Budget Amendments for Enrollment Increase and Safety
Election updates and deadlines
During the coming months the Board of Trustee will be seeking two budget
amendments to the current year’s budget. These amendments will not raise
taxes. Taxes for the 2015-16 school year were actually 5 mils lower than the
previous year. The board must ask for an amendment in order to use funds
that are held in reserve. The first amendment is due to an increase in the enrollment of students at the Florence-Carlton School District. This amendment
has been approved by OPI and will allow the district to use $74,148.12 from
the General Fund Reserve and also generated $2,998.48 in additional state aid.
The money will be moved from the general fund reserves to the general fund.
This money is needed to help the district complete the boiler replacement
project. The meeting for this amendment resolution will be held at the
Regular Meeting of the Board of Trustees at 7:00 p.m. on March 8, 2016 in
the District Conference Room. The public is invited to give comment at this
meeting.
School Elections will be held May 3, 2016. Interested candidates
for School Board Trustee may file a Declaration of Intent and
Oath of Candidacy with District Clerk, Jessica Pyette, now
through March 24th. Changes in School Election Law no longer
requires petition signatures on candidate filing paperwork.
The second budget amendment is for school safety projects. The district has
identified safety concerns with the security camera system, door lock system,
and various security doors throughout the campus. The phone system will
also be looked at as a part of this system to improve communication on campus between the classrooms and offices in an emergency situation. The legislature has allowed schools to move money from any budgeted fund (with
some limitations) through an amendment in order to cover these cost that
might not be covered in the general fund or building reserve fund. A meeting

Parent or legal guardian must be a Ravalli Electric Co-op
member at the time of the application and at the time of the
annual meeting, which is March 19, 2016.
Must have maintained a GPA of 3.0 from freshman through
junior years and through the first semester of senior year.
Planning to attend a two or four year college during the
2015-16 school year.
Eagles Vocational or Trade School Scholarship:
Two $300 awards
Deadline: March 15th
Eligibility:
Have a goal to continue education through accredited
Vocational or Trade School.
Ravalli County resident for at least two years.
Farmer’s State Bank Scholarship:
$2500 (renewable for 3 years up to $10,000)
Deadline: Postmarked no later than March 15th
Eligibility:
Senior planning to enroll full-time in an accredited two or four
year college, university or vocational-technical program.
Preference for this scholarship goes to:

McCullough, a self directed assignment Zane and Braxton built this
assemblage from discarded scrap. Second is a negative space coil

Me & My Main Man Elementary Event a Success
The Me & My Main Man event was held this past month in the Old
Gym. Hundreds of "Main Men" and their elementary girls attended,
having tons of fun. Girls invited their "Main Man" with a personal
invitation. Earlier in the day on Friday, the gym was decorated by
volunteers, making the gym an almost magical place. Later that
night, kids and their adult date attended the event that was complete
with crafts, dancing, photos, a game, and tons of food. Each family
contributed a food or drink, that were gobbled up by the hungry
dancers.
FCPT would like to be sure to thank Gary & Leo's for providing the
helium for the large numbers of balloons that were all over the
gym. Many many thanks also to the dedicated volunteers who decorated, ran games, fed children, took photographs, organized crafts,
and cleaned the gym. We couldn't have made this night such a success without so many who are willing to step up and put this event
on. Finally, many thanks to the families that generously donated
food, drinks, paper items, and time to make the night so much fun!!!

The 2nd grade classes will be presenting My Home’s in Montana, on Wednesday, March 2, 2016, on the stage in the FlorenceCarlton Old Gym at 7:00 pm. The students will use tuned and untuned percussion instruments as accompaniments to songs about
cowboys, cowgirls, and ridin’ the range. You will hear Goodbye,
Old Paint, The Wandering Cowboy, Giddy Up, and many woes of
the old west. Student artwork, created in Mrs. Hartman’s art
classes, will also be on display.
The first grade classes will be presenting Dreamin’ of Summer, their musical presentation for this school year on Wednesday,
March 23, 2016 on the stage in the F-C Old Gym at 7:00 pm. The
students will use tuned and untuned percussion instruments to accompany our wishes for summer weather. Songs include Bees, Listen to the Sun, When Planting Gardens, and Hey
May!.

Get your act together for the Florence-Carlton Elementary Talent Show!
We are showcasing the talent of the Florence-Carlton Elementary school students on
Wednesday, May 18, 2016.
Are you an accomplished musician? Do you write poetry? Are you a good actor? Can
you do something unique? Come and
audition during the week of April 20th.
Acts are limited in time to 3 minutes or to one musical selection. Kindergarten through
fifth grades students may audition and can be accompanied by an older sibling or parent.
Students may audition as part of a group.
Musical act auditions will be Monday through Friday, April 18-22 before school, 10:30
recess, or 1:45 recess. And on
Wednesday, April 20 between 3:20 and 3:45 in the elementary music room with Mrs.
Sayler.
Non- musical act auditions will be Monday and Tuesday, April 18 and 19 before school
and on Wednesday, April 20 between 3:20 and 3:45 with Mrs. Hettick in her 3rdgrade
classroom or Mrs. Hartman in the art room.
Students only need to audition one time during that week.

