OUR SAVIOR FAMILY
Where We are and Where We Could be Soon.
APPROACHING THE UNKNOWN
WE GO TOGETHER - FORWARD IN FAITH
~ PART 3 ~
Is almighty God in His love and goodness
leading us to a growth and revitalization
phase of ministry? Is He granting us the rare
privilege of erecting some special facilities to
His great glory and for the purpose of more
fully being His Church in our community?
We intend, by the grace of God, to discover if
He is leading us in the direction of
refurbishing our current facility as well as
erecting additional space that could be used
for the specific purpose of being missional
through our early childhood center. A newly
remodeled facility will instill in us and our
community that this is God’s campus and that
we as His caretakers are updating it for
expanding ministry opportunities to our
community.
Desired Space Requirements
Canopy / Atrium
As we move forward in faith certain aspects
and abilities of our expansion will become
more obvious. Our current floor plan shows a
new covered main entrance. There will be a
canopy that reaches out over the driveway so
we will be able to drop off our loved ones and
not have to worry about the weather. We
will enter into a new atrium that is open and
bright.
This area is designed to be a
welcoming focal point for everyone entering
our campus.
Office Relocation / Courtesy Counter
As you enter the atrium our offices will be
immediately to your left. The location of our
offices functions as a welcome center. The office
area will be lined with windows as well as a ten
foot courtesy counter. This counter will be an
open wall concept so everyone passing by will
have an opportunity to be visibly and verbally
greeted by our ministry staff. The pre-school
office will be united with the church offices so
we can intentionally strengthen and align our
ministry goals. This office layout will give the
ministry staff up to four personal contacts with
the pre-school families on a daily basis.
1) In the morning when they enter to bring
their child to class,
2) again when the parents leave for the day,
3) when they return to pick up their child,
4) again when they and their child leave for
the evening.
The offices being centrally located as the focal
point of entry to the building will allow for more
and deeper relationships to be formed between
the ministry staff and all the pre-school families.
Early Childhood Space
The new facilities include 2 classrooms for each
of the age groups we are looking to serve. We
will have 2 infant rooms, 2 toddler rooms as well
as 2 new classrooms for our expanding pre-school
program. One of the main reasons for adding
infants and toddlers is so we can have more time
getting to know the families we serve. Currently
our pre-school children are with us for about two
.

years or so. When these families first enroll in the
pre-school it takes about a year for them to get to
know the ministry staff - mainly because our
offices are not connected. By the time they are
comfortable with us they are also getting ready for
their children to leave as they will be entering
kindergarten shortly. If we are able to serve
infants and toddlers, as well as, have our offices
centrally located we will have up to 5 years to get
to know and serve these families.
The
opportunities we will have in sharing the Gospel
message with these families are endless.
Large Muscle Room
This large muscle room will set us apart from all
other early childhood centers. With the influx of
new students we will need additional indoor space
for the children to play especially when the
weather keeps them inside. The large muscle room
would be modeled after the concept of a
McDonald’s playland but will have an evangelical
aspect to it. This room will be available to preschool as well as congregational families who
desire to use it for birthday parties or the like.
Just picture a family reserving the room for a
special celebration. They will not only enjoy the
room but they will bring 10-20 other families with
them to celebrate. Everyone will be in love of our
facilities and come to know how Our Savior
provides for their children and our congregational
members.
Lecture Hall / Coatroom
As you enter the atrium and proceed up to our
current lobby you will notice that our old offices
will be restructured to house a coatroom as well as
a new lecture hall. The new coatroom will be
easily located with the added benefit of not
creating a traffic jam in the hallway as we now
.
Where We are and Where We Could be Soon.
have. Our lecture hall will have a variety of uses
as it will have permanent seating for over 60
people. To visitors this room will show them that
we take our biblical studies seriously. This state
of the art classroom will also help inspire further
growth in the faith life of our congregational
members.
Expanded & Refurbished Nursery
As you know our current nursery is difficult for
visitors to locate. Our new nursery will have its
main entrance right from the lobby area showing
visitors we appreciate our young families. The
storage room directly behind the youth counter
was originally built to house a concession stand for
the gym. This will provide us with the ability to
put a doorway where the concession window was
supposed to go. With a refurbished nursery, we
will also be able to use it as a secondary play area
for older infants as well as our toddler classes.
I wish we had more time to talk about the
additional opportunities that are before us. With
God’s assistance all this is possible as well as
creating additional storage space, replace the old
carpet in the library and main floor classrooms,
we will freshen up our lobby and hallway areas
with a new coat of paint so that they match the
new facility, replace our leaky roof, enhance our
landscaping, add a new sound system in the gym,
etc., etc., the possibilities are endless.
This project has many ministry opportunities that
will be a blessing for all. I hope that this article
gives you more to pray about because God is
providing us with a great opportunity to move
forward in faith so we can do immeasurably more.
In Jesus’ Name;
Pastor Mike
The mission of Our Savior Pre-School ministry is
to provide children within our community an
opportunity to grow in God’s grace in a caring
environment that promotes the development of
their whole being.”
Next month. We will take a glimpse of
all the ministry opportunities that
God may be providing us with
this new building project.

