YAKUB MEMON AWAITS FINAL ORDER
TO HANG OR
NOT TO HANG
Baljeet Parmar
MUMBAI: Luck seems to have run out for Yakub Memon, brother
of Tiger Memon, one of the main accused in the 1993 serial
Mumbai bomb blast. He was found guilty of receiving deadly
RDX which came from Pakistan and distributing the same for
making bombs which rocked the city on March 12, 1993, killing
257 and injuring more than 700 people on that fateful day. The
city lost property worth Rs.26 crore and more than Rs. 22 crores
were distributed as compensation to the victims and their
families.
He was given death sentence along with 12 other accused by
the designated TADA Court. He appealed against the
judgement in the Mumbai High Court which upheld the trial
courts judgement. The accused later approached the Supreme
Court which commuted the death sentence into life
imprisonment for 11 accused and confirmed death penalty for
Yukub Menon. That was a big blow for the final survival of the
only accused awarded capital punishment.
Exploring further legal remedies, Memon filed a mercy
petition with the President of India which to was rejected in due
course of time. Memon then filed a review petition with the Apex
Court which again was rejected by the three-Judge bench and
that seemed to be the end of the road for Memon.
After the Supreme Court judgement, the Government of
Maharashtra initiated the legal procedure to take Memon to the
gallows. The designated TADA Court was moved two months
ago, which finally passed the order saying that 'Menon shall be
hanged till death on July 30, 2015.'
In the meantime, Memon in a last ditch effort, filed a curative
petition with the Supreme Court asking for commuting his death
sentence to life imprisonment, which is slated to be heard on July 22, 2015.
The legal luminaries have raised important questions over this legal tangle
where a date has been fixed to hang a person while on the other hand a plea to
save his life was still pending in the top court.
Noted liar Majeed Memon strongly criticised the state government over the
issue while Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis washed his hands off saying it
was a legal order given by the designated TADA court and the state was just
following the rulebook.
Senior police official connected with the case, however, opined that Yukub
Memon deserved some sort of leniency as he made it possible for the surrender
of his family members and later himself. He fully cooperated with the
prosecution, accepted his guilt and expressed complete faith in the judiciary. It
is also known that before his surrender the investigation agencies concerned
had assured him that if he cooperated with them, he will be spared of the
capital punishment - the promise which the agencies failed to keep in the face
of strict Indian anti-terror laws.

ACCUSATIONS
AGAINST NAIR
In a final attempt to
unearth hidden facts
behind Lokhandwala
Garden No. 2 (Andheri
West), prior to
SNLCCHSA Ltd.
elections slated on July
Hemant Nair
20, Mumbai Messenger
spoke to a few, who have been at the
receiving end of atrocities meted out
by Samarth Nagar Lokhandwala
Complex CHS Association Ltd.
(SNLCCHSA) Secretary Mr Hemant
Nair and his people. Excerpts from
the conversation with Rajpal
Aggarwal (ex-Secretary of Garden
no. 2) and Indrani Ray (member of
Durga Pooja Committee and member
of Garden committee).
Rajpal Aggarwal: Four days after
winning the Garden elections, Mr
Hemant Nair called me and asked me
to hand over the garden to him. I told
him I cannot do so since it’s not my
property. Also, already a case
regarding the garden is pending in
Court. Only after going through it as
Secretary and fighting it fairly with
the help of an advocate, will there be
a solution. I told him if we win, the
garden is our property, if we lose its
yours. Just a few days after this
conversation he started an inquiry
and had me removed from the post
of Secretary.”
Indrani Ray: Recently, during the
Durga pooja ground booking, there
was some issue brought up for the
garden booking rates. We were
trying to work things out but I got a
call from the Secretary of the garden
Sanjay Tahiliani, who is Hemant
Nair’s supporter that the only
solution would be by withdrawing
from the club elections. If that was
done, everything would be sorted,
according to him. Whatever was
being done in the last committee also
for raising the rate, the old members
were ready to change and pass a new
resolution. That was made to look
completely differently! So Tahiliani
has made it very clear asking us to
withdraw from the election to iron
things out.

TO HANG OR NOT TO HANG
However, his detractors welcomed the move to
hang him saying that no one can be spared of legal
process as it was not an ordinary crime but a huge
conspiracy against the Indian nation. “I fully welcome
the State government's move to expedite Memon's
hanging as it will serve a big warning to all those who
act against the interest of the nation. Though it has
come too late, but still it has to be welcomed,” said
Retired Senior Police Official Y.C.Pawar, who was one of
the main investigators in the blast case.
Former IPS officer and leading Advocate Y.P.Singh
Y.C.Pawar
Y.P. Singh
said that in view of Memon's co-operation and
dependence, his case should have been dealt with leniently as was done in the case of 11 others
who were sentenced along with Memon by the trial court.
So while the debate on Yukub Memon will continue on the subject of whether to hang him or not,
we have to wait till July 22, when the Supreme Court will formally put its seal on Memon's fate.
Ramzan Razzmatazz

MUMBAI: If you are a non-vegetarian and a
foodie, Ramzan is the time to be in Mumbai.
According to restaurant/stall owners in the
city, more than 75% of the people coming out
to eat in this holy month are non-Muslims. The
shiny-lit streets, the glittering duppattas and
kurtis and the aroma of kebabs and tandoor
rotis - there is something special about the
festive cheer of Eid. And in case you don't
know, here are some well known Ramzan
hotspots that you can go to imbibe the spirit of
Eid:
Mohd Ali Road: This street in South
Mumbai is best known for its nalli nihari.
Mayank Soni, co-owner of Caribou Drift who
organised a Ramzan food walk last week says,
"The mouth watering and lip smacking food
and drink attract thousands of food lovers to
Mohammed Ali Road every year."
He recommends the street next to Minara
Masjid as a must visit. "One should try nalli
nihari at Chinese and Grill. For people with a
sweet tooth, Suleman Usman Mithaiwala is
highly recommended. One should definitely
try their mouth watering sitaphal halwa,
flavoured phirni," he says. He suggests that
one should also try their mawa jalebi, a
speciality from Madhya Pradesh.
Bhendi Bazar: It is another South Mumbai
hub that boasts of some great food stalls and
must-have delicious cuisine during Ramzan.
Ather Wani, an Andheri resident who makes it
a point to visit the place along with his friends
every year during Ramzan says, "For people
who want to avoid eating at food stalls,
Shalimar restaurant is a great option. One
should try the smoking hot, spicy and
delicious starters like mutton baida roti,
mutton rolls and mutton seekh kebabs,” says
Wani.
Bhendi Bazar's 12 Handi (Barah Handi) is
also a must try. It has some awesome dishes
like Pichotta and Paya Curry.
Nagpada: If you want relief from the
hustle bustle of food lovers in Mohd Ali Rd
and Bhendi Bazar and still want to relish the
delicacies of the Ramzan month, then
Nagpada is the place. Bheja Nalli Nihari and
chicken barra cream is a must have food item
at Delhi-Zaika. Hotel Saarvi, opposite
Nagpada police station, is well-known for its
luscious kebabs.
"Visiting Sarvi restaurant is an annual
event for me and my friends. Its mutton kebab,
kheema and zubaan soup are our favourites,"
said Swarupa Dey, Bandra resident.
Bandra west: For food lovers staying in
the western suburbs, Bandra station is the
place to visit in Ramzan. "Lucky Restaurant
and Jeff Caterers are must visit places in
Ramzan in Bandra. At Lucky Restaurant, one
should try the Baghdadi paratha with kebabs
and tikkas. Jeff Caterers serve one of the best
mansuri kebabs, bheja kebabs and malai
tikkas. Mutton khichada, dabba gosht are
other must haves," says Mani Nair, a Vile Parle
resident. For kebab lovers, Nair recommends
Danish kebab corner opposite Sunni Jama
Masjid. "Right from roasted chicken, mutton
kebabs, kaleji to mutton khichda, you will get
everything at a decent price. There is no
compromise to taste," he says. He also
suggests tasting food items from the stalls near
Bandra Station.
SV Road, Jogeshwari: Ramzan month is
like a mini food fare on SV Road in
Jogeshwari. "While going to Mohd Ali road,
Bhendi Bazar is not possible daily, we friends
hang out at the food joints in SV Road every
weekend as it is convenient travel wise. The
street opposite Boston hotel is the place to try
Chikken tikka, khiri kaleji, egg malpua etc.
Mansoor Malpua Mahimwala, rabdi are the
other sweet items that one should try at Valim
Khan's stall," says Shikhar Patel, a Jogeshwari
resident. Seekh kebab and paratha at Delhi
Darbar Caterer, Oshiwara is another place to
be during Ramzan month, says Patel.
Face to Face with Subachan Ram,
Income Tax Commissioner
A pioneer in delivering speeches, he has delivered more
than 4000 speeches to all kinds of audience
One can rarely find
a personality who
despite high profile
and hectic job finds
time to involve in
social activities. He
i s a D a l i t
Beauraucrat. He
has a record of
delivering more
than 4000 speeches
on various topics. Prominent speech includes
Indian constitution and difficulties faced by
dalits in day-to-day life and the fight to survival.
Other topics which he spoke also include
Jainism, Jain Aagam, impact of colours and
personality, democratic republican system of
governance. He is invited by India's leading
institutions such as Indian Medical Association,
various universities of India, Rotary and Lions
club to deliver speeches. He also presided over
All India Mushaira organized at various places
like Lucknow, Allahabad, Jalgaon, Surat,
Gandhidham, Sagar, Bhopal, and Balia. He also
presided over Urdu literature meet, history and
poetic essence in Delhi. Subachan Ram,
Commissioner of Income Tax Mumbai, an IRS
officer of 1987 batch has a candid talk with
Senior Journalist MEWATI SITARAM. He is
doing pioneering researches on the changes
taking place in the lives of Dalits and spreading
awareness through his speeches.
As of now how many speeches have
you delivered and what was general
topic?
The best speeches are authentic and
transparent and come straight from the heart. A
memorable speaker can and should paint vivid
stories which would definitely inspire the
audience and extensive research on the subject
is the main tool. It may sound unbelievable, but
true, as of now I have given more than 4000
speeches which are on record. The general topic
varies from time to time and mostly about
Indian constitution and difficulties faced by
downtrodden of Indian society. I have covered
almost all the
states of India to deliver
speeches. Sometimes a familiar phrase, image,
song or creative cultural element- something
universal to your audience - can make your point
quickly and convey camaraderie more
effectively than your own words. I am also
practicing the same thing which leaves impact
on the mind of audiences.
What is the general belief of guiding
principle of the Indian constitution?
According to the general belief, the guiding
principle of the constitution for governance is
democracy. But I disagree with this concept. In
reality the Indian constitution had given concept
of “Democratic republican of governance
whereas after implementation of constitution,
we only have the concept of democracy and
thereby murdering or assassinating republic
type of governance. Because of defective
approach of governance, we have developed
political democracy and had made all the
attempts to skip from economic democracy.”
Similarly, in Article 38 of the Indian constitution;
there is a provision that the state should ensure
a social order with the view to increase welfare
and common goodness, nevertheless none of
the government ruled that way. India has ever
thought of creating a new social order
mandated by the constitution. There are so
many important points in the Indian constitution
which have been ignored right from the
beginning.
What is your reaction about the
general governance of the country?
Let me clarify that the country needs
effective and more governance rather than less
governance. The reason is very obvious
because only by effective and rigorous
governance we will be able to eradicate socio
economic evils of this country. The responsibility
of the government is to direct the change and
not to watch the change. If we want to change
our society, we have to change it in a directed
way which will demand effective governance. In
our country governance has lost control over
economic and commerce and that is why, we are
unable to develop state capitalism and in
consequence. The spurt of the Indian
constitution and private capitalization has
emerged. The government depended on taxes
to run the country otherwise on the basis of
earning of profit on accounts of production,
services and utilization of wealth. This country
can run smoothly and social welfare can be
enhanced to the fullest satisfaction of the
people.
How do you feel when you see large
gatherings of crowds who eagerly wait to
hear your speeches?
I am not a politician, despite that people
eagerly await to hear my speeches. I consider
myself to be fortunate that people gather in
large numbers.
What kind of feelings do you have while
delivering speeches?
Firstly, I feel that it is my social responsibility
and secondly being a representative of
downtrodden population, it is ethical as well as
service based responsibility to awaken the
downtrodden of the country. This drive of
awakening includes clarity of some hidden
history, stigma, understanding of poverty and
importance of education. So I do all this work as
a part and parcel of my social duty. When I
deliver speeches in prominent platforms I feel
out of the world because you are facing
intellectuals who are keen to know more and
more. Besides, there is a heavy debate between
me and the audience if they want more clarity on
subject. This is a very healthy sign for both, the
speaker and the audience.
Which dignitaries have you shared the
stage with?
Whenever I am invited for delivering any
speech, I make sure to do heavy research on the
subject so that I can share with elite audiences.
There are numerous dignitaries from different
walks of life with whom I have shared stages
across India. Some prominent personalities
include K G Balakrishnan Ex Honourable Chief
Justice of India, H E Governors and Chief
Ministers of various states, Balram Jakhar Ex
speaker Loksabha, Narendra Jadhav former
member of planning commission of India,
Salman Khurshid and Vitthal Bhai Patel former
ministers, many members of parliaments and
legislative assemblies of different states. Last
but not the least, I have shared the stage with
senior bureaucrats of different state cadres.
Is there any hindrance from your
bosses as you travel extensively? Does it
hamper or delay your professional
responsibility?
As of now, I am fortunate that in my entire
career there were no hindrances from superiors.
They never influence or create hurdles because
of clarity of thoughts on various issues and
serenity of social services. Furthermore, if I
complete my designated job sincerely and
timely, there is no occasion for any of the bosses
to create any hindrance or restrain from doing
social service. I am paid to do my job and it is my
prime responsibility that whatever the
circumstance, my work should not suffer. My job
is also of paramount importance for me and I
leave no stone unturned to complete it timely
and errorless.
Does too much of travel and a hectic
job schedule strain you? Does your family
complain?
Indeed, I travel a lot but there is no strain
rather it gives psychological incentives. So far
as physical stress is concerned it is bound to be
there. Sometime my wife and children feel
neglected due to my hectic schedule. And I do
all social work as a mission and they admire it.
You have shared vast knowledge, are
you planning to write any books?
Every single day is an experience in my life
which I really enjoy and I make sure to pen
down experiences and thoughts on a daily basis.
I have written three books which are yet to be
launched. My first book (National Integration)
contains 700 pages, the second one is Impact of
Colours and personality and thirdly Purification
of Instinct. Due to a hectic work schedule, I
could not launch my first book but will do so
soon.

