CHENGELO SECONDARY SCHOOL’S TERMLY NEWSLETTER
NOT YOUR AVERAGE INDUCTION!
At the start of term, Form 6 were given very little time to relax before
being whisked away to Ndubaluba for their 6th Form induction
programme. This was no ordinary induction, as they quickly
discovered. The opening challenge saw large groups of 6th Form
students huddled together, wrapped in cling-film and attempting to use
the power of communication and team work to manoeuvre an obstacle
course that most would find difficult without layers of plastic restricting
their every move! This was the kind of start our 6th Form had to their
induction.

With the tone firmly established, students proceeded with vigour and
sturdiness into a variety of activities designed to test their resilience
and team work. From rock climbing to canoeing, the 6th Form were
truly on form, displaying strength of character and moments of
inspirational leadership, as head boy, Joshua Matewere and head girl,
Wendy Zheng recount:
Monday 21st — 25th March
“As the 6th Form students, we started the first day of school with
some exciting and fun activities at Ndubaluba. Some of the
memorable activities we did were The Trust Fall, the Spider plate and
many others. From these activities we discovered more about each
other’s characters. We took the initiative to plan, organize and
motivate each other to finish all the
challenges set before us. We learnt to
trust each other and persevere as a team
and individuals. Finally, as 6th Form
students, we are truly grateful for this
opportunity to begin this year with an
energetic spirit in all areas of our lives.” –

Form 6 goals
“As the 6th Form of 2016, a positive attitude was reinforced into each one of us after a long
Christmas holiday. These positive attitudes led us to set goals for the rest of the year. Not your
usual New Year resolutions!” -Kawanga Coxe
“At the beginning of the year, we all gathered together to create SMART goals which will impact on
the rest of our academic, spiritual and other aspects of our school lives. Our desirable goals include,
passing all subjects as a whole 6th Form, praying for each other in our strengths and weaknesses
and leading the school in a positive spirit through leadership. We hope that these goals will impact
on the rest of our lives in and out of Chengelo.” -Tiyamike Banda

2015 EXAMINATION RESULTS
A Level Results 2015
At the start of the term we congratulated our A Level (6th Form) students who achieved exceptional
results in their November 2015 public examinations. On average our 6th Form students achieved
1.6 grades per subject above their target grades, based on previous achievements. Months of hard
work and dedication culminated in a 98 per cent rate of students passing their A-levels with A*-E
grades while 90 per cent AS student passed their AS levels with A-E grades; and all gained the
grades they need to secure university places. There were some very impressive results, in particular
for the Math’s students who produced some glittering performances with near full marks for Julu
Lund our ‘Top of the world 2014 AS Maths’ award recipient. Julu scored 99% putting him in a strong
position for this year’s award again.
Outstanding performances coming from Julu Lund 4 A*’s, Mutinta Mukuyamba 3 A*’s, 1A (AS)
Chigomezyo Kawonga 1A*, 1A, 2B’s, Anna De Wet 3A*’s, Andrew Sukhachev 2A*’s, 1A, Salifyanji

IGCSE Results 2015
ever results at IGCSE in the recent past. Overall 91 per cent of exam grades were graded A*-C, a
percentage gain over last year’s results. In Maths there was improvement in the pass rate from
previous years, while 15 per cent of candidates achieved an A* grade, virtually double the
international average. The percentage of 5 A*-C grades including Maths and English stood at 81%
this year.

