Executive Director, Dorothy Chandler, sheds light on the lives of MAC’s clients. W hat strikes me about the people we refer to as the “working poor” is that they are everywhere. They are doing important jobs and providing valuable services for the community. The designation is more about the types of jobs they have than the type of people they are. Their jobs are some of the most difficult. They work in security, healthcare, eldercare, daycare, hospitality, and the list goes on. Although the type of work varies greatly, there are many common denominators: Page 7 Page 6 MAC NEWS They earn an hourly wage. Their hours vary from day to day, making it difficult to work second jobs. Their jobs are typically part time, and they are not guaranteed hours. They generally earn more than the minimum wage. They can be sent home if business is slow. They do not have paid vacation, sick leave or health insurance. Their jobs are temporary, meaning that they can be replaced at any time. They rely on public transportation, making it difficult to work at jobs where promptness and perfect attendance are critical. They can only work jobs during hours when public transportation is operating. They are, above all, optimistic, resilient and grateful for MAC. LITTLE THINGS HAVE A BIG IMPACT! “ To have so much respect given to me when I’m feeling at my lowest is better than anything. ” In the waiting room at MAC, people are busy filling out forms and Over 300 people received selecting items that they reading glasses this year would like from a lengthy grocery list. Over the years, we noticed a growing number of people holding paperwork close to their faces or asking for help filling it out. This happened because clients could not see well enough to do it themselves. What a problem! Fortunately, the solution was simple. We decided to purchase reading glasses and distribute them to those who needed them. The glasses have made an incredible difference to over 300 MAC clients so far who have left our office being able to read the fine print. Making a Difference at MAC Dear MAC and Contributors, My name is Milton. On May 20, 2015, I was a victim of a random shooting in downtown Atlanta where I was shot five times. I was hospitalized at Grady Memorial Hospital for a period of two weeks and at the Shepard Center for one week I had a significant spinal cord injury that rendered me unable to return to work. Prior to my injury, I was employed at Norfolk Southern as an Operations Service and Support Specialist. Unfortunately, due my brief tenure with the company, I was ineligible to be paid during my medical leave. After depleting all of my savings, I was unable to pay my recurring living expenses. I received an eviction notice for non-payment of my rent and disconnect notices for my utilities. This was a very depressing and turbulent time, given my previous history of financial independence. After receiving a phone call from a close friend, I was referred to the Midtown Assistance Center. During my initial contact, MAC expressed a genuine concern for my mental well being as well as my physical recovery. They offered several words of encouragement. Due to the nature of my hardship, MAC was also able to provide me with a substantial amount of financial assistance during a period when funds were very limited. It is with a deep sense of gratitude that I write to thank The Midtown Assistance Center and its contributors for their charitable and generous aid to people like me during our times of need. Words do not seem adequate to say how much I appreciate your support. Know that I am grateful for all that you have done. Sincerely, Milton “MAC helped me put food on the table for my family when my hours were cut temporarily at work. Thanks to them, I am not homeless.” -Jayson A pair of $50 work boots MAC made it possible for a homeless client to gain employment at a construction company. He is now making $40,000 a year. Through the mandated screening process, Sara’s precise questions and accurate interpretations have helped MAC identify and serve clients. Connecting with clients, Sara delivers straight talk and dispenses practical advice, but she makes it palatable with the use of her quick wit and wry humor. Her no nonsense style often masks a deep compassion for people. “This woman is up the creek and she is doing the best she can,” said Sara recently through a rare display of misty eyes. “Can we pay her utility bill and give her some food?” Absolutely, Ms. Sara. his year, MAC nominated Jonathan Huddleston for the Atlanta Rotary Club’s Annual Barbara Rose Award for Community Service. This award was presented at a luncheon held in May at the Ansley Golf Club. Jon is a legal assistant for a firm in Marietta, and he took time to volunteer at the Midtown Assistance Center while studying for the bar exam. Jon is always ready and willing to help wherever needed, even at a moment’s notice. He has taken on many duties at MAC, including screening clients for eligibility, organizing the food pantry, and enhancing MAC’s website. “I started volunteering at Midtown Assistance a little over a year ago. I knew very little about MAC and thought I would complete the hours I needed and that would be it. One year later I can honestly say that I still thoroughly enjoy my volunteer experience. I receive much more than I could have imagined. I became part of the MAC family and work with