A-Level student, Thandiwe Karen Mwanza received an Outstanding Pearson Learner Award for scoring the highest result in Africa for Pearson GCSE 2RS01 Religious Studies in 2015. She was presented with her award at the 2016 Outstanding Pearson Learner Award Ceremony that was held in Lusaka at the University of Zambia on Thursday, 19 May 2016. Written by Mrs Alice Mwila, Marketing and PR Administrator CHENGELO SCHOOL COMMEMORATES AFRICA DAY WITH COMMUNITY SERVICE On 25th May every year, millions of people across Africa and beyond come together in purpose and spirit to commemorate Africa Day, a day that marks the formation of the Organisation of African Unity on 25th May 1963 and celebrates African unity. Chengelo School was no exception to this year’s celebrations. To promote unity and equality within its environs, the school lined up a series of community service activities for its students to engage and empower the less privileged children that neighbour Chengelo. The students took part in a variety of sports with pupils from Kapanda and Nkolonga Schools, gave them some ICT lessons and read with them. They helped paint Kapanda Primary School and were actively involved in weighing and feeding babies at Nkolonga Clinic. They also played games with community children at the bordering Moffat’s farm. Community Service came to an end at noon and was closed off with a delicious lunch of African delicacies for the Secondary students and a picnic for the Primary children. The festivities continued in the evening with students being treated to a packed entertainment night. Following up on their Africa Day experience, the Chengelo students referred to their respective acts of service as the highlight of their day. They credited interaction with the community children for reminding them of key life principles and blessings they often take for granted. Written by Mrs Alice Mwila, Marketing and PR Administrator Joanna Bangala, Form 3 wrote: “The experience of being able to interact with others, who despite our equality as people have found themselves in a less fortunate environment, was quite humbling. It was flabbergasting to think how geographically close we are to these communities, yet at heart or in thought, they could be the last things we think about. I personally enjoyed playing netball with some of the older girls, who displayed great skill and the love for friendly competition. The language barriers were shattered by the simple yet thoughtful act of love, displayed in finding time to visit and play with those, we as Form 3B have learnt to call OUR FRIENDS.” “Africa Day overall was rather good. It was good to give back to the community that surrounds us. The mothers were all waiting for us which made me feel that they trusted us in our service. God truly helped me see the value of giving back.” added Chanda Mwamba, Form 4. “My experience of Africa Day was definitely not what I expected. I didn’t want to get out of my comfort zone and a 5KM walk to a compound was not how I wanted to spend my holiday. But when I saw the delight and joy we brought to those children, I realised we are the same. We smile, laugh and play the same. We are all equal,” said Luyando Chinyama, Form 3. PRIMARY CELEBRATE AFRICA DAY Chengelo Primary School celebrated this event in an extra-ordinary way. To commemorate this important occasion, various activities such as Art and Craft, African drums, Board games and ICT were organised. The day started on a bright note with an assembly where recorder club was given an opportunity to play our National Anthem. Most of the children were in African outfits which depicted the significance of the day. The Grade 7’s had decided to contribute to our community on this day by painting the classes at Kapanda School. This was an exemplary act of community service. To allow children to relax, a sumptuous picnic meal was served at the Mukuni’s garden. The day was wrapped up with games at the sports field and all the children had fun. Written by Mrs Barbra Tembo, Grade 1 Teacher Form 4/6 Art and DT Educational Tour As Form 4 and 6 Art and DT classes, we were privileged to go Lusaka for an educational tour from 20th to 22nd July 2016. The first place we visited was UNZA (University of Zambia) School of Engineering. We were enlightened on disciplines of Engineering such as Geometrics, Civil, Electrical and Mechanical Engineering. We had an opportunity to learn about the different methods used for testing materials. As students, this acted as a practical example of what we learn in class. We also visited ZASTI (Zambia Air Services Training Institute), where pilots and aeronautic engineers are trained. We were taught how the jet engine operates, what it is made of, and the different factors that affect flight. Early Thursday morning we were at Lamasat. Here we visited 5 sectors of production. This company is famously known for its water storage tanks. At first I thought that is all they do, but I was wrong. They also specialise in making paints, pipes, packaging and surprisingly, furniture! We also visited the Namwandwe Private Gallery, Signs of the Times and the Henry Tayali Art Gallery at the Visual Arts Council. These visits were very inspiring, seeing all these advancements in print and electronic media, amazing artists doing very extraordinary work, and very interesting meanings behind every stroke and