SNLCCHSA VOTERS
GEAR UP FOR D DAY

LOKHANDWALA: Elections of the SNLCCHSA Ltd,
slated for July 20, has brought to the fore many serious
issues wherein the entire Lokhandwala area is buzzing
zestfully with opinions. It is a shift for discussions from
National Politics to Celebration Club Politics. Morning
walk, meetings over poolside in Clubs, Garden goers,
joggers, surprisingly even the watchmen of Societies
are basking in the glory of discussions. Number of
Voters is only 107 and battle lines are drawn.
There are two panels respectively: Lokhandwala
Citizen's Panel led by Master Mariner, Capt Sanjay
Prashar from Cosmos Society and the 2nd Panel led by
present Secretary of Federation Mr Hemant Nair from
Guru Prasad Society.
The buzz about which candidate to choose is so
much in the air that recently, while eating at 2nd cross
lane, this correspondent witnessed a passionate
discussion among the foodies about the credibility of
both candidates. That was interesting food for thought
and the power of the common man. So aware and so
much wanting to know who shall take care of Open
Spaces and the Sports Club. Here is what is at stake for
next five years vide these Election results:
Management of all open spaces of Lokhandwala.
Presently 113 Societies are legitimate Owners of these
places.
Property worth Rs.1000 Crores with annual
handling of money worth INR 5 Crores.
Who will manage Garden No 2 and takeover Open
Ground where a lot of Social functions are held. Well, G
2 has Funds more than INR 2 Crores and open space
worth hundred of Crores. Already the matter is in
Court. Will it be SNLCCHSA or Resident's Association?
Administration of Celebration Club having 4500
members and top class sports, recreational facilities.
Will the present status go on or will there be
revolutionary changes through E- Governance.
Will 9500 Sq Mtrs of Land be registered by new MC
or is it that suspicious compromises shall continue to
rue the Federation.
2011 Elections were fought by Mr Hemant Nair and
Panel to bring back 5500 Sq Mtrs of Land. Can the new
MC show guts to stand up and bring this Land which
conveniently has been put off Radar by Mr Hemant
Nair. Capt Team of Capt Prashar which has in its panel
Mr M A K Shaikh (Retired Asst Commissioner of Police
Mumbai) dig this and bring truth on the surface for 113
Societies to decide criminal proceedings against wrong
doers.
Celebration Club Members: Will they ever see the
light of the day to Vote and elect Managing Committee
Accounts Enquiry where Mr Hemant Nair has taken
stay at HC, will it be opening a Pandora's Box once stay
is vacated and Dy Registrar investigates the
irregularities. Is there a scam being hidden which is
waiting to explode
Will the MC ever get out of comfort zone and work
for betterment of Lokhandwala or will there be musical
chair session of power sharing and infighting?
Will Lokhandwala residents ever see Equal Streets
and Beautiful Lake (Near Joggers Park)
Garden no 17, will be become a multi sports
platform
Will new MC investigate complaints on real time
basis or will it be once a five year phenomenon to make
presentations and do parties only for Society
Representatives
Debate is raging like wild fire on so many issues and
seems like Voters are trying to catch up meetings,
counter meetings, Phone calls with all smiles. The fact
of the matter is that Celebration Club and all these
open spaces belong to each flat Owner of 113
Societies. Not sure if the Representatives are
discussing seriousness in Managing Committee or with
whole society members for WHOM TO VOTE. Talking
to some of the learned Representatives, there seems
to be interesting viewpoints. Generally the
Representatives come out as a learned lot and have
nearly met both the panels few times.
Mr Hemant Nair and previous MC 2 members have
claimed credit for last 4 years work in Celebration Club
and slammed 5 other Members. Surprisingly Kishanlal
Arora, Umesh Motwani, Vipan Gadhok and Rakesh
Seth have claimed against Hemant Nair
mismanagement of administration although these 8
came to Power in unison after dislodging AJAY
Maheswari Panel in 2011. It is noticeable that Mr Ajay
Maheswari did win solo seat in previous elections.
Mr Kishanlal Arora, presently the Chairman of
SNLCCHSA Ltd has always commanded respect basis
his past record of accomplishment in MC of SNLCCHSA
Ltd as well as Lokhandwala Resident's Association. He
has categorically stated that Mr Hemant Nair needs
Rubber Stamp to pass the invoices, Tenders and
Cheques. Only when Mr Hemant Nair is questioned, he
disowns you. Same sentiments are shared by Umesh
Motwani, Vipan Gadhok and Mr Rakesh Seth.
Capt Sanjay Prashar who has prolific track record in
Social services as well as one of the leading lights in
the Shipping Industry is also Research Scholar with
Thinktank FINS (Forum for Integrated National
Security). He has been on the forefront since the last 4
years demanding transparency in the business
conduct of Celebration Club. To support his fight MAK
Shaikh (Ret'd ACP Mumbai Police), Mr Satish Shetty
joined hands. Recently Mr Shaikh was shown volumes
of files by Mr Hemant Nair seeking his police expertise
and wanting to know if he ever made blunder. Mr
Shaikh is now more than convinced to fight against the
deeds executed by Hemant Nair. There's explosive
information allegedly lying in the files of the Club
which are presently under control of Hemant Nair and
his tainted advisor PK Kumar (Brighton Tower
Disgraced Secretary caught on fraud charges of INR
55 Lakhs). As per Mr Shaikh, Mr Hemant Nair is only
showing compromised truth which is half baked lie.
Imagine if this Retired Policeman gets access to all
these files as one of the MC members, the cascade
effect may even see wrong doers in Jail. Self
proclaimed honest tagline MC members who served in
past are in for trouble.

RTO’s dark alley
Poorly lit streets near Andheri RTO are giving sleepless nights
to residents in the locality
Janhavi Samant
FOUR BUNGALOWS: One of the things Mumbai city
takes pride in is how safe its streets are for all citizens.
However, the residents near Andheri RTO beg to differ.
The poorly lit streets near Andheri RTO are giving
sleepless nights to residents in the locality. The fact
that there no adequate street lighting has encouraged
nefarious elements to take over this stretch of the
locality.
According to residents, almost one kilometer
stretch of street is not lit which has led to miscreants
and criminal activities. Also, the residents find that the
poorly lit street has led to prostitution in the area.
“Taking advantage of the poorly lit streets, prostitution
is on in full swing. It is going unchecked as there is no
authority to check on the same,” said a resident who
didn't wish to be named.
It is not that the authorities have not been apprised
of the situation. Prachi Andhale, one of the residents
living in the area stresses, “Street light issue has been a
longstanding grouse. We had written letters to the
BMC but nothing has happened so far.” Law abiding
citizens have to deal with the menacing prospect of
robbery and mugging along the street on a daily basis.
The fear levels have gone up to such an extent that
residents do not travel on the street after dark. After
8pm you will rarely find any respectable person on that
street. “We don't step out for night walks now. Also if
any one of our family members, especially girls, are
returning home late, we ensure someone goes down
to escort them home,” said the resident.
Women especially find themselves at risk. As it is
newspapers are regularly reporting on increasing
incidents of rapes in the city. Mustafa P, who has
recently moved into the locality said that the decision
of shifting to the area hasn't been wise. “Both me and
my wife have odd working hours. With street lights not
functioning, we feel unsafe. I have instructed my wife
to speak to me on the phone when she is returning late
night. If I am home, I personally go to pick her up from
the building gate. It's not convenient at all,” said
Mustafa.
There are numerous such instances of families
being needlessly inconvenienced all because the BMC
is not getting the light situation resolved on this street.
The authorities however claim that they are not aware
of the issue yet. When asked for a comment, Parag
Masurkar, the assistant commissioner, K-west ward
said, “I am not aware of the street light issue in that
area. We will look into the matter.”
The government body should certainly not show
apathy in this matter. It is a known fact that criminal
elements thrive in dark, poorly lit areas. Most cities
around the world have reached a consensus that one
of the main impediments to crime is to improve street
lighting, other than increasing the police force which is
rather unfeasible in our city. Street lighting is also
required to minimize road accidents and ensure safety
of citizens, especially women and children who are
more vulnerable. Rather than wait for the problem to
escalate beyond control and have an underworld den
operating in the area, there should be immediate
redressal of the issue by the BMC. Let there be light!

