My name in Ottawa is O-gen-ebug "Rose" it was given to me by my Uncle, the great Chief Charles Dawes. I have been a member of the Ottawa Tribe of Oklahoma for 40 years. I am Otter Clan. The granddaughter of Ramona "Pat" Scott, the daughter of Sherrie Scott-Turner and the late Clifford "C.R." Scott. I have been an active member of the tribe for many years, serving on the election committee for almost 10 of those years. I am a Registered Nurse with 11years’ experience currently working as Team Manager at Integris Baptist Regional Health Center where I have been employed 24 years, serving the needs of the members in the community I live in. I have been married 12 years to Robert Werner we have 2 beautiful children Scott and Annabel. I was very blessed to be born into the Ottawa tribe, and feel it's my duty to serve the members. I want to do what is best for the tribe and my community. Being part of this tribe is so very, very important to me. Some of my goals are to preserve the values and traditions of the past, and continue to pass them down to future generations. I feel that when a tribe loses its culture and traditions, they become more like a corporation. I believe in preservation, perseverance, honesty, truth, and fairness. I do, and will continue to believe that “United We Stand, Divided We Fall.” I would appreciate your support in the upcoming election. Miigwetch!! Mikal Scott-Werner 2016 ELECTION NEWSLETTER - adawe Melanie Funk I would like to take a moment to introduce myself and tell you what a privilege it was to have been nominated for the position of second councilman. My name is Melanie Funk and I was born and raised here in Ottawa County by Jerry and Sandra Brown and the late Linda Spinks Ritter. I attended Wyandotte Public Schools and NEO A&M College. I have been happily married to my husband Brian for 27 years and we have 5 children and 9 grandchildren. I currently work for Eagle Picher Technologies as a production lead, otherwise known as a supervisor and with this experience I feel I would be a good addition to the business committee. I would like to be a part of the decision making process with hope of ensuring a future for our tribe and all of its members. My promise to you if elected will be to conduct myself as a professional with all honestly and fairness because I have a very strong work ethic and high standards for accountability. My hobbies include fishing, gardening, and spending time with my children and grandchildren. I am also a member and very active in my church, Cutting Edge Ministries. I would very much appreciate your vote at the election. I feel I could be a great asset, and would just love to be more involved with the Ottawa Tribe. 2016 ELECTION NEWSLETTER - adawe Rhonda Dixon Hayworth Please vote me Rhonda Dixon Hayworth for the Grievance Committee, as member of the Ottawa Tribe of Oklahoma, and direct descendent to Chief Pontiac. I have worked for the Tribe as librarian/historian for 18 years, where I have studied the history, and genealogy of the Tribe. I have a BA in Theater from Ottawa University (Class of 1993), and a Masters in Library Science Media Education from Pittsburg State (Class of 2014). Working for the Tribe for so many years I have read and interpreted the tribal Constitution and Election laws I know the “ins and outs” of the tribe and will continue to work for the betterment of the Tribe and Our People. Thank You for your Vote Greetings tribal members. My name is Susan (King) Spurgeon and I want you to know what a pleasure it is to have been nominated for a position on the grievance committee. Until the last few years, I haven't had the opportunity to be involved much with the tribe or any of its functions. I am the daughter of Gary, who was the caretaker of the tribal cemetery and very active in the tribe until his passing in 2007 and Carolyn (Housman) King, grand-daughter of Bert King and the great grand-daughter of Joseph Badger King whom once served as Chief of the Ottawa Tribe of Oklahoma. I also have two cousins whom served as Chief which included Lewis Barlow and Charles Todd. I was born and raised east of Miami where I still reside today. I attended Wyandotte Public Schools and Northeastern A&M College where I studied early childhood development. My studies were interrupted when my youngest son developed a mental disability due to a lack of oxygen caused by a number of things such as whooping cough and severe asthma attacks stemming from a lump in his throat that shut off his breathing. I am a divorced mother of three sons with five grandchildren, one of whom I've since adopted and currently raising like my own after the tragic death of his father, my middle son. I have been an advocate for over 28 years for disabled children just like my son to give them a voice where they had none before. I am proud to say that I was a major part in helping to get the proper special education and transportation for the disabled children in the Wyandotte Public School System which was previously unavailable. Now those students are able to grow and learn just like all of the other students. Since I am disabled myself from a car wreck in 1998, I fully understand the hardships that can occur when everything is not as it should be. I am so thankful that I can still help others, whether young or old, rich or poor, it makes no difference to me because we are all the same. I take great pleasure in helping others in any way that I can. I feel like I have always been on the outside looking in, but since childhood my late brother and I helped my father to care for the cemetery which my Uncle Larry King continues to this day. Our cemetery is full of heritage and my cousin, Gerald Housman, now deceased, has written a book about all the history and it is currently in the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. I have attended all of the annual pow-wows which occur on our grounds and although I am not a dancer, I fully enjoy just being there to relax to the beating of the drum Susan Spurgeon and meeting other tribal members and their families. The election will be held on Saturday, May 7th at the Ottawa Peoria Building, Miami, OK. If unable to attend in person, please request the absentee ballot by mail and cast your vote for two grievance committee members and the second council person. The Second Chief was unopposed and therefore re-elected by acclamation. If elected, my promise to you will be to do everything humanly possible to get to the bottom of whatever problems should arise, big or small. Thank you in advance for your support. Sincerely, Susan (King) Spurgeon 3 4 Cassandra Mundy Hello my name is Cassandra Mundy and it will be my pleasure to continue working for the betterment of the tribe on the grievance committee.
