“My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me; and I give them eternal life.”
John 10:27
“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in Him, so that you may overflow with hope by
the power of the Holy Spirit.” Romans 15:13
Hello Our Savior Family;
What a joy it is for me to write this summer newsletter article. I love summer; I have never really been a winter
person. Although, I grew up in Wisconsin and spent over a decade in Minnesota, I would take mosquitoes, heat
and humidity, over hats, mittens, and layers upon layers of insulated clothes.
What a joy it is that even though people go on vacation more in the summer, we have a lot of projects underway
from grass cutting to beautifying the prayer garden. The past few months have brought us to the completion of
our new 4th classroom in our Pre-School – that room just keeps transforming into a wonderful addition that will
allow us to share the love of Jesus with more children than ever before. We will be having a dedication and
open house for all congregational members to see the finished product on Sunday, August 16 th- keep watching
the bulletin for more information. Small Group ministry has continued to flourish over the summer as well as
our young adult group, “Quarterlife” as most of you know they have been busy flocking anyone and everyone
to raise funds for a mission trip they are planning next year. We really have been growing a lot this summer!
What a joy it is to know that our LWML ladies have been active as well. Just as a reminder the Lutheran
Women Missionary League (LWML) is open to all women and we at Our Savior have an added privilege of
hosting the Circuit Fall Rally in October. It is truly amazing how the Lord has blessed this group with all the
ladies having hearts that love to serve. Please keep your eyes on these ladies as they are truly a blessing to Our
Savior.
What a joy it is to know that even as our youth were busy on a mission trip in St. Paul, MN. a few weeks ago.
As I write this they are preparing to lead our worship service on Youth Sunday. Between our Sunday School,
VBS, and our Teenage Ministry, we are planning on great things in the months and years to come.
What a joy it is to know that as our Pre-School continues to minister to families and their children and that the
Lord continues to bless us with more enrollments. Normally, attendance drops in the early childhood industry
during the summer months mainly because older children are off of school and they are able to watch their
younger siblings. Not so for Our Savior! We haven’t declined in numbers, but have taken on more children
this year.
What a joy it is to know that no matter what we do or fail to do – God forgives us for Christ’s sake. What a joy
it is to know that at life’s end we have the promise of eternal salvation. What a joy it is to know that neither
death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor
depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus
our Lord.
With that being said – Have a great and blessed remainder of your summer because I know I will!!!!!
Pastor Mike
What did He Say? – Author Unknown
A young preacher heard an older preacher say in a sermon, “The happiest days of my life
were spent in the arms of another man’s wife – my mother.” Thinking it was cute; he
decided to include it in his next sermon. He said, “The happiest days of my life were spent
in the arms of another’s man’s wife.” Then his memory went blank, he coughed, swallowed
and started over: “The happiest days of my life were spent in the arms of another man’s
wife.” Still not able to remember, he blushed and said, “To save my life, I can’t remember
who she was.”
At a revival the preacher stated, “All who want to go to heaven stand up.” All stood up
except a drunk. Seeing him, the preacher then said, “all who want to go to hell stand up.” The drunk wobbled to
his feet. The preacher said, “You mean you want to go to hell?” The poor man said, “N-no, I-I really don’t, but
I thought you looked so lonesome standing there by yourself.”
A man who was mighty ill asked his wife to send for the minister of a certain denomination. She asked, “Henry,
why don’t you send for your own preacher?” He replied, “Oh, no, no, I wouldn’t dare expose my pastor to this
disease I have.”
Laughing with Lutherans
Gary was having a yard sale. A pastor
bought a lawn mower but returned it a
few days later, complaining that it
wouldn’t run. “It’ll run,” said Gary. “But
you have to curse at it to get I started.”
The pastor was shocked. “I have not
uttered a curse word in 30 years.” Gary
said; “Just keep pulling on the starter
rope-the words will come back to you.”

What’s in your Backpack?