ANDHERI: Residents seem to be giving paperless
ticketing a huge thumbs up. Within few hours of the
launch of the facility, more than 17,000 people had
reportedly downloaded the app and 700 tickets were
booked. Sharat Chandrayan, chief public relations
officer of Western Railway (WR), said the highest
number of paperless mobile tickets were booked from
Andheri station followed by Borivli, Goregaon,
Churchgate and Bandra.
Railway minister Suresh Prabhu launched the
paperless mobile ticketing system at 35 suburban
stations between Churchgate and Dahanu last week.
Chandrayan said they had received several queries
about the new app and how to book tickets on it and
they had been replying to those. “Several people have
even asked about extending the facility to CR,” he said.
Last December, the railways had launched mobile
ticketing in Mumbai. It, however, failed to get the
expected response from passengers, as they had to
print their tickets via the Automatic Ticket Vending
Machine (ATVM) at stations, after booking it on their
mobile phones.
Now, in the upgraded mobile ticketing app, the
railways have done away with ticket printing. After
booking a ticket through the app, the commuter
directly gets a PDF of the ticket on their phone. WR
officials said after the new mobile ticketing app, barely
500 suburban railway tickets were booked. Railway
officials are hopeful about the success of this system.
Meghna Talreja, a resident of Andheri says, “I
usually travel by train to work. This app has been a
lifesaver. It saves the trouble of standing in long
queues for hours at a stretch. This app also helps me
ensure that I reach my work on time in case I get stuck
in traffic.”
To ensure that no passengers can book tickets after
seeing a ticket checker, on railway premises or inside
trains, the railways have set up geo-tagging of the
station area including the tracks, with the help of the
Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO). As a
result, mobile tickets can be booked only 30 metres
away from and within a 2-km radius of the railway
station.
The facility will be extended to the CR and the
harbour line within a couple of months. Meanwhile,
CRIS is also working on adding the option of booking a
railway pass through the mobile app.

to sell the swanky 2BHK flat that he
purchased six months ago. Soni says
his decision to move to VP Road was a
mistake. “Illegal parking,
encroachment, garbage around has
made life miserable in this area. I am
not alone but many in this residential
society are frustrated with this and
want to move out at the earliest,” says
Soni.
The complex has around 650 flats
and is part of the VP Road where
more than 2,000 people live.
According to his neighbour and
building secretary, they have
repeatedly registered complaints with
local representatives and authorities
for a long time. “It has so far fallen on
deaf ears. Some months back, we
also held demonstrations,” says
Kumar Sanjeev, a marketing
executive who lives in one of the
housing societies at VP Road.
Residents said illegal parking is the
biggest menace. “More than 210 auto
rickshaws are parked on the road.
Commuting becomes a huge
problem. Also in the night, it is unsafe
as miscreants take advantage of the
darkness and loneliness,” says Vishal
Pillai, another resident. He says that
these three-wheelers are parked on
both the sides of the lane.
“Sometimes, there is double
parking, making it extremely difficult
for residents to get their vehicle inside
the complex or take it out in the
night,” adds Pillai. The residents have
written letters to the local traffic police
several times. “Whenever we
approach the local traffic police, only
temporary respite is provided. Things
are back to square one within days.
We have been living here for last 2
years and nothing has changed in all
these years,” says Sanjeev.
In May this year, the residents had
carried out an anti-encroachment
drive too. Residents say that the autorickshaw guys threaten them with dire
consequences too. “Our complaints to
the local authorities have not gone
well with the auto drivers. They have
many a times threatened us with dire
consequences. Most of us hail from
the working class and reach home
late. No one wants to take that risk.
Therefore, many are looking out and
selling off their flats,” concludes Dr
Soni.
When asked, Andheri's traffic
police officials said they are aware of
the issue and are looking into it.
According to transport experts, Metro rail's Versova-AndheriGhatkopar is the world's eighth most dense corridor
Janhavi Samant
ANDHERI: Residents using Metro
railway now have a reason to cheer.
Seeing the popularity of the Metro rail,
the Mumbai Metropolitan Region
Development Authority (MMRDA) has
decided to improve the connectivity to
the Metro stations of Andheri,
Ghatkopar and Jagruti Nagar.
"In a survey, we found that Metro
rail commuters frequently cross the
railway tracks using the public bridge
and then climb down only to climb
again on the station. We have
therefore decided to connect the
public bridge to the Metro rail station
for better access," said an MMRDA
official.
Presently, the Metro station

connectivity with the Andheri Railway
Station and GK Gokhale Bridge by way
of skywalk. This would be the third
connectivity option, said the official.
Puja Acharya, resident of DN
Nagar and a regular Metro rail
Jagruti Nagar Metro station is
complete. "Dispersal of Metro station
will be made here by way of stairs,"
said MMRDA official.
Between January and May this
commuter said, “This is
good news. The thought
of climbing the bridge,
getting off only to climb
another bridge made me
avoid taking the Metro
many times, especially at
night.”
The MMRDA also
plans to connect
Ghatkopar West with the
Ghatkopar Metro station.
“There's a gap of a
couple of feet that needs
to be bridged and a few
steps will have to be
constructed. Those not
possessing a train ticket
or a platform ticket are
not supposed to use the
railway foot overbridge
to go to Ghatkopar East
via the bridge connected
with the metro station,”
said the MMRDA official.
The authority is now
inviting bids for the same
and will start work within
a few months. This will
also include upgrading
connectivity at Jagruti
Nagar metro station.
“For the last few years
road construction work
was underway for the
Andheri-Ghatkopar Link
Road. Now the road
construction below
year, the Mumbai Metro collected Rs
51.89 crore from sale of tickets along
the 11.4-km route connecting Versova
with Ghatkopar via Andheri. The
Metro rail's Versova-AndheriGhatkopar corridor sees a daily
ridership of 26,000 per kilometre
every day. According to transport
experts, it is the world's eighth most
dense corridor.
To help commuters and manage
crowds, the Mumbai Metro One Pvt
Ltd (MMOPL) has employed 900
people. "The metro is constructed in
such a way that it can ferry a
maximum capacity of 11 lakh
commuters a day. In the coming
years, the Metro has the potentiality
to become among the top three
densest metro corridors in the world,"
said Abhay Mishra, chief executive at
MMOPL.

Cultivate reading
culture among kids
How many times have
you encountered
students who “hated” to
read - who apparently
had to be forced to read
by any of various means
of coercion or threat?
Have you ever noticed
instances where one of
Geet A. Rehman Sahib those very children had
once (at an earlier age)
Senior Teacher
Utpal Shanghavi School eagerly engaged reading
material, driven by a
native passion to discover and grow? What are
some of the key factors that promote or inhibit a
love of reading?
Work at each student's ability level and
incrementally build it up from there: For some,
the response to the demand that students know
more is to put increasingly sophisticated material
earlier and earlier into the school curriculum. It
may seem rewarding to say that a young student
read a sophisticated work of literature, but if the
student hated the whole process and didn't
understand any of it (as it was over their head),
then there truly is no victory worth celebrating.
You have to give children books at a level that
they can read with success. This doesn't mean
coddling children into reading only simple books.
The point is certainly to move them up into
higher levels, but to do so by moving them along
at an incremental progression that promotes
genuine progress. By forcing students to read
books above their level, you lock them into a
losing situation and promote distaste for
reading.
Work with a student's natural interests:
Shouldn't the student be reading only the finest
literature? One certainly wants a student to read
fine literature, but let's first put the emphasis on
creating interest and ability in the area of
reading. Then, with an increasing amount of
capital of interest and willingness, it becomes
much easier to progressively stretch the student
into different genres and types of reading
material. Think of these two choices: (1) You do
battle with a student by trying to force them to
read three particular classic books, with heavy
resistance, very slow progress, and a crushed
interest in reading; (2) By aligning with a
student's interests, you ignite an interest in
reading such that they avidly read scores of
books (and some of them are classics).
Start by making a reader rather than
immediately trying to make a literary critic: What
happens if we heavily push students into literary
analysis and critique before they have (a)
mastered reading with high fluency; (b)
mastered reading with high comprehension; (c)
read many works from many different authors in
a variety of different styles; and (d) developed
their natural passion for reading? Before these
points have been achieved, to what degree
should students be made to dissect written
work: protagonist, antagonist, plot, setting,
theme, simile, metaphor, allusion, alliteration,
hyperbole, personification, foreshadowing,
genre…? How much of this will be acquired
naturally by students if they are allowed to
develop into skilled and experienced readers?
Writing is an art form. Reading involves an
experience of this form of art. It involves
communication. When a person attends a
concert, do they typically analyze each bar of
music as it passes along?
A person with a high level of knowledge, skill
and experience in a field will tend to have good
judgment and analytical thinking in that field.
That's desirable. However, these desirable
abilities aren't necessarily nurtured by trying to
make a literary critic before one has made an
excellent reader who enjoys reading. One
doesn't cultivate a love of reading by making
reading into a testing process. On the other
hand, when we focus on the students by using
literature at their level of ability that aligns with
their interests - and when we make skilled
readers who read by choice - such students (as it
turns out) tend to do well on the language arts
portions of standardized tests.
Encourage and cultivate reading for
understanding: Think of a time when you were
completely absorbed by some material that you
were reading. With that material, were you
merely skimming and using rote memorization
without really grasping it - or was genuine
understanding taking place? Undigested
information goes in and is subsequently spit out;
goes in, gets spit out; goes in, gets spit out…the
majority of it ultimately washed away. When
students “read” in this fashion throughout their
many years of schooling, they can be given a
false sense of security. After all, they are passing
the tests. They appear to be winning in the
system. One day, however, they will have to walk
into the “real” world. In the “real” world, genuine
understanding is required in order to be highly
effective. In working with students, promote
reading with understanding. Promote reading
where a real connection and real communication
are taking place. Further, promote taking the
understandings gained from written material
and applying them to produce desired results.
Set an example: Setting an example means
openly enjoying reading yourself. Reading
should not be conveyed to children as a sort of
punishment that one must endure; it should be
naturally conveyed as an enjoyable and desirable
communication medium that opens up a world of
knowledge, imagination, and entertainment.
new toilets have been built. Four fans per room
have been installed. The ground is rented out for
occasions and it earns a fee for the school.
“This will better the conditions of the 1800
children studying in the school. India suffers
from poverty and the poor need to be uplifted.
These children will grow up to make a strong
India," says Manmohan Gupta, Chairman of
Gandhi Vichar Manch.

