Native American Heritage Month
The Lumbee are the present-day descendants of the Cheraw Tribe and have continuously existed in and around
Robeson County since the early part of the eighteenth century. In 1885, the tribe was recognized as Indian by
the State of North Carolina. The tribe has sought full federal recognition from the United States Government
since 1888. In 1956, Congress passed the Lumbee Act, which recognized the tribe as Indian. However, the Act
withheld the full benefits of federal recognition from the tribe. Efforts are currently underway to pass federal
legislation that grants full recognition to the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina. The SGA will have a table set
up in Dempsey Student Center with information regarding Native American Heritage Month during the month
of November. If you would like more information regarding the Lumbee tribe check out:

Jurassic Fest Recap !
The Sandhills Community College
basketball team heads into a new season
with a sparkling new gymnasium it can
finally call its own and a squad that has
undergone an extreme makeover.
Ranked No. 4 in the NJCAA Division III
preseason poll, the Flyers make their
annual trek to Louisburg College for the
Coca-Cola Classic this weekend. They
meet Howard CC (MD) at 7 p.m. on Friday
and then Southside CC (VA) at 4 p.m. on
Saturday. The Methodist junior varsity
provides the opposition for next Tuesday’s
7 p.m. home opener at Heins Gymnasium
located in the Dempsey Student Center.
Coach Mike Apple begins his fifth season
as coach of the Flyers (101-31) with only
three holdovers from last year’s 27-8 squad
that finished sixth at the NJCAA Division
III National Championship tournament in
New York. Before
practice on Monday
he talked about some
of the things he has
learned about his
guard-oriented squad
from preseason
scrimmages.

So do your part and let it grow.
On November 23th, bring your Student ID and best bowling
