Tamsui's numerous unique, historic buildings are worth at least a day's visit, and if you don't wish to walk, the R26 bus can take you to many of the town's main tourist sites. There are also ferries plying routes between the Tamsui Ferry Pier, Bali Ferry Pier, and Fisherman's Wharf for a change of scene. n Rd. 24-hour free hotline for travel services 0800-011-765 Travel Route wy Please call or check the website for relevant information of our travel services. Taiwan Tour Bus As you ride on the Tamsui Line, you'll notice the thriving urban landscapes giving way to riparian scenery around Guandu Station. Tamsui Station, the last stop on the line, is located on the Tamsui estuary: This area was once a vibrant port town. Though no longer a commercial harbor, Tamsui, with its abundant historic buildings and superb coastal vistas, has – thanks to the MRT – become one of Greater Taipei's most popular tourist destinations. Wulai is a renowned hot-spring village in nor thern Taiwan, brimming with the culture of the indigenous Atayal people. It's also got a tourist mini-train and a cable car, two features that other hot-spring villages don't have, making Wulai stand out. When coming here, first visit Wulai Old Street: Here you can try specialties such as stone slab barbecue, wild boar sausages, and eggs boiled in hot-spring water. Check out the Wulai Atayal Museum, then go for rides on the unique Wulai Log Cart and the Wulai Cable Car. If you come at peak cherry blossom season in the springtime, the combination of the Wulai Waterfall and the blooming cherry trees offers a touching vista. Wulai brims with hot-spring hotels and spas: Visitors can choose to spend some time soaking in a hot-spring room or perhaps stay overnight in a hotel; either way you can enjoy the view while soaking away your cares. Street Getting there: Get off at Tamsui Station, transfer to bus R26 or 836 (no service on Mondays) and get off at Little White House (小白宮) or Fort San Domingo (紅毛城) bus stops. The raised plank path along the sea wall, the white sail shaped cross-sea pedestrian bridge, and the tourist hotel that looks like a massive cruise ship are famous local sights. The plank path is several hundred meters long; at dusk visitors gather here to view the dreamlike beauty of the scene as the rays of the setting sun are reflected on the sea. The cross-sea pedestrian Bridge, also called Lovers' Bridge, connects the two sides of the harbor area and is also connected to the plank path and the tourist fish market; after night falls it is illuminated by colored lights, creating a different kind of romantic charm. The Lovers' Tower, operated by Fullon Hotel Danshuei Fishermen's Wharf, is 105 meters high. Visitors can be taken up high, revolving as they rise, taking in all the beautiful scenery of Tamsui. Tamsui was once the biggest harbor in northern Taiwan and attracted a number of foreign trading companies. In contrast to other foreign trading houses, as well as engaging in the tea and camphor businesses, Douglas Lapraik & Co, were also involved in the shipping business and once had a monopoly on the transport of goods from South China to Taiwan. However, as times changed, the foreign trading houses' for tunes faded and they became par t of history, the old buildings gradually forgotten. The Douglas Lapraik & Co. Building has recently been restored by the city government and returned to its former glory. As well as the restored exterior, inside there is a historical document display space in which various exhibitions are periodically held. . Tamsui Old Street, sampling snack foods .2 Sec he ng E. Tamsui Old Street, the common name for this popular Rd commercial district around Zhongzheng Road, is filled with . souvenir stalls, folk arts shops, and eateries. Though Old Street lost some of its old-time flavor after it was widened, old residences can still be found among its back alleys, as well as temples such as Longshan Temple, Qingshui Zushi Temple, and Fuyou Temple. Red Castle 1899, located on Sanmin Street, is a colonial-style building over a century old, which now serves as a restaurant and café. When lit up at night time, it gives a romantic, old-time ambiance that's popular with lovers. If you want to experience a quieter side to the Old Street, head in the direction of Chongjian Street, where you will find old wooden and brick houses on both sides of the street; at the end of the street the mouth of the Tamsui River can be viewed from a high vantage point. Also on Zhenli Street are Aletheia University and Tamkang High School, which have been used as locations for movies. Campus buildings such as Oxford College and the Octagonal Tower are well-known. Also, the boxy-shaped Fort San Domingo down the street was occupied by the Spanish, Dutch, and British in centuries past. The west shore is dominated by a vista of green mountains meeting the river, while the east shore boasts a string of riverside restaurants. The bridge is illuminated come nightfall, giving it an enchanting appearance. Paddleboats move to and fro along the river: Swan boats preferred by couples and larger boats fit for the whole family allow for the quintessential Bitan experience. Specialties of Tamsui Tamsui offers a dazzling array of options for dining. There are two main zones: Old Street (Zhongzheng Road) and the riverside walk. Old Street is famous for a traditional local dish called agei: broth-soaked vermicelli wrapped in deepfried tofu skins and coated with fish paste, which are steamed and drizzled with sauce. Other great snacks are fish balls, "iron eggs," and fish crackers. If you get tired of walking around, you can quench your thirst and re-energize with a cup of A-Ma's Plum Tea (135-3 Zhongzheng Rd.). Old-style bakeries abound in Tamsui. Xinjiancheng Cakes (42 Gongming St.), Bei Stefan (81 Zhongzheng Rd.), and Huwei Cake Shop (85 Zhongzheng Road) are venerable names, selling traditional Taiwanese cakes popular with tourists. And along the riverside are numerous seafood restaurants and cafés: Waterfront (135 Guanhai Rd.), adjacent to the Rong Ti, offers a leisurely Balinese-style setting. LOHAS Fun: MRT + Bicycle Travel On either side of the Tamsui River are well-planned bicycle paths. Cyclists can bring their own bicycles and start riding from Guandu, Zhulin or Hongshulin stations. There are also bike rental kiosks close to each MRT station if you want to rent a bike, but since there are not many that allow rental from point A and drop-off at point B, some route planning may be necessary. Tamsui Golden Coast Bikeway (淡水金色水岸自行車道) The Tamsui riverside cycling path is a relatively easy bikeway, suitable for adults and kids alike. You can start from Guandu or Hongshulin stations, riding past such scenic spots as the mangroves, the park by MRT Tamsui Station, Tamsui Old Street, and Fisherman's Wharf. Take a leisurely ride, stopping wherever you wish to enjoy the romantic riverside vistas and savor the oldtime charm.