Women in Fields
Mamta Chitnis Sen from Mumbai is
showcasing her second series of paintings
based on the women of Sawantwadi in the
picturesque and idyllic 11th century castle Chateau de Bressuire, France
MM Correspondent
On special invitation of Mr Jean-Michel Bernier, Mayor of Bressuire, France
and Ms Valerie Won Lee, President and Founder of World Citizen Artists, Paris
- Mamta Chitnis Sen from Mumbai is showcasing her second series of
paintings based on the women of Sawantwadi in the picturesque and idyllic
11th century castle - Chateau de Bressuire, located in the town of Bressuire in
the Deux-Sevres department of France. The exhibition is till August 30.
The exhibition (curated by Ms Naoil Chekraoui) was inaugurated by Mr
Jean-Michel Bernier, Mayor of Bressuire, France, Ms Dominique Lenne,
Chargee de Affaires, Culturelles and Mr Philippe Robin, Vice-President de
L'Agglo2B.
The castle was founded at the turn of 10th and 11th century by the
Beaumont family and played a key role in the battles in Poitou between the
kings of England and France over three centuries.
The venue was the perfect backdrop for the paintings-- Women in
Fields—is second in the series inspired by women farmers from the region of
Sawantwadi—a former princely state in Maharashtra, India. The paintings
depict women farmers (of all ages and stages in life—single, married, ageing)
attending to their daily chores in life in the fields– either alone or with
companions, or in conversations with each other with the lush green fields
forming the backdrop for their activity.
The blank faces of these women in the paintings are a symbol of how
women farmers in India are devoid of their own voice and identity and how
they continue to remain merely a minority, neglected and ignored.
The exhibition was very well received by people of Bressuire and art lovers
from France who identified closely with the subject of women farmers and
their empowerment. Many believed, that the wives and daughters of farmers
not only in India but across the world continue to face the same plight despite
growing urbanization and development in education and other fields.
WHAT THE CARDS FORETELL FOR
Salman Khan
Salman Khan, what do you say about this man that you don’t
know...well ofcourse he is the most bindass person and
obviously his captivating personality has a knack for attracting
crowd that peep from rooftops and mill around his car to get a
glimpse of the star and undoubtedly love him unconditionally.
His invincible and powerful persona makes him a true celeb. The
superstar typically owns the frame, and that’s unlikely to change
this year as Bajrangi Bhaijaan is set to score one of the biggest
openings of all time in India. He doesn’t need to fret ever about
his career. He has flair of making anything possible. Success will
always favour him but there will be slight hindrances in the trail.
Cards suggest he needs to take precautions regarding his health
and any negligence may lead to major problems. Cards show
that he seems to be disheartened about certain things.
Regarding his legal cases, he should face the reality which he
seems to be running from...otherwise it will continue to go on
and not end. Cards show that he is scrutinized and targeted
largely for being a celebrity and also Legal issues will make him
spend money surplusly. Salman’s family and his fans have been
his Rock and Anchor consistently and will continue to do so;
which has and will strengthen him immensely through his life’s
ups and downs. Most of his fans think he can tide over all his
problems. Cards show that if he has any thoughts of family
planning, this time is very favourable. After May,2016 Cards
show that it is a good time to invest or buy property but needs to take necessary precautions regarding paper work as
there are chances of deception. His Being Human brand is doing well but needs to bring more creativity in marketing and
products. All of Salman’s investments will get him profitable results undoubtedly. Career and investments wise Years
2015 and 2016 both would be prosperous. He needs to take special care regarding his health in the months of November
and December of 2015 and concerning his investments in the months of September, October and November of 2016. His
charm will always continue to spellbind his fans for years to come.

Fame, the fickle seductress
Shriraj Bhukhanwala
Amfah Art Studio recently inaugurated the 'In-Transit' art exhibition of
recent works by Dinkar Jadhav, Prakash Sonawane and Somnath Bothe. On
this occasion The Smart Commute Merchandise were also launched. The
inauguration and launch were done by eminent sculptor Arzan Khambatta on

Arzan's sculpture will also be on display to support The Smart Commute
cause and the newly launched Art Studio in Andheri West. 'In-Transit' explores
the disappearing transport systems like the Victorias, Tongas and try to
promote bicycle as an alternative yet smart commute system.
The Smart Commute launched a range of cycle related merchandise and
alternate eco friendly lifestyle products made entirely from the recycled inner
tubes of the bicycle. In Transit will be on view till 16th July, 2015 from 11 am to

Your film is a mega success, you have just become the
youngest CEO in the history of your company, your TV show
is a hit, you are one of the most admired sports
personalities in the world, millions of fans adore you and yet
you are not happy. You can't enjoy the success because you
think its temporary and it will leave you and you will be right
back where you started.
Fame has a bad reputation among thinkers. Poets sing
of its seductiveness and its tendency to breed vanity and
superficiality. People accuse it of clouding your vision, but it
doesn't always have to be that. There are many examples
in our life, prime among them superstars like Sachin
Tendulkar and Amitabh Bachchan. They have been at the
pinnacle of their chosen field for years, and yet they deal
with fame with a very easy head. They don't let it control
their lives. They know they are famous and revel in it,
instead of over burdening their lives in the constant pursuit
of posterity.
We have seen cases of burnout, getting too much
success at a very early age. This leads to a certain amount
of insecurity. There is a constant need for reassurance that
they deserve what they have received. There are instances
of aging superstars or sport stars still living in the past and
grudging their younger contemporaries, not able to deal
with the fact that the adulation and praise reserved for
them has receded.
It's important to have a sense of humor, the ability not
take one's self too seriously. A good example of this is
Shahrukh Khan who woos both the classes and masses
with his self-deprecating wit. Lots of times having friends
outside of your chosen profession helps as they are away
from all the hysteria and are able to give you a better
perspective on things.
All of us should aim at being successful. We should all
aspire to reach the pinnacle of our chosen fields, but being
successful doesn't mean you have to give up being who you
really are.

- Rajniesh
Duggall
After teaming up with Sunny Leone in Ek Paheli Leela, Rajniesh Duggall is now all set with his next movie with her
titled Tera Beimaan Love. Having movies to his credit, Rajniesh believes this is the best time for him as an actor. In this
interview with SHAILI MADAN, Rajniesh speaks about his journey in the modelling world, film industry and life...
Your current projects...
I am shooting back to back for a couple of films right
now. One of the films is titled Udan Choo which is for R
Vision. That is a conman film. I am playing a con. Another
one that I am shooting for is Beimaan Love, which stars
me and Sunny Leone. Rajiv Chaudhary is the Producer
and Director along with Zee. This is a dark romantic
thriller.
Tell us about the movie Beimaan Love...what is it
about?
This is a dark romantic thriller. The character is such
that he is positive, but still has a grey shade in him. It is a
very interesting script on the whole, with a very
interesting mix of people.
Sharman Joshi all set for
Hate Story 3
As he prepares to
play the lead in Hate
Story 3, Sharman
Joshi has decided to
say goodbye to his
'family-boy' image.
The 35-year-old actor
says that he has no
qualms about letting
go of his modesty in
the upcoming sexthriller.
Sharman says, "We
all enjoy erotica
privately so what's
wrong if one is doing
it in a film made for
mass consumption?
We are planning to do
stuff which hasn't
been attempted in this
genre before. If the
script requires me to
go butt naked, I am
willing to drop my
pants. I believe if
erotica is shot
aesthetically, it can be
sexy," he asserted.
This is your second film with Sunny Leone...the
first one being Ek Paheli Leela... How has your
experience been working with her...
Working with Sunny has been nice. In the earlier
movie, I played the hero in the past life. That was very
different village set up. I was the love angle of the film,
with the character Shravan that I played. It was great
working with her the first time and even now. Beimaan
Love is a very modern, today kind of film. Besides, my
experience working with Sunny has been very good
because she is very hard working. She will like to rehearse
before a scene. We also have a lot of fun on the sets.
Your off-screen chemistry with Sunny Leone...
By now, we have a very friendly rapport. Daniel,
Sunny, Pallavi, my wife and me are decent friends. The
only time we are together is when we are on the sets. We
come here, shoot and go back.
On your experience in Bollywood till date...
I have had a good experience with my share of ups and
downs. Right now things are going pretty cool and headed
in the right direction. All is good. Direct Ishq is coming up
- my next release. In this, I have first time played a
Banarasi goon. This is a movie I am really looking
forward to. This is going to be a good landmark film for
me, like Leela. After 1920, I was a little off track, a few
films happened that were not upto the mark as I would
have liked them to be. So of course, once you enter the
industry, you learn a lot – both good and bad things. You
learn what to do and what to avoid. Its all a part of the
learning process. Luckily for me, good things are coming
my way, especially when I have evolved as an actor. Now
is a great time for me as an actor.
You have been a model...do you miss that as a
career?
Not really. On television I have three commercials
going on. I am endorsing three brands. So being on the
ramp is just a phase. There is a certain saturation level
involved. I have done close to 700- 800 shows earlier. I
have walked the ramp for every possible name and brand.
How do you choose your films?
Usually I listen to a script. I like to read it first and if I
like the idea of the film on reading it, after visualising it, I
take a narration. If I see myself watching it, I choose to do
it.
You also won the Khatron Ke Khiladi Season 5.
How did it influence you?
The show was great because it came at a point when I
was about to start a film. Adventure was something I
always wanted to do. This was when I was supposed to
start a film. So I pushed the film and asked them to shoot
post May. In February, I went on to doing Khatron Ke
Khiladi and it was great. I think this was something where
I got to know how much can I stretch from my mind. I
believe that the mind is the strongest muscle for any
human. That's what even Yoga teaches. Your body and
mind is all controlled from here. So the show played a
huge role in pushing me further. Certain things that I was
scared of, I am not anymore. All phobias vanish, the
vision becomes clearer and for me its been great because
earlier I used to over think about things, but now I don't. I
have become more assertive – the hesitation is no more in
me. Also, obviously I have made many good friends
through the show. Gauhar, Salman, Mugdha, we are all
very close now. These are the real memories for life.
How do you define yourself?
I would probably say a dreamer, believer, a connected
soul, very optimistic and also an achiever. Besides this, I
would say I am a very simple person and yes of course I
like it when people are blunt on my face rather than
talking on my back. I hate hypocrites. The best thing is to
be honest and trustworthy, which I am, and expect the
other person to be as well. But the world is not so simple.
You are an animal lover as well...
Yes, I have been part of PETA ever since I moved to
Mumbai. It's been a decade now. We keep doing things for
the welfare of animals. We had also shot a campaign,
wherein I had a ladyfinger tattooed on my back – asking
people to go vegetarian. Now obviously it is a lot about
pets – I think 'don't shop, just adopt,' which is the best
thing to do. Whoever plans to have a pet, should not buy,
but adopt one or may be take it from a family who is not
doing business by selling them. PETA hasn't gotten
involved with the wild animals yet, but I would love to be
part if something comes up.
What are you most passionate about?
Whatever I do, I do with passion. Besides that, I am
very passionate about movies. On a deeper side, serving
people is something that I really enjoy doing. Even doing
a roadside langar gives me immense happiness. Some
derive peace through retail therapy, for me it's by doing a
langar.
Your philosophy in life...
Mind is the strongest muscle – whatever you think,
don't just think for your own self. Think of the bigger
picture. Eventually decide where you will be. Realise that
life is now. Whatever will happen, is bound to take place –
it is also karma. Whatever you are doing now, just enjoy
doing it, be happy with people around and be true to
yourself.