PRIMARY MUSIC ASSEMBLY
The program kicked off with the whole school
singing some of the children’s favourite songs.
The first presentation featured the Recorder
Club (Emily Wingfield, Caitlyn Parkes, Sinead
Miekle and Phillipa Holdings) who presented
the song Caterpillar Bye Bye. This was followed
by a presentation from upcoming pianist Hannah Falcone who played the song ‘Funny Faces’. The Guitar club (led by Mr. Dave North)
gave a wonderful rendition of ‘Jesus Love is
Very Wonderful’.
Form 1 students took an adventurous week at
Ndubaluba Outdoor Centre. We learnt a lot on
this trip including, trusting ourselves, trusting
our teammates and trusting God. The theme for
this year was “G.R.O.W” which stands for God,
Relationship, Open mindedness and Working
attitude.
The next presentation was given by Ms. ClareMarie Kafwimbi (Primary Music Teacher) and
Mr. Chigomezyo Kawonga (Gap Student Volunteer) who played the song, ‘Passion Chorale’ as
a duet on the recorder.
Coming back to the continent, the Grade 6
showcased the beauty of African music in their
drumming of the ‘Djun Djun’ on the djembe
drums. They then challenged the parents to a
drumming match in which the master drummer
Matthew Bangala would drum a rhythm which
was repeated by both groups.
The main feature of the day was the story ‘The
Magical Land of Musica’. The play is a basic
theory lesson which teaches the staff, tonic solfa, rhythm, dynamics and pitch. It is the fun story of the music family, Do Re Mi Fa So La Ti Do
and their adventure on a picnic by the sea.
Much gratitude goes to all the children who participated, the primary staff and the parents. It
was such a pleasure to host the parents who
came out to support the children and appreciate
the growing talent in Chengelo Primary School.

FORM 1 CAMP
We learnt to work together and overcome challenges as a team. We were open minded to
new ideas and new ways of doing things such
as, making a fire without matches, canoeing,
and several other survival skills.
At the end of our camp, each of us had to write
down one word that describes what we learnt.
These were some of the words written down:
trust, friendship, teamwork, courage, love, responsibility, endurance and respect. Overall, it was an amazing camp. We learnt a lot of
things at Ndubaluba and have a
lot of good memories.

FORM 5 LEADERSHIP TRAINING
The whole essence of Leadership training is as
the name suggests; training us as young men
and women to become leaders for the future.
The various challenges we as Form 5’s were
put through taught us not only different leader-
In terms of building character, Leadership training brought out the best and the worst in us; it
simply exposed our strengths and weaknesses
in different challenges which will go a long way
in moulding us into unique leaders with righteous morals. Many of the people in our form
described the challenges as too difficult, but in
the end it taught us how to persevere and endure through the toughest of situations, which in
turn, taught us an even greater trait; Commitment.
We as Form 5’s would like to thank Chengelo
for the opportunity to experience such an engaging trip and most of all we would like to
thank Ndubaluba for the awesome work and
effort they put into our leadership week.
Through giving us this opportunity, they have
given us a new found perspective in the way we
lead; as Servant Leaders.

ship skills but also how our character contributes to the way in which we lead. Ergo, these
leadership skills helped to develop the different
monitor roles we undertook in the school. The
week was packed with different initiative tasks
all circled around servant leadership, which in
the end culminated in the discovery of the
greatest servant leader of all time; Jesus Christ.
Like the saying goes, “Charity begins at home”,
and through Leadership training we learnt a lot
about ourselves in the fact that it gave us a
KILIMANJARO ARTICLE
I remember sitting in a foreign car, in a foreign
country, gazing at the foreign look of terror in
my granny’s eyes, “Are you sure you want to do
this?” she asked. “Very much!” I replied filled
with euphoria! And thus the journey had begun!
In some ways the Mount Kilimanjaro trip was
less difficult than I thought it was going to be,
but in many more ways it fulfilled my expectations!
The walk on the first day was not too arduous.
chance to reflect, as well as build on who we
are, as leaders in the school and how our decisions may majorly contribute to the wellbeing of
the people around us.
On the contrary, it was quite comfortable. It
helped that the environment was beautiful, the
weather was fair and the atmosphere between
us hikers was lovely.
Day two was slightly more challenging with many uphill and downhill slopes, but the constant chatter and
picturesque scenery kept our moods above water.
However, by the summit day my muscles felt
stretched beyond their years and I remember thinking to myself “What in the world am I doing?”, as we
started our final ascent – and I’m pretty sure I was
not the only one!
The ascent was at its steepest that 1st January 2016
morning and we were physically weary, but somehow we kept going until we made it onto “Gilman’s
Point”! The view from being 5685m high was lovely
and I felt greatly privileged to have made it so far!
Despite my failure to move on towards “Uhuru Peak” (the highest point in Africa), conquering what I
had managed thus far was truly a blessing, and
I felt privileged to be part of the group! The hikers who conquered Uhuru peak were also exceedingly proud and had many stories to tell by
the time we got back to the hotel!
All in all, I believe this taught us all that there is
nothing we can’t accomplish. Afterall, who
would’ve thought that in a humble town, within
a small community hidden within the hills thirteen people would manage to conquer the
highest mountain in Africa!

