Oakhurst ORACLE The Newsletter of the Oakhurst Community Association 2015 Oakhurst Perspective January 2015 Submitted by Rick Mervine, 8th Ward Alderman AldermanMervine@gmail.com • 331-452-5136 There are times when I use some terms interchangeably – not always consciously, it just happens. One of those times occurs when I talk about my home, my neighborhood, my city. Did I mean Aurora or Oakhurst? Or just my Oakhurst neighborhood? There are times when I am very proud of all three, I like the direction they are taking and swell with pride. And, there are other times when I see there’s more work to be done – to all three. Some of this is the dedication to constant improvement that I believe all three strive to achieve although not without some pain in the process. Still, painful or not, that drive to improve and grow trumps the status quo every time. For all of us, 2015 should be full of improvement and growth, building on a string of successes and an opportunity for continuous improvement. Yes, we’ll have a resumption of road construction again when the weather breaks but for some of the projects, the end is in sight in 2015. Both New York Street and the Route 59 project should be materially complete later this year. We needed to improve and add to those roadways to make it easier to travel our community. Yes, it’s painful during the process but I’m proud of our forward planning to find the funding and get these projects done. Our 2015 city budget remains balanced and lean but places emphasis on the most important strategic needs of our community: Public safety/quality of life, economic development and delivery of city services. Taking a strategic approach and spending taxpayers hard earned money on the most important community elements that will return value to the community – to Aurora, to Oakhurst and to our neighborhoods - is a source of pride, something many of us have worked hard over the last few years to achieve. You will see evidence of this in the coming year as the city’s new branding initiative takes our economic development direction to new heights, we realign our old, outdated garbage and recycling system into something that meets the needs you’ve expressed to me over the years and we work to improve and streamline government to respond even faster and better meet your needs. Many of you are already working in this direction with other community organizations and have begun to take a greater interest in your city, your community, your neighborhood. You’ve told me your experiences at the Paramount and RiverEdge Park and the Zoo, volunteering to help others in your city, community and neighborhood and introducing your children to this broader view of our surroundings. You, too, have begun to use these terms interchangeably. That’s a good sign. Most of you agree it’s time to work to build, not work to tear apart our community and that work, for 2015, has already started. It is my pleasure to serve my city, my community and my neighborhood! Thank you for all you do. Did you know that according to NCI’s Center for Cancer Research, roughly 6 million new cancer diagnoses are made in dogs and a similar number made in cats each year in the United States alone? Dr. Ann Hohenhaus, a boardcertified veterinary oncologist, lists some of the important signs that can help you save your pet’s life and detect cancer early. 1. Bleeding or discharge from any place on the body, such as the mouth, eyes or nose, or in the urine 2. Change in urination or defecation habits 3. Sores that do not heal 4. Bad smell from the mouth or body 5. Difficulty chewing or swallowing 6. Loss of energy; reluctance to exercise 7. Loss of appetite 8. Unexplained weight loss 9. Swellings or lumps that enlarge 10. Lameness or stiffness Please be aware of the above signs and bring your pet for veterinary checkups on a regular basis. Also keeping your pet at a good weight and limiting their exposure to second hand smoke and other environmental hazards such as lawn chemicals may decrease their risk for cancer. Early diagnosis can help improve the chances of treatment success, whether your pet has cancer or any other serious disease. To learn more about the financial and emotional impact canine and feline cancer has on local families, please attend the “Cancer Bites” adult education seminar at the Naperville Area Humane Society. It will be held on Tuesday January 20 at 6:30pm. Our adult education seminars are free, however donations are gladly accepted. Space is limited, so register today. Contact Terri Hancock, humane education manager, at 6304208989 x117 or email thancock@napervilleareahumanesociety.org to reserve your spot. Seminars are educational only, please leave your pets