A Beautiful Trip!
To reach the Mendocino Hotel, plan on a 3.5 hour drive from the San Francisco Airport, or a 2.5 hour drive from the Santa Rosa
Airport. From Santa Rosa, stay on Highway 101 to Cloverdale, then turn West on Highway 128 which wanders through beautiful
Anderson Valley. There are several wineries along the way which offer wine tasting, and the scenery is breathtaking as you
meander through the last 13 miles of tall redwoods before you reach the ocean. Then head north on Highway One ten miles to
Mendocino Village. The hotel is in the center of town at 45080 Main Street.

Vacation Ideas
1. Abalone Diving -- The rocky and scenic Mendocino coastline features extensive kelp forests providing
excellent abalone and fish habitat.
2. Gardens, Public & Private -- Many inns, shops, galleries and restaurants keep charming vegetable and
flower gardens which also delight passersby; the Mendocino Coast Botanical Gardens are inspiring in all
seasons. Two annual spring garden tours show off the best of the coast.
3. Camping -- Private campgrounds and state parks, beaches and forests -- campers have an enviable array of
options from which to choose.
4. Outdoor Recreation -- Horseback riding on the beach, kayaking to sea caves, cycling to a cliffside picnic,
canoeing a river, hiking, golfing...active visitors are never bored here.
5. Historic Buildings -- Much of the coast's mid-19th century architecture has landmark status; the entire town
of Mendocino is on the National Register of Historic Places. The annual Historic House & Building Tour points
admirers in the right direction.
6. Only-on-the-Coast Events -- The World's Largest Salmon Barbecue. The Mendocino Whale Festival. The
Fort Bragg Whale Festival. The Great Rubber Ducky Race. Winesong. Paul Bunyan Days. Plus many, many
more, as unusual as they are fun.
7. Family Fun -- Many of the coast's events and activities are geared for families, and many accommodations
welcome kids with open arms.
8. California Western Railroad's "Skunk Train" -- Let a vintage steam or diesel locomotive take you through
the redwoods, as they have done for decades.
9. Visual & Performing Arts -- The Mendocino Coast has long attracted artists, writers and musicians; a
plethora of galleries and performances of the highest caliber are the happy result. Visitors may also sign up for
classes at the Mendocino Art Center.
10. Farmers Markets -- The Mendocino Coast can fill your market basket with fine wine, beer, wild mushrooms,
organic produce, cheeses, mustard, kelp pickles, coffee, jellies and many other local delectables. Farmers
markets are open spring through fall and offer a colorful and delicious sightseeing option.
11. Let's Go Fishing -- From a boat on the ocean, from the bank of a creek, there are plenty of Big Ones out there
just waiting for visiting anglers.
12. Whale Watching -- From November-March, watch the gray whale migration from land or sea. In March,
celebrate the leviathans with the Mendocino Whale Festival.
13. Redwood Legacy -- Lumber barons built many of the coast's towns in the last century, and the timber
business is still a strong presence today. Start with a visit to the Guest House Museum in Fort Bragg to explore
the redwood legacy.
14. Luxurious Mendocino Coast -- A pampering spa, a private, cliffside cottage furnished in antiques, stylish
shops and Restaurants...it's easy to indulge any first-class urging on the Mendocino Coast.
15. Coastal Romance/Honeymoon -- With a cozy inn, crackling in-room fireplace, fine local wine, the roar of the
ocean and plenty of solitude, the Mendocino Coast offers couples all that is conducive to romance. There are
plenty of memorable spots to hold a wedding as well, and local wedding planners to see to the details.
16. Pre- or Post-Convention Getaway -- Just an afternoon's drive north of San Francisco via Coast Highway
One, the Mendocino Coast is the perfect tag-on to a city convention.
17. Innovative Restaurants -- Clever chefs are turning out elegant meals in the coast's many restaurants, which
range from humble bakeries to trendy "celebrity" spots. Fresh, local ingredients, such as seafood and produce,
are frequently featured.
18. Hollywood Connection -- From East of Eden to The Summer of '42, dozens of movies have been (and
continue to be) filmed here. Scouting out the sites of famous scenes is somewhat of a hobby with travelers.
19. Vacation Rentals Alternative -- Great for families or anyone wanting the convenience of more space and a
full kitchen, vacation rentals continue to gain popularity.
Compiled by Clayton Abbott, October 2006
Things to do and places to stay in Mendocino County, California.
20. Local Products -- Outdoor furniture crafted from regional redwood, fine woodworking pieces, hand-crafted
pottery, fabrics, sculpture...there are many made-on-the-coast souvenirs to take home.
21. Holiday Season Hideaway -- December brings a candlelight tour of bed & breakfast inns, an evening lights
parade, festive decorations and a cozy escape from the chaos.

Thank you for inquiring about the Magnificent Mendocino Coast. Spectacular ocean views and
charming Victorian Villages dot the scenic Mendocino Coastline of Northern California.
Mendocino Village is situated on a peninsula and surrounded on
three sides by picturesque wildflower covered bluffs and crashing
surf. Established in the 1850's, many of the New England style
Victorians have been lovingly restored into romantic Bed & Breakfast
Inns, world class restaurants and quaint shops.
The harbor town of Fort Bragg is best known for the Skunk Train that
takes its riders on a trip through the redwoods and back in time. The
harbor bustles with activity from fishermen bringing in their daily haul
for the local restaurants and charter boats that offer fishing and whale
watching adventures. The flower meet the sea at the Botanical
Gardens, a flower lovers paradise.
Just two miles south, you'll discover the relaxed atmosphere of Little
River. Combining a beautiful coastline and Fern Canyons with
fabulous lodging and restaurants, you've found the perfect getaway
from the hectic pace! For fun, you can snorkel off Van Damme, stroll
along sandy beaches or enjoy a round of golf with an ocean view.
The quaint seaside village of Elk is the best-kept secret on the
Mendocino Coast. The spectacular views from the oceanfront Bed &
Breakfast Inns and cottages are absolutely breathtaking and inspiring.
This picturesque hamlet perched upon the bluffs, offers everything
from an upscale wine & martini bar to an Irish pub and dinner house.

Things to do and places to stay in Mendocino County, California.
The Mendocino Coast covers a large area (north to south) and is comprised of many towns and villages. Listing directions
and mileage to each of them would be impractical; we have chosen, instead, to show them all as leading to Mendocino, a
central point on the long coastal line. Reader-travelers may adjust their particular destinations -- north or south -- to the
Mendocino location shown in the directions below.
Towns or villages north of Mendocino are: Caspar (4 miles); Fort Bragg (8 miles); Cleone (13); Westport (24). South of
Mendocino are: Little River (3 miles); Albion (7); Elk (18): Irish Beach (22); Manchester (28); Point Arena (33); Anchor Bay
(43); Gualala (46).