ADVENTURE CHALLENGE FOR SCHOOLS
2015
Ndubaluba and Chengelo once again successfully hosted the Adventure Challenge for
Schools in December 2015. So much preparation goes into the event regarding the logistics
for the teams, routes and activities. We had 9
teams competing this year from Schools in SA,
Zimbabwe and within Zambia. What is so exciting about hosting the event is all the exChengelo students who come and help out as
officials. Their passion for Adventure Education
lives on! Passion is what this Adventure Challenge is all about, the School teams need plenty
of it not to give up, to work together, to push
themselves to their limits and enjoy the amazing
environment around them. Our aim was also
that the school groups would see our passion
for the Creator of the wonderful Mulungushi
Dam surrounding which has His finger prints all
over it!
We had three Chengelo
teams fighting their way
through the race, the Off
Road Olympians (Ryan
Jackman, Lance Vaughn,
Andrew Schukachev and
Tozia Mutambo) were our
top team and eventually
came
out
4th.
The
Mazembes (which means
Bulldozers!- Berry Chamulonda, Kadi Chinyama ,
Sepeso Kanyanga and
Stella Chanda) had to
drop out as Stella got chicken pox! Waka Waka
(Nick Edmonstone. Nathaniel Falcone, Stephani
Nyambe and Andrew Mwape) our development
squad put in a great display and we look forward to their performances in the future.
It is a very tough
race full of steep
gorge ascents,
hilly
mountain
biking on sandy
tracks, km's of
open water and
river canoeing,
high rock jumps,
rock climbing, problem solving and much
more... Falcon College from Zimbabwe were
the winners, but as we tell the teams the experience and personal development is way more
valuable! We had great support from local and
national sponsors and especially from members
of the Mkushi community. It was a great team
effort and we thank God for His protection and
blessings throughout. Ndubaluba continues to
lead the way in Adventure Education and Training in Zambia. This event recognises Ndubaluba's contribution not only in Zambia but also
within Southern Africa. May God continue to
use the Centre and events such as ACS for His
purposes and glory.

GRADE 7 CAMP AT NDUBALUBA
The engine of the
bus for Ndubaluba
roared as all the
happy campers set
off on an adventure.
What would they
find there? Activities, mysteries and
possibly monkeys,
they all thought. All
were in fine song as
they
travelled
through the farm
roads for 5 days of
intense fun and energy sapping tasks.
They all knew that
being clean was
something that they left at Chengelo Primary
and this was obvious as they stepped off the
bus whiter than white. Who knew how wet and
grimy they would get? The instructors knew
very well as the first series of activities got the
children revved up in team spirit, unity and
some dust too. Food was gobbled down to recharge each person each day to ensure that
they were raring to go.
All plates were left sparkling as the scrumptious
food filled bellies left not a morsel behind.
Challenges such as the Medic Race, caused
each team to show unity and effort to get to the
very end.
Teachers (TTT) Conference was hosted by the
American International School of Lusaka on
Saturday 13th February. Upon arrival the delegation was asked to register their desired workshops. After registration, all were treated to a
cup of coffee and the opportunity to network
with teachers from across the country.
Themed ‘Designing Learning’ the TTT kicked off
with welcoming remarks from the Host School.
Soon delegates were off to their workshop sessions which covered many aspects of school life
including: Performing Arts, language, literacy,
numeracy among others. The wealth of experiences that teachers shared with other teachers
was phenomenal.
Through the challenges that everyone overcame, God was always with all present, refining
each person more and more.