at home. [|AAAÅç ÇtÅx |á TÇÇt4 I am a two year old cattle dog mix and already I have quite a few stories to share with you. I was found pregnant in Kankakee County. Good thing they transferred me to the Naperville Area Humane Society. Shortly after I settled into my foster home, I delivered 12 beautiful puppies! Yep-9 girls and 3 boys! They all got adopted quickly and now it is my turn. I get along well with dogs and cats. My foster family even said I was house trained! I am very sweet, but I can be a bit shy and nervous at times so I would love to find a calm house to call my own. January 2015 Oakhurst Oracle 5 Fox Valley Park District Receives Illinois Distinguished Accredited Agency Award he Fox Valley Park District has been recognized as an Illinois Distinguished Accredited Agency by the Illinois Association of Park Districts (IAPD) and the Illinois Park and Recreation Association (IPRA). T The two statewide associations administer the Illinois Distinguished Accreditation program with the goal of improving the delivery of park and recreation services to Illinois residents. “Illinois has a reputation for the best park districts, forest preserves, conservation, recreation and special recreation agencies in the nation,” said Peter Murphy, IAPD President and CEO. “The Illinois Distinguished Accreditation program provides an opportunity for these agencies to undergo a voluntary, comprehensive evaluation process to demonstrate they have met state guidelines to provide exceptional park and recreation services to their community. The end result is to improve the quality of life for Illinois residents.” “This program gives recognition to park and recreation agencies that go above and beyond in dedicating themselves to offering quality programs and services designed to fulfill their community's needs,” said Debbie Trueblood, IPRA Executive Director. The team reviews general management procedures, finance and business operations, facilities and parks, personnel, recreation services, legal documentation and other materials including mission statements, goals and safety manuals. Upon completion of the evaluation, the agency is notified in writing of the official results within 10 days. Agencies that have achieved Distinguished Accredited status are recognized with a plaque at the IAPD/IPRA Annual Conference Awards Luncheon in January. “There are tremendous benefits for an agency that achieves Distinguished Accredited status,” said Bill McAdam, IPRA Co-Chair of the JDPRAC. “The agency's application and review process is an excellent selfevaluation and agencies that apply realize increased operational efficiency and effectiveness. Communities can rest assured knowing that their park district or recreation agency employs qualified professionals and has met professional standards.” The Fox Valley Park District was previously accredited in 2009 and re-applied for the Illinois Distinguished Accreditation program last March for consideration after the required six-year review period. A park district or recreation agency interested in applying for Distinguished Accredited Agency recognition undergoes a detailed, lengthy process of application and evaluation. A Joint Distinguished Park and Recreation Accreditation Committee (JDPRAC) comprised of members from IAPD and IPRA coordinates the process. “Agencies submit a self-evaluation and a formal letter requesting admission into the process,” said Wally Frasier, IAPD Co-Chair of the JDPRAC. “If the committee determines the agency is eligible to continue the process, we send them an evaluation date.” The JDPRAC approved the Fox Valley Park District for Distinguished Accredited status in November and specifically highlighted Fox Valley’s organization from top to bottom and its community facilities along with its overall professionalism and dedication of staff. According to Frasier, on the day of the evaluation, the agency presents documented information and gives a tour of pertinent facilities and parks for the evaluation team's review. In compliance with the program, the Fox Valley Park District will be reevaluated in six years to verify it has continued to demonstrate sound management practices in providing quality park and recreation services to the community. “We are very pleased to again receive this accreditation,” said Fox Valley Park District Executive Director Nancy McCaul. “This is a highly prestigious honor and an indication of our commitment to provide our communities with the highest quality recreation programs and facilities.” 6 January 2015 Oakhurst Oracle SUTFIN MECHANICAL • Furnaces • Air Conditioning • Water Heaters • Humidifiers • Air Cleaners • Boilers • Heat Pumps • UV Lights • Thermostats • Maintenance Plans Family owned and operated by a Naperville resident. 