6 (Days) + 12 (Years) = BIG SUCCESS
Rally in the Valley 2014 roared with the thunderous (not lightning and thunder!)
sound of engines as thousands and thousands of people - and their bikes - filled
downtown Olean and Bradner Stadium for SIX DAYS. More than 880 participants
(569 motorcycles) participated in Sunday’s event (about fifty less than last year’s
numbers). Sponsored by Gowanda Harley-Davidson, Greater Olean Area
Chamber of Commerce, and the area Motorcycle Enthusiasts, the six-day event
is a motorcycle rally with the proceeds benefiting a host of community charities.
The winners of the 122-mile Dice Run were: Jeremy Beck of Portville, (scored 147
out of a possible 180 points), Dave Stahlman, Port Allegany, PA and Pete Giermeck
of Olean, NY tied with 134 points; Scott Basil, Cuba, NY and Sherri Spiers, Port
Allegany tied with 130 points ; Tom Strawderman of Coudersport, PA won the
special dice roll of 114 and Theresa Shea, Olean and Gerald Thurley of Brockport,
NY tied and rolled the lowest score of 79 points.
The First Poker Run featured 62 participants (33 cars). Winners included best
hand – Denise Hammond of Cattaraugus; second best hand - Rick Bokman,
Allegany NY, highest no pair winner was Mike Jennings, Olean, and lowest no
pair winners was Chris Nelson, also, of Olean.
The winner of the FIRST PRIZE of a Harley Davidson 2014 Brilliant Silver Pearl
Street Glide FLHX was David Koebelin of Allegany, NY and SECOND PRIZE
of 2014 Polaris Sportsman 570 EFI ATV went to Ron Nolder of Portville, NY
THIRD PRIZE 2014 Carmate V-Nose 7x12 Enclosed Trailer was raffled to John
Vandermark of Cyclone, PA.
Saturday of the Rally event was Stroehmann’s Bakeries Games and Fun Day. For
the bike games, the winners included: SLOW RIDE – Roger Ball of Salamanca
(Sports) and Chad Caldwell, Portville; BALL DROP – Andy and Chris Fadale of
Hinsdale; HOT DOG – Basil Scott and Kerry Perese of Hinsdale; BIKE JOUSTING
– Gary Hendryx and Darryn Capito of Olean; and TIRE TOSS – Gary Hendryx
and Darryn Capito of Olean. New contest to the Rally included the non-alcoholic
version of Beer Pong with winners Theresa Shea and Tommy Graves of Olean.
For The Buckles Agency bike judging contest on Friday night, the winners
included: BEST PAINT JOB – Sandy Lund of Olean; CRUISER – tied winners
John Andhor of Olean, and Mary Lynn Conta of Buffalo; RADICAL CUSTOM –
Brandon Gelder of Olean; VINTAGE – Todd Prescutt/Bob Burggett of Portville;
TOURING – Gary Hendryx of Olean; SPECIAL INTEREST Ronnie Bares of
Cuba; and BEST OF SHOW – Jeff Armstrong of Bradford, PA. Michael Gee of
Roswell, New Mexico drove 1,725 miles in for the Rally and was awarded with
the FARTHEST TRAVELED plaque. For more information on the Annual Rally

4.5% Increase!
The University of Pittsburgh at
Bradford has exceeded its enrollment
goals for new freshmen and transfer
students for the 2014-15 academic
year.
Early enrollment numbers indicate
that 417 new freshmen and 154
transfer students have joined
upperclass students this fall when
classes started Aug. 25. Currently,
Pitt-Bradford’s total enrollment
stands at 1,531, a 4.5 percent increase
over the enrollment count at this
time last year. Of that total, 1,402
students are full time, a 3.6 percent
increase, and 129 are part time, a 16
percent hike.
In addition to exceeding its enrollment
goals, Pitt-Bradford also has a record
number of students living on campus
this fall.
The addition of Lester and Barbara
Rice House residence hall, which
opened for the first time this fall,
brings the total number of residence
halls to 15, enabling the university to
accommodate more resident students
than ever before. This fall, about
1,025 students are living on campus.

may remember, Rally 2005 held
in downtown Olean featured a
wedding. The 2014 Rally will
be remembered as a marriage
proposal! Brandon Roth (Rally
volunteer) of Medford, WI, met
his future bride at last year’s Rally.
This year, Brandon asked Dana
Baker for her hand in marriage –
she accepted!

came to the Rally – committee
members DJ Dick, Shawn
Clark, and Randy Langdon
accepted and performed the
challenge Saturday after the
bike games at the stadium.

OGH Announces New COO
Olean General Hospital (OGH) has appointed Garrett W. Hoover, MA,
MHA, FACHE as Chief Operating Officer (COO), effective August 1,
2014. Hoover had worked as President and CEO of Nason Hospital in
Roaring Spring, PA, since 1999. He replaces Ronald Mornelli who left in
May to take a position with Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Western New York.
“Garrett Hoover has a proven track record in hospital operations
including revenue enhancing service line development, operational
efficiency, patient satisfaction, outpatient volume growth, and physician
engagement and recruitment. He knows hospital operations and will
be a great asset to our hospital, our employees and the patients we
serve,” said Timothy J. Finan, President and CEO of OGH and Upper
Allegheny Health System.
“I am excited to be relocating to Olean. Everyone we have met has been
extremely professional and welcoming to me and my family,” Hoover
said. “I have been extremely impressed with the many talented people at
OGH whom I’ve met so far. The region is blessed to have a facility with
such breadth and depth of services. I look forward to working with all
staff as we work on key areas such as patient safety, patient satisfaction,
quality outcomes, and employee and physician engagement,” he said.
He is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives and a
2002 Masters in Health Administration graduate of Seton Hall University.
He completed his Master’s Degree in Human Resources at Saint Francis
University in Loretto, PA and his Bachelor’s Degree in Labor Relations
at Penn State University.
Business After Hours Season 14/15 kicked off in August at the Covered
Wagon Tours office here in Olean. September’s will be hosted at Rock
City Park. Archbishop Walsh Academy and Southern Tier Catholic
School will host October’s. November will be hosted and held at Paul
Brown Motors. December will be at Raymour & Flanigans. January
will be hosted by Leadership Cattaraugus and held at Jamestown
Community College’s Cutco Theater. February will be at Olean General
Hospital and hosted by both OGH and Upper Allegheny Health Care
System. John Irving and MetLife will play host in March. April will
be held at Lee’s Beer & Wine Supplies. The season will close at the
Sub Con Industries in May.