CAMBRIDGE MATHS COMES TO CHENGELO PRIMARY
This term at Chengelo, we have debuted Cambridge Primary Maths. This package is an innovative combination of curriculum and resources
that supports teachers and learners through
best-practice international maths teaching and a
problem solving approach. This package brings
together the world class Cambridge Primary
curriculum from Cambridge International Examinations, high-quality publications from Cambridge University Press and further enrichment
activities. The resources include Cambridge
Primary Textbooks, Games and Activities and
Teachers books.
Children have enjoyed being a lot more 'hands
on' with their maths having a lot more discussion over how things work and why. Each
classroom is buzzing with different learning
styles being met and encouraged.

THE ISAZ TEACHERS TEACHING TEACHERS CONFERENCE
The 2016 Independent Schools Association of
Zambia’s (ISAZ) annual Teachers Teaching
After lunch, all the delegates were once again
summoned into the Tiyende Pamodzi Theatre
where a TED Talk was broadcast on the innovation of a young Kenyan boy whose invention
is preserving the lives and livestock of the Masai living in the national parks from lion attacks.
His story was shown to inspire teachers to allow
children to learn through discovery, learn from
their mistakes, apply critical thinking and press
towards a better solution. The third session was
held soon after. Chengelo was proud to show
case the talents of Mr. Elton Nyirenda and Mr.
John Chen who provided entertainment for the
delegates as the day closed.

LESSON OBSERVATIONS
At Chengelo School, we carry out three formal
observations each term for all teachers. The
Principal carries out the first observations
across the school accompanied by the relevant
Head teacher. When we observe teachers in
the classroom, we are looking in detail at the
quality of teaching and in particular the progress
made by all students in the lesson. We have
seen some superb teaching during this period
and it makes us as management really proud
when we consider how much teaching has improved over the years. A big thank you to all our
staff, who we know feel a lot of pressure from
these observations. This level of monitoring is
part of our school’s commitment to delivering an
outstanding education to all our students.

Ndubaluba Outdoor Centre warmly congratulates the newly married Mr Mwila (Instructor)
and welcomes Mrs Alice Mwila. Ndubaluba has
greatly
appreciated
Rebecca
Hodgins
(Volunteer) and Edward Land (Gap Student)
who have been an excellent addition to the
Centre.
Finally Chengelo School is exceedingly proud to
have former student and Head
boy Chigomezo Kawonga helping in the Primary School as
well as Gap year student Nicholas Johnson who had the following to say:
“My name is Nicholas Johnson
and I am the new Gap Year
Student working in the Primary
School at Chengelo. I come
from New Zealand and went to
St John’s School in Hamilton.
St John’s was a Marist school
though the order itself no longer
taught at the school when I attended. At school I was involved in the choir, concert
band and participated in the school production.
I played football in the social team at school and
have been involved with various swimming
clubs for most of my life and was involved with
surf-lifesaving NZ.”
We would like to extend a heartfelt welcome to
all the new members of staff this term. Our
prayer is that Chengelo will feel like home to
you and that the Lord will greatly be glorified
through the work you do here as you continue
to faithfully serve Him.
THE PRIMARY RUM DOODLE ADVENTURE
RACE
This year’s event was held on the afternoon of
8th February and attracted a total of twenty six
participants (boys and girls) from our Grades 5,
6 and 7 classes. Each of these enthusiastic and
energetic aspiring Rum Doodlers had to complete assigned tasks such as: The Zambezi
Ropes course, the Chengelo main Ropes
course, Swimming and the most challenging of
them all, cycling to the bottom of the hill and
getting to the Cross at the top where the secret
password was to be fetched! Participants were
encouraged to work in pairs and keep encouraging each other along the way as they encountered different obstacles.
Time ticked and the fun got to its climax, cheers
were echoed by the spectators but tasks were
not yet completed by most participants! Soaked
in their own sweat, before getting to the swimming pool, these boys and girls persevered until
they had to be stopped due to time limit.
Congratulations to the pairs that finished within
the specified time frame: Darryl & Dylan, Aiden