colour. On our way back to Chengelo we visited Chaminuka. At Chaminuka we saw a large collection of artefacts and paintings from famous Zambian artists and beyond. Although there was not enough time, Mr Saidi, our tour guide explained one or two of the paintings. It was amazing! A special thanks to the school and our teachers, Mr Tembo, Mr Miti, and Miss Luwi. We appreciate their effort in organising the trip for us. Written by Njavwa Simukoko, Chanda Mwamba and Rhea Tailor, Form 4 Students KUNDALILA XTREME Kundalila Xtreme is the most high level adventure challenge course in the Chengelo Adventure Curriculum! Traversing over waterfalls, climbing the gorge cliffs, scaling steep hills, swimming through rock donuts and exploring deep water gorges are all activities on this course. Lower 6th Form teams “Frost Bites”, “Giordano Amigo’s” and “The Craters” responded so well to these challenges throughout the camp. The aim of the course is to test the student’s attitude towards a challenge, an aspect which is so relevant to their Chengelo life. One of the students explained how on the rock climb he struggled to find any hand holds. He related this back to his faith and how sometimes you have to trust even on the smallest ‘Holds’ if you want to move ahead. So true! Well done to all the teams for your positive attitude towards these adventure challenges. You were amazing! Keep it up! And stand strong on your Rock! One time for the “Bites”! Thank you to all the Instructors, Priscilla the cook, Drivers and Tutors for making this camp so memorable. Written by Mr Richard Thompson, Head of Ndubaluba Outdoor Centre FORM 2 TRIBAL SURVIVAL CAMP Praise God! Tribal Survival was a terrific success. Form 2 students survived everything that was thrown at them in their wild week in the bush. Waking early each day, the Form 2s were required to pass an initiation test to earn their breakfast; setting themselves free from handcuffs, eating boiled brain and lifting the mighty flog in ice cold water! The flog is an 8m wooden pole that must be lifted by the whole tribe for rule breaking and late arrivals. This year Form 2K completed 300 flog lifts before breakfast in order to earn their final feast of eggs and sausage. Well done! So through animal tracking, sleeping under the stars, canoeing in the ‘Kuomboka’ ceremony and much more, Chengelo Form 2s grew in strength of character and body. Congratulations to all Tribes for passing the test! We pray that the physical and spiritual lessons stay with you. Written by Mr Abraham Ankers, Senior Outdoor Instructor at Ndubaluba Outdoor Centre The whole term I had been looking forward to Tribal Survival. This is a week that each class in Form 2 spends at “Noah’s Ark Conservatory” on the Young’s farm. Before I left I was really excited, but also a little anxious about some of the activities, especially “solitaire”. The week went well and the challenges were fun. In the end solitaire turned out to be my special time with God. Tribal was a wonderful experience for me, I thank God for giving me an awesome opportunity. I have grown spiritually and physically. I was also able to get to know my friends better. Written by Alexandra Powell, Form 2K Student MT SANCHA (THE ASCENT OF RUMDOODLE) On the weekend of the 9th and 10th of July, 12 Chengelo students set out for the monolithic granite dome of Mount Sancha, known to initiates as 'Rumdoodle’. This immense rock fortress, seemingly inaccessible, was once an escape for villagers seeking refuge from invading slave traders. Fragments of pottery are still found on its barren summit. Our energetic band of 12 marched to base camp in record time and were equally impressive on summit day reaching the top before midday! This gave the group extra time to enjoy impromptu bouldering and a now traditional battle of bush boule. Besides the truly breathtaking views across the Luangwa valley and of the sun's last rays, the real highlight of this trip was time spent drawing near to the Creator. He brought us closer to Him and closer together. I will never forget the words spoken around the campfire on Rumdoodle. Praise God and thank you to an especially kind and capable group who made the adventure all the more enjoyable. In the words of David, ‘The Lord is my Rock, my fortress and my deliverer.’ Written by Mr Abraham Ankers, Senior Outdoor Instructor at Ndubaluba Outdoor Centre GRADE 5 ‘PIRATES AND WARRIORS CAMP’ Phobias were overcome when the pupils set out on the water in their canoes, excited to paddle, race and play some water games. Nervous as some were, they managed to brace themselves for the challenges ahead of them and as a result, overcame their fear of the water. Another real stretch was the 10m high faith pole, which the children had to climb, trusting that they would not fall and that if they did or anything went wrong, their friends would catch them. This was a great experience as friendships were strengthened, trust established and more fears overcome. Ndubaluba has done it once again!! The centre has equipped another group of Grade 5 Pirates and Warriors with key life and survival skills. This year’s Grade 5 Ndubaluba camp was held from Monday 6th June to Thursday 9th June 2016 under the theme ‘Stepping out and Stepping Beyond.’ Course activities included the Bible Race, Ancient Warrior Olympics, Canoeing and Ancient Rock Abseil, to mention a few. These activities were completed by the pupils in their The camp days were concluded with night two teams. adventures, gospel fun, and some hot chocolate and storytelling around the campfire. Written by Mrs Mutale Banda, Grade 5 Class Teacher and Hostel Parent RUMDOODLE (OVERNIGHT CLIMB AND CAMP) The Bible Race was the first activity of the camp. Here, the children had to complete set challenges in order to win word cards which when arranged spelled the Bible verse - Matthew 14:27. Ancient Art followed and was preceded by the Ancient Rock Abseil. These activities were conducted simultaneously between the two groups, allowing everyone full participation. This year’s climbing and overnight camp, Rumdoodle was a great success with many students, male and female, attending from across Grades Five – Seven. On the first day, we did a tiring trek to the campsite following a trail barely more than a goat’s track that completely disappeared at times, fortunately we were led by very competent instructors from Ndubaluba. After this, there was no rest for the students who then had to make their own beds for the night as well as the camp fire. This led to many interesting designs from hanging mosquito nets from trees to creating a little stand from scavenged wood and string so that their net stayed above them. After a challenging night on the hill, the students then woke up early and headed down a steep slope to the climbing site. Here, the students faced two challenging rock walls that they had to scale to earn their Rumdoodle badge. All students managed to make it to the top of both climbs with such gusto that afterwards they voluntarily continued climbing across every rock they could find in an extra bouldering session led by Mr. Abe. All in all the students have enjoyably moved one step closer to receiving their Rumdoodle Awards. Parents can start buying the t/shirts with effect from next term and children will be allowed to use them for all Physical Education and Sports activities. Our current Grade 7 pupils will be exempted from buying the new t/shirts considering they only have 3 months left before moving into Form 1. Management has since decided that term 3 2016, will be a transition period; this means that both the old (white t/shirts) and new (blue & yellow t/shirts) will be allowed in term 3 2016. Please note however that from January 2017, the new P.E uniform will be compulsory. Written by Mr Warren Mukuni, Primary Headteacher THE BACKPAGE 23RD JULY 2016 ROCKRIDGE CHALLENGE Primary school pupils were more than ready for this annual event as the outcome of their training could reveal. Those cycling had to make sure that their bicycles were in tip top condition while the runners were hoping a few vehicles would be on the sandy road to reduce the blurring effect of dust on their vision. None of the children were willing to face the challenge as a ‘John Walker’! Unfortunately, sickness befell two girls two days before the competition and as such their only alternative to be involved in the challenge was to succumb to the walking category. The Grade 1 boys braved their first ever challenge by cycling the 4.5 km stretch instead of walking to and fro at the bottom of the hill as per tradition. Their prowess in the event was so remarkable that they scooped the third and fourth positions. Liam Holding scooped third place with 19.06 minutes followed by Twalumba Hamutete who crossed the finishing line in 20.32 minutes. The 4.5 km cycling in the boys and girls category was won by Themba Kayumba (18.37 minutes) and Philippa Holding (21.49 minutes). Shane Parkes and Julijana Vidmar took the day on the 9km route with record times of 25.06 minutes and 36.24 minutes respectively. In the runners’ category, Raphael Chibangu defended his title in the 4.5 km boys’ category in 23.32 minutes while Elisabeth Phiri recorded her championship exactly seven minutes after the boy champ. The 9 km category saw Craig Shoko claiming the contest after coming in first in 38.24 minutes. The 9km running race was dominated by the Grade 7s with Natasha Bwalya being crowned the girls’ category winner when she arrived exactly two seconds before a grade 5 girl, Grace Ngungu who recorded 40.48 minutes in second place. One would wish this event takes place every term as it unites pupils, parents, teachers and the wider Chengelo community members as they compete! Please do come and challenge yourself next year! Written by Mr Hamutete HB Simunyama, Primary Physical Education Teacher CHENGELO’S ANNUAL SPRINT COMPETITION WARMS UP PUPILS FOR SPORTS DAY Chengelo Primary, Secondary and Sixth Form students gathered for the annual King and Queen of the Sprints competition on Wednesday 27 th July, two days before Secondary Sports Day. The Primary students competed in the Prince and Princess of the Sprints races to show that it’s not only the older members of the school who can run! After a 60m trial run for the Secondary pupils, the Princess of the Sprints race took place. Eight girls from Primary School ran the 100m, with Twapalwa Chisanga the victor in 14.40 seconds. This was followed by the Prince of the Sprints race, won by Lubeba Sikamo in 12.91 seconds, the fastest time ever seen in Primary. The Queen of the Sprints was next, with Johanna Bangala beating her sister to first place in a time of 12.68 seconds. The much-anticipated King of the Sprints was