630-778-6100 Scan or Visit Sutfin Mechanical.com for cost-saving coupons! January 2015 7 Oakhurst Oracle A Lone H a m m e rtoe By Ann E. Funck ne day you’ll look down at your foot and behold a vertical knuckle is sprouting on an innocent toe. This physical aberration can ambush even the most wary. I don’t remember when my hammertoe burst onto the scene, but it’s gotten more grotesque with each year. About five years ago, I asked my podiatrist if she would make mine disappear. “I teach yoga -- barefoot of course,” I said, “and when students are in triangle pose or on their stomachs, my goofy toe is eye-level.” My podiatrist placed a pad under the offending second toe, slipping the attached small loop on top of the erect knuckle. “Try that for two weeks and we’ll see if it comes down without surgery,” she said. I returned to her office discouraged. We observed that the toe was still gross. Because it never hurt, the podiatrist wouldn’t operate. It’s tough out there for a toe. Recently, I sought out another podiatrist who might have a positive attitude toward surgery. I made the appointment with a fresh tactic on my part: I would complain of irritation and pain from my toe -- which was actually beginning. Before this new podiatrist entered our room, I chatted with the gal typing my info into the laptop; this often leads to TMI, which I don’t mind. After several curious exchanges, the assistant said with relief, “I’ll get my divorce decree in less than a week.” This spurred a discussion about a good man being hard to find. “Years ago, all that women could ask for was ‘a good provider,’” I said. “Now they EXPECT that, PLUS. . .” I got into physical detail which you can easily fill in. O “This is my second divorce,” she said. “Now I’m dating such a good man -- he’s older, treats me like a queen, and is different from the guys I married.” “Maybe a good provider is all women should look for again,” I said, and she agreed, leaving reluctantly, I hope. The podiatrist knocked and entered, introducing herself. An attractive blonde, she held out her hand, but I spied her shimmering gold stiletto sandals. My eyes fluttered into Frisbees: Eight hammertoes! “You have hammertoes!” I cried. Maybe I also said, “too.” I don’t remember because I was so shocked at her feet. Wearing those sparkling heels, she was actually showing off her toes: Eight claws! Knuckles bolt upright like tarantula knees. “Not when I sit,” she said, promptly sitting and looking firm. I dared not take in those toes again to test her word. I doubt that her toes would behave even while sleeping. Needless to say, my request for surgery was moot. I did complain of irritation in closed-toe shoes. (I didn’t mention my ballet “toe shoes” or she would have told me to stop dancing classes.) She examined my feet, saying, “Your other toes are hammertoes as well.” They didn’t look like that to me, but she should know. She filed the knuckle’s growing callus with a painful razor blade handy in a drawer, then dropped my foot. She saw my floral Birkenstocks on the floor. “You can wear sandals now till fall. Then wear box-toe shoes. Surgery has many drawbacks; I would not recommend it. If you get another callus, I can file it.” She would have liked to say, “Get loose, sister!” I would have liked to say, “Covering those toes of yours would be a public service.” I reported my experience with this podiatrist to my family doctor who had referred me to her. He probably had seen her photo in medical mags and thought she was a stunning physical specimen interested in aesthetics. It was news to him that her toes were walking evidence of her aversion to surgery -- or aversion to competition from lady patients in the cool-foot department. “Look WAY DOWN,” I’d urge my family doctor. I told all to my best friend Elene who has had toe and foot afflictions but avoids doctors. Elene had belated advice about my podiatrist displaying her humped toes: “You should have told her when she traipsed into the room, ‘Oh, I just came to visit,’ and vamoose.” The podiatrist’s personable assistant and I had approved a better plan for her marital future than this podiatrist had for my future in summer sandals. I’m left with a toe that likes to hump -- without surgical intervention. But my family doctor had given me two names to nail down for toe woes. Maybe the male one prefers attractive feet. I’ll call Foot Doc #3 and maybe get a toehold. He surely won’t be showing off a pedicure. Fifteen years of Ann's monthly true tales are now in a book titled, A CHEAP SEXY CAR & More Serious Humor. Entertainment for everyone, it is 450 pages and $20 hand-delivered -- or $25 if mailed.