Although this is being written in the dog days of summer- by the time you read this article -the “Back to
School” season will be in full swing. WOW! Where does the summer go each year?
A staple item for each back to school students is the trusty and often decorative backpack. The backpack, on
the outside, is often a reflection of the individual carrying it. They come in all different sizes, shapes, colors
and designs and often represents the individual’s personality and style. Of course, all backpacks serve the same
basic function: to carry your “stuff” on the inside and to make the trip easier and manageable.
Like the backpack- we Christians come in all different sizes, shapes, colors and are blessed with a God given
uniqueness on the outside. But even more important than our Christian exterior is what we are on the inside.
Fortunately, God supplies each of us with the right “stuff” to take on life’s journey. Let’s look at the back to
school basics that each of us should have in their own unique Christian backpack:




The Bible is paramount in your backpack, as it is your textbook to His Word. The Bible instructs us
how we should live our lives and have complete trust in his Word. It also provides answers to questions
that life hands us and encourages us to have faith in him during our travels. A must read for the
Christian traveler!
Daily devotions such as Portals of Prayers will fill your backpacks with “goodies” and helps you as
you face new challenges each day. These devotions provide each of us with that little extra boost we
need to energize our lives and focus on God’s will and direction. I found the book, Jesus is Calling, and
it’s been a real blessing in my every day reading and would encourage you to read it also!
Bible Studies, if regularly attended, is a great way to continue your education. These classes can
provide stimulating conversations and insight into the way fellow Christians interpret what the Bible
says. Plus- it creates a great fellowship time for you to enjoy and share with others.
Time in prayer with God – ok- so you can’t pack a prayer in your backpack but, it’s something that
can be with you throughout the day. A regular, daily conversation with God allows us to lighten the
load of our everyday lives by giving your troubles to our Heavenly Father or even better-by thanking
him for your many blessings.
Despite all these good things God provides us with for our special, Christian backpack- do you find your getting
filled with worldly possessions and activities? Does your Bible end up on the bottom or your devotions
destined to that hidden pocket? Jesus says in Mathew 11:28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and
burdened, and I will give you rest”. Jesus invites all of us who need rest from carrying too much baggage by
focusing on him and allow His strength to lift your heavy burden. We are thankful that Jesus’s invitation is to
be next to Him as we walk in our lifetime of learning. So whether you’re heading back to school or a graduate
of the school of hard knocks- make sure your backpack is carrying the right stuff. May this season be one of
living and learning in what’s God’s will for each of us-in faith and trust in Him during this journey!

the table favors for the LWML Zone Rally in August and Christmas stockings in September.
Oasis Food Pantry, Thrift Store, and Jobs for Life
Our God has called us to offer our lives in service to each other. One example of loving
service to each other is the care and feeding of the poor and hungry.
Last year Oasis Food Pantry served 7,163 families. So far this year 3,616 families have
come to Oasis for help. This summer a drive for school supplies went out to area churches
because there was a need for 591 school children. 602 backpacks were filled with school
supplies and delivered to the families July 25 and 26.
Loretta MacCallum has managed the Thrift Store since 2008 as a volunteer to help support
the Oasis mission. She is looking for someone to take her place. The Thrift Store is open from
9am – 5pm Wednesday through Saturday. If you have an interest in doing this, please contact
one of us.
In 2013, Oasis expanded its mission by launching a partnership with a training program
called “Jobs for Life.” The training gives the clients tools to seek and maintain employment by
learning skills to get a job - hopefully for life. They have now successfully changed the lives of
50 families.
Jobs for Life is now seeking new volunteers as teachers and mentors. Training will begin in
August. If you are interested, please contact Oasis at 723-0037.
For the next two Sundays, we will be signing people up in the gym to help at Oasis. Our
Savior date is the 1st Tuesday of each month from 6:30pm – 8:30pm. It is a rewarding
experience to help others in need. If you don’t get a chance to sign up, you may call Rick or
Ardith Ellis at 636-724-5540 or Kathy Brasher at 314-853-8903.