NORTHERN REGION ZONE 2 SCHOOLS IN
FOOTBALL AND NETBALL
CHENGELO - ISAZ RUGBY 7’S WINNERS
2016
Chengelo had the privilege of hosting the first
games for the Northern Region Zone 2 schools
in football and netball. With only three weeks to
prepare for the games after all of that Christmas
pudding, the boys and girls were in for a lot of
hard work. The zone is made up of Ndola Trust
School, Simba School, Nsansa Trust School
and the hosts Chengelo. The games were held
on Saturday 30th January 2016 with games in
girls’ football, boys’ football and girls’ netball.
The new format allows for teams to play more
games as well as provide a practical means for
seeding teams at the Northern Region games
which act as qualifiers to the national event,
which this year will be hosted by Chengelo. The
games went on very well, Chengelo teams putting in some good performances.
On Saturday 13th February, Chengelo took a
strong Rugby 7’s squad to compete in the ISAZ
Rugby 7’s Tournament, hosted by Simba
School, Ndola.
It was a fantastic day of very competitive school
boy rugby. Chengelo performed extremely well
right from the start. They soon imposed themselves as one of the strongest sides in the competition with an excellent defensive game, shutting teams down and stifling their attacking opportunities. As the tournament progressed
Chengelo’s attacking flair began to show. They
drew their first game but went on to win all the
others, topping the points scored, and points
difference tables by some margin. The squad is
oozing ability and enthusiasm and, with some
more hard work and dedication, we look forward
to more success in the future.
Our thanks to the Hosts Simba School and Mr
Dongo for yet another well-run Tournament and
to our opponents for the competitive games and
friendly rivalry.

