Purushan sets out for Delhi after meeting his friend Paru, who is researching a thesis on Durga, the mother goddess. Along the way he finds a hanged man who seems hauntingly familiar. Reconstructing the identity of the corpse takes Purushan, and a group of young men who all have a stake in the youth's history, from the northern Kerala to South Cochin, ending with a re-evaluation of a generation's radical past. Abraham manages to endow both the journey and the central character with broader historical resonances in a manner reminiscent of the director's master, Ritwik Ghatak. In Amma Ariyan the fictional is embedded in a documentary style deploying high contrast black and white photography and florid camera movements and self-conscious compositions.