Quiz Time!
You don’t actually have to take this quiz. Just read it straight through and you’ll get the point.
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
Name the five wealthiest people in the world.
Name the last five winners of the Miss America Contest.
Name the last five Nobel or Pulitzer Prize winners.
Name five Academy Award winners for best actor or actress.
Name the last five World Series winners.
How did you do? The point is, none of us remember the headliners of yesterday. These are no second-rate
achievers. They are the best in their fields, but the applause dies, awards tarnish, achievements are forgotten,
accolades and certificates are buried with their owners.
Here’s another quiz. See how you do on this one:
1.

3.
4.
5.
List a few teaches who aided your journey through school.
Name five people who have taught you something worthwhile.
Think of a few people who made you feel appreciated.
Think of five people you enjoy spending time with.
List a few pastors who have helped you grow spiritually stronger.
Easier? The lesson – the people who make a difference in your life are not the ones with the most credentials,
the most money, or awards. They are the ones that care. Do you think you made the list for someone else?
A Daily Prayer
“Dear Lord, so far today I’ve done
alright. I haven’t gossiped, haven’t lost
my temper, haven’t been greedy,
grumpy, nasty, selfish, or over-indulgent.
I’m very thankful for that. But in a few
minutes, Lord, I’m going to get out of
bed, and from then on I’m probably
going to need a lot more help.
Amen.”
FROM THE VICAR
Well, I have been informed that this is my final opportunity to write to you
in the Scroll, so I want to leave you with a note of thanks and a letter of
encouragement to continue in the work of the Kingdom with your faith in
our Lord Jesus Christ.
First of all, my time here has been an incredible time to grow, learn, and
serve as I prepare for pastoral ministry. Lindsay, Liam, and I have been
blessed to have been part of such a wonderful congregation. Thank you for
welcoming us with such kind hearts and providing us with such
encouragement as we prepare for the road ahead. We will always cherish
our times with the men and women of Our Savior. We have many fond
memories and great experiences that will certainly follow us as we
continue to serve Jesus as we serve others as workers in His Kingdom.
Speaking of the Kingdom, let’s consider the Kingdom of God for a bit. Summer is almost upon us and
by now the seeds are sown in anticipation for the harvest this fall. But, as I have come from a farm,
I know that the work of a farmer is never really done, at least not until the crops have been
harvested, dried, and put into the bins for storage to be sold or turned into feed. Similarly, the
work of a Christian is not complete until the day that Christ calls us home or returns to make all
things new. So let’s just take a look at our place in all of this—our place in the Kingdom of God,
under the reign of Christ.
In order to look closer, we turn to The Parable of the Sower in Matthew 13:1-9; 18-23 (NIV):
1
That same day Jesus went out of the house and sat by the lake. 2 Such large crowds gathered
around him that he got into a boat and sat in it, while all the people stood on the shore. 3 Then he
told them many things in parables, saying: “A farmer went out to sow his seed. 4 As he was
scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. 5 Some fell on rocky
places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. 6 But
when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no
root. 7 Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants. 8 Still other seed fell on
good soil, where it produced a crop—a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown. 9 Whoever has
ears, let them hear.”
18
“Listen then to what the parable of the sower means: 19 When anyone hears the message about
the kingdom and does not understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in his
heart. This is the seed sown along the path. 20 The one who received the seed that fell on rocky
places is the man who hears the word and at once receives it with joy. 21 But since he has no root,
he lasts only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, he quickly falls
away. 22 The one who received the seed that fell among the thorns is the man who hears the word,
but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke it, making it unfruitful. 23 But the
one who received the seed that fell on good soil is the man who hears the word and understands it.
He produces a crop, yielding a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown.”
This parable, like others of Jesus’ parables, is written to show us something more about God than it
is to show us something about ourselves.
The reign of God is unusual in that unlike a farmer who is careful with where he throws the seed, the
Word of God is cast on all people; some will land along the path, some will land on the rocky places,
some will land among thorns, and some will land on the good soil. The focus of this passage is not to
ask yourself what kind of soil you are or what kind of soil others around you are, but its focus is on
the work of God.
In all that we do, there is hard work to be done for the Kingdom of God. We are called to cast the
seed, the Word of God, the means by which the Holy Spirit creates faith, but God causes the growth.
In time, God will reveal to us what kind of soil it lands on, but despite what we think of others—the
soil—around us, we are called to continue to work as our Savior has commanded us. What we might
find discouraging is that, though we will witness seeds take root, grow, and produce fruit, at other
times we will not and may only see what we might be tempted to call a waste of good seed. Yet this
passage should be far from discouraging to us because it is actually an encouragement to realize that
it is God who is doing the work and not us, ourselves. The Word is not broken and God produces the
growth. The Lord reminds us Isaiah 55:8, “‘For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are my
ways your ways,’ declares the Lord.” God is gracious in providing an opportunity for faith,
regardless of what kind of soil may receive it. As God’s blessed and chosen people we are called to
enjoy our Christian freedom from the slavery of sin in our world and obey Jesus command to be
faithful and to spread the Word.
There is a promise in Isaiah 55:10-15 that the seed bears fruit, but in Jesus’ Parable of the Sower,
the seeds that fall along the path, on rocky places, or among the thorns do not bear fruit, and yet
the seed that falls on the good soil bears much fruit! This parable is strange in regards to how a
farmer plants because no farmer simply scatters his seed all over the place with out any thought to
where it is placed, but here Jesus is speaking of the reign of God. He tells us that the reign of God
and the spreading of the Word which delivers the seed of faith works just like this, and yet only God
knows the kind of soil on which the Word scattered. It is by grace that God alone knows what kind of
soil is out there so that we are not afraid to spread the seed to all people for fear that it is our fault
when the seed does not take root or produce fruit. By looking at the mission field in this way, we
realize that the work we do matters, but God provides the growth and sees that the crop yields a
bountiful harvest. Whether—on our best days—we feel inadequate, overconfident, or somewhere in
between, we are merely called to be faithful in delivering the Word, knowing that God will do the
rest as we faithfully tend the fields and wait to see what God will bring forth from the seeds that
were planted.
Thank you for the encouragement, friendship, and experience that Lindsay, Liam, and I have found
here in St. Charles throughout this past year. God has blessed this congregation and provided many
workers for His kingdom. May you continue to hold firmly to your faith in Christ and continue to do
the sometimes hard work of a sower as you wait to see what God’s mighty Word can and will do,
encouraged that it is the Lord who produces the growth and sees to the increase of what each
scattered seed may someday yield.
In Christ Alone,
Vicar Jason Letsche

