THE DATA PLATE Volume 31, No. 3 Mid-America Packards, Inc. March 2013 The Data Plate is the Official Publication of Mid-America Packards – A Region of Packard Automobile Classics March Meeting and Program Our next regular meeting will be March 22 at Chappell’s Restaurant & Sports Museum located at 323 Armour Rd in North Kansas City. Take Exit 6 off of I-35 just north of the Kit Bond Bridge, and then head west 0.8 miles. The restaurant is on the left, or south, side Armour Road. No refreshments are necessary – we will have the entire Chappell’s menu at our disposal! We will convene at 6:30 to order our meals or refreshments. While waiting for our orders, owner Jim Chappell will provide our program, a narrative on one of the most unique collections of sports memorabilia in Kansas City and beyond. In fact, Chappell’s is as much museum as it is restaurant, a clever way of handling a collection of huge proportions! Following the meal, we will hold our customary membership meeting and discuss our upcoming events. We hope to see everyone there for a great evening! Dues Reminder Membership Director Steve Christy and Treasurer Mike Sneed would like to invite all members to consider the renewal of your dues for 2013. A New Look at Kansas City’s First Packard Dealership Edward P. Moriarty began his career in banking, then as proprietor of E.P. Moriarty & Co., purveyor of sporting goods and bicycles. Later, along with his brother James F., Moriarty became Kansas City’s first Packard dealer, handling the Packard automobile as well as Packard trucks, and Stevens-Duryea automobiles by 1901. They later added Peerless, Pierce Arrow, Chalmers, Clement, Winton, Autocar and Bayard automobiles. The dealership was located at 1612-1614 Grand, a handy location. It is noted that Moriarty participated at the first Kansas City combined dealership automobile show, which was held at Convention Hall, February 12-17, 1912, and was a primary force behind the Automobile Club of Kansas City. The last references to the Moriarty Packard dealership date to 1915, but possibly extending as late as 1918. Any other photographs of Moriarty or his Packard dealership would be a welcome addition to our local history. Incidentally, the structure still exists even to this day, though it has been gutted and sports graffiti. [See Page 3 for photos as it looks today.] 4 The sales room of E.P. Moriarty. Wouldn’t you like to thumb through those books on the table? 5 The 2013 Hawkeye Packards / Mid America Packards Joint Tour & Meet Schedule for Joint Meet Paul & Pam Friskopp and Dick & Sue Boswell, as hosts.