How to Generate Leads via the Chamber of Commerce
You have a very good reason to join your local chamber of commerce: “One
study on consumer preferences found that 63% of consumers prefer to shop and
do business with chamber members,” writes Mike Bowman at MarketingProfs.
But the respectability of chamber membership isn’t the only perk: It can also
generate a steady flow of leads. Here’s how:
Get placement on your chamber’s website. Many chambers will give you space
at their site for a nominal fee—or even, sometimes, for free. In some cases, you
can use your profile to post offers and announcements.
Let the chamber promote your news. Your chamber regularly publicizes member
news and events through its website and newsletters. Let it know when you
have information to share.
Contribute articles. “Chambers are very willing to post well-written articles
submitted by members in their newsletter, on their website, or in their LinkedIn
group,” says Bowman.
Give presentations. Request time to speak when your chamber hosts events.
You might have up to 30 minutes to discuss your business with a receptive
audience. You can also serve on expert panels, or as an emcee, at chamber
seminars.
Host after-hours events. These tend to be more social than professional, but
you’re networking and building relationships with potential customers—so
there’s no downside.

•SPCA in Cattaraugus County
Announces Low-Cost Spay Neuter
Project – The SPCA in Cattaraugus
County have received a generous
grant from Best Friends Animal
Society that will allow them to offer
low-cost spay and neuter of dogs and
cats to county residents.
The organization has partnered with
Dr. Kenton Flaig of Portville Vet
Clinic to perform the surgeries. To be
eligible for low-cost spay and neuter,
Cattaraugus County residents must
show proof of residency, provide
a New York State Benefit Card for
Temporary Assistance, Medicaid or
Food Stamps, receive HEAP, SSDI,
SSI or meet the Income Requirements.
Basic fees are: Male Cat: $30, Female
Cat: $50, Male Dog: $60, Female Dog:
$80. There are additional fees for dogs
over 40 pounds, pregnant female
cats and dogs, hernia repairs, etc.
Patients must have proof of current
and protective vaccine status before
surgery. A vaccine certificate from
a licensed DVM must be provided.
Surgeries will be completed at
Portville Vet Clinic, 159 S. Main St.
Portville.

welcomes Jordan Moore as the new
Aquatics Director. Jordan is coming
from the Athletic Department at the
University of Detroit, Mercy where
he has spent the last 2 years serving as
the Assistant Director of Operations.
Jordan is originally from Western
New York and graduated from
Niagara University with a Bachelor’s
degree in Sports Management.
Throughout college and part of high
school, Jordan was on the aquatics

rule requires you to make your persuasive point in no more than 27 words
within a time frame no longer than nine seconds with no more than three points

your listener. This message is not the place to present your entire appeal –

Nonprofit leaders to ‘collaborate’ at
fourth annual Nonprofit Networking Day
Keynote speaker Robert Gioia, John R. Oishei Foundation
president, will illustrate how participants from different
nonprofits can work together in his address “Cultivating
Successful Collaborations” at the Cattaraugus Region
Community Foundation’s fourth annual Nonprofit
Networking Day, Friday, Nov. 7, 2014.
“The Community Foundation is proud to once again be able
to bring together members from our area’s nonprofits in
the spirit of learning together, networking and finding new
opportunities for collaboration,” said Karen Niemic Buchheit,
CRCF Executive Director.
“This event continues to help existing and emerging nonprofit
organizations strengthen their operations and build capacity,”
she added.
Co-sponsored by St. Bonaventure University and the Greater
Olean Area Chamber of Commerce, Nonprofit Networking Day is slated 8 a.m. – 1
p.m. at St. Bonaventure University’s Quick Center for the Arts.
A Buffalo native, Mr. Gioia began his career in 1970 as a part of the third generation
of the Gioia family operating the Gioia Macaroni Company. From 1992-2007, he
was a principal with the Food Group of Strategic Investments and Holdings, Inc.
Established in 1983, Strategic Investments & Holdings, Inc. is one of the most
experienced equity acquisition firms in the nation today.
In August of 2012, Governor Cuomo appointed Mr. Gioia to serve on the Erie
Canal Harbor Development Corporation (ECHDC). He was then elected Chair
in September of 2012. The ECHDC supports the development of public activities
at Canalside, the Ohio Street corridor and the Outer Harbor for the enjoyment of
WNY residents and tourists. Its vision is to revitalize the waterfront and restore
economic growth to Buffalo.
Named one of The Buffalo News’ Citizens of the Year in 1997 and again in 2007, he
also received the 2013 Distinguished Citizen Achievement Award from Canisius
College at its 47th annual Scholarship Ball.