the final event of the afternoon, with Sambazya Ngulube retaining his title, winning in a time of 11.53 seconds. The event has surely whetted the appetite of the rest of the school for some more athletics. Written by Mr Josh Gibbons, Grade 2 Class Teacher PRIMARY SPORTS DAY The keenly awaited Primary School Sports Day finally arrived at the end the first half of Term 2. The children had been practising hard for the event and they were all very keen to show off their abilities and have fun together. Despite it being a very cold and cloudy day at Chengelo, the children remained excited to try their their best and their enthusiasm lifted the temperature. Grades 1 to 4 began with a ‘round robin’ of events including skipping, egg and spoon race, assault course and sack race. Meanwhile, Grades 5 to 7 showcased their talents in high jump, long jump and shot put. The field events were followed by a number of track events of different lengths where all the children participated in individual races earning points for their houses. The inter-house 4 x 100m relays were very exciting and parents/teachers managed to put together teams, without too much encouraging, to take part in their own relay much to the delight of the children! There was a great atmosphere with lots of cheering and the children are to be commended for being fantastic encouragers of one another. A huge well done to you all! During the morning a number of school records were broken: Event New Record Pupil Names Girls High Jump 1m 15cm Naomi Giffen, Rachel Giffen, Natasha Malakota, Renee Du Toit Boys 100m 13.43 seconds Lubeba Sikamo Boys 800m 2min 36.16 seconds Lubeba Sikamo The overall results for the Inter-House Sports Day Competition were as follows: Sable 1st Kudu 2nd Impala 3rd A very big thank you to all the parents and friends for coming to support the event in so many different ways. PLACE AT ISAZ 10-STEP ATHLET- ICS Chengelo Primary School took two teams to Lechwe School on 18th June for the annual ISAZ 10-Step Athletics. The number of children interested in athletics at Primary School meant that Chengelo were the only school to take an ATeam and a B-Team to the contest. The participants were taken through a challenging circuit of ten events including high jump, long jump, shuttle run and 50m sprint. The variety of activities meant that the competition was suited to all-round athletes. The Chengelo pupils had prepared well, practising all of the activities over Both the U10 boys and girls’ teams played very the previous weeks. well. It was clear as the games progressed that the children were playing their absolute best - the Chengelo’s A-team were eventually placed secU10 girls winning 2/5 games and the U10 boys ond in a close finish behind the hosts, Lechwe winning 1/4 of their games which was a fantastic School. They carried this enthusiasm through the rest of their matches which led them from success to success, managing to not only win their pool but make it through to the final match against Petra School in the afternoon. A goal was scored by Chengelo within the first two minutes of the match, however the game ended 1-1, leading to a penalty shoot out. Although this seemed daunting, the combination of our tactful players and strong goalie meant that we were able to win the final match and the Chengelo girls Written by Mr Josh Gibbons, Grade 2 Teacher INTER-HOUSE HOCKEY In their P.E class sessions, Grades 3 to 7 this term focused on hockey. Throughout the term, many pupils were developing their dribbling, shooting, passing and goal keeping skills. Most important, was their ability to play as a team. On 15th July 2016, an opportunity to display these skills was given to the pupils during the InterHouse Hockey event. Divided into not only age groups as Under 10 mixed (boys and girls), Under 12 – boys and girls but also as houses Kudu, Impala and Sable, pupils competed well in a very exciting tournament. In the end, Impala were champions with 13 points, seconded by Sable with a total of 7 points while Kudu came 3rd with only 3 points. We are indebted to all parents who made it into school to support the pupils and more so to those who made some contributions to the PTA stand on short notice. Written by Mrs Judy Hamutete, Grade 6 Class Teacher CHENGELO SHINES AT ISAZ ATHLETICS FINALS Records tumbled on Saturday, 11th June when 34 Chengelo students represented the Copperbelt Province (Northern Region) schools at the annual Independent Schools Association of Zambia (ISAZ) National Athletics Finals that were held at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola. The Finals were graced by the very best in ISAZ schools athletics, representing 14 schools; 6 from the Copperbelt and 8 from the Midlands, which is predominantly made up of schools from the Lusaka area. Chengelo students competed for honours in both the field and track events, contributing to the Northern Region’s overall 500 points win over the Midlands. Our U16 girls beat their old record by 8 seconds in the 4x400m relay. What a run this was by Johanna Bangala, Wane Mutambo, Mwaka Mukata and Stella Chanda! The U19 girls were not ready to miss the party as they went on to set a new time smashing their previous record by a whopping 17 seconds! Well done to Maria Bangala, Rohana Kawinga, Lesta Roberts and Luyando Malilwe. Written by Mr Francis Sichinga, Head of PE - Secondary
