Resident Representative to the Board of Trustees and will be in that role until June 2015. Dr. Ashby is also the chair of the ACOOG Resident Council and will be working with that committee to reach out to students who are interested in joining the Osteopathic OB/GYN community. Being an executive member of the OB/GYN Club and the Vice President of AMWA while at VCOM really helped Dr. Ashby when applying for roles within the American College of Osteopathic Obstetricians and Gynecologists. She feels that the guidance she received while a student at VCOM has been one of the most beneficial factors to her success throughout residency. The faculty members of VCOM and the support staff really want to see their students succeed and be a positive guide in helping students achieve that success in the future. "I am proud to say that I graduated from VCOM every time I’m asked which medical school I attended. I also hope to offer guidance and encouragement to students who are interested in applying to an OB/GYN residency. Students are welcome to email me if they are seeking more information from a resident perspective. Despite the long hours and hard work, I love what I do and hope to be able to share that passion with others." 121 ALUMNI VIEWS ALUMNI VIEWS Niyati Sheth Sandhu, D.O. Class of 2007, Virginia Campus “VCOM students [of the first class] were the pioneer medical students at most of our rotation sites. This afforded us the luxury of acting like residents, sometimes stepping into what would now be considered the role of a fellow. In addition to the basics, I also remember first-assisting in aortic aneurysm repairs, running a code (under supervision of course), placing central lines, interpreting imaging, and delivering babies. We were all well-prepared for residency. I had no problem assuming the role of chief resident during my second year at South Pointe Hospital, followed by president of the House Staff Council during my third year. On our first day of medical school, as we sat there overwhelmed by the curriculum, we were told that there is a ‘light at the end of the tunnel.’ They were correct, and it is magnificent.” ALUMNI VIEWS Michelle Keating, D.O. Class of 2013, Virginia Campus “I cherish VCOM. I will forever be grateful for everything VCOM has allowed me to accomplish. Every opportunity VCOM provided me, whether it be any of the medical mission trips that I participated in or one of the many sports medicine opportunities, VCOM shaped me into the physician I am today. I am honored to have learned from some of the best physicians I have ever worked with. I am blessed to have had all of the VCOM staff there to support me at every twist and turn that life threw at me while at VCOM. Even at graduation last year, I was humbled to be VCOM’s 1000th graduate. I am so proud to be a VCOM alumni. I love connecting with other VCOMers and being a part of the natural camaraderie that all VCOMers share. There have been so many instances where VCOM alumni have gone out of their way to help me; I only hope that [I will be able] to pay it forward to other VCOM students and alumni alike.” ALUMNI VIEWS Arpit Patel, D.O. Class of 2011, Virginia Campus “I have always been thankful and appreciative of the education and training that VCOM provided. The pride I exhibit for choosing VCOM is reflective of my younger brother following in my footsteps. As a resident, I open my doors to all current and prospective VCOM students to rotate and shadow me if they would like to learn about my training. Additionally, I always make myself available via email and phone to answer any questions applicants may have when deciding which medical school to join. I have matriculated to an AOA approved PM&R residency and plan to pursue an AOA fellowship and continue my training and support for the field of osteopathic medicine.” Any current VCOM student wishing to communicate with alumni about their residency or specialty, please email alumni@vcom.vt.edu to contact the Alumni Office. 122 AL U M N I ALUMNI VIEWS ALUMNI VIEWS Todd Fridley, D.O. Class of 2010, Virginia Campus "It is my hope and my earnest belief that with continued efforts we can transfer to those who follow something not only great, but better than when we left it. I take great pride in being a VCOM alumni and I will strive to assist in creating an environment daily and within my actions on the board to illustrate exactly why I can be proud of VCOM and the direction/mission of the board and its members." ALUMNI VIEWS Andrew Ralls, D.O. Class of 2012, Virginia Campus Andy and Clint are both residents at Freeman Health System in Joplin, Missouri. “Attending VCOM prepared me for what the underserved area of southwest Missouri has to offer. As I finish up the second year of residency, I can say without a doubt that without the education I received at VCOM, I would be struggling. From their outstanding professors to the clinical simulation lab, VCOM is in a league of its own. Having a 2013 VCOM graduate as an intern this year, I could tell from day one that he was confident and prepared for what residency had to offer which is a testament to the education we both received from VCOM.” Clint Dunkle, D.O. Class of 2013, Virginia Campus “I feel like VCOM put me ahead of the game when it came to starting residency. All of the hands-on experience I had there really set a strong foundation for residency. I started on nights my first month of residency. It was a steep learning curve, but I fear how much worse it could have been without my old notes, professors, and friends from VCOM to fall back on for support. It was also nice to have another VCOM graduate at my program to help guide me through that tough first year.” 123 e Class 2013 124 AL U M N I Commencement of the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine’s Seventh Class O n June 1, 2013, the Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM) held its Commencement Ceremony for 191 members of the graduating Class of 2013 in Burruss Hall on the Virginia Tech campus. The class was honored to have esteemed guest, Governor Bob McDonnell, as their commencement speaker. John G. Rocovich, Jr., J.D., LL.M., Chairman of the Board of Directors; Dean Dixie Tooke-Rawlins, D.O.; and several others were among the honored speakers. The governor has dedicated his life to public service, having served in the United States Army, both active duty and reserve, for 21 years. Governor McDonnell retired in 1997 as a Lieutenant Colonel. In his speech to VCOM’s most recent graduates, he passionately urged each one of them to give back to Virginia by starting their careers in the very state they earned their prestigious degrees. Governor McDonnell stated, “If you are going to create something, do it in Virginia. The timing has never been better. Highlighting upon the importance of serving others, Governor McDonnell closed his speech in saying, “This college was created with a mission: to serve the underserved through excellence in health care. Southwest Virginia and the world have been its beneficiaries.” A reception followed the ceremony at VCOM II for the graduates and their families. 125 126 AL U M N I 127 A Week to Remember During graduation week, the Class of 2013 reunited for a grand finale of events. The military promotion ceremonies, graduation picnic, and a graduation banquet all celebrate this monumental achievement in the lives of our students. Their achievements were recognized at the annual graduation banquet and students received awards for their hard work. These events marked the final gatherings of the entire class before students venture out to their residencies and new career paths. 128 AL U M N I 129 Saluting Tomorrow’s Heroes T he Uniformed Service Members of VCOM were promoted at a ceremony on May 31, 2013, at the Virginia Tech War Memorial Chapel. Twenty VCOM students graduated from the Health Professions Scholarship Program (HPSP) and will serve as medical staff for the Army, Navy, and Air Force. Colonel of the U.S. Army Reserves and VCOM’s Associate Dean of Curriculum, Assessment and Education, Ronald Januchowski, D.O., made the opening remarks. The guest speaker was Captain of the Medical Corps of the United States, Mark D. Pressley, D.O., M.P.H, FAAFP, who addressed graduates and welcomed them to their new careers serving the country.
