Dear Parents and Carers, ATHLETICS CARNIVAL – 9th June Please return notes Due to wet weather our Athletics Carnival will now be held on Thursday 9th June at Chapman Oval. A permission note was sent home today and I urge parents to return this as soon as possible. Thank you to parents who have volunteered their time to assist. The canteen will be providing sausage sandwiches/ sausage rolls and other goodies for sale on the day but please note no meal deal. We look forward to seeing you there and let’s hope we have lovely weather! NAIDOC WEEK Although the official NAIDOC week is in July we are celebrating this week. NAIDOC Week celebrates the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. NAIDOC is celebrated not only in Indigenous communities but by all Australians. This is a great opportunity for our students to participate in activities to support our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community. We thank year 3 and Mrs Townsley for a wonderful NAIDOC assembly today. We will have photos in next week's newsletter. PLAYGROUND UPGRADE We are all very excited that our works are underway for our new outdoor surfaces. I would like to thank students for their cooperation and patience while some areas of our playground have been closed. Once work is completed we will be line marking the basketball court and adding some handball squares for students to enjoy. PARLIAMENT OF YOUTH Congratulations to our six ministers for Farrer Primary and the Parliament of Youth on Monday. Their idea,titled ‘Sprinkle, Sprinkle’, was to implement a rooftop garden system on Canberra’s flat roofed buildings. Their presentation included speeches, a model and a video to showcase their idea. In the morning session, our students presented their idea along with 7 other primary school groups. Their peers voted their idea as one of the best to present to the full parliament later that day. Ethan had to quickly prepare to speak for one minute to the full parliament of almost 300 students. In the audience were also members from the ACT government, Simon Corbell, Shane Rattenbury and Nicole Lawder. He did a great job presenting and his team gave out popcorn seeds, grown in our Environment Centre gardens as a promotion for the idea. The idea, ‘Sprinkle, sprinkle’, was not chosen as one of the six finalists at the end of the day, however Ethan will have a chance to present his team’s idea at the Legislative Assembly on the 15th June. I was very proud to have these six outstanding students represent Farrer Primary. They spoke well and presented themselves well throughout the day. Well done to Amanda, Tilly, Hadi, Luke, Elleri and Ethan. A very big thank you to Mrs Elliot for organizing this event. RIDE OR WALK TO SCHOOL PROGRAM Farrer Primary School is in its 2nd year of the Ride or Walk to School Program.The Program encourages students to ride or walk to and from school. Riding and walking are great ways for students to get some exercise every day. Next week our Year 3 and 4 classes will participate in self‐defence workshops at school. This is one aspect of the program and it aims to educate the students about personal safety skills which can be used when walking or riding to school. ACT Health would like to know what parents of students in years 4, 5 and 6 think about students riding or walking to school. The information collected will be anonymous and will be used to inform future policies and actions aimed at encouraging active travel to school in Canberra. Next Monday we also have our Year 5 combined band practice so please remember to bring your instruments to school. Good luck also to Jessica Tonna who was chosen as our school Rostrum winner and will be representing Farrer Primary at the quarter finals on Tuesday. Celebrating those heroes of community hockey Author: Lawrence West/Monday, 23 May 2016/Categories: Hockey Australia News, Destination Hockey, National Hockey Week Ahead of National Hockey Week, which begins on Saturday 28th May, we’re profiling some of the individuals whose contribution to hockey in their local area makes them a Hockey Hero. They are being recognised for their role in either growing the game, promoting hockey or facilitating the enjoyment or development of others. Our first Hockey Hero is Kate Elliot from Tuggeranong Vikings Women’s Hockey Club, ACT. Well done, Kate! Name: Kate Elliot Hockey Hero of: Tuggeranong Vikings Women’s Hockey Club, ACT Hockey Hero super powers: Dedication to inclusion, excellence and junior development Kate Elliot is a shining example of what being a Hockey Hero is all about. As a new member of Tuggeranong Vikings four years ago when she joined the club with her young daughter, Kate immediately put up her hand to play her part in the development of the children coming through the ranks. Kate, a school teacher, was nominated as a Hockey Hero by club president, Joe Henstock. After beginning her time as the coach of the Under 11 girls, which she did for two years, Kate is now coach of the Under 13s. “Her players follow her every word and their parents have nothing but praise for Kate as a coach,” says Joe. “Reports come back to our committee about how wonderful she is with the children; how well she speaks to them and the fact that she treats every child as equals. Parents report that when their child is down or upset, Kate goes out of her way to comfort the child and she can always find something about the girl’s game to congratulate her on.” While a child’s experience is far more important than results at junior level, Kate’s team has enjoyed remarkable success, going undefeated in two of the past three years. There is no doubt in Joe’s mind that the on‐field success has come as a direct result of the way Kate interacts with her young team and the respect they have for her and each other. “The players’ respect for Kate is shown in their attendance at training. Kate’s team is always the one with the most players at training and our club committee has been flooded with requests from parents to see if their child can be coached by her.” Based on her previous form, it was of little surprise that Kate was one of the first to put her name down when Hockey ACT put out the call for volunteers to serve its junior competition committee. As a committee member and as a manager and assistant coach for Hockey ACT’s Junior Regional Hockey Program, her commitment to junior development and inclusion is now delivering benefits to the wider ACT hockey community. way, the mum who made the pop cakes - they ran out the door….they looked amazing!
ATHLETICS CARNIVAL – new date: Thursday 9th June
The revised date is for next Thursday. The canteen WILL TRADE ON THE DAY at Chapman oval and we
will have counter treats, drinks, a sausage sizzle, sausage rolls and a few burgers available. No formal
lunch orders will be taken on this day as all food is for sale over the counter. If there are any bakers
out there, we would love some home bake to sell on the day…….. please drop into the canteen anytime.
It would also be much appreciated if we could have 2 or 3 parents on the day to help in the canteen
between 9.30am and 12.00pm
CANCELLING ONLINE ORDERS
If your child is sick or unable to attend school you can cancel your order online before 8.30am. After this time you
need to call the canteen directly or the school front office to cancel the order by 9am. If you don’t cancel you will be
charged.