We would also like to thank Our Savior congregation for all of your help at Oasis and also
for all of the donations of food, school supplies, and other items given to Oasis. Your support
has kept the mission alive and responsive to the needs of our community. May God continue to
bless each of you as you help others in need.
Kathy Brasher, Ardith and Rick Ellis
God Calls Us to be His Workers
In spite of our foolish and sinful ways, God calls us to be His workers. Scripture tells us
that Jesus did not pick people from society’s elite when He chose his workers. Jesus’ disciples
were peasants, fishermen, and even a tax collector. Paul wrote, “Brothers, think of what you
when you were called. Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were
influential; not many were of noble birth. But God chose the foolish things of the world to
shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong. He chose the
lowly things of this world and the despised things . . .” (1 Corinthians 1:26-28). The majority of
God’s work was done and continues to be done by the lowly and oppressed people.
Certainly, God can use celebrities and very successful people in His work. However, we
need to remember that, even though we may not have accomplished anything of worldly
significance, broken any records, or won any awards, God can use and transform us into
effective workers in His kingdom. “I can do everything through Him Who gives me strength”
(Philippians 4:13). Society gives many accolades to those who succeed, but there is no greater
honor or privilege than to be chosen as God’s vehicle to spread the Gospel. As John states in his
Gospel, it is Jesus Who does the choosing. “You did not choose Me, but I chose you and
appointed you to go and bear fruit” (John 15:16).
So why does God elevate the foolish and the lowly to be His workers? A reason may be
found in 1 Corinthians 1:29: “so that no one may boast before Him.” It is only by God’s grace
that we are saved, called, and equipped to be in His service. If we come into God’s work with
impressive credentials, we risk taking the glory and credit for ourselves. God desires the weak
and the lowly. As Paul said, “Therefore, I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses,
so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses,
in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong”
(2 Corinthians 12:9-10). God uses ordinary people to do extra-ordinary things. Are you ready
for duty?

Stewardship Devotion
Scripture Reading:
“Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom
and healing every disease and sickness. When He saw the crowds, He had compassion on them, because they were
harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then He said to His disciples, ‘The harvest is plentiful but the
workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into His harvest field” (Matthew 9:35-38).
Becoming Workers in the Harvest
Jesus knew that the people needed a shepherd. He was determined to rescue as many as possible. Jesus said to
His disciples, as He speaks to us, “Ask the Lord of harvest . . . to send out workers into His harvest field.” It is God’s will
that all people come to salvation (2 Peter 3:9). The harvest field belongs to the Lord, and God will see that the people
needed for the harvest will be available.
God invites all of us to be His workers in the harvest field. He doesn’t need us, but He gives us the privilege to
be involved in this very important work. In His sovereignty, God has called and chosen to work through us. What we
can offer is our time and our talents. In Christ, we can do work that will be blessed into eternity. We begin this allimportant work by asking or praying for a successful harvest with many workers being sent into the harvest field.
Because of our prayers, He will provide the workers who are needed.
As we pray for God’s work to be accomplished through workers in the field, we are, in essence, allowing Him to
make us the answers to our own prayers. God will find ways to use our gifts in ways that will touch others. We are
encouraged to pray for God’s work to be done, and to be involved in doing this work personally. God will give us the
strength to overcome the excuses that often plague us such as I don’t have the time or I’m not equipped. As Paul wrote,
“I can do everything through Him Who gives me strength” (Philippians 4:13).
Discussion Thoughts:
1. In what ways are we similar to sheep?
2. Is survival possible without a shepherd?
3. God had compassion on the people because they were “harassed and helpless.” What does it mean that “man’s
need is God’s opportunity?”
Prayer:
Lord, we are all in need of You as our Shepherd. Thank You for always being there for us. We thank You for your care
and compassion. We thank You for giving us the privilege of serving You as we tell others of Your wonderful love.
Please forgive us when fail to tell others of the Good News. In Your precious name we pray. Amen.