Dear Pastor Mike and brothers and sisters in Christ at Our Savior,
It brings Jennifer, Julia, Faith, Elizabeth and I great pleasure to be able to draft this Vicarage Acceptance Letter
for the 2014-2015 Academic Year, to our faithful friends at Our Savior. All thanks and praise go to our Lord and
Savior Jesus Christ. He continues to bless our family with this opportunity to serve Him and the church in the
spirit of Saint Paul, who rejoiced that God had put him into
the ministry.
From our first visit to Our Savior in July 2012, we felt the
love, care, and warmth of our Lord and Savior Jesus in all
the comings and goings of Our Savior. The last two years of
Resident Field Education at Our Savior has been a fast-paced
learning, serving, and growing experience for me as a
Seminarian, as well as for Jennifer and our girls. We have
enjoyed participating in youth and adult events, including the
weekend adult and children retreats, car washes, rummage
sales, Trivia nights, Melodramas, 5K runs, Easter Egg Hunts,
Biggest Loser, and especially the Living Last Suppers.
Faith’s participation in her Rite of Confirmation a couple of
weeks ago will forever connect our family to the joys and
love of Our Savior.
For me personally, Pastor Mike has already been an amazing
mentor and leader over the past two years, and I feel very
fortunate to be able to continue my study, learn to lead, and
serve under Pastor Mike’s leadership. Pastor Mike has
encouraged me to participate in MissionShift, instruct our
Confirmands and High School Youth, lead Adult Bible
Study, Readings in Worship, Liturgy, and Preach. You have
all been very kind and positive to me during that process.
And I will be forever thankful for your patience, especially the Office staff who have proven over and over to be
second to none! Our Savior is a very active and robust congregation focused on spreading the Good News of
Jesus, and I am extremely excited and proud to be part of it.
I pray for the Holy Spirit to continue to lead me in my studies, as well as have Jennifer and our girls grow in their
faith along the paths of our Christian walks here at Our Savior. Please feel free to come to me any time with your
cares, concerns, or questions as we journey along together; witnessing the many new experiences our Lord and
Savior Jesus Christ has in store for us.
In His Stead,
Daniel S. Trempala
From Your Elder – Lee Rohlf
Confirmation should be the great beginning not the end to
involvement in the church. The third of my three sons was
confirmed at Our Savior on Sunday May 4th. It was a wonderful
day celebrating my son’s membership in the church and the
culmination of two years of hard work. The day was bittersweet with
the realization that up to 80% of youth drift away from the church starting on the day of Confirmation. Can we
use this time of celebration as a springboard for broader involvement in the church?
Mark Englehart has put together a dynamic youth program that keeps both Junior and Senior High engaged. I
see the youth coming out of Confirmation fired up for Jesus and open to an invitation to take a more grown up
role in the congregation. How can we keep the momentum going? Let’s engage our youth, building on the gifts
we’ve seen them demonstrate during the time they were preparing to be confirmed.
“So in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. 6 We have different
gifts, according to the grace given to each of us.” Romans 12:5-6

