Special points of interest: Volume 23, Number 1 February/March 2016 Since the Don of Man Activity Reports Coming Events Club Regalia Officers & Affiliates Treasure’s Report Classifieds SINCE THE DON OF MAN I hope you all had a wonderful holiday and are settling down to a new year. December was nice and warm, but typical frigid January temperatures are here now. We had a nice turn out at our Christmas party. The food was good, but unfortunately, the Tambellini Restaurant in Bridgeville is now closed. It will reportedly become a micro-brewery called the Rail Yard. So perhaps we can have an MG drive with that as a destination in the future. At a club staff meeting, we went over the club mailing list and deleted a number of persons who were still receiving the MG Crier but who had not paid club dues in more than a year. Those who had paid dues last year but have not done so this year will have a red check on the mailing label, and a dues renewal reminder in the envelope. We hope you find membership in the Greater Pittsburgh MG Club helpful, and we always urge you to attend our events, even if you do not have a drive-able MG, or even an MG at all. Our next event is one of the social highlights of the year, our Soup Party. MG CRIER G R E A T ER P I T T SB U R G H M G C L U B Does anyone else have a winter MG project going on? I have the engine out of my MGB, fixing valve seals and some of the typical oil leaks which inevitable crop up over the years. It looks like the main culprit is leaking tappet covers. I'll try the silicone rubber gaskets which are now available. The original plain rubber ones were pretty hard. Georges D’Eon is also making good headway on his MGB GT. He's hoping to get it driving this year, but thinks it may drag into next year. If you are working on your MG and have technical questions, please feel free to give me a call. I may not know the answer, but may also be able to direct you to someone else who can help. Hope to see you at the Soup Party and our Spring Tech Sessions. Regards, Don Stewart Don’s Engine Rebuild Georges’ Front Suspension & Brakes Page 2 MG CRIER ACTIVITY REPORT John was telling his friend how his uncle tried to make a new car for himself… “So he took wheels from an MG, a radiator from a Spitfire, some panels and bumpers from a TR6…” “Holy Cow,” interrupted his friend, “What did he end up with?” And John replied, “Two years and probation.” Christmas Party This was our last Christmas party to be held at Tambellini’s in Bridgeville. As Don pointed out in his message that this location has closed, and we will be looking for a new location for next years event. This year was once again well attended with Tambellini’s providing a tasty buffet for our attending members, and we held the annual gift exchange. And with the fair weather, two members showed up with their MG’s. Thanks to Chuck and Cindy Keller for arranging the event and brining the cake. We took the time also to thank George Kress for his years as past President of the club, and as a reminder, Don created a plaque to commemorate his leadership time. PUB NIGHT Pub Night went well. The turnout was low due to the snow, (17 members vs. our usual 25 30) but we had a good time none the less. Bill's pub quiz was a bit tougher than last year. There were two parts, 12 questions on history and 13 on general knowledge. We had 3 teams of 5 and team #1 won. The team 1 winners were Suzanne, Jay, George, Beth and Jeannie. The winning team took home gift cards for Starbucks. Looking to next year if any members have a suggestion as to an alternate venue please let me know via email at wakirk@live.com - Keep in mind pubs with big screen TV’s have led to problems in the past. Bill Kirk & Don Stewart Volume 23, Page 3 COMING EVENTS SOUP PARTY Sunday, February 21st Please join us for the 2016 Soup Party. Hosted by Cindy, Bud, Carol and Jay at the Galbreath’s home; 40 Caldwell Rd., Hickory, PA 15340. This year the event will be BYOB, so be sure to bring your beverage of choice. We will provide two soups, salad and bread. Please also bring an appetizer (if you are apt to arrive early) or dessert (if you will be coming a little later). We hope to see you rain, snow or shine at 1PM. Please RSVP to Cindy at cindy-oz@hotmail.com. TECH SESSION #1 Saturday March 19th Beginning at 10 AM, Bud Osbourne is hosting our first tech session for the year. It will be held at his workshop, located at 240 Southview Road, McDonald, 15057. I’ll be working on my ’74 BGT restoration and will be rebuilding the left, rear quarter, LR inner wheel arch, left sill (all four panels) and the bottom of the LF fender, so there should be plenty to see. I’ll be taking pictures of every step & detail along the way, so I’ll be sure and have several photos printed on large paper, to illustrate what may already be covered-up. I can, also, bring a couple of Spridget projects in, to give everyone a good idea of what they look like, when they’re taken apart and the proper sequence for reassembling the body, so that the original seams are preserved and LOOK ORIGINAL. So come on out, it’s fun and educational. MG 2016 Louisville Kentucky June 13th - 17th Plans for MG2016 in Louisville are progressing. We have 6 MG’s committed so far. Our tentative plan is to leave Pittsburgh June 12th and drive about halfway with an overnight stop. We will then complete the trip on June 13th. in time for registration and the Opening Ceremonies at Churchill Downs at 6PM. The return trip will start Friday June 17th and complete on Saturday June 18th traveling a somewhat different route. The trip is about 430 miles one way. We are considering taking the scenic byway Rt. 7 that follows the Ohio river to Athens on the way down and staying somewhere yet to be determined with evening entertainment. Rt. 22 is another option we may use on the way back. Anybody who is interested is required to register on the MG2016 web site for activities and hotel rooms during the week. https://www.signup4.net/public/ap.aspx?EID=MG2014E&OID=50 Registration is required to reserve a room. Over 1000 MG’s are headed to Louisville, so early registration will ensure you get the hotel and activities desired. There is an events diary on the web site with daily activities to choose from including tech sessions, dinners, drives, car show and banquet. There are also full day bus trips to the Corvette Museum/factory, and a Kentucky Bourbon tour. Anyone who is interested is welcome to join.