New opening hours
The Farrer Uniform Shop will open on MONDAYS
instead of Wednesdays. Our opening hours
remain the same from 3.10pm to 4pm (we like to
have ten minutes to get our children sorted
before opening). A reminder that you can order by
downloading the order form from the SchoolBag app
or collect from the front office and email it to us at
farreruniformshop@gmail.com or leave in the
letterbox at the front office. Orders will be filled as
soon as possible and delivered to your child’s
classroom.

Volunteer Needed
FUS needs a new volunteer to help with shop sales on Monday afternoons from 3.10pm to
3.30pm to help with the initial rush. The only criteria is you need to be slightly crazy and put up
with Shikha and Deborah’s antics. Oh, and like to eat chocolate cake.

Farrer P&C news We have had an encouraging number of responses to the P&C communication form, but would love more—please keep sending them back to school so we can include you in P&C happenings. We hope it can be a great way to keep in contact with our community. If you’ve misplaced your family form just email us at pandcfarrer@gmail.com. We would also appreciate further nominations for parent representatives for classes—Echidnas, KL, 3M, 4Q, and Mac are still open for rep volunteers. Plus, if you would like to put your name forward for a class that already has a representative that would still be fabulous; either to give us multiple points of contact, or to share the load with some parents who have offered for more than one class. The Federal election on 2 July is fast approaching and we are hoping to tap into the broader geographic community to fundraise on the day. Calling all craftspeople, master chefs, candlemakers and general entrepreneurs to let us know if you have ideas for supplementing a sausage sizzle stall!! Email us your ideas at pandcfarrer@gmail.com. Thanks also to those who have volunteered to help with the Term 3 disco; we will shortly put out a call for specific organisational tasks and roles on the night. As always, email us with anything that interests you—community events, education policies, family matters, social opportunities and similar. We always want to hear about issues for discussion and enquiry in our school and local community. If you are paying by cash can you please give exact money OSHClub News Sabrina is now back from her four week trip to China. She showed the children the pictures from her trip and shared the interesting travel stories with them. The children were so fascinated with a country on the other side of the world. We explored the culture together by researching its landscape, people and festivals. Some children even initiated cooking fried rice and eating it with chopsticks. We have taken advantage of the beautiful Autumn season. We invited the children to look for gorgeous looking fallen leaves. We appreciate so much what mother nature has brought to us. The children made Autumn art collage ‐Autumn in my eyes. .
It was so lovely to see families come to OSHclub and teach the children how to make paper airplane kites. We welcome all the parents, grandparents, uncles and aunties to visit us if you have spare time and some talented skills. We are looking for YOU to show us some tips and tricks in sewing, cross‐stitching, woodwork, gardening, pottery and dancing. We look forward to seeing you! Sabrina and the OSHclub team
