The 2004 Surgeon General’s Report states women who smoke during pregnancy increase the risk of pregnancy complications, premature delivery, low-birth-weight infants, stillbirth, and sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). The report revealed that up to 17.5% of teenaged mothers smoked during pregnancy and 18% to 25% of all women quit smoking once they become pregnant. In an effort to educate the community about the dangers of smoking, reduce the number of women who smoke while pregnant, and improve birth outcomes, the Low Birth Weight Development Center (LBWDC) has received a grant from the March of Dimes agency. New Faces Volume 1, Issue 2 Trajea’ Sweat is from Irving, TX and graduated high school in 2004. She decided to continue her education at the University Of North Texas. Currently she is last semester of her bachelors’ degree in Early Childhood Education and Intervention. She has 2 ½ years of previous childcare experience at various childcare centers. Working with kiddos is one of her passions, and as a result she has chosen to complete her internship with the Low Birth Weight Center. She states that she is looking forward to all the experiences the center and the children have to offer. News & Notes Recently we have received funding from the Lightner Sams Foundation and City of Dallas to help expand our program services • Our March of Dimes NICU Safety NET program is providing a vital link between the Parkland NICU, home, the LBW Clinic and the LBWDC • We are now a fully licensed child care facility LBWDC Intern Traiea’ Sweat Maria Rosa Delgado started working at the Low Birth Weight Development Center in late June. She really enjoyed the challenge and has realized how wonderful it is to work with children. She believes that we are their hope and that we can truly make a difference in their education and lives.
