Graduate Programmes Overview
Nanyang Technological University (NTU) offers graduate programmes leading to the award of the degrees of
Master and Doctor of Philosophy as well as Graduate diplomas.
There are two types of graduate degree programmes – (i) by research and (ii) by coursework and dissertation.n.
•
Degrees by Research
Candidates reading for a higher degree by research pursue an independent but supervised research on an
approved topic based on which a thesis must be submitted for examination. The award of the research
degree is based solely on the thesis submitted. For enrichment purposes, candidates are also required to
– (i) do 2 to 4 subjects chosen from the coursework programmes. These subjects may be those offered by
the School enrolled in or approved subjects from other Schools. Selection of subjects is made after
consultation with the research supervisor. (ii) Attend at least 6 seminars relevant to the candidates’ research
area.
Research candidates work closely and keep in regular contact with their assigned supervisor on their
research project. Supervisors will submit regular reports on the progress of each candidate under their
supervision.
In addition to being examined on the thesis, a candidate for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy must pass
an oral examination on the subject matter of his thesis and other related subjects. For non-Ph.D. candidates,
the oral examination may be prescribed at the discretion of the Board of Examiners.
•
Degrees by Coursework and Dissertation
Candidates reading for a higher degree by coursework and dissertation follow a prescribed course of study
comprising several subjects and undertake a project on which a dissertation will be written. The course of
study involves formal classes, lectures, tutorials, seminars, laboratory work and written examinations.
Classes are usually held in the evenings from 6.30 pm to 9.30 pm. Depending on whether it is full time or

School Of
Materials Engineering
The advancement of new technologies and engineering applications
often depends heavily on the prior development of suitable advanced
materials. In recognition of the importance of the study and knowledge
of materials to industrial processes and engineering applications, the
Division of Materials Engineering was established in 1991 in the former
School of Applied Science, and subsequently elevated into a full
engineering school of NTU, the School of Materials Engineering, in
July 2000.
The School has two Divisions, Division of Materials Science and
Division of Materials Technology. Over the years, the School has set
up the state-of-the-art research facilities and infrastructure. It now
attracts multi-million dollar research funding from government
agencies and industries and has established research collaboration
with many leading institutions overseas. Our laboratories presently
house many modern sophisticated equipment, such as scanning
electron microscope, transmission electron microscope, X-ray
diffractometer, GPC-HPLC, light scattering system, vibrational
spectrometers, dielectric network analysers, differential scanning
calorimeters and other thermal analysers, vapour deposition
equipment, mechanical testing equipment, heat treatment furnaces,
and a range of other equipment for polymer and ceramic processing
and characterisation.

OF DEFENCE AND STRATEGIC STUDIES
GENERAL
Degrees By Coursework And Dissertation
As we enter the 21st century, the bases of international security are undergoing profound changes. The end of the
Cold War, the emergence of new power centres in East Asia, the outbreak of ethnic and nationalistic conflicts
around the globe, the rise of religiously motivated terrorism, and the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction,
are some of the factors that have transformed the nature of conflict in the international arena. The global security
architecture is in a state of flux, due to the rising power and influence of countries such as China, Japan and
Germany. Security is also no longer a matter of military force alone. Economic and ecological concerns, migration,
drug trafficking and other non-military issues have become more salient in the security agenda.
It is with this in mind that the Master of Science in Strategic Studies and Master of Science in International
Relations programmes were conceived. The M.Sc. (Strategic Studies) aims to develop security analysts conversant
with pressing strategic issues in the Asia-Pacific and beyond, and to introduce graduates to current thinking
across the whole spectrum of strategic and security-related issues. The M.Sc. (International Relations) aims to
equip graduates with a systematic understanding of the theories purporting to explain the nature of interactions
between states as well as non-state actors in an increasingly globalized international system.
Master of Science (International Political Economy Programme)
International Political Economy (IPE) is a field of study that explores the issues and problems raised by the
interaction of an increasingly globalised world economy on the one hand, and the territorially based international
states system on the other. This particular structural feature of the world economy requires a method of analysis
that explicitly integrates economics and politics as well as the international and domestic levels of analysis.
Conventional fields of study, such as International Economics (especially the neoclassical paradigm) and
International Relations, do not emphasise these inter-linkages in their methodology. Consequently, their
understandings of many real world developments that operate at the interface between politics and economics on
the one hand, and between the structures and processes that occur within the state and at the international level
on the other, remain limited.
By emphasising theoretically rigorous, multi-disciplinary analysis that takes these inter-linkages into account, IPE
offers rich understandings of contemporary developments in world economics and politics, such as the uneven
impact of globalisation on states and societies, the growing resistance to global economic integration and neoliberal
economic reforms in many parts of the developed and developing world, and the ongoing contest between different
actors over the norms and rules underpinning global governance.
Structure
The M.Sc. (Strategic Studies), M.Sc. (International Relations) and M.Sc. (International Political Economy)
programmes can be taken either on a full-time or part-time basis, beginning in July each year. Examinations take
place at the end of each trimester. The minimum period of candidature for full-time students is one year and the
maximum period is three years. The minimum period of candidature for part-time students is two years and the
maximum period is four years. Applicants intending to pursue their studies part-time should note that classes are
conducted between 9am – 6pm on weekdays.

Nanyang Technopreneurship Centre
dedicated to technopreneurship development in the region
Mounting global competition and rapid technological changes mark
the dawn of Nanyang Technopreneurship Center (NTC). A multidisciplinary university-level center, NTC was established in January
2001 through the sponsorship of NTU and the Economic Development
Board to be the focal point of technopreneurship development within
the University and the region, where creativity and entrepreneurship
will thrive, leading to the creation of new business ventures that will
provide the new engine of growth for Singapore.
The Center’s mission to foster, promote and nurture a culture of
innovation and technopreneurship through entrepreneurship
education, has a vision to be the leading institution in the Asia-Pacific
for technopreneurship and innovation education. Ultimately, NTC aims
to groom individuals with the gumption and business acumen to turn
their novel ideas into successful high-tech ventures.
Graduate Diploma Technopreneurship & Innovation Program (TIP)
The Technopreneurship & Innovation Program (TIP) is a 4-month fulltime graduate diploma program, jointly conducted by NTU and the
University of Washington (UW). A program unlike most others, TIP is
a rigorous fast-paced entrepreneurial program of study and real life
experiences covering the entire venture creation process.
TIP picks out individuals with the passion and innate drive for entrepreneurship and provides them with the
knowledge and experience they need to launch new products or businesses in today’s competitive marketplace.
It prepares the participants for entrepreneurship by developing their managerial and technical business skills,
their base of corporate contacts, and the experience and confidence that will help them to succeed in their
endeavors.
Besides classes at NTU, the TIP Program includes 1 week of seminar sessions at Stanford University as well as
corporate and start-up visits at the Silicon Valley, and a 5-week immersion program at the University of Washington
(UW).
The TIP curriculum has been objectively designed to ensure that learning experiences are directly tied to ‘real-life’
conditions, goals and projects, allowing its students to implement the learning during the intensive program,
reinforcing their educational experiences. Participants in the Technopreneurship & Innovation Program are not
placed into a curriculum of classes. They embarked upon a journey supported by experiential learning and the
vital components of an entrepreneurship ecosystem, which involved interaction with entrepreneurs, mentors,
innovators, intellectual-property attorneys, venture capitalists, private investors, business leaders and relevant
government agencies that led them through an entire process of discovery and learning.
Generous zero-bond scholarships, each worth up to S$20,000 is available. Graduates are conferred a joint NTUUW graduate diploma.