Scarves...timeless fashion
MM Correspondent
When you're just using scarves to complement your outfit,
you truly can't go wrong with beautiful silk scarves. Scarves
made from other material such as angora, cashmere,
velvet, and chenille are also good as fashion accessories.
It's fact that women are very cautious about their looks,
therefore, they always select high quality scarves that
actually enhance their beauty. Embroidered scarves are
mostly used with a sweater, blouse or suit to make your
outfit fabulous and velvet scarf is one of the most popular
clothing items of women.
Ever since the beginning of civilization, human beings
have always been extremely fascinated with accessories. It
has always been around and has come in many different
forms. While gold pendants, medals and fancy robes make
up the hottest accessories centuries ago, today's
accessories come in the form of electronic gadgets, shades
and the like.
And although it has evolved into different things over
the years, accessories will always play a big role in society.
One accessory that has seen consistent popularity over its
lifetime is the scarf. It has been around for quite some time
now and when it was first introduced to the public, it was
done so as a practical way of carrying a handkerchief. Of
course, practicality was very much favoured during that
time so people followed suit and accessorized in this
fashion.
Several centuries later, people found a different way to
use scarf and this boosted its popularity among the people

Ever heard the saying, “The best way
to get over one person is to be with
another?” When your heart is broken
and all you do is think of your ex, this
may seem as a good way to overcome
those jittery thoughts you want to get
over. Welcome to 'rebound'
relationships…often the quickest and
easiest way to get over your ex.
In simple terms, someone who is
'on the rebound' has started a new
relationship before they have
managed to get over an old one.
There is no set time for getting over a
break up and it varies from person to
person.
The way in which the
previous partners split up can also
affect things, especially if someone
was unfaithful or cruel.
Meeting
someone new on the rebound may be
used as a source of comfort, and a
way of temporarily blotting out painful
feelings and memories. Some people
are just really scared of being alone
and rush back into coupledom too
quickly. They don't take the time to
think about what went wrong before
and don't learn from their previous
mistakes.
Psychiatrist Dr. Lata Dhir says, “If
Emotional issues and needs that
were not brought out during the
divorce or split will often rise on the
surface and affect the new rebound
relationship. As one or the other or
both partners in the rebound
relationship work out these issues, a
process of emotional transformation
occurs that frees the grief-stricken
individual from the past. Though often
assumed as not being successful,
rebounds very often turn into
successful relationships.
Often when people rebound, they
are trying to replace the love they lost,
so its easy for them to fall in love
again. If things don't work out, the
fact that you have been hurt again can
be a big hit to your self esteem. Before
jumping into a new relationship, you
might want to ask yourself if you are
emotionally ready to handle the ups
and downs that characterise most
couplings – and he likelihood that this
new relationship will probably end in a
break up at some point down the line.
Being able to rebuild yourself
esteem after a nasty breakup is one
reason that taking time off between
relationships is so important. Another
benefit is if you and your ex do decide
to get back together, things won't be
one of you has rushed into the
relationship before you've come to
terms with a past break up, this will
probably soon start to show up.
Rebounds can often start as whirlwind
type romances, where offers of
moving in together can happen after a
few days, and sometimes marriage
proposals are made within a few short
weeks. Someone who is carrying a lot
of unresolved stuff around with them
often chooses a 'safe person' as their
new lover. They have opted for a man
or woman who will not hurt them like
their lat partner did. For examples, if
they are especially afraid of
unfaithfulness, they'll pick someone
who is strongly monogamous, or may
be unattractive and dowdy. They
might also subconsciously pick a
person who seems 'easy to leave.'
The new partner offers comfort
and an emotional security that makes
it easy to act out anger and other toxic
emotions that could not, for reasons
of emotional inaccessibility, be acted
out on the former partner.”
sticky, because there's no one else in
the picture.
Even if you'll never hook up with
your ex again, a breather can still do
some good. By taking time to get
yourself together mentally and
emotionally, you can start new
relationships on the right foot. And if
you do start on the right foot, the
relationship might end up being a
winner!
Rebounds can prevent one from
initiating a long term pattern of going
from one chaotic emotional situation
to another in the future. Many people
have a series of bad relationships, not
because they are a perpetual victim or
have bad luck, but because they have
not taken the time out that they need
to ground themselves and heal.
In some cases, an individual can
rebound several times on one
relationship simply because they are
looking for a substitute for their
previous partner as opposed to a
relationship that will work.
even further. It was used as a uniform for different groups.
Because it was very cheap, easy to produce and could come
in many different colors, big groups such as armies used
these as identification tags. The different colors
represented the specific rank of a soldier and this was
adopted by several other groups and armies.
Later on, style and elegance became an important factor
in society especially among the rich and famous. As you can
guess, these distinguished people turned to scarves to jazz
up their style and outfits. They had them created using
expensive fabrics and wore them with the utmost
confidence which exuded a very classy look.
Because of this sudden surge in popularity among the
rich, scarves became closely associated with high society
people. Consequently this only further made other people
want to wear this fashion accessory. In effect, its popularity
rose among all social classes and supplanted it as a staple
fashion accessory.
Today, the battle cry among the fashion savvy is
personalization and creativity. People nowadays always
want to make statements and they do so by showing it in
their style. They try very hard to create their own mix of
clothing and scarves greatly help them.
It is a very versatile accessory in that it can pretty much
put on in so many different ways. Around the neck, leg or
waist, hanging out of a pocket or any which way, it provides
fashion conscious people an outlet to unleash their inner
most creativity. Thus, even until now, scarf is still and most
likely will forever be popular.
Attitude of Gratitude
Anjali Nagpal is a life coach and workshop facilitator certified to present Heal Your
Life transformational workshop worldwide approved by Hay House, US. She also
conducts workshops relating to Law of Attraction and self healing. She is also a
therapist for different modules (hypno, metaphor). She is an Angel card reader.
Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
“If the only prayer you say in your life
is 'thank you,' that would suffice” – a
wonderful quote by Meister Eckhart.
Gratitude means thankfulness. It's
very important to aside time for
gratitude. Just look into yourself and
into your life. How much do you
observe the good, how much do you
feel blessed for the things you have or
you just take the good for guaranteed
and ignore it.
It may be easier to see the bad
before the good. But giving more
attention to the bad, just gets to
negative thinking, which brings down
your self-confidence, and will just
make a difficult situation more worse.
Being thankful allows you to see the
good in life. Allows you to notice your
blessing, the simple pleasures and
helps you to acknowledge everything
that you have received.
Gratitude shifts your focus from
what your life lacks to the abundance
that is already present. As even in Law
of Attraction; its explained that
whatever you give your attention too,
multiples. Be thankful for what you
have and you will end up having it
more, if you concentrate on what you
don't have, you will never ever have
enough. Imagine you gifting a friend,
and when the other person is happy
seeing your gift and thankful for the
wonderful gesture, you feel good
about gifting, so does the Universe.
The Universe is a generous,
abundant giver, and it likes to be
appreciated. Spend as many
moments as you can everyday being
grateful for all the good that is in your
lives. If you have little now, it will
increase. If you have abundant life
now, it will increase. This is a win –win
situation. You are happy, and the
Universe is happy. It is not happy
people who are thankful; it is thankful
people who are happy. There's a
gratitude exercise that suggests that
you may imagine losing some of the
things that you take for granted, such
as your home, your ability to see or
hear, your ability to walk, or anything
that currently gives you comfort and
pleasure. Then imagine getting each
of these things back, one by one, and
consider how grateful you would be
for each and every one.
This simple exercise makes you
realize, how much we ignore so much
good in our lives and take it for
granted. In addition, you need to
start finding joy in the small things
instead of holding out for big
achievements. Once you start looking
for the things to be grateful for, might
be in the beginning you will find very
few but once you make this as your
habit you will start getting plenty of
them and it will keep increasing even
more. A very beautiful and powerful
affirmation for gratitude is “I am
thankful for all the good in my life, Life
loves me and I accept with joy and
pleasure and gratitude.
Once you become oriented toward
looking for things to be grateful for,
you will find that you begin to
appreciate simple pleasures and
things that you previously took for
granted. Gratitude should not be just
a reaction to getting what you want,
but an all-the-time gratitude, the kind
where you notice the little things and
where you constantly look for the
good even in unpleasant situation.

and from there on my career graph changed drastically. My first posting as
a Junior Sous Chef was at The Oberoi New Delhi. I was solely handling the
coffee shop and the banquet kitchen which had heavy turnover. People
have high expectations from the Oberoi group and I made sure that it
should remain on top. I was looking to be a part of dream city Mumbai so I
joined JW Marriott hotel, Mumbai as a Sous Chef and rose to become the
chef de cuisine of famous Indian restaurant Saffron. To enhance my
culinary skill, I moved out to join the Mint Leaf group in London as their
Executive Head Chef. After spending close to four years in London I came
back to Goa Marriott as the executive chef, where “Master Chef Show”
happened for me. In 2011, I joined The Westin Mumbai as the executive
chef and finally was out of hotels in October 2014.
Other engagements: I am into many things now. Apart from this
venture I have signed up with Sodexo India onsite services as a consultant.
I would be focusing on their new built and bringing in a fresh approach to
the top corporate eateries. My third project this year is Ziya. The Ziya will
serve modern Indian food. It is very challenging and the menu and
restaurant conceptualizations are done by me by doing extensive research
and development. It will open its gates in October this year. Ziya is in the
heart of Manhattan, in New York City.
On Master Chef India experience: Master Chef is the greatest
platform on Indian television and has a phenomenal reach in the country
and abroad. It has given me a whole new value and perspective. I feel
privileged to be identified and recognised as the flag bearer of Indian
Cuisine.
Regrets: One needs to understand that hotel is not the only options for
chefs but there is lot to do as far creativity is concerned. I have no regrets.
To achieve true success, you need the strength of mind and body to struggle
and work hard to reach your fullest potential. I wanted to see what my full
potential is. I was looking for a larger open sky to fly free. I was unable to
perform in a closed space. I wanted to know what the world has to offer.
You do not come across success just by hoping for it.
Message to aspiring chefs: Being a chef is aspirational. But being a
very good chef is tough. Not to scare anybody but it requires diligence,
hard work, creativity, kilos of passion and lots of perseverance. It may take
time but hard work always pays off and of course sky is not the limit.

