October 1st was another great day for
golf and Lake Presidential was the
perfect host for Prince George’s
Chamber of Commerce Golf
Tournament. There were over 140
golfers in attendance along with an
array of celebrity figures at the event.
The 8am shotgun made for an eventful
start and as the players worked their
way to the halfway point of their
rounds, the sun met them and there
were some dramatic finishes.
The atmosphere had its PGA moments
and brought out the competitive nature
among the groups. The winning group
came into the clubhouse with a 58 on
the card and there were other solid
scores to go along with theirs. Former
Original Harlem Globetrotter, Choo
Smith, and former NFL running back, Ricky Ervins were paired up for the tournament and they
helped their team bring in a solid scorecard of their own, shooting a 71 on the day and finishing 1
under par.
That score doesn’t do them justice though. Ricky didn’t only come dressed as if he was paired
with Tiger Woods, but he also brought his game with him too, hitting some very impressive
shots throughout the tournament. Choo also contributed. I’m not sure if it was his spontaneity
when it came to handing out nicknames or his approach shots that left his team with birdie and
eagle opportunities. Whatever the case may be, the Globetrotter in him came to life on some
crucial holes. He thought he impressed the field last week at Woodholme Country Club, but he
arrived to Lake Presidential with bigger plans.
After the tournament, there was a lunch reception, which showed appreciation to those who
participated in this years tournament. Dave Ungrady put a highlight on the celebrities that
showed their support, the sponsors, and golfers who came out for some healthy competition for a
good cause.
Choo Smith was one of several celebrities that received a warm introduction during the
reception. He was shown appreciation for his time on the basketball court as well as his
contribution to the community, which to him is the most important thing in life.