people I love. I support all that this organization stands for and could not think of a better place to volunteer my time. Midtown Assistance gives people a second chance to make their lives better. This chance to restart their lives is immeasurable. Clients leave the assistance program and learn to move forward. We all actually can use this philosophy in our own lives when, at times, we need to reevaluate our own paths. I am glad and proud that I have MAC in my life.” Page 9 Who do you Want to Become? My discussions with my community, my new neighborhood, my rides on MARTA, and the Jesuit emphasis on becoming a person "for and with others," have complimented my work at MAC immensely. I have learned a lot about the experiences and challenges of the marginalized in this past month alone, and I look forward to being challenged, experiencing joy, and growing to become more fully myself throughout this coming year. MAC Connects with Georgia State University Social Work Program Forming community partnerships and establishing connections MAC has been honored to work with students from Georgia State University while they pursue their Masters in Social Work. Students commit 16 hours a week of their time to Midtown Assistance Center. Students screen clients for eligibility, handle case management, assist with volunteer groups, and help coordinate the Christmas program. Earlier this year, Tramayne Willingham, an Oxford, Mississippi native, was at MAC for two semesters. Over the course of two semesters, Tramayne established rapport with MAC clients and approached each case she handled with sensitivity and care. Willingham holds her Bachelor’s degree from Ole Miss and will graduate with her MSW in May of 2016. Sarina Marsh, from Tampa, Florida is currently at MAC. Sarina graduated from University of South Florida with a degree in psychology. Before attending GSU, she worked as a foster care case manager. “GSU is very fortunate to have the partnership with Midtown Assistance Center, as the myriad of opportunities provided at MAC reinforce social work practice,” says Dr. Bernice Liddie-Hamilton, Director of Field Placement. Donating over 1,000 cans, the students filled the pantry during the summer, a time of the year when food is needed the most. “We thought it was a great idea to serve the community and have a fun school contest at the same time. Discovering and Filling Unmet Needs Thanks to special funding from the following foundations, MAC was able to help many retired and/or disabled individuals who were struggling to make ends meet. Mary Allen Lindsey Branan Foundation provided funding so that MAC could help individuals with a disabilities who were in danger of losing their utility service or being evicted from their apartments. MAC was able to pay 36 rent and utility bills with this funding. The St. Luke’s Episcopal Church Smith-Hawkins Fund provided funding for people with serious health problems that kept them from working. It allowed MAC to assist with more than one month’s rent, to provide grocery store gift cards to purchase special items and medications and to provide MARTA passes for medical appointments. The Community Foundation of Greater Atlanta Extra Wish Grant enabled MAC to purchase and distribute shopping carts to our clients who have to walk long distances with the groceries we provide. It also funded grocery store gift cards for those who needed to purchase special foods or medication. Page 11 MAC NEWS E ach December, we look forward to participating in The Westminster Schools Annual Alternative Gift Fair. The Giving Fair is an opportunity to highlight the work of local nonprofits during this holiday season. "It is such a privilege for us to host so many of our community partners at the Fair. It is a wonderful way to help raise awareness and funds for these incredible organizations that are making such a difference in our community," says Stan Moor, Director of Community Service, Westminster Schools. MAC joined several local nonprofits in the selling of fair trade gifts ranging from birdfeeders to Haitian vanilla. In exchange for a donation, donors receive a door snakes(draft blockers). The door snakes are used at the base of one’s door to block the heat from escaping and the cold air from entering one’s home. Needless to say, these slithery snakes were a hit among Westminster youth! MAC is thankful to The Westminster Schools for the opportunity to share MAC’s story with their community. Words from MAC’ Clients “I truly appreciate everyone at MAC who gave me the groceries. Life has its ups and downs and I will bounce back. Thank you for being there for me.” -Sam “Thank you so much for adopting my family for Christmas. We enjoyed every gift you gave my three sons and daughter. I was in tears.” -Jamie A lot of people in places just work for a pay check, but Midtown really cares. I can tell by the glow in their faces.” -Jerome “ “ “MAC has helped immensely. There are few non-profits that do so much with so little. We’ve been located in Midtown Atlanta for four decades, so an organization like MAC, which helps the working poor of Midtown Atlanta to avoid homelessness and despair in times of crisis, was truly a perfect fit. We were touched and honored to receive this award and plan to continue our joint venture for a long, long time.” says Betsy Silber of CPC. Congratulations to CPC on their 40th business anniversary.