Shaili Madan, Resident Editor
Road rage and its issues..! Phew!
The stress while driving through
the streets of Mumbai usually takes
on a whole new meaning. Have you
tried driving from Oberoi's (Nariman
Point) to Juhu at 7pm on a weekday?
To compound the state of roads
(where is our money going: road tax,
vehicle tax, etc). Our roads are left
for nothing else but festivals, film
shootings and processions of all
kinds and manner.
At every honk, every
introspection you have to prove
yourself as a 'road user.' Whichever
sex you belong to, its an intense
lesson in self control, driving around.
Especially if you are a lady driver,
you will find even pedestrians
messing around with you. Then there
are the scooter riders who love
looking into your side view mirror at
the signals or the guy in the car that's
been following the same route as
you...checking you out...
Namrata Gaur, a wannabe
socialite celebrity refuses to sit
behind the wheel even if it means just
dropping the kids to school which is
a mere kilometre away. She tells me
“I would never begin my day on a
stressful note. What with traffic jams
outside most schools and the
incessant honking it would drive me
up the wall watching and waiting
while my car takes a mini step
forward!”
The pre and post office hour rush
ruins even the most relaxing day at
work you could have had. Bad
parking on the kerbs (the boot of the
car jutting out in a one-lane zone),
cars blocking entrances, haath
gaadis, school children fruit and
vegetable carts, bhel waalas...you
name it and you got it all on the
streets of Mumbai. So at the end of
the road you feel drained and
thankful you've reached in one piece
to your destination! And then the
roads are abominable...potholes,
Hail sale deals! Sales set sail!
Hail season of sales, discounts and offers! Blessed are we
mere mortals who can now proudly swipe their plastic
cards and shop till their shopping bags kiss the floor.
The rains may be playing truant in our city but the stores
haven't let their customer's down! They are here, as last
year, with a promise to stay and have a say in our lives,
homes, wardrobes and kitchens: our entire spending this
downpour season. Tempting us like the sinful apple in
paradise these sale schemes offered by stores and wellknown brands in a fierce competition to outdo each other
Bindu Midha
through the irresistible offers made to draw customers.
They have proved to be a boon for the malls, which were seeing a fall in footfalls
on account of the online shopping offers.
It's raining deals. The brands begin to stop gnawing at our pockets, rather
become friendlier! It's a downpour that all shoppers would like to get drenched
in as the TM holders seem to be tripping over each other to tug at eager
customers. 25% OFF Buy now commands one! Flat 50 % OFF declares the
neighbouring store display window, Buy 2 get 1 free or better still buy 3 and get 2
free beckons a third making one stand and stare in disbelief! Can these be the
very outlets that you could do just that from the outside-stand and stare? But no
longer, no more! As the king of the discount session is here! One could take
courage and stalk in pompously and pick items of choice minus a demure
overflowing drains, dug up portions,
damaged speed breakers all call upon
you to be a road driver of alien
capabilities, which obviously none
of us possess. But all these factors are
leading most people who drive to
become aggressive, stressed and
verbal. No one will let another
vehicle overtake their car, bus drivers
will make sure they cut across the
road every time they see a bus stop
instead of sticking to the last lane in
the traffic, everyone would rather
make the signal than miss it so
everyone is driving in the 5th gears
even if the junction is a turn! Its all a
prestige issue on the roads!
I
f
you have started out at say Nariman
Point and somewhere at the
Chowpatty signal you've figured out
a couple of Nissans and Fords as the
ones that had started out with you,
you get mentally geared towards a
'race!'
Moreover, with the number of
cars on the
roads today
there is little or
no place to
really drive
and park the
car. Either it gets towed away or
some accessory is missing from you
car when you get back to it.
Obviously it leads to a very jumpy
sort of a motorist you would
encounter at the junction because of
what must have happened a few
moments ago.
My concern is the effect this new
and serious affliction is doing to our
insides. It will lead to higher blood
pressure, heart and cholesterol
ailments. Just as the brouhaha for
the pollution ratio on the streets
forced us to wake up to the dangers
of taxi-auto and heavy vehicular
pollution, it time we all woke up to
the silent killer on the
streets...Road Rage...
demeanour. In fact, one could actually shop for an entire family making each
member happy! What a magnificent enticement for the entire clan!
Shop till you drop and have your fill of apparels, shoes, handbags, watches,
cosmetics and what not all at reduced rates. Not to be outdone and subsequently
undone restaurants too offer their diverse offerings to their Gods of consumption
at red rates. It's not a rain, not a shower it's a heavy downpour that none can stay
protected from or would like to shelter themselves from. So every buyer-you and
I- enjoy the sunshine while it lasts- buy and buy more, accepting graciously the
great deals, declare openly “I'm loving it!”
However, you do need to be cautious of the kinds who flamboyantly declare up to
70% OFF. You walk in confidently thinking you would buy that dream T-shirt and
a pair of jeans for a steal but discover to your horror that only one a few products
are on an offer of that kind. Slowly, you realise that what you get down to
appreciating has a meek offer of a mere 20 or 30 %.
Nonetheless, the season is a blessing in disguise for many of us who window
shop all year round. We are given this golden opportunity to buy stuff which our
dream brand creates. In other seasons, it would remain just that – a dream.
Interestingly, it may so happen that your choice may not be met by the products
put up for sale and you might just venture to buy something from the fresh stock.
And needless to say you end up paying more. But at the end of the day you do
have it good. You do enjoy yourself and the feel good factor rises high making
you confident about yourself. So why ponder or deter, just go shopping to the
neighbouring mall resplendent with goods eagerly waiting to be picked up
lovingly by you.
Let's go shopping- you and I. Let's allow the brick and mortar to breathe.
Easy ways to Increase Happiness@Work
Imagine you are holding a glass of water. The absolute weight of the glass
doesn't matter. It all depends on how long I hold it. If you hold it for a minute or
two, it's fairly light. If you hold it for an hour straight, its weight might make
your arm ache a little. If you hold it for a day straight, your arm will cramp up
and feel completely numb and paralyzed, forcing you to drop the glass to the
floor.
In each case, the weight of the glass doesn't change, but the longer you hold
it, the heavier it feels to you. Similarly your stresses and worries in life are very
much like this glass of water. Think about them for a while and nothing
happens. Think about them a bit longer and you begin to ache a little. Think
about them all day long, and you will feel completely numb and paralyzed –
incapable of doing anything else until you drop them. In our daily busy lives,
we tend to attract enough negative people, negative events and irritating
moments, which we want to forget, but we don't.
Sometimes, we just push our emotions under the carpet and act as if normal.
We have learnt to bury our emotions within us in
the name of survival. Success and Happiness
begins when you learn how to let go of your
stresses and worries. The number 1 quality for
success in life is "Relaxation." Your intensity of
happiness is directly proportional to your degree
of relaxation. No matter what happens during the
day, you can put all your emotional burdens down
by practicing simple techniques like deep
breathing or psychic sleep. Many participants who
learn & practice daily do not carry the worries and
stresses through the night and into the next day
with them. If you feel the weight of yesterday's
stress, it's a strong sign that it's time to put the glass
down. Allow me to share with you three
techniques (simple, easy and easier) which you
can apply in your work-spot. These techniques
will increase your happiness and thereby your
productivity & relationships with your peers, supervisor & colleagues. You can
even apply the same in your personal life too.
Simple Technique 1:- Before you leave office, take a sheet of paper (or
even on your comp), list down 5-10 good things that
happened on that day. Talking nice to your colleagues,
had a healthy or sumptuous lunch, got a new sale, solved
an issue, meeting a deadline, successful client servicing,
able to inspire one colleague, appreciated somebody &
felt happy etc. You can maintain this as a happiness log
or happyness@work journal also. Since many of us Murali Sundaram
have the tendency to remember the negative experience, it's better to
remember the positive one by writing in this journal. Writing at-least 1 positive
experience per day means, 22 in a month and 250 plus positive experiences in
one full year. This list will pep you up, motivate you and above all help you
during your half-yearly or annual appraisals. Remember, the last 5 minutes of
every single work day will determine your happiness at work. If this exercise
sounds boring, then let me share with you an easy way & an easier way.
Easy Technique 2:- Can you invest just 8 seconds of this easy way. That's
all I am going to ask you now. Bring your
entire attention to the tip of your nose & take
just one full deep breath mindfully. Feel the
chillness of the air as your breathe in for 4
seconds and feel the hot air coming out as you
breathe out for 4 seconds. You can mentally
count 1-4 for inhale and 5- 8 for exhale. Can
you do this without getting distracted? One
mindful breath and you are done with today's
meditation. Nevertheless, One mindful breath
a day, keeps your unhappiness away!
Easier Technique 3: - Everyday, when
you enter your work-spot, at random look at
any two people and mentally tell “I want this
person to be happy”. Start doing this exercise,
you will suddenly find that you are filled with
lots of happiness and good things happen in
your life. If you like any one of the above 3,
then, pick that one & start the practice for the next 21 days till it becomes a
habit for you. Practice promotes habits and habits deliver results.
Happyness@work = Super charged, Exciting, Rewarding, Energizing, Fun.

