Living Word Academy Newsletter I Love you Lord Jesus, You good D are e cso em b etorus!! 2013 April 2014 IMPORTANT REMINDER A reminder to parents of students in grades 3—8 that even though the NYS Exams for ELA & Math are listed on our school calendar, we are no longer giving the NYS Assessment Exams in grades 3—8. The confusion, the controversy and the poor planning on the part of the NYS Education Department caused us to eliminate the assessments. In lieu of the assessments, classroom teachers in grades three through six will be implementing the use of portfolio assessments to record the progress of their students from year to year. Students in grades seven and eight will be taking the TereNova Common Core achievement tests in reading, writing, language, mathematics, science and social studies. Both of these assessment procedures will begin in May of 2015. 9th Grade Orientation Program for 8th Graders All 8th grader students and their parents are invited to attend a 9th grade orientation meeting on Tuesday, April 15th in the school cafeteria @ 7:00. The purpose of the meeting is to provide students and parents with information about the high school program, graduation requirements, and also to register for 9th grade classes in the fall. Home/School Partnership in Learning Volume 18 The topic this month is “How important is Learning Vocabulary?, written by Sister Diane Knack. SPRING BREAK Spring Break this year will begin on Friday, April 18th. Students will return to school on Monday, April 28th. Have a safe and pleasant vacation. Recently we have had a number of study hall monitors indicate that there are several students in their classes who frequently show disrespect for their authority; ignore what they are asked to do; and cause the teacher to reprimand them multiple times without any change in their behavior. Several students also are non-cooperative during SSR and constantly have to be asked to quiet down and read. These problems need to be corrected. To address these problems the following measures will be taken: I have asked every study hall monitor to identify the students who constantly show them the most disrespect and ignore their directives. The identified students will be taken out of the major study hall class and placed in small groups in various classrooms in our academy. This correction will continue for the next five weeks. If I believe they have learned this important lesson of compliance and respect for authority, they will be restored to their original study hall. However, if they persist in being uncooperative they will face more serious consequences. These are serious problems that have been worsening over the course of the year that need to be strictly addressed. I ask for your support and cooperation in addressing these problems and I ask you, is your son or daughter showing disrespect for you as their parent? Do you have to repeat your request for them to do something multiple times before they respond? Are they giving you a sour attitude? If this is the case you need to correct this problem at home and appropriately discipline them. The church and the school are here to support you, not to be the parent for you. Together, and with the Lord’s wisdom and help, we can teach them to be selfdisciplined and restrained. Thank you, Brother Phil SENIOR FUND RAISERS Get ready to see some flowers soon!! Sponsored by Crouse Hospital, the program exposes 1st graders to hospital life. Jonathan Mazur was admitted to the hospital for a tonsillectomy. But not to worry, Surgeons Caleb Prosser and Zion Heron came to the rescue! After a time of play-acting an actual hospital admission, we were able to push a wheelchair and a stretcher, hear a heartbeat with a stethoscope and operate a hospital bed! Thank you Hospital-Land for a great field trip! 1st Grade shares their writing about LWA staff members: Jonathan Mazur writes: Sister Latrelle: You make the best luchis You are the Best Lucher LaDY! Living Word Academy Newsletter Page 3 Spring Concerts Please note: Beginning this spring all music concerts will be held in the Gymnasium. There will be two concerts for the Spring and two concerts for the Christmas programs. One performance will be for children in grades K—6 and the other concert performance will be for students in grades 7—12. We believe the change in setting and the division by grade level will improve our ability to provide a more enjoyable musical experience. Specific dates will be announced at a later date. The LWA Art room is still in need of an elementary art teacher for grades 1 & 2, starting September 2014!! Please consider this as an opportunity where you could be of service to the Lord. See Sister Mary Therese Bailey or Brother Phil if you are interested.