Chengelo Squad:
Front Row; left to right: Mukosa Chakufyali (vc),
Sambazya Ngulube, Kuchile Mafulilwa (c),
Nkole Nkowani. Back Row; left to right: Mr Foster, Andrew Ross (awarded ‘Young Player of
the team’), Chikuni Zimba, Kulucheta Chizyuka,
Ndanji Simumba, Musenya Ngoma, Munalula
Lisimba, Isaac Banda, Dalitso Moyo.
In the girls’ football, Chengelo scored the only
goal of the game literally from their first attempt
at goal from the centre start. Well done to Liseli
Musokotwane for that single goal in the game.
They went on to beat Simba by the same margin and the goal coming from Liseli again. Their
last match against Ndola Trust was much more
competitive and ended level with a 0 – 0 score
line. Credit must be given to the girls for finishing top in the games on this day.
Our girls’ netball team equally did well on the
day. While the team is in the process of rebuilding, the new and inexperienced players courageously competed for honours and accounted
for themselves very well. They thrashed Nsansa
18 – 1 and went on to beat a determined Ndola
Trust team 17 – 1. Their last match against
Simba started on a shaky note. However, they
still managed to win the game 14 – 5, Simba
providing the greatest opposition for the girls on
the day.
The Chengelo boys’ football team were in for
stiffer competition from the visiting school especially that Ndola Trust were the Northern Region defending champions and Chengelo were
the runners up at national level. Their first game
against Nsansa was a parade of numerous missed chances until the second half when Chengelo
managed to get four goals past the Nsansa goal keeper. However, signs were clear on the day that
the Chengelo team needed to up the defence as Nsansa managed to score two of their own.
Against, Simba, Chengelo had to catch up on two occasions to finish the game level at 2 – 2. The
main game was really against Ndola Trust. This time, it was Ndola Trust that had to do the catching
up. After a very well contested match, the game finished 2 – 2, Ndola Trust equalising five minutes
from time. Chengelo finished the day as overall winners in all three categories and were now looking
forward to the return leg in Ndola in the following week.
The return matches were totally different from the first leg an can rightly be described as mixed. In
boys’ football, Chengelo gave away their lead after a Luyando Mukuni goal to finish the game at 1 –
1. Their second game was a well-executed performance against the hosts Simba School. Chengelo
dominated the game from start to finish and won the match 3 – 0. Goals coming from Luyando Lisimba, Munalula Lisimba and Sambazya Ngulube in that order. Chengelo unfortunately lost their final game to Ndola Trust and ended the day in second position but thankfully were first overall after
two legs on account of a better goal difference.
The netball girls’ team were still struggling to settle into the games and after more than ten years of
the games’ existence, Chengelo dropped a game and this time it was against the hosts Simba. The
final score, 7 – 8 to Simba. They did however manage to beat Nsansa and Ndola Trust by 9 - 1 and
17 – 0 respectively. They like the boys’ team finished as overall winners with a superior goal difference.
While the girls only managed to score one goal against Nsansa, through Liseli Musokotwane, they
went on to beat the hosts Simba by the largest scoreline on the day. 4 – 0. Goals came from Liseli
Musokotwane (2), Stella Chanda (1) and Virginia Sondashi (1). Liseli Musokotwane went on to
score another two goals, the only goals of the match when Chengelo beat the Ndola Trust girls’
team by 2 – 0. Well done to all the Chengelo teams and to Liseli Musokotwane for coming out as
the tournament’s top goals scorer.
The teams now look forward to the Northern Region Championships to be hosted by Simba when all
the schools based on the Copperbelt, plus Chengelo will battle for a top four finish in each category
for qualification to the ISAZ National games at Chengelo.
We wish the Chengelo teams every success in the coming games.

THE 2016 NORTHERN REGION ISAZ CROSS-COUNTRY
The 2016 Northern Region ISAZ
Cross-country was held at Baobab
College in Lusaka on the 6th of
February. This famous and competitive event attracted a total of
sixteen schools that featured in different age group categories ranging from the Under 10 to the Under
19 boys and girls teams. There are
two separate categories within this
range of age groups, namely the
Juniors (U10, U12 and U14) and
the Seniors (U16 and U19). Unfortunately, Chengelo was only able to
take the U10 and U12 teams which
was incomplete even in the juniors
category. Despite that being the
case, it was gratifying to have
Chengelo placed in 3rd position overall. In the junior boys and junior girls’ categories, our teams
came out 3rd and 4th place respectively.
Natasha Malokota came out first in the U12 girls’ category with time record of 7 minutes and 27 seconds and was followed in second place by Natasha Bwalya who had 7 minutes and 53 seconds. In
the U12 boys’ category, Emmanuel Bangala led with time record of 6minutes and 37 seconds and
was closely followed by Emmanuel Mbumwae of Lwengu School. At the end of that breath-taking
run, Emmanuel Bangala bathed in his sweat acknowledged Emmanuel Mbumwae by the words:
“the boy is good”! In the U10 girls’ category, Grace Ngungu, beaten in the last 15 metres, recorded
6 minutes and 81 seconds, 25 seconds behind the winner from Musikili School.
There were some schools however, like Lwengu, Chalo Trust, Italian, Lake Road and the host Baobab College that managed to have all age group categories take part. And because of that they had
great chances of taking the day after the event as was the case with Chalo Trust that was crowned
the 2016 Northern Region ISAZ Cross-country champions.
Job well done to Chengelo team and a big thank you to all parents who were offered a lot of encouragement and support to the students.