Outdoor Worship
On June 15, both church services are going to be held outside
and in between the services a Pancake Breakfast will be held.
In the gym. So mark your calendars to try and make one of
the services and have breakfast with us.
Remember VBS

for the children. Call the office to register at 636-947-8010. The time is 9

Our next blood drive will be on July 27, 2014 in our gym. Time is from 8:00 a.m.

in need for the gift of life.
Wanted Projection Technicians
We are still in need of screen operators on Sundays for both services. Our volunteers are so important to help with
this important part of the service. If you are interested please call the office. (636-947-8010) If you are wondering
what the job involves, you can observe one of the operators on a Sunday during worship
Sunday, June 22, 2014
A very important Congregational meeting June 22, at 6:00 p.m. in the
Sanctuary. Watch bulletin for more details.
Church Tornado Response Plan

An Emergency Planning Team was formed to establish procedures for the safe, systematic and orderly
evacuation to the shelter-in-place location during a tornado warning at Our Savior.

Elders and ushers will escort everyone in the building through the walkway and downstairs to the Preschool
hallway. The Preschool hallway is our severe weather shelter. Members with mobility needs will be
assisted to the elevator to move downstairs.

If children are in the nursery or in Children’s Church, they will be escorted immediately to the shelter
downstairs. Therefore parents should go directly downstairs to unite with their children. If you have any
questions or concerns about the process, please contact an Elder or a member of the Emergency Planning
Team. The Emergency Team members are David Kuppler, Ardith Ellis, Ann Broeker, Marsha Corley, and
Chuck Leaf.
Summer
Time is Fun
Time!
We were blessed with a wonderful school year at Our Savior Lutheran Preschool! Friday May
30th ended our school year and Monday June 2nd started our summer session. We stay busy year
round in preschool because the community and children need us. During the summer months
we have 2 preschool classrooms in session and we have a 10 week summer camp for children
ages 6 – 12 years old.
What do our preschool children do in the summer? We continue to learn year round. We are
learning how to be a kind and helpful friend, still learn about our ABC’s and 123’s, how to help
take care of our classroom and how to listen to our teachers and friends.
What do our summer camp children do in the summer? They are on an adventure called
Passport to Fun. It is a child directed camp where during the first few days of class the children
decide on destinations, anywhere in the world, they would like to learn more about. They have
summer time fun also such as water plays days, time at the JC Park and we give them time to
read a good book. We want to provide a safe and fun place for them during their summer break
from school.
What do both programs do together? They continue to hear the good news of Jesus love and
learn more about being children of God. We will have the “Ice Cream Man” come visit us
again. This event is for everyone! Moms, dads, brothers, sisters and members of the
congregation are all invited. We want to all celebrate summer together and create some fun
family memories. Also new this summer, we are going to take our kids to the moon and back!
The St. Louis Challenger Center is going to bring out their mobile planetarium for us all to
explore. We will learn about the solar system and take time to appreciate all the wonders of the
stars God has provided for us.
Summer time is fun time as we continue to learn and grow every day in every way!