Dear Editor,
I loved your front page news on
Dawood and Lalit Modi. Hats off to
the Mumbai Messenger team to
print such daring and bold news on
the Underworld. You have been one
of the first few papers to fearlessly
print news with complete
transparency and truth. It requires
extreme dedication and hard work
for a team to keep delivering such
great news week after week. It is
always good to read more on the
underworld, something that we are
usually unaware about. Keep up the
good work and keep the exclusive
news coming in.
An avid reader,
Sharman Ahuja
To the Editor,
I read your story on single women
searching for houses. I am also
single and it was a tedious task for
me to find a suitable home in
Andheri. This is utter nuisance for
the women on an everyday basis
who do not get appropriate housing
just because they are single. People
are ready to exploit them at some
level or the other fearlessly. I just
hope people change their attitude
and mindset towards women in
society. It is high time this happens.
Women have the power to do so
much more than be bullied by
opportunists wanting to make a
quick buck. Thank you for the great
read.
From
Shilpi Ahuja
Dear Editor
You have raised a serious issue of
having a liquor shop close to school
premises. It is a very serious
concern that should be looked into. I
think the parents should take up this
matter on an urgent basis. This has
come as an eye opener to me, and
for most other parents as well, I am
sure. It is not good to have a school
so close to a wine shop. It may not
influence the children rightly. I hope
the authorities take some action
even though the wine shop has
come way before the school. This is
a huge issue that must be dealt with,
as soon as possible.
From
Jayesh Shah
Dear Editor
I loved your story on potholes. It is a
disgrace that our local authorities
are always careless about the
condition of the roads. Potholes
have been a problem in the city,
especially the suburbs since a very
long time. We need to have good
road. This is our right. Having said
this, ironically, we are also the
highest tax-paying city. Then why
do we not even get little of how
much we give? This is an issue that
is an absolute disgrace for the
municipal authorities year after year.
With the orders of the High Court
now, I really hope local authorities
are listening and will do something
to change the bad state of the city.
A hopeful citizen,
Rajiv Mehra

- Vanita Gogawale, 27
Dear Vanita,
This seems to be a malnourishment/
weaking of your hair follicles. It can
sometimes be Female Pattern Hair
Loss condition or nutritional
deficiency also. You need to visit
your doctor for clear diagnosis
before any treatment can be
initiated.
I have a tan coloured complexion
originally. However i work in a firm
for Sales my my job usually entails
being outside the office for long
hours. i want to improve the
complexion of my skin and get back
to my former colour. What can i use
to do so? - Aarti Bajaj, 30
Dear Aarti,
As you have mentioned that you are
working mostly outdoors, using a
good sunscreen daily should be your
primary target. It should be reapplied daily every 4-5 hours. You
may start a lightening agent also in
the night time to reduce the tanning.
You can visit a skin clinic for
addional treatment like a photorejuvenation or chemical peel later.
I want to increase the length of my
nails. However, they are extremely
brittle and keep breaking once they
reach a particular length. What can
I do to grown them stronger?
- Janvi Mehta, 18
Dear Janvi,
Taking Biotin supplements might
help to have longer and healthier
nails. Reduce manicure activities to
prevent damage to your nails &
avoid acetone based nail polish
removers if possible.
If you have brittle nails, it could be a
health issue, such as anemia, or a
thyroid condition. In addition, eating
disorder may give chronic
brittleness due to severe protein
deficiency. If you don’t have any of
these health issues but have had
weak nails for as long as you can
remember, it could be genetic.
I need to do a laser hair removal on
my face. How safe is this procedure
and approximately how much would
it cost me. My side locks are my main
concern. Any other way I can get rid
of them permanantly except for
waxing...since my skin is extremely
sensitive. - Jigisha Shah, 35
Dear Jigisha,
Laser Hair Reduction is the most
safest and fastest way of hair
reduction on any part of the body
including the facial areas. 4 Sessions
of LHR for side locks might cost you
8-10 thousand rupees only. If you
have a sensitive skin then anyway
the best modality for hair reduction
for you is Laser only.
Hair is the indicator of health. All vitamins, proteins and trace element
deficiencies can be diagnosed by the structure, growth and appearance of the
hair. Styling, grooming, the manner in which the hair is cut and worn creates an
impression about your personality.
However, Dr. R. Rajput explains that one of the commonest problems that one
faces with hair is dandruff. There are various reasons for it:
• Poor blood supply. • Inadequate nerve stimulation. • Improper diet habits.
• Careless grooming or no grooming of hair. • Strong shampoos and chemicals
that dry the hair, reducing the oil production. • Dandruff spreads if it is not
treated.
There are two types of dandruff:
• Dry dandruff: Dry flakes that stick to the clothes and look embarrassing.
This dandruff disappears after a good hair wash but recurs after a few days. A
good anti – dandruff shampoo can take care of this.
• Oily dandruff: Scalp is excessively oily, itchy with large flakes being she
only during scratching or combing. These appear to stick to the scalp and peel off
as patches. This could be infectious. Proper clinical treatment is required to
control oily dandruff.
Scalp applications of selenium sulphide. Salicylic acid, resorcinol and
precipitated sulphur can tackle oily dandruff. The application should be let on the
scalp for a day before washing. Heat in the form of steam or infra – read rays can
improve the absorption of the scalp lotion. The frequency of treatment depend
on the severity of the condition. Clean combs and brushes must be used. Salon
treatment would be mainly massage to stimulate the blood circulation in the
scalp.
Dandruff relief: Mix two tablespoons of cosmetic vinegar with six
tablespoons of hot water. Apply onto the entire scalp. Cover the head with a
clean scarf and leave it overnight. Shampoo and rinse well in the morning. For
the last rinse, use three tablespoons of vinegar in one cup of hot water and wash
Factors that predict
weight gain
MM Correspondent
Fitness professionals expend a lot of
energy helping people to lose weight, but
there's another way to view this challenge:
What are the main factors that cause
people to gain weight?
Eating High-Calorie Foods: A study
found that eating behaviours associated
with progressive weight gain over
multiple 4-year periods included regular
consumption of
• Potato chips and potatoes (french
fries; mashed, baked and boiled potatoes);
• Red meat, processed meats (bacon, salami, sausage and luncheon meats)
and unprocessed red meats (beef, hamburger, pork, lamb or game);
• Butter, sweets and desserts; and
• Refined grains (foods like white flour and white rice).
Foods that help with weight management: Studies also found that eating
foods such as nuts, whole grains, fruits, vegetables, yogurt, diet (zero-calorie)
soda, cheese and milk (low-fat, skim and whole) appeared to curb weight gain.
Studies explain that these foods have slower digestion rates (some being high
in fibber) and appear to enhance satiety—the feeling of being full after a meal.
These foods can replace other, more highly processed foods in the diet,
creating a reasonable biological mechanism whereby people who eat more
fruits, nuts, vegetables and whole grains may gain less weight over time.
Consuming Sugar-Sweetened Beverages: Sugar-sweetened beverages
(SSBs) have little nutritional benefit and are reportedly the greatest provider of
kilocalories. In 2006, a study concluded that these drinks accounted for
approximately 8%–9% of total energy intake in children and adults. SSBs
contain carbohydrates of various forms, such as high-fructose corn syrup,
sucrose and artificial sweeteners. Drinking SSBs has little impact on satisfying
hunger, so people can consume large quantities without suppressing their
appetite. The body's response to carbohydrate (of equal caloric value) differs
depending on whether it is liquid or solid.
Sleeping Too Little (or Too Much): Although more clinical trials are
needed, several epidemiological studies suggest that weight gain is influenced
by sleeping less than 7 hours or more than 8 hours per night. According to a
study, people who sleep too little develop chronically impaired glucose
metabolism, steadily contributing to obesity. In addition, sleep deprivation
significantly lowers circulating levels of the hormone leptin and increases
circulating levels of the hormone ghrelin—both effects that promote food
intake. Altering the regulation of these hormones contributes to increased
hunger and appetite, especially for carbohydrate-rich foods linked to weight
gain. Ideally, sleeping 7–8 hours each night complements a successful weight
management program.
Watching a Lot of TV: Length of time spent watching television is highly
correlated with weight gain, especially in young people. According to authors,
epidemiologic studies reveal that those who regularly watch more daily
television per day tend to
• Snack more while watching;
• Have higher overall caloric intake of foods; and
• Consume more energy-dense foods.
All these choices lead to weight gain.
the scalp. This can be done twice a week for three months. Alternatively,
massage warm oil into the scalp and allow it to remain for one hour. Then rub
the juice of one lime with double the amount of vinegar and leave for another
hour. Shampoo and rinse thoroughly.
For dry dandruff: squeeze half a lime in five tablespoons of yogurt, add two
drops of cedar wood oil, mix this into two tablespoon full of green gram flour.
Apply for 10 minutes and wash with a mild shampoo. Repeat once a week.
For oily dandruff: Soak overnight two spoons of fenugreek seeds. Make a
paste in the morning, add two drops of lemon oil and apply to the head. Leave
the pack for half an hour and wash with herbal shampoo. Repeat once a week.
Henna for oily hair: Mix heena with two tablespoons of yogurt and a pinch
of sugar to form a light paste. Apply on the scalp, leave for 20 minutes and rinse.
Heena for dry hair: Mix heena with one tablespoon of oil and warm milk to
form a light paste. Apply on the scalp, leave for 20 minutes and rinse. Gives shine
and body to the hair.
Curds and lime as conditioner: Once a week application of curd to the
scalp for 20 minutes or rubbing a cut lime on the scalp once a week can help to
get rid of fungal infection and improve hair growth. Alkaline ph as found in soap,
is unfavourable for hair. Lactic acid in curd and ascorbic acid in lime provide acidic
ph that promotes hair growth.

My name is Mrs Sushma Rai.I wanted to ask is sprouts good for health? Are
they better than having dals? Please tell me.
Hello Sushma, Dals and sprouts have a same nutrient value. They both are
considered to be good protein sources. Germination increases the digestibility and
availability of nutrients. Vitamin C is synthesized during germination.Riboflavin,
niacin and folic acid content are increased during germination. During sprouting
phytic acid is reduced thus minerals like calcium, zinc and iron are released from
bound form and is easily absorbed. And last and not the least germination improves
taste and texture of the pulses and it can be eaten without much cooking (therefore no
oil/fat will be used). They are low in calories and high in fibre thus gives a feeling of
fullness. Sprouts can be an ideal breakfast for the people looking out for weight loss.
Hi, taking alcohol or tea, coffee in place of water is an easier way to keep
oneself hydrated. Is it OK if I have 5-8 cups of tea everyday? - Unknown
Hello, Drinking beer or alcoholic beverages is not the right way to rehydrate
yourself. Alcoholic beverages contain little carbohydrates and the alcohol can actually
work against you by causing your body lose fluid and get dehydrated more quickly.
Caffeine based beverages like tea, coffee or colas are a diuretic, they cause you to lose
water by increasing your urine output. So, if you use caffeinated drinks, increase your
water intake as well.
For example: If you drink four cups of coffee, you may need more than eight cups
of water per day to make up for what the caffeine causes you to lose. Therefore when
you are having these kinds of beverages be sure to stay well-hydrated.
My friend followed a diet given by a dietician and lost 10kgs. I am also overweight
by 10kgs and of same age. I followed the same diet but didn't get the same results
.Can you please comment on this and tell me why? - Ritesh Jain
Hi Ritesh, There is no single, common or uniform diet for everybody. Medicines
are illness-specific; similarly a diet is very individualized and illness specific if there
are any. It varies from person to person. The number of calories you need to obtain
from your diet depends on how much energy your body uses. This partly depends on
how efficiently your body cells use energy which is genetically determined and partly
on your level of physical activity. Each and everybody's body type is different
therefore their diet will also differ. Therefore I would advice you to consult a
professional dietician or a doctor before going on any kind of diet. This will help you to
prevent any kind of medical ailments and also achieve your goals.