Flo-Town
The Café Chocolat of 2015 was quite a success, and
we’re hoping this year will be even better. Last year,
with the help of FCS drama, we took you through the
decades. This year, we will be tuning in to different
radio stations featuring country, rock ‘n’ roll, pop,
80s/90s, folk rock, oldies, and talk
radio.
Grab some tickets and come on down to support your
school and delight in a wonderful collaboration of drama and music. Your ticket also includes complimentary desserts and drinks served up by our wonderful
middle school student wait staff.

This event is hosted by the Flo-Town History
Travelers and the Florence Civic Club. All
Proceeds benefit the History Travelers: an
independent group of students and chaperones,
led by Jackie McCann, traveling to learn about
our nation's capital and NYC during summer
2016.

Florence Hair Club updates by Scott Stiegler
On September 30, the Florence school community did something beautiful for
other people. 27 students came together at a school-wide assembly culminate
a commitment of time, hair-care and a heart-felt donation. They gave a piece
of themselves so that someone else could have more. They gave their
hair. We had 8 wonderful hair stylists who trimmed the locks of our students,
teachers, parents, friends and other community members. In addition to that,
another 28 people had cut their hair at some point previous to the assembly
and they also brought in their hair donations. Thank you to everyone who
made that day so special, especially to our hair stylists: Cecelia Doty, Kelly
Sayler-Hagglund, Whitney Bogert, Jessica Pumnea and Erica Amt, Jamie
Newbary, Kristie Lewis and Michelle Fyfe who donated their time.
Community members are still bringing hair donations. As of today 115 hair
donations have been made in the name of the Florence Hair Club. Total commitments to hair donation are at 158 and counting.

A number of students have requested another hair cut assembly for those who
weren't ready in September. If you are interested or willing to donate your
hair, please contact Mr. Stiegler before this next hair cutting assembly. If you
are a student under 18 years old, please bring a permission slip.

This spring, Florence- Carlton Elementary and Middle School
will participate in the Smarter Balanced Assessment for
English Language Arts and Math. The testing window for
grades 3 through 8 will be March 23th through May 27th. High
school will no longer be taking the Smarter Balanced Test.
Please feel free to contact your teachers for their specific testing week. Students in grades 4, 8 and 10 will participate in the
Science CRT with a testing window of March 3rd to March
24th.
The following bullet points are information presented from the
Office of Public Instruction given to schools to share with the
community members and parents.
Because of last year’s testing irregularities, results may not be
an accurate reflection of student, school, or district performance. The 2014/2015 scores will not be used for state
accountability.
The Smarter Balanced assessment replaced Montana’s previous
test, the Criterion Reference Test (CRT). The Smarter Balanced assessment is a better, more accurate tool for educators,
students, and parents because it’s aligned to Montana’s rigorous math and English/language arts standards.
The scores this year should not be compared to scores from
previous years. As with any kind of change, it will take time
for students and teachers to get comfortable with the new
standards and tests.
The new federal education law, the Every Student Succeeds
Act, does not change assessment for 2016. States are still required to test students in grades 3-8 and once in high school.
Because of last year’s testing irregularities, student results may
not be an accurate reflection of school, student or district performance.
About 76,000 Montana students were expected to take the
Smarter Balanced test.
 About 64,000 (82 percent) Montana students were able to
take the Smarter Balanced test, and of those, about 55,000
(72 percent) tests were scored.
 142 schools didn’t test their students, that’s about 18 percent of schools (792) that have eligible students
The Smarter Balanced assessment will be used next spring, but
we are cutting the time spent testing:
 Smarter Balanced will be the assessment used for federal
accountability purposes in grades 3-8.
 ACT will be the assessment used for federal accountability
purposes in grade 11, cutting testing time by two-thirds for
public school juniors.
 The Smarter Balanced assessment takes juniors, on
average, eight hours to complete. If they were also taking
ACT, that’s 12 hours of testing. The ACT takes about four
hours to complete.
 Measured Progress and AIR are negotiating a contract that
will allow Montana to deliver the 2015/2016 Smarter Balanced assessment using a proprietary platform, not the open
-source platform that caused so many problems in
2014/2015.
 Montana students will not participate in the Smarter
Balanced classroom activity, cutting testing
The federal education department requires all public schools to
have a 95 percent participation rate on its statewide assessment.
Because of last year’s irregularities, most schools will not meet
this requirement. However, schools will not be held accountable for this.

Fundamental Athlete Sports Training (F.A.S.T.) will be
conducting a performance camp this summer here in
Florence. All athletes are welcome. The camp will be
focus on speed, agility, jump mechanics, and conditioning using cutting edge training techniques designed to
prevent the likelihood of injuries and increase performance.
