Hoopeston Area Sweetheart Banquet celebrates 25 years A Valentine-themed dinner marked its 25th anniversary last week. The Senior Citizen Sweetheart Banquet brings Hoopeston and Rossville area senior citizens together for a turkey dinner with all the trimmings, plus entertainment by Hoopeston Area High School students. Put on by the school’s Student Council, this year’s event drew more than 200 people, said sponsor Ashley Gondzur. More than 60 volunteers helped make it a success. This year’s entertainment included music by the school jazz band and vocal selections by Katie Weston, Autumn Layden and Maya Webber. From the Blotter A 58-year-old man reported at 12:30 a.m. Thursday that someone damaged his vehicle in the 300 block of East Seminar. A 74-year-old Hoopeston man reported at 8:44 a.m. Thursday that someone tried to get into his home in the 700 block of West Washington. Artez A. Winston, 21, of Hoopeston,, was arrested after police were called at 6:55 p.m. Thursday to assist another agency in the 500 block of South Fifth St. Winston was arrested on preliminary charges of possession of cannabis with intent to deliver and possession of a controlled substance with intent to deliver and was taken to the Public Safety Building in Danville. A Honda key on a lanyard was found Thursday in the alley of the 400 blocks of East Main and East Seminary. The owner may identify and claim it at the police station. Police are investigating a hit-and-run accident reported Thursday in the 500 block of East Main. An unknown vehicle hit a parked 2007 Toyota sedan. A 30-year-old Hoopeston woman reported at 6:28 a.m. Friday that someone entered her property, causing damage and stealing items. The incident occurred in the 800 block of South Market. Briefly At the Library An Afternoon at Hogwarts Harry Potter fans age 8 to adult are invited to celebrate at 1 p.m. Monday at Hoopeston Public Library. The activity will feature magical science, crafts, wiz- ard games, trivia and a special reading from “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone”, the first book in J.K. Rowling’s classic series. Potter-themed costumes are welcome. Obituaries BEATY - Roger Dale Beaty, 62, of Hoopeston, died at 9:37 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2016, at Presence Covenant Medical Center, Urbana. Visitation was 4-8 p.m. Sunday at Anderson Funeral Home, Hoopeston, with Masonic rites at 7:45 p.m. Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. MONRONEY - Wanita (Samm) Monroney, 86, of Hoopeston, died at 3:0 p.m. Friday, Feb. 5, 2016, at Heritage Health, Hoopeston. Cremation rites will be accorded. A 75-year-old Hoopeston man reported at 8:20 a.m. Saturday that someone threw paint at his home and auto. The damage occurred in the 700 block of East Thompson.