PISCES (Feb 19 – Mar
20): At the beginning of
this week, the Moon will
be placed in your sign. Pisces can
be described as sensitive, spiritual,
scrupulous, stubborn, and often
sympathetic yet shrewd. The ruler
of your sign, Jupiter, will be in Leo
and placed in the 6th House from
your sign, mainly related to
ailments, diseases and adversity.
Be careful about your health.
ARIES (March 21 to April
20): This week, you are
likely to incur expenses on
account of urgent requirements in
your household. Matters related to
personal life are likely to weigh
heavily on your mind. Some
monetary gains may accrue
around Thursday which is likely to
cheer you up. Freshers seeking job
opportunity are likely to feel happy
as they may get a job of their
choice around this time.
TAURUS (Apr 20 – May
20): After a long stint in its
own sign Gemini, Mercury
will shifts into the watery cardinal
sign Cancer this week. Mercury will
now be placed in the 3rd House
from your sign to join Sun and
combusted Mars already placed
therein. Business and salespersons
looking to venture into a new
territory may be able to plan their
tours intelligently.
GEMINI (May 21 – Jun
20): With Mercury, the
ruler of your sign, placed
in own sign, your basic traits are
likely to come to the fore. And the
good thing is that Gemini, an air
sign, will present you as versatile
and adaptable. Communication
will be the buzzword for you this
week. You may find it difficult to
stick to just one thing at a time.
CANCER (Jun 21 – Jul
22): Your sign is known to
be a complex one, both at
its best and its worst. Cancer is
supposed to be one of the most
intriguing signs of the zodiac. With
the Moon as ruler of your sign, you
tend to be moody, temperamental,
sensitive and emotional. But
however, this week, you are likely
to feel energetic and raring to go.
LEO (Jul 23 – Aug 22):
With debilitated and
combusted Mars in
conjunction with the Sun in a
watery sign, you are likely to get
very emotional now. You may even
intensely feel the pain and stress
experienced by another person.
And this is not surprising since
being compassionate is a virtue
associated with you. You are likely
to focus more on occupationrelated matters.
VIRGO (Aug 23 – Sep
22): Business persons and
professionals are likely to
have gainful time here. However,
remain careful in financial
transactions. With Venus posited in
the 12th House from your sign,
you are likely to be in a hurry to
earn money. Ganesha cautions
against indulging in speculative
activities. Get a clear idea of your
wealth and money stars in
advance, and plan accordingly.
LIBRA (Sep 23 – Oct 22):
With Venus posited in the
11th House, distractions
are likely to hold you back from
remaining focused on relevant
issue. You may be lured to indulge
in pleasure seeking activities which
will entail a lot of expenditure.
However, with the Sun and
debilitated Mars posited in the
10th House from your sign,
pressing matters related to career
are likely to keep you preoccupied.
SCORPIO (Oct 23 – Nov
21): Scorpio is a watery
and fix-natured sign
which is why you are known to
have an indomitable spirit to fight
back and rise. However, Saturn
placed in your sign is likely to have
a subduing effect on your spirits. It
will make you realise the ground
realities and your limitations. Get a
clear idea of your wealth and
money stars in advance.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22
– Dec 21): At home, you
may be criticised for not
paying due to the requirements of
family members. It is not that you
do not make enough provision, but
some minor slip or oversight is
likely to be highlighted to your
discomfort. Kids may complain
about you not spending enough
time with them. Time to start
planning for your investments.
CAPRICORN (Dec 22 –
Jan 19): The Sun, in
conjunction with
debilitated and combusted Mars,
will be placed in the 7th House
from your sign, having direct
aspect over your sign. This
conjunction could make you
temperamental. It may annoy
people around you. You may
sound arrogant and egoistic and
the worst-affected by your attitude
will be your spouse.
AQUARIUS (Jan 20 –
Feb 18) : The ruler of your
Sign, Saturn, will be
retrograde now and placed in the
10th House from your Sign. It will
aspect the 4th House from your
Sign, related to domestic matters,
and the 7th House, which is related
to partnership, spouse and day-today activities. you are in for some
real hard work, irrespective of
what occupation you're engaged
in.

A tribute to loveable Kaido-Heer's Uncle
He was always considered a fearsome
villain. Most of the time Smoking, drinking,
gambling, scheming, conspiring and
killing on celluloid screens for decades. All
vices considered a taboo in our
conservative society. And he looked so real
in all the negative roles defying the basic
logic that he was only acting out his roles.
Some looked at him in awe and others
were simply scared of him.
Baljeet Parmar
I too carried this mixed feeling when I
first met the maestro in 1969. He was
shooting for Heer Ranjha at a village near Chandigarh. Late Dr
Vishwanath Tiwari had taken a group of favourite students to the
sets. Tiwari was a good friend of Chetan Anand, film's director.
When we were exchanging a few words with Chetansaab, in
came Pransaab fully adoring his costume with a lathi in his hands.
“Aa gaya Mama Heer da mundiyo. Tusi ehde nall gappan maro te
main kujh kum kar lavan,” Chetansaab said and left. We all were
stunned by Pransaab's sheer presence among us. Dr Tiwari broke
the ice and initiated dialogue with Pran. They started discussing the
tale of Mirza –Sahiban, a subject close to Tiwari's heart. “If I ever
make a film on Mirza Sahiban I will take you as the hero” Pransaab
told Tiwari. By that time Chetansaab too returned and heard the
offer. “Nobody except me will ever touch the Mirza Sahiban tale, I
will make the film and Tiwari will not be the hero,” Chetansaab said
and laughed. “Look who is playing Mama Heer da for you,”
Pransaab told Tiwari taking a dig at Chetansaab too at the same
time.
This quick with eased the atmosphere. The thought of a
fearsome villain evaporated in seconds a Pransaab stood out as a
thorough intelligent gentleman.
Looking back I recollect that Pransaab did produce a Hindi film
in 1982 but it was not Mirza Sahiban. It was Laxman Rekha,
directed by his son Sunil and did good business.
Chetansaab too collected more than 50 kissas of Mirza Sahiban
from Punjab and Pakistan an even wrote a script but the project did
not see light of the day till his death. With all the protagonists of the
project, Tiwari, Chetan Anand and Pransaab gone, the legendary
love tale will remain a tale.
The most defining feature of Pransaab's personality was his
insistence on discipline, punctuality, mannerism and courtesy. This
trait of his I witness exactly a decade later in 1979 when I was
working for Chetansaab's Himalaya Films.
Very few in the filmdom knew that versatile but reclusive actor
Raaj Kumar always celebrated his birthday at Chetansaab's seafacing shack in Juhu. The party was open to only close family
member and friends. On that particular day, Pransaab was passing
through the locality and decided to call on Chetansaab. When he
reached the gate he found the party going on. The watchman
informed that it was Raajsaab's birthday party.
However, Chetansaab's son Kunki (Ketan Anand) spotted
Pransaab and headed towards the gate. But by that time Pransaab
had gone back to his car. Kunki made run after the car and I
managed to stop the same and invited Pransaab in.
He said that he was sorry to drop in and he should have called
up Chetansaab before coming. By that time Kunki also arrived and
took Pransaab in. But true to himself, he spent not more than ten
minutes. He even refused to have a peg of his favourite Black label
and left after having a cold drink. But he did not forget to return the
favour. After an hour or so, Raajsaab received a beautiful bouquet
sent by Pransaab. The gesture had tears in the eyes of Chetansaab.
And that was the beginning of my long association with
Pransaab. Kunki started a film named Registan (The Desert) and I
was one of his assistants in the direction department. The story
revolved around two Rajput sardars fighting each other. One was
Pransaab and the other was National School of Drama veteran
Manohar Singh. It was both fun and learning experience for me as I
spent long hours of interacting with Pransaab.
The other most important aspect of Pransaab's life, was his
penchant for Punjabi culture, literature and arts. And I came to
learn about it when Pransaab told Kunki that he will not be available
for shooting between April 8 and 14. We all were surprised that why
an ever fit and workaholic Pran would ask for such a break. The
surprise was over when after the day's pack up when Pransaab told
us that he wanted to prepare for the annual Baisakhi celebrations
organized by the Panjab Association, Mumbai. I offered my services
and Pransaab accepted. He asked me to reach Punjab Association
Hall near King's Circle railway station on April 8 by 11am.
There it was, altogether a different scenario, a different
atmosphere and a different Pransaab. He along with his friend
Jairajji, Association members like RP Anand and others was
preparing a list of items to be performed on state. There were
several artists, singers, comedians and folk dancers. That was the
first day of selection of artists and their items.
Pransaab listened to all the songs, duets, skits, mimicry items
and witnessed dance moves. He was very particular that no item or
gesture should hurt communal, religious of personal feelings of the
audience. He believed in 'neat and clean' items, no double meaning
words or gestures, no cheapness or rustic elements. He always told
the artists to follow the rich traditions of Punjabi culture.
Almost every known artist from Punjab will vouch for his
commitment and concern for Punjabiat. Be it Hans Raj Hans,
Wadali Brother, Gurdas Maan, Pammibai, Jaspinder Narula and
others. They all have fond memories of the man.
He will select the items watch rehearsals and provided vital
Music director Khyamsaab, Baljeet Parmar, Harjit Walia,
Suresh Oberoi and Jarnail Singh at Pran Saab’s residence a
few months before his sad demise
inputs. After four days of rehearsal at the Association hall the scene
would shift to the actual auditorium where the main function was to
be held. Two days of full rehersalss with sets, music and lights. And
Pransaab supervised everything. On the day of the show he will sit
in the wings, unseen by the audience with the list of items in his
hands. He with remind the next performer to be ready before the
previous item got over. He would never on stage even during
presentations. That was his commitment. He continued to sit in the
wings till 2008 when his health started showing signs of age.
His memory started fading but he always put pressure on his
failing nerves to remember the near and dear ones and their
names. I last met Pransaab on April 8,2012. What a coincident. My
news channel owners had decided to honour Pransaab and they
wanted an acceptance letter from him. At first Pransaab did not
recognized me although we were talking on the awards issue. I
asked Pransaab that was he still in touch with RP Anand and
Kulwant Singh Kohli of the Punjab Association. Pransaab just
looked at the wall and did not answer. By that time, the letter was
ready. I touched Pransaab's feet and begged his leave. Suddenly
the voice came,”Baljeet RP da ki haal hai” he asked. Both me and
his son Sunil felt delighted.
But we had another surprise in store. The door bell rang and
there was the always smiling Sardar Kulwant Singh Kohli coming in
with folded hands. There was a big smile on Pransaab's lips and a
glow on his face. Pransaab lifted his arms and hugged Kohli. He
always remembered and recognized the people he loved. That was
Pransaab.
