Dear Friends,
Welcome back to the church year! We have new resources, new apparel to celebrate our
UU identity, and a brand new name for the meditation manual series.
Since 1961, Skinner House Books or one of its previous incarnations has produced a
“meditation manual” at least once a year. With reflections suitable for both public worship
and private reflection, these books have been alternately poetic and anecdotal, formal
and chatty, serious and funny. Many Unitarian Universalists have complete sets going
back decades. Skinner House’s editorial director, Mary Benard, explains,
The authors of these reflections discuss their personal foibles, doubts, joys, and
encounters with grace in a way that makes their experiences universal and transcendent. They show what it means to be a Unitarian Universalist rather than
explain it. They offer a gentle invitation into a Unitarian Universalist way of
moving through the world and growing our souls.
We want to extend that invitation further now, beyond the long-time Unitarian
Universalists who are already familiar with what we mean when we say “meditation manual.” These books are not, after all, instructions on how to meditate! They
are reflections on how to live, worship, question, learn, grow, and deepen in spirit.
Miles of Dream by Vanessa Rush Southern is the first book to be published under
the inSpirit series title. The word inspirit is rich in apt meanings. It can mean to
hearten, to infuse new life into, to fill with spirit, to encourage, to enliven, to bestow with strength or purpose, to exhilarate. This is what we want for you, and we
hope that these books, which will continue to arrive with the spring each year, will
continue to do all of this for you in your personal reflection and in your worship.
We are also pleased to announce the arrival of Lifting Our Voices, a new supplement to
the readings in Singing The Living Tradition, which will reinvigorate and update Unitarian Universalist worship.
And we have several brand new items to help you show your UU pride, including messenger bags, umbrellas, and stylish new T-shirts.
As always, your search for truth and meaning begins here.

Landscapes of Aging and
Spirituality
Essays
Kathleen Montgomery, Editor
In a collection of lovely essays, 19 writers reflect on the
experience of aging and the ways it intersects with their
spiritual lives. Alternately tender and frank, funny and
wistful, these heartfelt ruminations offer companionship
for those walking the journey of later life. The authors,
many of them retired ministers, ponder growing older
as a spiritual path—not one that we choose, but one that
has chosen us.

Nothing Gold Can Stay
The Colors of Grief
Mark Belletini
In 22 simple yet profound reflections, Belletini explores
the many and varied forms of grief. His honest, poetic
essays serve as a prism, revealing the distinct colors and
manifestations of our mourning. He addresses the way
we respond to the loss of people, loss of love, loss of
focus, and loss of the familiar—understanding that grief
is as much a part of our lives as breathing. Belletini uses
specific and personal stories to open up to the universal
experience.
Mark Belletini is retired after serving congregations in California and Ohio for 37 years. He chaired the
commission that produced the UUA hymnbook Singing
the Living Tradition and is the author of Sonata for Voice
and Silence, also from Skinner House Books.

Restored to Sanity
Essays on the Twelve Steps by
Unitarian Universalists
Ken and Cathlean, Editors
Unitarian Universalist writers reflect on their experiences walking the 12 Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous
and other 12-Step programs. Some of the authors have
been deeply inspired and affected by the 12 Steps; others
have struggled with the God-language of AA and have
had to reinterpret it for themselves. All tell their stories
with great honesty and humility, providing inspiration
and hope for those who struggle with addiction and their
friends and family members. Each Step is explored with
two essays and a meditation or prayer. Ideal for small
group use or individual reflection.

Exorcising Preaching
Crafting Intellectually Honest Worship
Nathan C. Walker
This book is an urgent call to expel unhealthy practices
from sermons, liberating the preacher and the people
in the pews. Walker reflects on ways to replace harmful
habits with healing disciplines that reawaken the craft
of preaching. Based on the lessons Walker and his congregation learned during his seven-year tenure as senior
minister and executive director of the First Unitarian
Church of Philadelphia. Preachers are encouraged to
listen diligently for new ways to exorcise harmful practices and to systematize exercises that enhance the craft
of preaching.

Rules? and The Oxford Handbook of Religion and American Education.

A God That Could Be Real
Spirituality, Science, and the Future of Our Planet
Nancy Ellen Abrams
Abrams explores a radically new way of thinking about
God. She dismantles several common assumptions
about God and shows why an omniscient, omnipotent
God that created the universe and plans what happens is
incompatible with science—but that this doesn’t preclude
a God that can comfort and empower us.
“Nancy Abrams dares to pose many of the important
and challenging questions that arise at the intersection
of contemporary cosmology, spirituality, and atheism.”
—Matthew Fox, Founder of Creation Spirituality

Primack, of The View from the Center of the Universe and
The New Universe and the Human Future.

Detained and Deported
Stories of Immigrant Families Under Fire
Margaret Regan
Regan shares the heartbreaking stories of undocumented
immigrants who have been detained, deported, and
separated from their families by the largest detention
system in the world.
Regan demonstrates how draconian detention and deportation policies have broadened police powers, while enriching a private prison industry whose profits are derived from
human suffering. She also documents the rise of resistance,
profiling activists and young immigrant “Dreamers” who
are fighting for the rights of the undocumented.

Of the undocumented immigrants living in the United

With their rallying cry “Undocumented, Unapologetic,
and Unafraid,” this generation is the newest face of the
human rights movement. This book tells the stories of
these men and women who are living proof of a complex
and sometimes hidden political reality that calls into

Considering Hate
Violence, Goodness, and Justice in American
Culture and Politics
Kay Whitlock and Michael Bronski
Drawing upon social science, philosophy, theology,
film, and literature, the authors examine how hate and
common forms of individual and group violence are
excused and normalized in popular culture and political discussion. This denial of brutal reality profoundly
warps society’s ideas about goodness and justice. The
authors invite readers to radically reimagine the meaning and structures of justice within a new framework
of community wholeness, collective responsibility, and
civic goodness.

A is for Activist
Innosanto Nagara
Here is an ABC board book for families who want their
kids to grow up in a space that is unapologetic about
activism, environmental justice, civil rights, LGBTQ
rights, and everything else that progressive activists
believe in and fight for. The alliteration, rhyming, and vibrant illustrations make
the book exciting for children, while the issues it brings
up resonate with their parents’ values of community,
equality, and justice. This engaging little book carries
huge messages as it inspires hope for the future and calls
children to action while teaching them a love for books.
Ages 3–7.

Sitting Still Like a Frog
Mindfulness Exercises for Kids (and Their Parents)
Eline Snel
This little book is a very appealing introduction to
mindfulness meditation for children and their parents.
In a simple and accessible way, it describes what mindfulness is and how mindfulness-based practices can help
children calm down, become more focused, fall asleep
more easily, alleviate worry, manage anger, and generally become more patient and aware. The book contains
eleven practices that focus on just these scenarios.

Peace Tales
World Folktales to Talk About
Margaret Read MacDonald
Maybe it’s the king who spills honey and then says it
is not his problem—until it causes a war. Or maybe it’s
some sandpipers and whales who get into a foolish fight
that almost destroys their homes. This book contains
more than 36 folktales and proverbs that illustrate such
choices. Always fun to read and tell, these stories also
prompt us to think and talk about the events that lead
to war and peace. Stories from across the globe are accompanied by generous story notes, source information
and suggestions for further reading on the topic of peace.
Margaret Read MacDonald is the author of numerous folktale collections and children’s picture books.
