The outpouring of compassion and patriotism across America still stands strong in all of our minds. The unprecedented response by citizens to help our American community was inspirational. The American Red Cross hopes to draw on that spirit as the thirteenth anniversary of the tragedy nears. As we once again prepare to remember those lost with a National Day of Service and Remembrance, the Red Cross encourages people to roll up a sleeve to give the gift of life in honor of the victims of that tragic day. The Police and Fire Departments of Olean and the Red Cross are joining together for the September 11 Memorial Blood Drive on Thursday, September 11, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Good Times of Olean, located at 800R East State Street. All presenting donors at this blood drive will receive a free t-shirt. Additionally, each presenting donor will have the opportunity to enter into a grand prize drawing for a round-trip JetBlue airline ticket.* Local Army Recruiters will be on site with giveaways and WPIG-FM will be broadcasting live. Refreshments will be available throughout the day. “The Red Cross has received tremendous support at our September 11 Memorial Blood Drives” says Melissa Riehle, Account Manager, Red Cross Blood Services, New York-Penn Region. “I am proud to live in such a great community. The Southern Tier community has demonstrated over the past twelve years that they are a community of people that truly take action when asked to pull together to honor the heroes of September 11th. Hopefully everyone will come together again this year and help us pay tribute to the men and women who lost their lives that tragic day and help save the lives of hospital patients in need.” It is the blood on the shelves today that helps save lives tomorrow. That is why your donation through the Red Cross is so important. Now is the perfect time to show your support and give back to the Olean community, as Red Cross is the primary supplier of blood products and services to Olean General Hospital. Walk-ins are always welcome, but donors are encouraged to schedule an appointment in advance by calling 1-800RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or by visiting redcrossblood.org. The Foundation board presented its 2014 Friends of the Foundation award to Tyler Bihler’s mother, Kim Bihler, brothers Shawn and Josh, aunt Lori Lewicki, uncle Jeff Anastasia, and grandparents Ron and Marlene Anastasia for their commitment to building the scholarship in Tyler’s memory. In the summer of 2004 the Washington West third grader, known for his winning smile and kind heart, was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor. One year later he passed away at the age of nine. His family and friends turned that heartbreak into inspiration, creating a scholarship in his memory. The first two awards from the scholarship were made this year to members of his graduating class. Tyler Bihler’s family members (from back right) grandmother Marlene Anastasia, brother Josh Bihler, grandfather Ron Anastasia, mother Kim Bihler, aunt Lori Lewicki and brother Shawn Bihler with the Tyler Bihler Memorial Scholarship fund’s first awardees, Olean High School graduates Alexa Minard and Jonah Rosel. Board vice president Wendy Brand presented the awards on behalf of the Foundation. “This is a family who is dedicated not only to a wonderful little boy who left us too soon, but also to preserving his memory by helping others in his name,” Ms. Brand said. “They are helping young people with their educational goals and also inspiring many with their acts of kindness and community service,” Ms. Brand added. “August 25 will mark nine years since we lost Tyler, but it still feels like yesterday. Yet, this scholarship has been a blessing because we’ve been able to talk about Tyler and now these awards will make a difference for these students,” Ms. Lewicki noted in accepting the award on behalf of the family. The first two recipients of the Tyler Bihler Memorial Scholarship, Alexa Minard and Jonah Rosel of Olean High School, possessed qualities that reminded Tyler’s family of him and his kindness and perseverance, she added. “The Bihler family members join a distinguished group of community members who have made our region a better place through their active involvement and generosity,” said Karen Niemic Buchheit, CRCF Executive Director. Past recipients of the Friends of the Foundation award include: Betty Pappas, Russell Hurlburt, John “Jack” and Louise Murphy, Carroll and Dolores Anstaett, Mildred “Millie” Milliman, Steve and Donna Teuscher and Jonathan Teuscher Scholarship Committee members, Erick and Marianne Laine and Peter Laine. This year’s award commitments exceed $100,000. Ms. Minard and Mr. Rosel spoke on behalf of the scholarship students, iterating their gratitude to Tyler’s family for honoring them with the awards in Tyler’s memory as well as thanking all the donors who have created and contributed to scholarships at the Foundation, noting awards ease student’s financial burdens and give them confidence. Ms. Minard plans to attend Jamestown Community College in Olean and major in social work and psychology with intentions of completing her bachelor’s degree at a university.
