WTC Newsletter March 2015 - World Trade Center Portland
QUARTERLY NEWSLETTER VOLUME 16 / NO. 1 Want more birds in your backyard? Get inspired to attract more birds to your backyard The PGE Sustainability Committee is hosting a Greenbag Thursday, March 26 at noon in 2WTC Flags with Nikkie West, Portland Audubon’s Backyard Habitat Program Coordinator. The Backyard Habitat program educates, assists and officially certifies homeowners within the cities of Portland and Lake Oswego, to restore native wildlife habitat in their backyards. There are five program elements: removal of aggressive weeds, naturescaping with native plants, storm water management, pesticide reduction and wildlife stewardship. All homeowners, avid gardeners and nature enthusiasts are encouraged to attend. Rubicon goes Underground! Rubicon International is taking a ride on the London Tube this year. As part of its business plan roll-out, the educational consulting company transformed its office space into the London Underground, complete with maps and route signs so all employees know how to get from Piccadilly to Buckingham Palace. To set the stage at the January unveiling, Rubicon partners embraced character roles including Her Majesty the Queen Janet Burreson and Prime Minister Roger Smith. The lively décor brightens up Rubicon’s office space and revitalizes the staff with creative energy. The spirit of London greets employees each day, with the iconic “Mind the Gap” signs at the foot of each elevator. From dawn to dusk, the neon London Underground sign is quietly aglow in the elevator bay. As part of the British invasion, windows boast frosted decals of London’s landmarks and many of the framed artwork pieces around the office showcase Big Ben, the Queen’s Guard and Parliament, to name a few. If employees are unsure which line to take, they simply check the Tube platform signs throughout the office for easy navigation to Wimbledon Park and back. Whether they’re recording their next educational video in Abbey Road Studios or holding a firm-wide meeting in the Globe Theatre, Rubicon International has certainly caught Beatlemania! During the week, you will find him performing a variety of WTC functions as manager of the Corporate Services Group and WTC Sales and Catering. Fred is not intimidated by challenges outside his comfort zone. He has a knack of turning departments around by setting goals and objectives and then taking the initiative to make them happen. He has taken on and been successful in FERC critical information protection (CIP), engineering and telecommunications, service desk and planning, PMO and data center management. He likes to take on challenges in his personal time too. You might find Fred parachuting with his daughter, hiking or zip lining in Maui. Fred likes the variety of work in his current job, which he began Nov. 1, 2014. In the Corporate Services Group, he manages the WTC fleet vehicles, forms and envelopes, copiers and printers, vending, and conference room scheduling. In his WTC sales and catering management role, he supports a strong team that provides sales and banquet services for wedding, auditorium and conference room events. Fred was born and raised in North Dakota. After a tour in the Marines, Fred moved to Portland 30 years ago and worked in a variety of jobs — from welder to limo driver to home remodeler — as well as 25 years in IT. Fred spent the last 20 years in a leadership role, including the past eight years at PGE. He is happy to be living in Oregon, where he and his wife of 30 years and his two great daughters live. They enjoy the ocean, desert and “being an hour away from doing something different and exciting daily,” Fred says.
